Two estate sales on the East Side today netted me a couple of goodies.....

SK 1/2dr SAE set, Starrett gage and a set of the older Craftsman Pro screwdrivers and what I think its a wire gage.

It's a jeweler's riveting/staking/forming anvil

Top, NICE find on all that but especially the 110 Buck and the boxed stones!

Can you show better pics on the sheath for the sharpening steel? I have one of the Steels, but not the sheath. Is it military?

Hit the brass with Mother's on that 110 and it will look like new.

Pwr: Nice score on that box! and Yep, Hip roof style. (Gable would be sloped all 4 sides)

Here's some better shots of the steel sheath. it's missing the female side of the snap. No markings other wise. The steel it's self reads Patent pending so maybe they only did the early ones in the leather sheath. I seen the newer ones come with out a sheath at all and an aluminum handle instead of brass.

Thanks!

I think that is very fair and pretty top dollar for an estate sale. I would have bought it, and I've been looking for a KRA21. I've heard people also call them hip roof style boxes. They are a pretty good portable box.
Well it was actually a machine shop liquidation/estate sale. The machine shop was on his home property. the prices were very good. I didnt bring enough cash with me wasnt expecting such good stuff and cheap prices.

The wife grabbed some plastic foam board for me from the craft store today and it works great as drawer liners. It pretty durable and only 89 cents a sheet.

I'm always amazed when I find those vintage SK sets with the little paper ad still in them. That set looks pretty much perfect.

I like to do vintage boxes more era correct in cork sheet. The big box stores sell it in rolls reasonably. I've done a number of vintage boxes in it and had an old American top and roller with it that was probably original, and it actually is very durable.... You do have to give it a bit of time to flatten out, but weighting the cork with tools... :)

Monday a guy listed some vintage tools on Craigslist, most notably a badass 15" disc sander. Nine hit me up about it but it was too late on the disc sander. I was in the area work wise so I stopped by and picked up a Boice Crane spindle sander for $40. I incorrectly identified the gentleman who I purchased it from as the original owner, however he did have all of the original paperwork and a lot of extra supplies. It has a newer motor on it so I figured I couldn't go wrong for the money.

I've wanted one long term once I get back into hobby knifemaking, but was a little leery due to the difficulties in obtaining parts and supplies. But again, for the money I couldn't pass it up. Even though it was located in a fairly remote location, I'm surprised that nobody else picked it up from him in the past few days since he listed it. It appears to run like a champ and the oil on the back is only there due to leakage during transport.

Pick up this Rock Island 574 vise off CL this morning for $ 50.

I have about three Columbians setting on the shelf, not sure why I bought this one. Side effects of this site I guess.

At that price, you got a great deal just on the stand, let alone the BC spindle sander, all those spindles, new motor and sander supplies!!!

Went to an estate sale this morning that listed a "workshop and tools". I arrived 10 minutes after the open to find a good sized workshop with multiple workbenches and custom cabinets and pegboards completely wiped out. Huge let down, as the place had obviously been cleaned out before the sale. Definitely false advertising, all I was able to find were these pliers and this light switch for $5..

Oh well, can't win em all, maybe next time. Does anyone know what these pliers are for? They do not have a name on them, but sure do have some fancy engraving.

Yes, Merc killed it with that spindle sander, what hurts though is the 15" Oliver disc sander that sold minutes before I called for only $75... :headbash: I got caught slipping for real that day. What ***** most is I was laying on the couch playing boom beach before checking CL and seeing the ad.... I wasn't personally interested in the spindle sander so I hit Merc up to let him know about it. I'm having to get picky about what machines I buy since I'm running out of floor space but I could have sold my 12" disc sander to make room for that 15"... :(

So Merc dropped by this morning and we hit a couple sales in my area, we did okay at the first one. I could only find one tool I was interested in at first, the table saw guard but the guy running the sale didn't want to sell it separately at first. He was handing out small paper bags to fill for $10 and plastic shopping bags to fill for $20. I only wanted the saw guard, we went round and round. He wanted $10, I said no thanks and put it down. He asked what I wanted to pay, I had $1.50 in my pocket after buying a book from inside for $0.50, he said he couldn't do a buck fifty on it but would do $5. Again I said I only have $1.50, he came down to $3. I told him I'd look around to see if there was anything else I wanted and maybe come back to it. Merc was filling his $10 bag up so I went and helped him dig through the beer flats of rusty tools. I must have handed him 10# worth or Snap On and Craftsman smalls, the bag was looking heavy! Finally Merc had the bag filled to the point his arm was stretching so he went and paid the man. The guy overheard Merc mention my name and so he called me out by name saying $3 for the saw guard again, I pulled out my $1.50 and showed him that was all I had, finally he agreed! :willy_nil

Second sale we got there a few mins late for a cool art deco tool box full of tools and only thing I found was some cool old machine/engineering books I plan to go get on discount day tomorrow. I'll let Merc show what he scored for the day but here is what I ended up with:

The saw guard(that just happens to fit on my old Craftsman saw, just gotta drill a hole in it to fit my bracket), a paper back blacksmithing book for $0.50 and some Williams tools to fill some spots in my collection that fit in Merc's overstuffed $10 bag. Basically swapped for those so I have $2 in what you see here! The Williams sockets are 19/32 and 25/32, probably never use them but now my 1/2 drive set is complete! There's also a 4" and 8" Williams adjustables, can't have too many of them. :rocker:

I was lurking the previous years thread and thought I should finally join in this year. First find was at an estate sale that didn't look like there was really anything but digging in I found a few Items:

Pic 1-
A smattering of proto, s-k, thorsten Wrenches
Thorsten 3/8 ratchet
Mac Speed Driver
proto, s-k, easco 3/8 Sockets
a Mac Swivel 3/8 Socket (1/2")
Two pliers, The small channel lock one turned out to be a williams (explained why it felt solid despite the small size...)
and a Pick that has NASA on the handle
Total: $12

Pic 2-
The next one was an interesting buy off craigslist where I had my fiancees uncle pick it up for me. Originally $45, he offered $35 and got it. It's a Milman Engineering automatic Tapping machine Model T100B. Solid and heavy, it seems to have the complete gear set inside the housing. No documentation What so ever on the internet, gonna see if the company has any.

Pic 3-
Went to an estate sale this morning saying it was a locksmith and clock collector. Was totally expecting some precision machinist tools but there was barely anything. Either The first couple of people really cleared it out or it wasn't there to begin with (Lots of key Blanks though...)
Did find:
a craftsman adjustable door hole drill that goes from 1 1/8 to 2 1/2
Two traditional oilers (A craftsman and an eagle)
a small yankee vice (good for me since I work on alot of small stuff)
a 1/4" s-k ratchet that needs loosening
a plomb pick?/really small tip screwdriver?
Plomb 3/16 & 1/4 wrench
In Box unused starrett 3/4 holesaw with 1/4 pilot arbor
I thought this was a pick gun at first but I think its a craftsman oil gun with interchangeable tips
Edit: Turns out it's a rivet gun
two pocket watches (which ended up being 20 total so half of what i spent total)
and last but not least a granada research key puncher! was in a bucket on the side of the garage, no idea how to use it or if it's complete but I thought it was an intresting find.
total: $44 (a little on the high side but oh well...)

Well I was out getting with it again today. Two sales, late to the first one but just in time on the second . I got lucky with the lay of the house and spotted the basement first. Bellied up to the work bench and started filling up. Between the two I spent a total of 139.00. More than I wanted to but being first day I knew I was gona get soaked a bit. I think I may come out alright in the end on the stuff I'll flip.
Brass hammer
Floating fish knife
Cool wood mallet ;)
Stanley No. 80 spoke shave
10" "Blue grass" pipe wrench- I think this is a Belknap brand if I'm not mistaken...
Stanley No. 125 combo protractor/ beam compass/ hole gauge-w/ scribe!
True temper jet rocket hatchet- I just picked the matching hammer last weekend!... what are the odds???
Automatic center punch
Craftsman 1/4" socket set, sae/mm /deep
Bonney 1-5/8 socket 3/4" dr. -Still working on piecing a 3/4 set together.
Starrett thread gauge
2- American locks w/ key
Vermont Thread file
1-60 drill bit index
Craftsman "Rethread Set" -never used- crown logo
4 Adjustable wrench's-proto, crescent, diamond horse shoe and Utica, 12,8,6,4"
Snap-on 1/4" swivel socket set
Snap-on & Proto crows foot socket sets
Littco 112 vise
Zyliss vise -Swiss made
5" wire wheel
6" craftsman C- clamp
Red Devil putty knife
420's channel locks
Indestro and craftsman wrench's
Then my favorite of the day is the old rusty, crusty NB -None Better- New Brittan tool box. It's in rough condition and missing one latch but if I can get the art work remade for this I think it will be just bad A$$ ! Oh and inside the box was just a bunch of mixed old tools like Keystone hex sockets, Plomb , old Craftsman, and Williams sockets. Then a mix of old wrench's like Billings, Fairmount, Wakefield

One sale in the morning then done for the week. Getting healed up and back to wErk Monday...

Went back to last weeks basement sale to see if the garage door was fixed yet. It was. They fixed it during the week. The problem was that they wouldn't leave the key with the guy running the sale because they were afraid that he would loose it. You guessed it. The garage couldn't be opened because the family lost the only key. View media item 38281
They were trying to get a locksmith over there, so I'll have to try again tomorrow morning.
In the meantime, I did another tour of the basement. This time there wasn't much worth grabbing in the leftovers, but I did come out with something for another $10.

It's a Craftsman Commercial #65141 early 60's Crowntop toolbox, with the tray. Unfortunately it was in a flood, so the the bottom is in rough shape, I'm not sure yet if it's salvageable. I'll have to look into it later after it's been cleaned up some. The paint is peeling on the sides, and it looks like there were handles on the sides that were removed. If it didn't have the Commercial logo, I wouldn't have touched it. The thing is heavy at 18lbs empty. I'd hate to have to haul it around with a full load of tools in it.

I also got a 9" brass plated wall hook to hang aprons on in the shop.

Bought some odd items today. First this triple swiveling machinist vise, marked only with JAS. 5" jaws, 70 lbs, works super. Pd $ 100. Wish I knew who made it.

Second this very old anvil. Small, good rebound, about 20 lbs. Pd 40. Ive never seen one like this.

Third. Here's an odd one, a Jacobs Self-actuating keyless chuck. 1/2" capacity, Designed for use in pneumatic or electric hammer drills. I have no idea what i'm going to do with it. Paid $10

Second stop today, a estate sale.
A set of what I thought was Muller screwdrivers. When I got to looking at them, some are stamped Tusker Germany. I thought he shape along with the straight thru shank with a hex was pretty neat. Didn't find anything during a quick search of who makes these. The handles are Wera/Wiha type.

Edit- I think the name Muller is the guy who may of had a patent on this design. Still looking.

How do you guys afford to do this every weekend? I try to get in one day a week and every time i go out i spend almost $100 and my garage is so full right now i can barely walk in it. Do you guys sell most of the things you buy at these sales to recoup your cost every weekend?

I only buy things that are super cheap unless I really need it and most importantly I always try to buy something to flip that will at least cover what I spend. The hard part is letting things go but unless you have unlimited budget, it's the only way to keep at it.

Well Codyit's a lil both. I buy , sell and keep. Or I upgrade my current tool collection. I don't think I'll ever have every thing I want because every time I go out I find some thing else to keep!... at least for a while. I guess I keep maybe 25 % and sell or trade the rest. It's kinda cool to buy something for a buck or two and trade it for some you want that cost a hundred! Or buy something for a dime... yeah $0.10 cents (happened twice last year) and sell it for 80 bucks. Wall street can't get those kind of returns! So sell some of those gems you've been piling up so you can keep rolling. Remember it's not how you sell , it's how you buy!

If it fits, it ships! I sell small things that fit in free usps packages on ebay and larger things on cl mostly but really wherever I can make the most off of it. I save the less valuable things that's not worth putting a lot of work into selling for a garage sale of my own. Things like the bulk tools in the box you buy for the ratchet that's in it. Sell that ****! It can be as much or more work selling as buying so you gotta think about how/where you'll sell it and research how much you can get BEFORE you buy it.
