I needed a little stress relief today after seeing how the local powers that be screwed up the whole downtown area. The main E/W roads were closed for a parade but no provision was made for detours or signage. A 10 minute drive took almost an hour.

Anyway. I made a few stops and found something at a couple of them.
First stop got me a fan and a chainsaw. The fan works great and the saw has good compression and feels like it should be good when I put fuel in it. Price was good in any case even if it needs a little love.

Last stop netted me some metric tools. Complete drill index from 6 to 10mm in 0.1 increments. Micrometers from Kunkel and mitutoyo, metric folding rules and a no-name digital vernier gauge. The adjustable wrench is a German VBW, previously unknown to me. Lastly 3 soldering irons, Weller, Ungar and radio shack. The seller threw in a bag of no-name sockets. That was it for me. The budget was spent.

Very slow day. Flea market was half empty, and only three other stops one of which was a bust...

First yard-sale: 100 ft role of Sisal rope - I'm all stocked up for the next time I have to redo the cat's scratching post.., and the how-to book is for my oldest daughter as she is getting interested in such things. The bags of hardware are 4-40 and 2200 nuts, and 4710 lock washers. part numbers match Oleanders so good stuff... the gas nozzle is for an old jeep can, hard to get in the land of the CARB... $6 all

Craptain - I have that exact same fan (in much worse condition) in my grandparents camp. It still runs and pushes a lot of air, even on the low setting.

Great finds. I might be interested in some of the Bell System items. The vise grips were most likely modified for crimping some kind of splice.

The guy I got these from had more installers tools although I didn't see bell systems on them.....if it doesn't rain tomorrow I might go back and see what else I can find......

PM me and I'll make you an offer you can't refuse on the bell stuff.....:bounce:

Only a couple saves yesterday, the fleas are getting a little empty as we get closer to SNOW-time.

All for $8

Very old adjustable wrench, Craftsman 16-oz claw hammer head, a small Chicago C-clamp, and a Ford-marked head bolt wrench.

If you think that one's odd - you should see this one I saved today!

Pic 1: all for $7
Xcelite screwdriver with exchangeable bit, Craftsman Phillips, Italian scissors, welding hammer, DOE wrench by Controlled Steel, two early Craftsman sockets, and two "RAY" marked square nut sockets made by Packer Auto.

Pic 2-5: $5 for the wrench
A very interesting adjustable wrench, size is adjusted by turning the hex-shaped handle, which moves the jaw in or out. Only markings on it, on one side "Hibernia" and the clover leaf indicating manufacture at Hibernia Tool Works, other side is "Wm. Marples & Sons, Sheffield". I looked online and I can't find ANY pics of a similar wrench. Probably turn of last century. Worth a Lincoln!

that's an interesting monkey wrench DTM. I don't think I've see an example like that.

its a vandergrift, pretty common, not limited to but it was made for the international harvester co.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Cas...nkey-Wrench-/322342231420?hash=item4b0d181d7c

from "alloy artifacts",

Vandegrift Manufacturing Company

The Vandegrift Manufacturing Company was a maker of nut and pipe wrenches, founded by Theodore F. Vandegrift and operating in Shelbyville, Indiana. The company was active from around 1891 through at least 1905. Many (if not all) of the company's products were based on patents issued to Vandegrift.

Some Vandegrift wrenches were made under contract for various farm machinery companies, and these tools may be marked with names such as International Harvester or McCormick.

Vandegrift No. 5 Monkey Wrench

[Vandegrift No. 5 Monkey Wrench]
Fig. 241. Vandegrift No. 5 Monkey Wrench, with Inset for Side View, ca. 1897-1905.
Fig. 241 shows a Vandegrift No. 5 monkey wrench, marked with a number "5" and the patent notice "Pat. Sep 7 97" cast in the handle.

The overall length is 8.4 inches, and the finish is plain steel.

The patent notice corresponds to patent #589,765, issued to T.F. Vandegrift in 1897.

Picked this up off craigslist. Snap-on SSDMR4B black hard handle ratcheting screwdriver. Advertised as new but it has been lightly used. For $40 I'm not complaining, it's going to be a Christmas gift for my BIL anyway. Made in 2015

Sometimes you can find good stuff by looking through stuff you previously bought. Back in August (post 5234), I brought home an 11-drawer tool chest full of tools for $250. I've since sold off enough Snap-on tools and stainless steel tubing fittings to more than cover my purchase price and the chest is still pretty populated.

Today I was looking through the drawers again and noticed a few items I had missed previously. With my above sales factored in, these are all essentially free.

In addition to the unused 5-pack of Sawzall blades and NAPA air chuck, I spotted a narrow tube in the third compartment of this drawer. Turned out to be a glass 300-degree chemical thermometer. Cool.

A McKaig-Hatch No 612 12-oz ball peen, a pair of Ridgid pipe wrenches, a bigger Stillson pipe wrench, and a still-in-wrapper pair of USA-made Craftsman socket holders.

It looks exactly like your 10" version but I've cleaned the rust off of all the flat surfaces and the shaft and there is no makers mark anywhere! :dunno:

Thanks for the reply though!

... the gas nozzle is for an old jeep can...

Outlaw,

Nice fine. Is it brass? If so, it's very early war production. If it's steel, 1942-to-mid-1943. The rare screw-on type of flexible fuel nozzles, used on all 5-gallon fuel cans, were replaced in 1944 by the much more common cam type you see beneath the screw-on brass one in the picture below.

More smalls today...

20161204_090556_zpsji8cnzqt.jpg

More WRIGHT (Aircraft) and PWA pieces (Bonney, New Britain). An unmarked bar, but I never pass up a bar. This one is short but 7/16" diameter and will fit a number of 1/2-inch drive flex-head handles. The 4" slip joints are CEE TEE CO. I have never seen a pair smaller than 6 inches before. A pair of 1930's BON{/}NEY angle-head tappets. The NOS Nicholson box is a dozen Extra Fine ("XF") files, round, 3-inch #2's. Bemis & Call wing-type dividers. No clue on the APOLLO STEERING STABILIZER wrench.

Me and my dad stopped at an estate sale on the way to the hardwood dealer. Here's what I got for $10. All items appear to be unused:

Thorsen Tri-Torque torque wrench 1/2" drive.
Stanley 50' steel tape measure.
Stanley mini flat pry bar.
Enderes mini flat pry bar.

Dave, that's a Spark Plug and Cylinder Head Wrench common to Ford vehicles of the 1930's. Also found in the toolkit on the limited production Ford GP that went up against the Willys MA in 1941 before the Willys MB was selected.

Thanks!!!

In the "Sometimes you win, Sometimes you loose" category ..............

On Friday I put a bid on a few lots from an online estate sale site. The way it works is if you win they give you a time slot to pick the items up, so you can only bid on auctions in your area. No shipping.

I lost all the lots except for one. The contents of three drawers from the workbench.
Most of the stuff was trash, but in one of the pictures there was a nicely shaped body dolly. I bid $15 and won. I figured that anything else that wasn't trash would be a bonus.

Went to the pick up, and wouldn't you know it, the body dolly was missing. :tantrum2:
I grumbled a bit (this is the 2nd time this company has screwed me) and dumped the drawers in a box and came home.

I haven't sorted things out yet (still too disgusted), but I did poke around a bit. The damage isn't too bad. Mixed in with the normal drawer garbage (the majority) and Japanese sockets, I found :

a Pexto monkey wrench
New Britain 3/8-1/2 adapter
a few Fulton DOE wrenches
unknown DOE wrenches
some files
a whetstone
and an SK Tools 45170 3/8dr ratchet

So, while it wasn't a great score like I was looking for, it wasn't a complete loss like I feared.
At least it got me out of the house for a bit. :dunno:

(I'm still miffed about the body dolly though)

I'd have told them to either cough up the dolly or forget it. What they were offering isn't what you bid on.

I thought about it but the truth is, the listing was for the contents of the drawers. There wasn't an itemized list. Since the drawers had contents in them when I got there, and the auction was prepaid, my argument had shaky legs. Per the auction rules, anything left behind would have incurred a disposal fee charged to my credit card. As I stated in my post, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

I'll get over it eventually, just like I did 2 years ago when they screwed me out of a SnapOn toolbox when the owner cancelled the auction after bidding was closed. (I've since learned more of that story, it was a horror show involving elder abuse, drugs, lawsuits, and criminal charges that are still ongoing)

Some arguments aren't worth pursuing.

I hit a Flea Market this AM and found this pair of Pexto 5n6 pliers.

I looked at some other stuff but prices were higher then I was interested in paying for things I didn't really need.

This will probably be it for the 2016 FM Season here in NJ.

Cheers

Dave, that's a Spark Plug and Cylinder Head Wrench common to Ford vehicles of the 1930's. Also found in the toolkit on the limited production Ford GP that went up against the Willys MA in 1941 before the Willys MB was selected.

The 01A prefix means that it was first made in 1941. It was standard through 1948.

The wrenches started with Model T and varied with different spark plug and head nut sizes through the years. I have one that was made for the V8-60.
