There were a few friday sales today, but I could only make it to two.
The first was at a house of a guy I see at sales from time to time. His garage was full of boxes he hasn't looked into for years. He was selling to make room for more. His prices were a little high but I was able to talk him down a little (not much)

The second sale was an estate sale that I got to 20min late. I think I may have missed a few MAC wrenches, but I was able to scrounge 2 in the bottom of a cardboard box. There was a small Cman metal lathe (109.xxxxx) that sold for 50$ with tooling and extra gears, no motor.

Pretty excited about this mornings estate sale find. An almost complete (I searched everywhere for the one damn missing socket!) Vlchek ratchet/socket set. I understand Vlchek ratcheting tools are pretty rare, so I am hoping it works better after cleaning/lubing. Everything here cost me $20. More than I usually pay, but for a Vlchek ratchet set, Plomb and older SK set I'll take it.

I have to plead ignorance on the Plomb. What is it for? Some type of reamer?

Anyone have that missing Vlcheck socket?

No problem!

Following up on an old post of mine ( because we all like to know how things end around here, especially restorations), I finally got the Corvette ratchet rebuilt by the Snap On guy. Cost more than the ratchet but it was useless without a ball.

Look out Dual 80's this 20 tooth is back in business!

I wanted to share one of my best finds with you guys. I got this a an estate sale, the kind of sale with 80+ years of accumulation and you are digging through the mess. I was digging and uncovered this amongst a bunch of very greasy flathead ford and other parts. I didn't know what it was at first but then knew it was something good. I brought it up with all the other greasy parts and wound up paying $5 for the Chrysler Gazelle. It cleaned up very well as the grease and grime must have preserved it. I did sell it as I needed the cash for a project I am working on and wanted this to go to a good home.

Hit up a couple estate sales this morning. I got a couple aluminum pipe wrenches, metal shaping tools, an eagle oil can, and a nice rechargeable flashlight (only $2 because they lost the cord).

4 stops in the rain this morning. All local, thank goodness. The second one turned out to be next week. Doh ! I read the ad wrong. :tard: It made me late for the third stop, where the tools used to be before they sold before I could get there. I had to resort to scraping the back of the bench drawers to find two items.

Bahco Sweden and Irega Spain adjustables, Williams DOE's , Snap On distributor wrench and magnetic pick-up. $8

Frontier Bronze co. aluminum pipe wrenches, never heard of Frontier, Snap-On and Hazet wrenches $20

Xcelite metric nutdriver set, and Snap-On wrench roll. The wrench roll had Craftsman wood chisels in it but I wanted the wrench roll so the chisels will be going. $18

Well, folks, I got to try bargain hunting, southern fried style, this weekend as I'm in Montgomery, Alabama for the next two weeks. Emphasis on the "fried" as the highs today are headed for 99-degrees, with humidity making it feel like the high one hundreds.

With the whole day to kill, I tried just about every angle to find a bargain.

Craigslist: Tools is pretty thin here, with everyone asking top dollar for used stuff.

Craigslist: Garage Sales generated lots of sales with baby clothes and kitchen junk, but nothing with tools.

I prowled two separate Flea Markets, but one had nothing tool-related, and the other had some tools, but everything I found was right about at the E-bay going rate.

Home Depot customer terminal: at the end of the day, I ducked into a HD to try out their customer computer price checker, looking for Clearance and penny-sale specials (see the separate threads on GJ re: HD clearance items). I was able to get on the terminal, but found no bargains at that store.

Here's what did pay off:

The only estate sale this weekend in Montgomery (at least that advertised on estatesales.org) had a long list of household antiques and sundries and ended with "and a shed full of tools". Today was the second day. All items were half price, which was good, but everything was also pretty picked over. Here's what I grabbed:

BMC locking pliers (once again, recognized a desirable tool thanks to GJ http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=294670&highlight=scale - $1
Walsco 806W 6-ft tape measure - $0.50
Corsair 6" hacksaw - $0.50
Dolphin-brand pruning saw, made in Germany - $1.50
Coffee can of assorted ratchets and sockets - $1.50
These are obviously the unwanteds from the first day. Many of them are too rusty to ID. There's quite an assortment of brands: Wizard, Duro, Snap-on, P&C, Walden, Husky, Fleet, mostly 1/2" drive. The big 1/2" ratchet is the Fleet, but its gears are roasted. I got excited over the little Wizard 3/8 ratchet, but its internals have been welded together, so it's roasted too.

After paying up, I strolled through the house looking for more and found these items:

Updated for WWII "to suit the needs of the Navy at war" - cool!
Music to Strip By album (must be for wood refinishing [emoji106] ) - $0.25
South Pacific album - $0.25
I'm not a book or vinyl collector, so we'll see how these do on eBay.

I found a garage sale out in the country advertising "lots and lots of stuff, antiques, etc" a little ways so I took a chance and drive out. The lady running it said there were tools but they all sold yesterday (figures). I poked around a bit and came up with these for $1:

Vintage Crestline B-B-Q rotisserie drive motor
6" Kingshead "Betakut" Italian scissors
USA-made no-name flat-blade screwdriver

My final method of bargain hunting (that worked) was a thrift shop next to the flea market. They had some tools, all overpriced ($25 for a vintage 1/2" Craftsman speeder )
I saw this little Shopmaster table saw with a cool stand for $75, but don't have the space for it. It was sporting a 3/4-horse Craftsman motor, however.

I ended up paying $8 for this little Plano tool box, mostly to get the four Mercedes Benz tools inside. They are going for 2-3 times that online, so we'll see if the gamble pays off.

Next weekend's forecast is looking even worse, but I'll monitor the garage and estate sale list for anything worth going after. Meanwhile, maybe I should actually be studying and prepping for class next week...

A serious "Block sale" (> 20 streets) 9 other Garage sales, 2 estate sales and a Church Flea market; That's what my day was like. All in all I'm a happy camper with the results! even if some of them are unusual!

The massive Block Sale:

$5 for a model steam engine. I can remember a friend had one like this when I was in the 5th grade. I need to find some "fuel" for it and test it but everything is free/operational

Henry Diston & Sons 24" Backsaw for a buck

same place: Bells for SWMBO -$1

$2.50 for a nice wood Chinese Checkers board. This will go on a wall with other wood board games we have.

Same place for free, a brand new High quality US made US flag (stitched stars...) I asked "how much" and the answer was "I won't sell a Flag or a Bible, if you promise to keep it off the ground, It's yours!"

I shook that man's hand.

I don't find these very often, and I told my daughter that right after I bought it: A Plvmb Driver (big one!) for $4 and the Everhart stitching wheel for tire patches was $1.5. the wheel has ball bearings!

$4.5: A Craftsman drill Index stand, A SECOND Plvmb Driver! as well as a 5/16 Plvmb chisel, SM Hammer, SO driver, and a Warner Sanding Block

An Estate sale on :Get it gone! day, for $2: a Fram PH8A Filter, NOS Victor torch tip, Telegraph Key, Marbles pistol cleaning rod, and a NOS pkg of garage storage Hangers.

At the Estate sale I got two free books when the announced that "All books are free!: Eddie Rickenbacker's Autobiography, and a Welding Textbook. this guy had tones of engineering books and books on every aspect of flying.

After I got home I opened the Autobiography and noted something written inside. No big deal right? People often do that with a gift book: Only this is Eddie Rickenbacker's Inscription and dated Signature! I found ink on the inside of the cover from when it was closed, and I googled his signature and this appears to be the real deal! I actually gasped when I saw it was his signature initially.

And the last stop the Church sale from the same Guy: An SK 1/2" breaker with the 1/2" female drive to make it an extension for $2, and for another buck, 3 long C sockets and a craftsman box, for them (one hinge needs spot welded...)

My brother had that exact same engine. Brings back fond memories of when they still made toys that could kill a kid.

Only one sale for me today.

Craftsman block plane for 2 dollars.

The ratchets, extensions and reducer are all S-K except the 3/8 extension(Thorsen) 6 dollars for all.

I found some nice deals this week at different pawn shops and garage sales.
Some older Craftsman and Westward stuff, a nice MAC phillips screwdriver, and the biggest tease was the Ko-Ken socket set box. I found that buried under a huge pile of Mastercraft stuff at a pawn shop. Unfortunately it had no Ko-Ken sockets, it was filled with bits and pieces, mostly Grey, Proto, and Craftsman. Ah well, it will do nicely to hold the 1/2'' Grey 12 point set that I'm building.
Paid $40 for the whole pile, plus a couple of wrenches that went straight into my car tool box.

You scored big on that survivor light! If it is a regular light it's about $80 and I believe the led bulb goes for $100 W/o a charger base.

And please consider posting an update with pics if you bought a broken and/or rusty POS and you fixed it & cleaned it up.

Pretty lean day, lots of rain and most of the sales I wanted to hit didn't even set up. I did manage a few deals.

A half box of 8D ring shank nails for my Hitachi air nailer. These are going to hold on the sheeting in my new shop next spring.

A nice lil hand dolly- for panel work

Sargent pliers. "Bernards Parallel Action Pliers Sold to jewelers. Also used to be use (LONG time ago) in surgery to push pins in with that slot in the center. Pins and plaster technique. Then the pin would be shortened after the plaster set over it with the cutter on the side." This is what a friend told me about them.

Irwin expandable bit for a brace but the brace chuck was cut off.

Frey Co. Brass nesting precision screw driver set

Smith & Hemenway Giant No. 1 nail puller. These worked very well on square nail... not so much on the round ones. But too cool to let go to scrap. She'll hang out on the wall of the new shop

$30.00 bucks for every thing. The nails cost more than that.

Outlawmws - you knocked it out of the park today. That Everhart stitcher is the exact copy of the one I grew up using. My brother still has it in use at his home shop.

Awesome find on the Rickenbacker book.

Todays sales were a church bazaar and 1 yard sale. No tools, only thing I saw worthwhile was a $5 aluminum hi-temp popcorn popper. Already have it. Sad news.

Two old multimeters that work! Fluke on the right, hp on the left. 5$ a piece!! I got some Armstrong slim wrenches for a dollar, and 7 of the 7.62 nato ammo cans for 3$ a piece.
