What a great story. Good to hear about members meeting up, planned or otherwise!

Last weekend, when the Jacktown event was just on my radar, the air was nearly 70°, and I worried the show would be too balmy. But no worries, ha ha, almost 50° cooler yesterday. There’s something essentially elemental in the contrast between the sharp cold air and the flames that fire the steam engines (and of course the bonfire). One guy had an engine recirculating water (which it also heated) into an open wooden barrel. Nice touch - it’s cool to see the engines DOing something, demonstrating their power; otherwise it’s just noise.

Well, I couldn't stand it. That vise from yesterday was weighing heavily on my mind, so I pried myself out of bed early enough to be half an hour early for half price day. There was nobody at the door, but several appeared to be sitting in their cars/trucks waiting. This shall not stand! sez I. I braved the 15 degree chill (thats about MINUS 8 for you centigraders) to go sit on the porch. The others quickly followed my lead, and by the time opening rolled around there were a couple dozen stalwart souls waiting.
I dashed to the basement and was gratified to find the vise still there. I unbolted it, took it to checkout and then returned to dig deeper at liesure. Lots of stuff still there, but a lot was just junk. I did grab the Indestro 3/8 ratchet though it was frozen. They didn't charge me for it, so it's soaking in penetrating oil right now.
The vise isn't quite as rough as it looks - a lot of surface rust and bad partial repaints, but everything's moving, and the loose jaw face is due to a broken screw; nothing wrong with the casting. $30 for the lot (plus another 15 mile trip)

I got the light fixture from yesterday put up, and I really like it. Lights up that dim corner just fine. A 14W Sylvania LED does the trick.

Well done guys. Nothing here. 7" of snow and 50mph winds pretty much shut the town down.

Looking for the following Plomb Pebbles Wrench 3061

Picked up this nice cabinet for $25 off the Facebook garage sale yesterday, not sure of manufacture but it was built in 1995.

Yeah, I looked at it yesterday and just now. Interesting that when I search for something even though I have the setting to be within 20 miles it shows stuff 300 miles away. I also see LOTS of resellers & business ads. Not good. :(

Cool. I love seeing those little engines. Agreed, when something is running off them it makes for a great exhibit. Next time I hope to spend some time at the exhibits and looking through all the buildings, there are so many of them.

Some pics of my buys. It was several hikes to the car, and CB was kind enough to store a couple items while I walked around. Not without playing a little trick on me though. ;) I admit it was a good one. Earlier I showed him the Proto speeder and he was holding it for me while I walked around. When I came back to get it out of his trailer he had switched it out with an old Craftsman speeder with the spinner knob. I looked at it like :wtf: that’s not mine, and he insisted it was the one I left there. He’d hid mine under something. :lol_hitti What a jokester!

Pic 1: I splurged a little bit and bought a 24” Snap On ratcheting driver.
The rest are a Snap On pick, flat blade Par V stubby screwdriver, and #2 phillips, and a Mac #2.

Pic 2: bought the box for 6 bucks with the wrench. Part Indestro 1/2” set but I wanted the couple old Snap On pieces.

Pic 3: hand seamer, Heller hammer, puller pad, Bonney spring pliers, Peugot France drain plug wrench, Craftsman adjustable driver, Plomb wrench, Vulcan wrench, P&C and Taiwan 4” adjustables.

Pic 4: no 1 Record Vise. I want to try and repair it, the pin holding the screw is sheared off.

Pic 5: 50cent Non-reading Craftsman torque wrench. Worth the 50 cents for the NB mechanism.

Two Snap On 3/4 breaker bars, one with a Williams handle.

An unusual long t handle flex socket wrench i couldn’t find a maker while buying it but there are numbers on the socket. Got it back to the car and said those number stampes look a bit like Cornwell. Sure enough, stamped Cornwell on the shaft! What it’s for I don’t know.

Another pocket socket. Rough shape but the sockets are all there and nice.

Last but not least my first flex head speeder ever bought “in the wild”. Finally! Came from Jwitt too! Proto Professional, which I did not have.

First sale today was a gold mine—unfortunately, they were charging karat weight prices for most of it—especially the wooden carpenter’s box full of old woodworking tools that they had taken out and individually priced. $250 just for a Stanley 45 plane… I’ll have to check back on Saturday to see if there are any bargains to be had—bargain in this sense = reasonable price.

Even though everyone's whining about lack of sales this time of year, the sale I'm quoting was only four days ago, but 67 posts ago! :shocking:

Anyway, this is what I found when I went back on the last day of this sale.

19 Jan 20-1.jpg

North Bros. Yankee No. 30 Spiral Ratcheting Screwdriver from pre-Stanley era.

19 Jan 20-2.jpg

S-K Wayne Socket Set #4521 from early Dresser era (’68-’69?) missing 13/16 Deep Socket, 3” extension & 3/8 Drive Ratchet.

19 Jan 20-3.jpg19 Jan 20-4.jpg19 Jan 20-5.jpg

Craftsman box with six 3/8dr (short) Long C standard sockets (Circle U); The box was being sold with just these sockets when I saw it the first day, but today had all the following in it also:

Four small ¼dr sockets with sizes cast inside on the bottom of the hex;
Another older 3/8dr S-K socket set than the one above;
A Crescent 1/2dr, 15/16 deep socket with 3/8 adapter;
Two 1/2dr MAC deep sockets and 3/8 adapter, all marked with Sabina, O.;
Unidentified 3/8dr ratchet,
A Japanese Hex Socket Set with ratchet and ell;
A few misc. sockets and an unmarked universal (bottom looks like the S-K sockets)
The thing in the middle is an aluminum case full of cotter pins.

19 Jan 20-6.jpg

I’m confused about the Craftsman logo on the box. The lettering has the angular design that I’ve read is the Long C logo (with the ‘C’ in the “short” style) but in the Heritage Craftsman thread, I’ve seen this same angular style logo referred to as Heritage. What's the real poop?

Total first-day price was $80. Third day fire-sale price, 10 minutes before the doors closed was $10. I have to admit, despite what I consider outrageous prices on the first day, they really did well. Most of the really good stuff was gone after the second day.

Basically what you are seeing is overlap and probably some leeway given to the MFG.

The angular font has its roots in the Long C Era. Full underline, half or so underline, and shorter underline, as well as some that were just the angular font.

The Heritage round Red/Blue logo had its roots in the tail end of the Long C era, and carried the font with it, if not the full or partial underlines.

Many stamped markings lost the angular font as manufacturers moved on and probably with Sears concurrence to do so. Some that were setup with the angular font likely stuck with it longer, or until directed by Sears to change it.

Just my suppositions, bur the evidence fits...

So is this one considered Long C or Heritage since it's red and blue?

That is a Heritage logo. Anything with the double lines on either side (=CRAFTSMAN=), which echoes the grooves on the tools that MDF made, following the Long C/Long C suppliers, is Heritage. But, as Outlaw mentioned, there was an overlap in the late 40's, at the end of the Long C era, where you see that badge on boxes with Long C tools inside, as Sears was selling NOS. Even the late 40's catalogs show Long C and =CRAFTSMAN= tools on the same pages with boxes bearing =CRAFSMAN= badges.

The box was neither cheap ($100), nor close by (~275 miles away) but I really wanted it. So yesterday I drove there and back again, taking 9.5 hours and making an extra stop that yielded only a couple misc hand tools.

Craftsman 8d rolling cabinet, dated 1955.

Plomb 3420 single open end tappet wrench ($2).

Same here, working on kitchen remodel and camaro is taking up most of my free time.

Seems nothing really worth my time to leave.

Your box looks like the shame shape mine was in! I feel like the paint they used then wasn't that great or everyone that bought these didn't really care where it was kept.

Nice family run estate sale this weekend. Got there early and when the guy showed up he just let me into the basement with all the tools. Got to pick through everything by myself for quite a while. Guy had some really nice big Williams & Armstrong clamps and a Wilton clamp along with a Wilton No.5 press clamp. Found a box full of ABC body hammers and dolly’s.

A lot of Craftsman tools. Two 1/2dr deep well socket sets, one in a metal Craftsman case. Two sets of the salts wrenches, set of thin tappet wrenches and a 3pc set of large metric wrenches. Old Cman swivel socket set, 1/2dr RHFT, 3/8dr (H) ratchet and a bit ratchet. Two General ratcheting tap drivers and two Mitutoyo drill gages and a sheet metal gage.

Probably not really worthy of this thread, but thought I would share anyway. Went to a flea market on Sunday and happened across a table that had a few 3/8” ratchets. The seller gave me a price of $4 each. I looked over them and there were several no names with plastic selectors, a Craftsman and three others with knurled handles. I checked them out, two S&K 45170 and a New Britain NB44. All were a little gummy feeling and show a wear. I offered $10 for all three and he took it. I brought them home and opened them up and sure enough, they needed a good cleaning. I brushed everything up, dropped the parts into some ATF fluid and let them sit until tonight. I dried everything out, wiped them down and reassembled with Super Lube. They are all three really quiet and smooth.

I had a nice weekend at the beach with the wife, and while I wasn't able to talk her into a flea market, we did end up going to several antique stores.

I picked up the box at a standard antique mall, but the Snap-on strike over and Craftsman speeder came out of a nice architectural salvage place. They had good prices and interesting things, so that is a place I will go back to. They had these also, but at higher prices than I liked:

Looks like a midcentury Craftsman-theme going on...
Rileysan- the box is beautiful.
Rickster- dayaam! If that’s karma, you’ve been doing a lot of good deeds lately.
I had my recently-found 1/2dr flying-V ratchet apart yesterday for cleaning and re-lubing. Works great. Then watched Gearwolf’s long-sector/butterfly-selector ratchet history video. Cool stuff, but now I’m wondering about the 3/8dr - the raised panel is rounded like the long-selector generation. I guess it’s probably at the earlier end of the production years.
I held off from sale hunting today and drove up PA476 (12°F at the Bear Creek exit) to meet a buddy and take a hike on some state forest land north of Wilkes-Barre. Passed some impoundments that had ice around the margins, but no ice fishing yet. We took a break along the trail to make tea on his pack stove, and I bragged up the stoves and lanterns some of you guys have found and posted on the GS thread. He says there’s a bit of collection of lanterns in his parents’ cellar, which he’s likely to be clearing out for sale (the house) sometime after spring. I remember his dad had a LOT of Craftsman woodworking tools, though I’m pretty sure my buddy’s younger brother has those now. I’ve offered to help whenever he’s ready, so I’ve got that cave of wonders to look forward to.

Picked up this Craftsman 6500 crown top logo box for 10 bucks at a flea market with a Diamond Calk 4” adjustable wrench, snap on DBOE 1/2-9/16 and random Bonney refrigeration wrench for 10 bucks. Box needs some love but I’m enjoying cleaning up old boxes to put back into use anyway.

Also picked up the snap on 3” 1/2 drive extension and Williams S52 1/2” drive ratchet for 12 bucks at the same flea market.

Scored a few small items over the weekend. Park 18F toolbox in rough shape, boxes of lock rekeying parts (for the metal box) (any value in pins JeffMoss?), fuller for a pair of blacksmith friends to fight over, hook, two P&C wrenches, one Proto.

The Park will make an appearance at the vintage toolbox thread, looking for paint color ideas.

I stopped by an estate sale on Sunday, and spied a drywall taping knife, which I need for a bathroom remodel, and got to looking around. Sunday was "fill a bag for $10" day, so I started grabbing stuff. Here's what I came up with:
Drywall taping knife
Food scale
Safety glasses
Graduated punch set (Millers Falls)
Old square file
2 hose clamps
2 ratcheting box wrenches (Proto 1182, Williams RB810)
14 big thick washers
Robinair thermometer with case
3 offset screwdrivers
MAC X104 4-point socket
Morse 1361 (12) 1/16" drills - high speed steel
5 misc masonry drills and EZ-outs
Scratch awl
Feeler gauges w/ruler
6 Yankee screwdriver bits (yes, I own a Yankee screwdriver)
5 big allen wrenches (Unbrako 3/8", 1/2", rest unmarket)
and
MAC SS2m spring flat-blade screw starter with magnet
Proto 9884 spring Philips-blade screw starter with magnet

Just realized I accidentaly posted this in the new tools thread when I meant to post it here. Oops!

I was browsing the local classifieds last night and found an ad for $2 wrenches. There was only one bad photo, but I thought I recognized the script on one of the wrenches as Snap-on. I sent a message last night to get an address and broke out of work for a few minutes today to head over there.

Picked up...

2 MAC wrenches
1 Williams Superrench
Plomb WF-79 DBE
Carlyle 13mm (only picked this up because the lighting in the garage was terrible and the font for the sizing looked like Snap-on.) :lol_hitti
Blue Point 10mm
Blue Point 9mm ratcheting wrench
Snap-on 19,18,17,16,15, and 14mm ratcheting wrenches
Snap-on 13mm
Snap-on 10mm
Snap-on 5/16"
Snap-on 3/4" stubby wrench

Took the lot home for $34 :bounce:

Nice haul on the Snap-on Ratcheting wrenches.
I would have been going crazy looking for the smaller sizes that surely were sold as part of a set since you found 14 through 19mm.
Picture looks like 0° offset non reversing, correct?
Haven't run across those.

Snagged two more cabinets today, factory closing down in town and these were left over from the liquidation auction. Paid $40 for the pair. Just need to get keys.

I’m calling Shenanigans: that’s TARS and CASE from Interstellar. I can’t believe they sold for such a low price. Better be careful; I hear those former USMC tactical ‘bots can be tricky to reprogram.
