I don't know what i was thinking, but for some reason i bid on this pallet of Cross Check Torque Seal. I paid $125 for 1,400 tubes of this stuff. It's selling for $7 a tube on eBay, but that's a lot of selling to get rid of it all!

My wife is going to kill me!

Let’s do some quick math.

$125 bid + (15% auction premium?) + (tax 8.25%?) = $155.61
$155.61/1400= $0.1115 cost per tube
To be competitive on ebay you charge $7 and ship free.
$7.00 – ($0.11115 cost) - ($0.70 ebay fee) – ($0.50 paypal fee) – ($3.50 avg. shipping) = $2.19 profit/tube
$2.19 – (packaging) - (your time to pack and ship these things over the next five years) = Yeah, she’s gonna kill you.

Use eborcim's suggestion and sell for $5/tube = You're already dead and buried in the backyard.

Sell packages of eight colors for $40. Otherwise shipping will make it hard to sell.

Sell the whole lot for $100, recoup most of your money and let the next guy try his luck.
Keep 1 tube as a reminder.

Just kidding, I have done similar things that cost much more. Good luck- however you proceed.

JABgj & RTM,
Thanks for the links. It inspired me to look on eBay, too.
Yes, they can be had in a number of grits and material.

to get rid of it all!
Get RID of it? And the advice so far seems to support this pessimistic view.
(Rolling up sleeves) fluorescent paint that cracks easily, right? Hmm..who wouldn’t want some of that? And it comes in eight colors!!!
(Consulting motivational literature) you had a use for one tube, right? This is YOUR OPPORTUNITY to expand your business. After a sweet deal like that, you don’t want to get OUT, you want to get IN DEEPER! Buy an airline, or some other business where vibration and tampering with fasteners is a big problem. Think how much more secure your equipment will be compared to your competitors’!
With Mars just around the corner and the Space Force, aerospace startups are going to be a yooge market, and you’re getting in on the GROUND FLOOR...nowhere to go but Up, now.
My wife is going to kill me!
More negative self-talk! $125 seems a bit petty for murder. This test may strengthen your relationship, in the long run.

Does the stuff have a shelf life?

Yes. The shelf life is 2 years. So I may be already screwed.

This is the problem when you just go to eBay and look at the “Sold” listings. There are about 50 auctions that closed in the last 3 months where people bought this paint - at $7 a tube or so.

I’ve gotta move 1,400 tubes! Hope it’s shelf life is not all used up.

All kidding aside I like Seber’s $40 for eight colors idea the best. And you don’t have to sell through all of it. Just sell until you recover your investment plus the cost of disposing of the remainder. Everything after that is gravy.

I love finding Starrett items in the random sales I come across, but too many people know the price of them, so I don't buy too often.
Your post reminded me of a little purchase a few months back. Bought a few of them, not opened any yet, still have a few big boxes open to get through.

I like that idea!! $40 for 8 or even 10.

I have the advantage where I can severely discount the product to where others can’t even compete!

Finally found a decent dust collector.

2HP and the thing is a beast. I’m glad I got this instead of the harbor freight one i was planning on. Had a nice 12” impeller and 5” intake port.

Now to build a 2 stage system with a super dust deputy.

paid $150.

if the shelf life is already up, just take a box off the pallet and leave the rest there if you haven’t already picked it up.
Or I would try to get it in qty vs singles. blow it out cheap to get your money back at least.

That's mine! Different color, brand, but it's the one I bought new. Yes it works great. Piped all my woodworking tools, blast gates at each, but never bothered with the 2-stage mod. And I paid about $150 for it.
...but that was around 25 years ago!

Bulk sales are a good idea to move the materials. Padded envelopes are the cheapest to send less than a pound. If you ship in bulk, charge for the shipping.

Right place at right time I guess.

Thanks eborcim,

i'm picking up the pallet next week. I'm gonna wreck the Torque Seal market like Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd did to frozen concentrated orange juice in Trading Places.

Anyone who has stock in Dykem better short that sucker!

Question, as I've been lurking this thread for a while now: how do you guys find these various garage sales, antique sales, estate sales, liquidation sales, etc.? I look around Craigslist and find local stuff, but you guys seem to find some pretty crazy tools, especially heavy machinery. Am I looking in the wrong places for those kinds of sales?

Swung by a Restore today, and surprise, surprise, there was a lot of good wrenches there.

Two Plomb LA, 2 Proto LA's (one long!), a Cornwell DBE, the oldest Wright I have ever seen (hand forged) an prestine Snap-on and an SK saltus. I also dug this little guy out of the screwdriver bin:

all that for $8.

That's my go-to site for estate sales, my preferred venue for best bang-for-the-buck. I also occasionally sift thru Facebook Marketplace's Tools section looking for bargains.

How much do you suppose a new carb and fuel tank will cost - assuming you can find them!

Well.... start off with a thorough fuel system cleaning and new fuel lines. Costs almost nothing and it's worked for me (sometimes ) Good Luck!

hmmm... has compression- that means it *****-- and so do you, if you can get it running

ReStore find, BMCo screwdriver. Overall length 13", blade width 3/8". Found some info on the manufacturer on AA. Any way to figure an actual date or range of production?

:shocking: Wow! A Braunsdorf-Mueller "perfect handle" screwdriver!! Please post that in the BMCo thread 1. There's a link to it in the Index in the Sticky at the top of the Vintage Discussion board. I have a small Braunsdorf-Mueller collection and I can tell you it is few and far between that you see it in the wild. I will comment further there.

Quick pickup today.
went to go look at this stand and asked what else was for sale.

91df2c361574d8f25014e168b5a1d6a9.jpg
The guy had some really nice equipment including a big old powermatic drill press with adjustable speed. Of course not for sale. He did pull out two 1/2HP block grinders.
A little beat but I bought them.
everything for $150.

Thursday's haul from a CL advertised estate sale:

Kennedy 526-9370 8-drawer Machinist's Chest and nine S-K combo wrenches. $25 all in.

20 Feb 20-1.jpg20 Feb 20-2.jpg20 Feb 20-3.jpg

As usual, I can't determine the era for Kennedys beyond the fact that this one is after the Kennedy Kits logo. The PO had pasted a manufacturing ******/secure area pass to the inside lid that had an expiration date on it from 1980. That and the fact that the carrying handles are from square stock are the only clues I have to offer. Oh, and the felt lining in all the drawers is in good shape.

20 Feb 20-4.jpg

This group is sequential from C-32 (1") down to C-22 (11/16) then skips to C-18, then skips again to C-14 (six sided closed end) and finishes with a 10mm.

Also got a bucket of parts with it including the tank and clutch assembly. Also got a Briggs 450.

He’s looking for a oil water separator so I’ll give him a SMC one that I have laying around.
