I'm thinking "machinist box" was not it's intended purpose. It's 21 wide, 14 tall and deep.
Drawer construction is basic box joint. Looks machine done, so not ancient. Cheaper woods.
Possibly a store piece. Like ship in and display to sell the goods?
Good thoughts Outlaw.

Cabinet for sewing thread - also very collectable.

My friend, Mike Paxton, claims that I always find the newest and best of tools. Well, I do find a lot like he described but once in a while I get taken. Below is what was described as an eggbeater collection, but turned out to be an assemblage of mostly junk.

With the junk properly stashed in a boneyard box, I'll show some other that i've obtained over the last few weeks.

Stanley 65 block plane in near mint condition, shown beside one that I consider to be in good condition.

Stanley 41Y Push Drill - NOS with another "in the box", but the older box is not near as nice.

Stanley corner brace, in excellent condition, beside an older one that's really not bad at all.

I managed to find a set of Marples chisels (no longer made) in the box - hardly used at all.

I had that set for a couple of days when another four-piece set popped up on C/L. Got them for $30.00 and the guy delivered them - that's a first for me n C/L.

Finally, I just can't pass up little boxes filled with goodies - $6.00.

Well done gentlemen.
Frog and Oldpine, what should I do with this thing? Can I gently clean?

Unload the contents and do minimum cleaning. Take lots of pictures to show what writing is still visible, and list it on eBay for $395.00 firm. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. List it as an Antique Spool Cabinet.

If you're unsure, do a search on eBay for Antique Spool Cabinet and check the completed listings.

I have found that Murphy's Oil Soap spray is effective and does no harm. In fact I use it on many things besides wood. It does not damage paint the way that Simple green can.

BF, some of those don't look half bad; what makes them "junk"? Do they not operate smoothly? Clean/lube and most, if not all of those will probably still work beautifully. Or is it that they are not NOS?

If you are keeping the cabinet, then this ^^^ is good advice. if you intend to flip it, the "keep the patina" crowd wants it as found...

Light brushing to remove dust and stop... Maybe a damp paper towel...

Well done gentlemen.

I'd do a test spot on the bottom first, but ........
An olde tyme recipe for cleaning solution on old woods is a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water (mind the fumes) and elbow grease. It will cut through all kinds of "patina" and get you down to the original finish if you are careful. Give a wipe with clean water to cut the vinegar residue afterwards. This is what your Great-Great Grandmother used to clean house with.

If you want to finish it pretty, then follow up with a light coat of Boiled Linseed Oil.

SNIP unusual "butterfly hinges" Anybody know what the hinges are for?.

I would venture a guess and say that the hinges are for an old garage or barn.

Are those arched parts of the hinge open? I'm guessing that they are to either go over a piece of molding if open, or line up with the same if closed...

I would agree; for a barn, carriage house, (garage to us moderns) or possibly a shed or garden gate.

I had to drive over to Texas today to deliver some truck parts so I decided to see what sales were going on. One sale LOL but it was a bar! So I stopped on the way and picked up some goodies. The taps are Louisiana breweries, Great Raft is only 20 miles from me in Shreveport and Abita is down south. Total for everything in both pics was $15.
After dropping off the truck parts (and making some good coin :) ) I decided to head to Jefferson TX to poke around the antique shops. Nothing much I wanted until I found this Craftsman 5176 vise with 3 1/2" jaws. It's heavy for this utility vise at 29 pounds. I have been wanting one of these art deco vises and it is in good shape so I paid $40 for it and was happy!

Is this my last finds of this year? We shall see!

Blue Frog:

I have to ask, but did any of those egg beaters have any bits inside the handles???

BTW, the rest of the "in the original box and in near pristine condition" was your Trade Mark for this year!!!

Congrats!!!

Tools were given and received in my family's house for Christmas. Seeing the above I forgot to post pics of this Goodell - Pratt #6 two speed breast drill. I gave it to my mom because she loves vintage looking stuff. At minimum of almost 85 years old I think it qualifies. In mostly good shape, has two patent #s, two speed selector is frozen.

I also got my dad this 10" Jamestown Crescent wrench, as he collects them. I thought it was interesting because it had the size in Inch and mm, which I don't think I've seen on a Jamestown before. Must have been late production.

Davethorik:

I like the idea of giving/receiving tools as a tradition for Christmas!!!

BTW, maybe some PB Blaster on the frozen two speed selector over a 24 hr period, might be all it needs to get it loosened up on that Goodell-Pratt.

Went to my best friends place today before he moves south (the bank just took back the house). It's a 90min drive and now he's moving to Fla. He's cleaning out his shop and wanted to see what I'd take before he goes to the dump. Most of his tools are cheap plastic chinese imports. He won't spend money on the good stuff because he knows that he's going to break it at some point anyway (we used to joke about him cutting plywood by flipping a table saw over and waving it back and forth over the wood real fast until the plywood separated down the line in fear for it's life.).

Anyway, I now have a pile of "stuff" in my truck that I'll have to unload and take pics of tomorrow when it isn't so dark.

However, while digging through the sawdust (he didn't clean the shop in 10yrs, but cut and lathed lots of wood), he hands me a flat 51" box and tells me to throw it in my truck. At first I thought it was a case for an old tap and die set, until I opened it up. NOPE !

It was a Mitutoyo vernier caliper, model #160-105. 40" in 1/1000ths ! I tried to give it back, but he wanted it gone so he wouldn't have to pack something he never uses.
This thing has a price tag of $1650.00 new. :scared:
The sold prices on ebay range from $270 - $500. :yikes:

He said that he got it for free and was just passing it on.

I'll post the other stuff (nothing that dramatic) as soon as I can get it out of my truck.

I'm sure going to miss him. :(

Very nice, Dave. When I was growing up, my Dad referred to all adjustable wrenches as "crescent wrenches", even though he didn't own one by the Crescent Wrench company. I was excited to find my first one in the wild.

My old man has been a diesel mechanic his whole life, given me a lot of tools, it's nice to give back.

I forgot my haul, mom has a pretty good eye for antiques like I mentioned. Here's what they got for me:

Miller's Falls #676-6in. flathead screwdriver, wood handle
Plvmb #9742 flathead screwdriver, 14", wood handle
Stanley flathead screwdriver with odd bolster. Marked Bell System E
Truth 1/2 ratchet...mostly what I'm interested in finding out more about. Found a handful of Truth rats on Google, here, and AA, none of them look like this one.
K-D #278 drum brake measuring tool
3 tapered reamers or deburring tools for a brace. Shiny one is marked Stanley #138-3/4, skinny one is Craftsman #6729, fatter one is an Armstrong #2.
Simonds Super Duty "Weld-Edge" hole saw, 1-3/4, NOS
Two 6" machinst scales, a Starrett and a Sears
3 misc. Plastic fastener slide cards

Dave, I like that early Truth ratchet. This is a 1" drive Truth head and the other is an early New Britain 3/4" that looks similar.

So you have three complete hinges? (two were photoed closed?

If so I'd say the closed are for top and bottom, and the open in the middle. (Middle could be weaker as the top and bottom would take the most load? :dunno: Guessing here. very cool. I'd restore those to working condition and use on a nice garden gate ....

All three are identical. Inside diameter is 1 13/16" top and bottom. They work just fine LOL. May be some kind of clamp too. Guy had a lot of ham radio stuff if that helps any. Maybe something for an antenna?

So closed its a circle? That antenna mast clamp thought has merit if so, although I've never seen Ham/CB antenna gear un-plated, and these days std mast is 1-1/4" OD...

Continuing ...........

Pics 5-8 -
Craftsman 103.22161 8" tablesaw w/ 1/2hp motor dated 1947 (has miter gauge, no fence)
on original stand (the base is rusted so bad that there are huge flakes of rusty chunks coming off)

This was his wife's father's saw (she's also an old friend from before they got married). This is the saw that she learned to cut on, and I promised that once it got restored that I would find it a home with someone who would appreciate it for what it is.
