Are those pliers for upholstery? Looks like they could be used for stretching fabric as well as hammering tacks in ...

Probably totally wrong, but that's my guess

Turns out they are shoe pincers Joe, don't know how old yours are but the picture below is from a 1923 catalogue (they were still in the 1964 catalogue but had disappeared by the 1971 catalogue).

Mike, cool saw!

Martin, great score on the press, love how you got it home!

Today I finally scored!! This band saw was listed on CL last year for $80 and about 35 minutes away. I tried negotiating for $50 and meet closer but he would not budge off the price or meet and certainly not both. The listing was removed after a couple weeks and I thought that was the end of it. This is the ONLY time I have seen this model saw around these parts and I was sad to miss out on it. Cruising CL today, the saw is relisted and even better, it's listed for $50!! We jumped in the van then went and got it, hour round trip and $50 smackers but it's finally MINE!! :willy_nil

It has a jack shaft too but I have the correct pole stand and plate for it so when I restore it, it'll be right! If anyone has the a knob that holds the pulley cover on, let me know, that is the only thing missing on it!

Picked up this sweet articulating lamp for $15. It's either going on my vise stand or above my workbench.

Neighbor's garage sale. Picked up the old welder for the Kohler motor. Also (not pictured) about 25 3/8 and 1/2 socket rails in varying lengths and a box of sand for blasting. Those were a curb rescue.

Cheap plastic tool box is full of mostly truck brands and some Craftsman and a few cherry pickings. Flea market dealer told me to load up the box for a price I couldn't refuse and he was right.

Well here's my manufacturer. .. you guys are the best!!!

Not 100% sure if this quote is about the same manufacturer but if it is then perhaps they are pre 1892 ....

'R TIMMINS & SONS were makers of heavy steel 'toys' - toy in this context means any small metal object, including hand tools. The company, founded in 1790 by Richard Timmins, was situated in Hurst St, and later in Pershore Street, Birmingham. In 1889 they were taken over by another Birmingham maker, W & C Wynn of Suffolk Street (also listed as edge tool makers) and who moved to Commercial Street in 1872. For a few years both companies continued to operate under their original names. In 1892 they were incorporated as Wynn, Timmins & Co, and in 1897 the premises in Commercial St were renamed Century Works. The company survived until 1969, when they were taken over by Balfour Dawins Ltd of Sheffield, and the works in Birmingham closed*.'

I usually don't hit garage sales but this one said 90% tools and down the road so figured id stop. TONS of good stuff, S&K, Snap-on, name brand USA stuff. Guy was absolutely absurd on his prices though. But then he walked away and his wife came up to me and says.. "I don't know why he priced this stuff so high, you come to me if you want a price, just don't let him see"
So there was this compression tester set marked $40, I point at it to her, she says $10. So I got moving quick. Yada yada here's what I got.

-Century Tool compression tester kit (new?)
-snap on and matco screw drivers
-working shop light on a reel
-2 plomb wrenches
-S&K socket kit with some randoms
-all sockets in picture are S&K besides the 4 on top, they are snap-on
-7 gallon air tank
- also a set of snap-on needle nose not pictured (already in my box)

Got it all for $46. Could of got more but the husband started being in the way

That's an interesting compression tester. I think what you have is meant for doing a compression check on all cylinders simultaneously. There are 9 gauges, which would indicate that it was made for use on a 9 cylinder radial tank engine of WWII vintage. If the adapters are 18 mm, that would be very likely.

Picked up this 20 ton press this morning, had competition so I had to grab it and bring it home in the back of a car, but the old Caddy didn't even know it was there! Wasn't passing it up for $60
Good deal. I thought I scored picking up a 12 ton for $75.

Ratchet sickness

$10 for the three craftsman, and $3 for the sk. I do remember when I survived on 2 ratchets, that was before GJ. I think my count is towards 20 now.

Gotta love CL ads with horrible pictures - seriously! This picture is from an ad posted for a tool sale that actually started yesterday. I kind of threw a fit this morning when I saw the ad - thinking I had missed all the good stuff. I asked about his sales from yesterday and he stated that only a few people showed up he only sold $60 worth of tools. I will post pictures a little later, but for now enjoy the blurry picture featuring 3 tables worth of hand tools.

Brian

Following up on my post from Saturday, I finally hve some pix to show!

As I stated previously, I was upset I had missed this CL listing for a sale involving "vintage tools". When I arrived, I was pleased to see both full tables and reasonable prices pasted on things. The Craftsman box was the first thing I grabbed so I could start loading up! I paid $40 for everything shown here.

Pic 1: the tool box
Pic 2: the whole lot
- Misc chinese sockets that were in the tool box
- 2x Lectrolite DBE wrenches
- Mac 3/8" Breaker bar
- 2x SK 3/8" breaker bar
- SK 1/2" breaker bar
- Challenger 12" 3/8" extension
- cman 6" 3/8" extension
- SK 6" 1/2" extension
- Unknown T-bar tap wrench
- Bonney thin double open-end wrench
- Proto 7/16" combo wrench
- "Diamond Calk and horseshoe co." 12" adjustable wrench (first time finding one of these with this company title)
- "swiss" mini plier
- Unknown drafting compass (very heavy and excellent quality)
- round file
- cman 8" adjustable wrench
- Crescent 6" adjustable wrench
- Craftsman tubing cutter (older logo?)
- cman 1/2" ratchet
- unknown (american made) mini slip-joint plier
- Wiss 9x "Scroll pivoter" shears with loop for index finger - I'ver never seen anything like this before (see other picture)
- "Whitney Metal Tool co." sheet metal punch. There's only one set of dies but it works perfectly. I have an HF punch of the same design that I will dig out and see if the dies will work with this one ...
- Vise grip clamps
- cman 3/8" ratchet
- Pitsburgh 1/4" padded ratchet (I actually really like this one)
- SK 3/8" ratchet
- Crescent 10" adjustable wrench

I'm certain there was more I should have purchased, but I was in a terrible hurry. I may send him a message this week to see if he wants to sell the rest in one large lot as he seemed eager to sell.

Brian

Next stop on Saturday was to pick up a Rock Island 591 3" vise found on CL. $35 for this barely used beauty. As I spoke with the seller, he told me about an estate sale he had been to that morning and that they had a "large rusty vise" sitting on a bench with a $5 price tag on it. He menat to buy it, but got distracted and forgot. I asked him if he could direct me to the sale and he did better than that by handing me the written directions he wrote for himself that morning.

When I arrived, I immediately asked about the vise. It had sold (Damn!) but he encouraged me to go into the garage and load up as they were about to close and everything was cheap. I loaded up a tray and paid $15 for all.

This lot included

- "Equipto" metal drawer organizer
- table saw kick-back guards
- misc cabinet knobs
- Lennox hack saw (the same one made for Snap-on, et al
- cast iron grinder wheel cleaner
- cman router bit (new in plastic box)
- cast adjusting wheel for unknown power tool application
- Cincinnati mini clamps
- mini claw-foot stand-offs
- SK socket
- Williams multi-head hammer
- Dewalt sawzall blade
- Simonds file
- unknown open end wrench
- 3x DBE wrenches
- cman punch
- unusual open-end wrench w/ screw driver tip (Anyone know what this is?)
- Gasket punch
- lineman's plier
- wire cutter
- needle nose plier
- Simonds file
- 3x hole saws
- Excelite shorty screwdriver
- Martin 1 1/8 open-end wrench
- "Billings & (unreadable) co" s-shaped open end wrench
- "diamond tool and horseshoe co." 8" adjustable wrench. Just wanted to note the difference in name compared to the previous post featuring a "Diamond Calk horseshoe co." adjustable wrench.

I may have missed out on the vise, but still came out well.

Final item of the weekend was from a local junk shop that I stop by from time-to-time. $13 for everything.

- new milling bit
- Imperial tubing flare kit. This is hands down the best tubing flare tool I have encountered. the clamp has actual dies as opposed to being a cast unit and the screw has a tiny ball bearing at the end to keep from scoring the dies. I would have paid $13 for this setup alone!
- Craftman pipe wrench
- New Britain file
- Worth shears
- unknown linemans pliers
- Millers falls push drill
- Crescent 12" adjustable wrench
-

Riley - Nice scores.

The "Billings and something" would be "Billings and Spencer". They competed with Williams on industrial tools, eventually dropping the Spencer name and just becoming Billings.

The "table saw kick-back guards", aren't. They are called "featherboards" and are used to push and keep a piece of wood up against the fence as you push it through the blade. They can be used on tablesaws, bandsaws, shapers, etc. Where ever you need to feed a board without it wandering off it's mark. Very useful, but not really a safety devise.

Here's a close-up of the Billings & Spencer wrench. Additionally, I have a picture of the oddball open-end wrench/screwdriver. Anyone have an idea what it is?

The wrench/screwdriver whatsit looks like it might have been a DIY alteration for a specific machine/purpose.

Great find on the Bluepoint sander. I'd offer a you ****, but I can't. GJ rule #1 disallows self suckage. But I can give you a -

Almost. Almost had it :headshake It's in the rules somewhere. Possibly rule number sixty-nine or something like that :see:.

The wrench with the screwdriver is interesting though I'm not sure what it's for. A lot of tiny open ends with a screwdriver are firearm related but that looks bigger, perhaps industrial. Any name on that wrench? Maybe start a thread on that one for a wider audience.

Riley, that was a GREAT weekend haul! Lots of interesting pieces too! I really like the Snips and the Mac 3/8 Breaker- does it have an inlet in the end of the handle for use as an extension?

Outlaw, you were RIGHT! My mystery Niagara equipment is a bar folder.

Here is a link to a nice Youtube video showing someone using one just about like it.

Looks like my $20 investment wasn't too bad. Now I've got to get busy and get it cleaned up and operational again.

Flea market didn't quite scratch the itch so I decided to stop at a 2nd hand shop in town. Saw the tool boxes and worked out a package deal on them. He showed me the saw and offered to give it to me for $25 I couldn't say no, it looks like **** but it works. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1445295198.910724.jpg

Mitutoyo 527-313-50 dial depth gage, 12". Similar to dial calipers with the rack and pinion. Also has fine adjust. Been looking for one of these for a while now, they aren't very easy to find. Usually $100 or more used. $273 new on Amazon.

I got it for $40 off craigslist :D
