The saw wasn't a two person or poulan, I read the name on it but can't remember as it wasn't a common brand I'm familiar with. The aluminum body was bare finished and about a foot or more wide, maybe 15" tall and at least that long. I think it was about 2'0-24" of chain rail with big teeth to prevent kickback. Name/model plate riveted on left side of body. I was thinking it would be cool all polished up bright.
The guy helping set things up mentioned that Saturday they would be blowing things out an to check back then as that was the last day of the sale.
The pricing mostly ended in change, like $1.25 or 1.50 for something worth $1.29 in a store...
The metal I got was $38.76 the guy said because he charged 30% less than the cost of what the price he looks up on the Internet. So the piece I wanted was. 12' and a few inches, break out the calculator and the total came to. $38.76, no penny discount on the first day, didn't even round down to 12' and it's just an inch or so over. There was lots more metal, some cool I beams etc but I almost crapped my britches when he quoted me the prices. The only reason I popped on that piece was I've been looking for 4" heavy wall box to put under that 2" plate for a while and figured since there was 12', I could get all four legs from the same piece and under $40 I would just bite the bullet and get it over with.
I'll drop back by tomorrow if I get a chance and snap a pic of the saw. Also since #1 scrap iron is about $0.06 lb, I figured I would offer $0.10 lb for any of the big pieces they don't sell by Saturday at close.

The grinder originally had a 1.5 HP 3 phase Dayton motor. I don't have 3 phase power and didn't want to rig my belt grinder's VFD up to multiple machines, so I replaced it with a $25 scratch and dent 2 HP 1 phase WEG motor. It'll strip the rust off of anything in no time flat and generally scares me to death]

What speed and diameter wheels are yoy running on that? You are right, once someone uses a 2+ HP wire wheel the fractional HP bench grinders seem delicate, underpowered and safer.

Wowzers. I've seen bean counters a these sort of things but all seem to give within a quarter or dollar. I really appreciate the feedback! If I get time I may scout it tomorrow at lunch for a toward closing time visit on Saturday. I love big chainsaws and will take a look but after thinning out my collection I tend to stick to the Poulan S25 and 245 based saws unless it's a really good deal or something too cool to pass up.

That 2" plate you have is both absurd and awesome. I'd probably have also grabbed it in your situation but I definitely wouldn't have known what the heck to do with it. Let me know when you want to grab that 1/2" plate. After beasting a generator into the back of the truck I sold on CL earlier this week, I fancied trying to do the same with it...

BxMVrpDIYAAf1cf.jpg

...with no luck. It's probably ~175lbs but awkward at that size.

The WEG is 1750 RPM and the wheel is currently ~10" in diameter. I imagine it was larger when new and there is roughly 12" total clearance with the guard. When it's time to replace them, if I went with anything 12" in diameter I may need to adjust the guards as it would be very tight.

It's definitely not underpowered for my needs but as previously mentioned, is one of the tools I have a greater respect for. It still comes in second to my buffer; I don't think any of my PPE will save me from a knife being thrown across the room with extreme velocity.

After a quick google session, this was the closest image I could find to match my memory(which isn't that good anyway). Possibly a Lombard?

Made my bi-weekly stop to my local Union Gospel Mission thrift store on the way home from work yesterday hoping not to get skunked like I did earlier this week - and I wasn't disappointed!

I nearly tripped over the vintage Craftsman 2-drawer toolbox while trying to get to something else. I would have paid much more than the $8.95 asking price so I opted to pick up a few other things for more than I would have normally paid in order to assuage my guilt over the price of the toolbox.

Everything came to $27

20" Stanley "Yankee" ratcheting screwdriver
18" cold chisel (no markings)
Stanley awl
SK 1/2" drive socket
Craftsman screwdriver
Tru-test open-end wrench
Lufkin 50' and 100' measuring tapes.

Riley: great score on the CM box. And great use of "assuage", especially tough on a tools forum.

Is it 1:1 drive then?

Picked this up from CL after work. Craftsman 103.0803 belt/disc sander and a craftsman router/router table. Both mounted on a craftsman stand. It's missing the table for the disc sander. Anyone have a lead on one for sale? I couldn't pass it up for $25

Good luck, especially on a solid surface CI table. I got lucky and found an extra table for mine for $3. If you don't care about matching there are a number of past and I think even current production machines by cman, dayton, grizzly, enco? that will fit as they too use the .625"? (going from memory) mount rod.

Yeah I don't really need one right now but I'm sure there are rare to find. It would help to get a nice 90 degree edge when sanding 4link or frame brackets.

So I stopped at a few sales wit nothing. Then I decided to go look for a sale which didn't really have an address and I got lost. Luckily, I saw a sign for an unadvertised sale and found some decent stuff.
2 cord reels, a morse taper 1 chuck which I've been looking for, a dead blow hammer, and a Columbian 203-1/2 vise. All for $26

I would highly advise against you using that unit for metal. It will kill it in short order.

Merc hit me up this morning and let me know the high priced estate sale was half off today so I dropped back by for some conduit clamps and to make an offer on some more steel. I picked up a few handfuls of clamps for $3 not shown and got the =Craftsman= basin wrench, Craftsman chain wrench and unmarked ac clutch tool for $6.

What if I put a dc motor conversion on it and slow it down a lot?

Grinders actually need to run faster than wood sanders. Speed aside, that machine just would get destroyed from meal use getting abrasive grit in the workings. It's a good smaller piece wood sander though.

Just stopped by a quickie estate sale this morning, and they had this super heavy, probably about 600 Lbs steel workbench along with a craftsman vise, and craftsman grinder for $5!!

attachment.php

I passed on the bench due to lack of space in my shop, and manpower needed to offload it, but did pay the $5 for the two items mounted on top. All in all, I would say I did good.

But man, that bench was cheap!!!

That looks like an amazing bench if it was easier to move, I'm surprised the seller separated them! Good score!

I went to a garage sale in Oakville this morning and grabbed a few items, a set of ramps, hole saws, etc. In the midst of rust and dust I spotted this..... I would have gladly paid $30 for the scribe alone.... surprised the seller didn't ask more for the box based on my complete lack of a poker face!

The Stanley Scribe is hands down one of my favourite tools, and this is only the second one I've seen for sale in 12 years! Pretty happy.

Auction number 2 this week was the monthly online industrial auction I usually buy from. And as usual, I found a few goodies that called out to me.

This B n A Caliper $5 and while not an expensive brand will serve well in the garage for quick reference use.
IMG_2321.jpg

This pic is a group of 3 lots $5 each lot. The small clamp-on halogen lamp needs a bulb but should be a handy size. The Larin clamp is not USA made but was brand new without a scratch. The assortment of needle nose and side cutters are used but I've already picked out a few for my tool box and the rest will get re-sold.
IMG_2314.jpg

Last was this very nice 55" long aluminum diamond plate tool box that matches perfectly to the trim and side box in my F150 now. It will make a good addition for carrying tools in the truck but safe and out of the elements.

Well, I did my weekly tour of the county this morning. 7 planned stops. I think I saw more HF tools on my tour than I see in the store. Most were still in the packages. I didn't see anything worth looking at until I got to my fourth stop.

Just when I was starting to loose hope, I made it to the fourth stop. It was an estate sale for a wood sculptor that had passed away. At first I though it was cancelled (no signs), until someone else realized that a side door was open. Some nice old machinery mixed in with newer stuff. The prices were high on the machines and exotic woods (Ebony heartwood 4" x 24" long) $200ea), but within reason given what was there. They were much more reasonable on the smalls. Some of the machines in the shop were an old 30" Boice/Crane scrollsaw ($300), a 3ph 30" bandsaw ($1200), and an old cast iron Dayton floor standing double drum sander ($300). We couldn't find a name on the cast iron wood lathe as I helped the buyer dismantle it to fit into his SUV. All I know is that all the machines were big and heavy. One of the things I found was a stand that I can use to get my Cman 103.xxxx bandsaw off the floor. Here's what I walked out with :

Pics 1-3 - $40
Foot Switch (need a new fuse to see if it works)
brass air manifold w/****** fittings for tubing
Channellock bottle opener
steel stand 20-1/4 D x 13-1/2 W x 29-1/2 H (perfect size and hight for my bandsaw)
adjustable ball/roller stand

Stop 5 was another misleading ad, but I did walk away with a street sign. (Pic 4 - $2)

Stop 6 was a bust (long drive for nothing).
Stop 7 was closing up when I finally got there, but there were a few tools still left.

Pic 5 - 50¢
3 - drive punches (India)
3 - nail sets
small roll of black wire.

Third time to the high price sale today, I picked up a set of floor mats to go on ebay(not shown) and this Greenlee rigid conduit bender. They were stuck on 50% off and even charged me for the piece of pipe I had to dig out of a pile to fit for the handle, spent $19 on the bender and handle. They would not come down on the scrap metal so I left it to rot.

Went to my favorite little junk store and got some.good stuff today. Craftsman "v" series 1/4 rhft ratchet, t handle, extensions, and a few sockets. 1/4" indestro breaker and sockets, Utica duckbills, another needlenose set, a hold-e-zee screwdriver, and some weird clamp thing. We couldn't figure out what it was for but guessing piping or conduit clamp for something. $7 for everything

Lots of great scores guys!:thumbup::thumbup:

I did reasonable today. 5 planned stops I think I scored stuff at 4?

First stop, an Aluminum tray for $5; I have one of these, exactly the same it turns out (Wearever), And since I'm still in "camping mode" decided this might make a decent table top for camping.

attachment.php

Little did I know how easy it would be. the legs are an aluminum Stove stand and it's almost like it was made for it! :bounce:

attachment.php

I think I'm now on the market for a second alum camp stove stand for the other tray and this will get some use at home and in the shop as well as camping! :see:

Second stop was a TOO, and I got this Bamboo Fishing/Fly pole and Fly reel for $8! the pole will slot into the handle from either end, so it can be a regular or fly pole, Albeit only 5-1/2 ft...

attachment.php

The makers mark is 2/3 gone, but who had a yellow oval with red lettering, beginning in "C" and ending in "ne" (possibly "Line"?) with "English Royal Lions" on either side in black? There is a Stylized handwriting script "L" with two lines (an "=" only with the ~ bend..) crossing it?

attachment.php

other than that damaged label, it's in nice shape!

A third (Planned) stop got these for a buck(the guy offered the whole box and contents for $10, but, mostly junk...)

A Slim Jim, a watchmakers puller tool, Krauter dykes, a mic barrel, 3 drive pieces, and one part from a "Gam" nested driver set.

Another planned stop and three Thorsen and one Proto Combos plus a Plvmb 3/8 breaker (WF) with the socket in the end of the handle. (This may be my first of those in 3/8?) I want one of these for my "road box..) $10 all...

Continuing:

a planned yard sale had a baggie of screw-in wall anchors, (I really like this type), a 1/4 hex drive, to 3/8 adapter, two brass thumb wheel nuts, and a 5/8 hole punch (I think this is my smallest...). Free with a $5 tub of coral my daughter wanted.

The next stop was crazy. an estate sale of a family that had been there for decades. SO MUCH STUFF! but I restrained myself...

What I got was, light chain ( the big pile is 12 ft long), a New Briton 7/8 deep, a tapered square punch that looks to have been hand forged at least on the beat end, a Cute little 3 oz claw hammer head, that I have to get a handle on if only for picture hanging  and that driver that has a weird pointed blade: It's Marked Hold-E-Zee TP 1. also Pat No. 2141072, which happens to be from 1938. Basically this is intended t be used with either slotted or the "new" Phillips head screws! :wtf:

Also a camp/fishing cushion,

And a Glass Block. (the huge Jingle Bell was from the Fishing pole stop..)

All the estate sale stuff was a total of $6!

Then we went back with SWMBO in tow, and I got an old NOS Holley 1bl carb, some LSS (Starrett) dividers with an 1885 Patent date, a really nice forged saw set with a Dec 14, 1880 Patent date, and a pair of Indestro Hose clamp Pliers. This was only part of the plunder from there for $7! (SWMBO and my daughter both had stuff, including a second glass block...)
