I've never seen a figure or letter set that small. I have several, with the smallest being 1/8". Wartime sets were 1/8", 3/16", 3/8" and 1/2". Nice find! That could come in very handy.

Well, between us, we have the entire Lufkin radius gage line! :) I have a Lufkin No 77C radius gage set in the same maroon hammered vinyl pouch. Found and reported here back on the 2018 thread. Link to dedicated thread with catalog pics here.

I'm curious if people are commingling the same as before (as if there is no pandemic going on...) or what, Beemer? Same question for you, Tex? Are people staying away from each other? Wearing latex gloves? Letting only a few people in at a time? How are these "sales" still happening? I've been itching to get out to one of my fleas (like today, like right now as I am typing this, in fact), guessing that people are ignoring the orders, but it's too many people ignoring the orders that I am worried about. On a normal day it would be impossible to keep a safe distance from people and not even the width of the tables wold keep the sellers safe distance away from me.

I don't consider myself an expert, but you are correct. Sounds counterintuitive, but the classic underline logo is not the only logo they used in the "Underline C" era. There's also a sort of half-assed underline where the C only goes under the r. But, unless the logo pushes back against your hand or thumb when you're holding that caliper, I am pretty sure you meant to type geometric, not isometric! :)

You are correct lugz, I meant geometric

Last month I had 1 kid (a son, #5 of 5) at home, a junior in HS. Now I have 4 at home! LOL. Oldest daughter (kid #2) didn't want to be stuck in her apt in Brooklyn, so she came home. Ditto kid #3 (son). Kid #4 (daughter) is home from college. Only kid not home is 32YO son in the Army. I was almost an empty nester, now all of a sudden I feel like I'm a 40 year old dad again!

Amen.

Lugz, enjoy having the kids back home while you can!

Around here thay will add some verbage to the effect of "due to the corona virus..." just to keep people from complaining and wondering. And still stopping by.

I had posted 3 toolboxes on CL yesterday evening. Two excellent condition Craftsman Crown boxes (one hip roof) and a Kennedy K-20. Got immediate replies to buy them but after sleeping on it (we were going to meet this morning) I've decided I'm done for the duration of this outbreak. The wife said last night her throat felt scratchy so I slept in a different bedroom. Sure hope she's imagining the symptom or it turns out to be allergies from the live oak trees.

Good choice. I’m selling some tools on eBay but leaving the packages on the front porch to be picked up by the mail carrier. Not enough distancing by a customer last week at the post office.

Lugz, Here in Travis County (Austin) the population is over 1.2M. Last Sat we had confirmed cases in the low 60s by Mon it had increased by 50% to low 90s. We are now at 137 confirmed cases. Tue at midnight the county and city went on a stay-at-home order. That's in place until April 13. I read this morning about the first death in Central Texas with the death of a New Braunfels man in his 40s. I think by and large people are taking this seriously. I have not been seeing any estate/garage sales advertised. I went to Costco and the grocery store on Tue. There were a few people who seemed completely oblivious to social distancing. I actually was wearing a new dust mask from the shop and latex gloves while I was out.

I hope everyone takes the COVID-19 seriously. No possession is worth risking your health, your life, or your family. This certainly isn't the killer like past pandemics in human history but it's unprecedented in my lifetime and in my parent's generation.

Here's the GSALR.com view of the Boston area this weekend. Nada. Would normally be a dozen or more on a nice day like today.

Amen.

My son is home from college with us. My daughter's up in Maine, waiting for her fiance to be released from his research vessel crew duties. The inbound crew is fine--they've been at sea for weeks--it's the relief crew they want to quarantine for 2 weeks to ensure the new folks don't bring the virus onboard.

Picks from earlier in my life, the following cant count for the 2020 thing...

Oil-less Air compressor from a dumpster, mostly works. Doesn't build much pressure beyond ~85 psi - dumpster

That compressor sure looks happy that you saved it from the dumpster, Zack!]

Definitely more of a blessing than a curse, so far. My daughter has a lot of anxiety. She is an associate general counsel for StubHub. Think about their business model. But I have enjoyed eavesdropping on her teleconferences, listening to her think on her feet, handle office dynamics, mete out assignments, etc., an experience I would not have otherwise had. And we're all playing lots of board games - when they're not streaming something, that is. (Can you imagine if this happened 15 years ago before their lives revolved around their internetted phones and iPads?)

I am using my time to attend to projects. I am in the midst of a major cleaning and re-organizing of the Lugzsonian, saving space for a wooden tool chest I have been keeping under wraps in Unaiu's garage. (He picked it up for me at a more-or-less-local-to-him CL sale and we are waiting for the plague to pass to complete a trade.) I refinished a Williams Bantam box for mrbill. Made a couple reproduction New Britain decals. And I am 95% complete on a major toolbox restoration. I am soooo psyched to unveil it here but can't yet. It's too humid and not warm enough to paint today. I painted 3 days ago and yesterday. This morning I re-clad the leather handle. I need one more day to paint some accent items.

Some more goodies from the box of tools I picked up this week. The PO did QC (Quality Control) in the aerospace industry. What are these things (most of which still have wax on the ends) that many have "Go" and "No Go" on opposite ends? I suspect something to do with the aerospace industry or airplane manufacture as one of them is branded Pratt & Whitney. I also found a couple of Mitutoyo micrometer standards - 1" & 2". Figured out what the Starrett tool was in the wooden box Universal Dial Test Indicator 196A. It's only missing 2 of the 3 contact points which are still available from Starrett. It also needs the cover replaced on the dial indicator. Hoping Starrett still has these.

Those are no-go gauges. You didn't put up a pick but generally one end will be within specific tolerance and the other end will be just past that. So if you are checking a specific bore size, for example, one end inserted will tell you instantly if it is too large, while the other is set to tell if it is OK.

Thanks bmw. Actually looks like people will buy these things. That's cool too.

Since the lockdown, I’ve been working on projects in the garage since I don’t go to the few garage sales that are advertised.

Some time ago I mentioned that I picked up a jammed up SnapOn S80 with one stripped screw for $10. After drilling out the screw and opening it up, it became obvious why it was not operating properly. :)

I just finished installing the rebuild kit.

Here are my before and after pics.

Shiftless,
Looks much better. It’s good that you were able to get the repair kit.
I grabbed a batch of tools on eBay that kind of mimicked the stuff I frequently find at sales. Included was a large group of random wrenches. After eliminating the chaff, I found a few interesting wrenches including the first British “Lion Brand” wrench I’ve seen. The first two pictures are of two wrenches I couldn’t ID. I’ll post some more in their respective threads in the vintage forum.

Nice haul Don,
I bet there weren’t a lot of bidders on that lot. You probably got a good deal. Not a lot of Whitworth stuff around.

Before eBay got to be so big, I once scored 4 milk cartons full of miscellaneous tools and supplies for a very small bid, just a few bucks, because shipping was so high. The seller was only a few miles away so I merely drove 10 minutes and picked ‘em up. I re-listed 2 or 3 small specialized things of no use to me and got more than all of my money back.

Where are you guys getting this stuff there is nothing going on in my area. everything shut down.

I got that ratchet from a guy I know who found it in a scrap bin. He texted me because he knows I like tools.

One of my best vise find stories is the rusty old Reed I recovered from a neighborhood dumpster. Our postman alerted my wife to that one so when I got home I drove a few blocks, opened the dumpster doors and pulled it out.

Thanks, 3Bay,
I have a few McKaig-Hatch tools but none of them resemble those wrenches. I’m guessing that the MH was your tip-off. Have you run across others?
Actually, Mr D, I had to pay up a little more than I wanted because the lot also included this partial black oxide Walden set and a rusty S-K box plus a few more wrenches I didn’t post upthread.

Nice! What’s the story on the rusty vise?

These three vises cam with the two duplicators, a Kennedy box and a wooden top box when the shop I worked at switched buildings. The owner had also passed in that time, and the race shop went from three buildings down to 1, and the two remote gun shops (his hobby) also closed and all that equipment got shipped to us. Ray used these boxes and had some custom made tools in them. I hope he is smiling somewhere knowing that I saved all his custom tooling and didn't let it get scrapped out.

The biggest vise (select??) has a decent amount of play in the jaws and I would like to rebuild it at some point. The other two really just need a clean-up.

zack:
The smaller vise, the Eron, is actually a higher quality (Made in Japan) vise than the big one. The bad part is that the Eron is missing its jaw inserts.

AFAIK, I don’t think there’s much you can easily do to improve the sloppiness in that big vise. How would you go about achieving your goal?

Zack, Nice finds overall! The Flat vise is a mill vise and looks similar to a Bridgeport, the Enron is Japanese made, and the "Select" is most likely Asian made.

I love the oak machinist box, and what edition is the Machinery's Handbook?

Shift, often the slop is in the retainer for the main screw, take that out, maybe better captivate the main nut if its moving, will make any vise with those issues better.

When Zack said “play in the jaws” I assumed that to be side to side wobble when running in and out. Maybe he meant axial free play which can be lessened as you described. Some shims might be required.
Those Chinese vises are not precision instruments. I doubt that any amount of work would make it equal to an FPU or even a decent Wilton machinist bullet vise.

Got a 110 piece tool lot from eBay for $36.60 with the shipping. Husky stubby and regular wrenches, 2 ratcheting wrenches, t handle hex drivers, adjustable wrench, pliers and 3/8 & 1/4 ratchet. Kobalt wrenches, 3/8 ratchet, 2 sets of ignition wrenches. Two US Craftsman wrenches and a 3/8 ratchet. One pair of Tekton pliers. A Stanley adjustable wrench. Four Granco wrenches, haven't seen these before, but they are US made and seem well made. A pile of miscellaneous and no name import tools and some plumbing tools. I also picked up 4 new Husky tool bags from eBay for $35.

The sales and most stores have been shut down for the last 2 to 3 weeks here in Spokane, Washington.1507be7db77653de2c674fc06b4c8d1b.jpg1400e7687d7ed0603416032e3f49dfde.jpg23faf2dc5dbbbe99bd019588196d9d85.jpg94ff4d4be4dcbcd388796a44700243b6.jpge19166699b89f0a721ac52321aaefd1a.jpg0b5f43c3f8ac5709b3a84bfffcacd0b7.jpg7e068392ec50da25b9ff7e46a19e43b2.jpgb5e55a88bd1b7071968007be57b36378.jpg

Some more eBay finds from the last few weeks. A Irwin Borchest Handy auger bit set and Allied socket set box with a dozen wrenches. A Phillips Screw and Driver Kit wood box. An Eclipse 4S tool with the blades and several Terry's Spanners for bicycles and motorcycles. The last picture is a Dinky Moto Cart from 1950 to 1954 that has been put to use moving around a roll of Franklin halfs while I've been on conference calls.f96f8f5c1047734f3074907c9f50482a.jpgf5c001f68d08cf78102303fd1e1d3370.jpge73e2967b33269ca181cbcc828fdd433.jpg07313b17536fd1961a75f1520311c32d.jpgfbb81614580e4856efc05bd41b149519.jpg8d9f03b3f4d16bb6dfc38c894a198792.jpgceb17d343e34ee66bb022a8593cc608b.jpg38a7b05227ce9c16e4326214d12301ed.jpg94dfd1e5d80e5a7cd02a788178f3de9d.jpg

Some items I picked up at online auction. Paid 79 dollars and change for the Blue Streak and Borg Warner cabinets. More than I wanted to pay, but there was a fair amount of NOS auto parts in them that should cover the cost. Paid $3.65 for the creepers and the Marquette charger. Marquette charger works great, just needs cleaned up. Surprise at how nice is the little Craftsman creeper stool. Rolls great and well made. The Lisle creeper will just get donated.

I was in the area again, so I stopped by the estate sale I was at earlier in the week, picking up this stuff:

Proto, Duro-industro, Snap-on, Mac, Plomb (+spare puller arms) and other misc. for $7.

The reason that I was in the area, was to pick this wooden box up

A Stanley 910 from the '50s. I had been staring at it on CL for a while but the seller dropped the price by over half, so I made arrangments to pick it up. The finger joints are all separated and someone glued the back on with a hot glue gun, but wood is always repairable!
