Better you should use dowels. The originals were hardened. Even them we had to replace them often in the tool crib.
Or used-up HSS drill bit shanks?

What a great story. Good to hear about members meeting up, planned or otherwise!
Last weekend, when the Jacktown event was just on my radar, the air was nearly 70°, and I worried the show would be too balmy. But no worries, ha ha, almost 50° cooler yesterday. There’s something essentially elemental in the contrast between the sharp cold air and the flames that fire the steam engines (and of course the bonfire). One guy had an engine recirculating water (which it also heated) into an open wooden barrel. Nice touch - it’s cool to see the engines DOing something, demonstrating their power; otherwise it’s just noise.
that’s not mine, and he insisted it was the one I left there. He’d hid mine under something.
What a jokester!
First sale today was a gold mine—unfortunately, they were charging karat weight prices for most of it—especially the wooden carpenter’s box full of old woodworking tools that they had taken out and individually priced. $250 just for a Stanley 45 plane… I’ll have to check back on Saturday to see if there are any bargains to be had—bargain in this sense = reasonable price.

Basically what you are seeing is overlap and probably some leeway given to the MFG.
The angular font has its roots in the Long C Era. Full underline, half or so underline, and shorter underline, as well as some that were just the angular font.
The Heritage round Red/Blue logo had its roots in the tail end of the Long C era, and carried the font with it, if not the full or partial underlines.
Many stamped markings lost the angular font as manufacturers moved on and probably with Sears concurrence to do so. Some that were setup with the angular font likely stuck with it longer, or until directed by Sears to change it.
Just my suppositions, but the evidence fits...

Sounds and looks like you had a great time 3bay!! What's the publish date on the NB catalog?
That is a Heritage logo. Anything with the double lines on either side (=CRAFTSMAN=), which echoes the grooves on the tools that MDF made, following the Long C/Long C suppliers, is Heritage. But, as Outlaw mentioned, there was an overlap in the late 40's, at the end of the Long C era, where you see that badge on boxes with Long C tools inside, as Sears was selling NOS. Even the late 40's catalogs show Long C and =CRAFTSMAN= tools on the same pages with boxes bearing =CRAFSMAN= badges. So is this one considered Long C or Heritage since it's red and blue?

I've been reading y'alls posts and then going out to check Facebook Marketplace on breaks from hanging drywall, but am finding nothing compelling enough to make me extend the break. Keep hunting, gents!

The box was neither cheap ($100), nor close by (~275 miles away) but I really wanted it. So yesterday I drove there and back again, taking 9.5 hours and making an extra stop that yielded only a couple misc hand tools.
Craftsman 8d rolling cabinet, dated 1955.
Plomb 3420 single open end tappet wrench ($2).

Worthy.Probably not really worthy of this thread...Went to a flea market...two S&K 45170 and a New Britain NB44. I offered $10 for all three and he took it.
