I was at an estate sale yesterday kind of close to the Badlands and saw a buyer that was leaving with a green color Coleman lantern and a two burner Coleman stove. I walked up to him and said “You must be Outlaw”. He looked at me like I was crazy and said “Outlaw”? Definitely embarrassed, I attempted to explain my mistake. I guess there are other Coleman collectors around. He said that he usually fixes them up and sells them.
Anyway, my copilot was available today so we tried a couple of estate sales. The first one was about 10 minutes away in Berkeley. We found some Craftsman wood bits and some Starrett hacksaw blades along with a few tools. The second sale in Hayward produced a Barcalo DBE, a hard to find D-I 1-1/8” socket, some Proto, some more Craftsman, a few Snap-on and a rusty Powr-Kraft adjustable. The Barcalo was a nice addition to the Barcalo board.

:lol_hitti

Yeah there are quite a few collectors around! I'm not the only crazy guy! :pimpflash If toy want a shock go look up what the Japanese collectors will pay! Coleman actually has Japanese only lines they export! :shocking:

I know you went to an estate sale in my town in the past few months. I recognized the plunder and you mentioned my town. We went different days however.

I think I've only met one person from GJ randomly like that and I was selling a roller at the time.

I've met up with several people from GJ, but it was planned meetups.

Some great posts/pickups here this weekend. Tex and Outlaw, your lanterns are cool! Don, your Heritage box and the big D-I are nice. Is the D-I plain steel, or ???

Outlaw, your No. 5 skillet is a Birmingham Stove Range (BSR) Century Series, made sometime from the 60s to when they closed in 1992 or 93. Not a lot of collector demand for them, but they're GREAT users. You **** for that Favorite No. 10!

My brother is just getting into cast iron cooking.
Outlaw, how do you suppose your Griswald got that huge scrape on the bottom?

Right now I'm not sure if its someone with a welder and grinder, or a huge glop of gunge that I can get off. I'm hoping for the latter!

Last week's pickups. The Crock Pot was to "cook" rusty tools in during the cold temps with either Evaporust or its Rustoleum competitor. Walther 3-9x40 scope is unfortunately made in China. Various small pliers have been through a cycle in the CrockPot and are likely now permanently stained deep black.

Fenwick rod case was an interesting find, and has an entry level Reed Tackle (60s-70s?) Featherweight rod in it. Planning to use that as step 1 into fly fishing.

Outlaw, FWIW, I'm in the midst of restoring one of those BSR Century No. 5 skillets. It's kicking my ****, so it'll be into the e-tank before long. They're good trade bait/gifts to folks who're new to cast iron.

I picked up this Cleveland Ezy-Out Screw Extractor set from an estate sale this weekend, for $5. The number 4 extractor is the only one that shows usage.

I’ve never needed an extractor, but like they say, “It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.”

Hope I never need it! Ha!

GPW, try a fine wire wheel on the Evaporust residue with a light buffing action.

Were you on a high heat or the low setting?

Maybe this is a new way to get a black oxide type finish? :dunno:

Steve,
It may have started out Black Oxide but that’s long gone and it’s plain steel now. Here are a couple more shots of the Heritage box. What year is the little Walco pipe wrench you found?

I’ve got a bigger Jet and a little Delta already, but there seems to be a bunch of talk about these Craftsman block grinders here and other places so I’ve wanted to check one out for a long time. I gave $60 for this guy on OfferUp which is probably all the money? My Jet does all I need and the Delta is great for small jobs so I don’t really have a use for it if they aren’t of much value other than a conversation piece.

It’s super original/complete/and in really awesome shape. Date code is Sept 1981. Thing is a beast, can run off 220 or 120 and came with original wheels too.

Only thing it needs is a new plastic lamp shade and sears still sells it! https://www.searspartsdirect.com/product/53rfa0os96-0009-257/id-4971958.

Also picked up the 6” Cman Pro beak jaw adjustable wrench on another OfferUp deal for $6. Can’t pass up USA craftsman stuff I don’t have for single digit pocket money.

I know I am way behind on this response and that others have already told you this but $60 for this 1 hp is major you ****!. Those go for over $200! They are very well built machines and perform as well as much more expensive machines. Nicely done!

Next Small Haul Only found a few things, But before leaving I spot a rusty old toolbox and make a B line to it. guys asking 10 I offer 5. He looks at it and shakes his head., I take off with the rust box! Plomb ratchet, breaker, and lots of other goodies inside. Yet to clean it all up. The box is pretty neat also. hoping there's some paint under that rust! A buddy sent me a FB market place link to a Dodge vise! I had to play message tag for three days till I got it in my hands. The base is gone and some one had built one and welded the vise to it! I got her fixed up though with very minimal wear n tear!

Wrenches:

VLchek 1 1/4 1 3/8 DBE Never see them this big

Weird squirrelly DOE

Hinsdale Offset DBE x 3

Kelsey-Hayes tool Division BFE

Pliers:

Good looking pliers with a pipe handle? Any clue ?

Hub Cap:

Think its around 37-40 Ford with the cool V8 logo !!

ToolBox:

Rusty and fulla goodies!! Yet to be cleaned up

Vise: Dodge No 40

That dodge vise is killer and I am digging the hub cap!

That's a nice find, Manny! I'm a bit of a Cleveland Twist Drill Co collector, with a few vintage reamers sets in wooden boxes and a No. 15 (doesn't include a No. 6 like yours) Ezy-Out set. The Ezy-Out set is older (pre-1963) than yours (Pic attached below), but I like your see-through lid! As for use, I will admit that the unschooled shade tree mechanic in my youth was more apt to just back the drill out on low speed, or jam something in the hole that was wrenchable, but I have used mine on a few things, including the extraction of a few bolts in one of my flag poles that got sheered off by a gale force storm.

Maybe this is a new way to get a black oxide type finish? :dunno:
True story: the original old way (invented in January 1942, to be precise) used the same method. They cooked tools in a highly alkaline solution at 290-295* F. Sometimes it doesn't require cooking. :)

Very small 'small haul' (Lugz 2020_17) from the flea market this morning.

attachment.php

But you know my motto: Quality over quantity! And these did not disappoint.

The hands-free "miner's lamp" (my first thought, too...) is not a miner's lamp. It has a nice WWII style "USN" marking, and I suspect it was an electrician's, perhaps a mechanic's, maybe even someone working in the engine room. I plan to do a full restoration.

The smaller needle nose pliers are Wilkinson's Made in England. Not to offend our English guests with the analogy, but Wilkinson's was kind of like England's Klein. They supplied the telephone company linesmen with tools, and they were also found in old car kits, including Rolls Royce.

The large needle nose with the wire grip and also a really cool pin holder in the tip are single-line Vacuum-Grip, but original FSP, not Snap/on.

These are Ford wrenches. I was expecting someone to ID these and fill in some information. I'm assuming the Ford wrenches were part of a set provided for Model-T's. But I could be making the whole thing up.

I'm believing the other thing is a dimple die. Isn't there a dimple die guy who could set me straight on the this?

Thanks for your support. :beer::beer:

In terms of the dimple die question, I believe your tool is for working on tarps or other things that need eyelets set? I have dimple dies and the edges are not rounded enough on your tool!

Mmm...The original, original old way was to clean (and polish, if you wanted a “blued” look), then hang up in a warm, damp place until the steel had flash-rusted. Then card off the orange rust (hematite). Then hang again, card, hang, etc, until the steel was evenly black (or blue). Carding is done with a very fine wire brush, purposely leaving a thin layer of magnetite and avoiding buffing down to bright steel.
Not patented, since it has been done since steel was invented, requires no other chemicals than oxygen/water. Too much time between checks for carding allows pitting, of course.
The reason for additional chemical agents is to speed up the process, since it can take weeks, and allegedly, to reduce labor. Considering the cost and toxicity of bluing agents, I prefer good ole time and labor. Properly done, the oxide is more resilient to scratches and wear than the quicker chemical treatments.

So here's a question: It seems extra dead lately, (weather yesterday didn't help) but how is it for others? Are there fewer Yard/Estate sales? Fewer sellers at flea markets? fewer buyers?

Heck I'm seeing fewer CL ads...

I know its not the hot time of the year but compared to other years this time of the year?

Wondering if the panicky talk and reactions for the Corona virus is having an impact?

Dead around here Outlaw almost zero craigslist adds. No yard or garage sales to speak of either.

That has to be the cleanest heritage box I've ever seen! Sure it's not one of those resent heritage badge boxes I used to see at Kmart?

I need to go through my sk tools and identify what I have cause I haven't bought any due to fear of duplicates

D42’s heritage box is the real vintage deal, not the reissue... those are easy to spot. Here are some pictures of one recently on eBay. Note the logo placement and lack of bead rolled details on the front face

The flea was busy today. A little chilly and windy but hard to find parking as always.

Found some ratchets and lots of fun little misc. small items which I like.

Also bought three Snap On metric wrench sets. Line wrenches, flank drive combos, and stubbies. One combo is a USA Blue Point, and a couple of the stubs are Matco and Mac. It was a fair enough deal for the three. I made the seller an offer $200 less than his combined asking price, and he accepted!

Other finds include:

Bonney 1/2” rat (broken selector)
Crescent 1/2”
Mac long 3/8”
Proto Challenger 1/4”

WT Grants 3/8 breaker
Apco Mossberg 1/2” L handle

Snap on duckbill pliers

Craftsman 1/2” t bar
Snap On 3/8” t bar

Utica mini screwdriver

4” Proto Click Stop adjustable
4” Craftsman with the name ground off

Free broken Gearwrench 1/4 rat, missing selector

Free 1/4 Mastercraft combo (Yay, missed it last time when i bought the set, but the seller told me take it before i said a word!)

Vulcan Dynamic hammer head
Snap On puller tip
Channellock adjustable socket
Walden (?) knurled 1/2 female x female connector
2 Eifel-Flash Plierench jaws
4 Plomb 1/4” sockets ( searched around for more of the set but that was it)
Proto crowfoot
1 Plomb and 2 Williams swivels
Snap On mid length 10mm!
Husky 9/32” female to 1/4” male adapter. Didn’t know they sold one.
Herbrand 1/4 breaker bar
Barcalo small doe wrench
2 small Craftsman punches

Estate sale on Friday and I brought home a pair of St. Pierre adjustable pliers. Garage Sale early Saturday morning netted me the Ryobi-1 tools, Vice Grips and a Husky metric ratcheting wrench set. Pretty good weekend!

Bought these never used but not new sk made craftsman metric stubbies off eBay for $40 shipped. They’re very lightly engraved. For users I am very happy but now I need to fill in the gaps per my ocd [emoji23][emoji849]

I know. Unless they get separated. They were just chillin’ in the drawer of a roll cab with not much else. I probably overlooked the jaws before, but the pliers were nowhere in sight.
I have the pliers with no extra jaws. If you'd care to reunite it with those jaws you just found, let me know. I'll send it right along - in exchange for your Braunsdorf-Mueller adjustable wrench.

I cleaned up that wartime US Navy hands-free trouble lantern I found today and started a thread on it full of pics and info on the company (The Metal Ware Corp. Two Rivers, Wisc., which made waffle irons and coffee percolators before the war!!), linked here.

Hit up two local garage/estate sales and got the bunch for $20.50. Red box has 6+ lb of leaded solder inside, which more than makes up for what I paid. Some loose New Britain, Mac, Matco, and Craftsman, plus a cool Soldapult vacuum solder sucking tool (hidden in the picture).

Gidge I don't often see those in hand crank, at least from the factory.

This is an example of one of the first portable sewing machines (Model 99) which was first released in in 1911.

These (Model 99) machines were made well into the 1950s, and evolved over the years adding bakelite, and then electricity and eventually a plastic housing.

Not a purchase but took some pics of this box today. Cool that it's strictly Sears branded.

Drawers worked great, but yet another rusty and musty top chest I don't have room for.

The sad part is it was only $20.
