Don--
Thanks for posting a your set! Yours is in better shape than mine--no placard, only four original HK stamped keys (including the mangled one) and no paint.

Your placard indicates nine key sizes. Did all nine come with the set? Are all of your keys stamped HK? My largest looks original but doesn't have the stamp so I doubt it is. The tools in the lid were also in the box but are unmarked except for the long silver one which is a CM -v-.

UPDATE:

After a generous contribution from d42jeep, I'm now well on my way to completing my Holo-Krome No.22 Hex Key set. I'm still missing the HK stamped 3/8, 3/16 and 3/32. Upturned placeholders shown in the photo.

Thanks Don!!

Yeah, I have more vinyl crowntop bags than I need, just so I can slowly put together full sets. See the bag, quick dump in my hand to see if at least some are -v-, and then throw away the junk ones later.

Thank you Sir!!! I was amazed when I touched it and felt wood instead of metal. It’s really lightweight and those drawers slide as good as new. Mind blown over here!!! I had a truckload of glass door ikea cabinets I had just picked up around the corner and had to do some serious rearranging to get it all in but I wasn’t leaving without it!!

Garage sales part 1.
All sockets were 50 cents each includes craftsman impacts, SR deep, a craftsman C Series (marks ground off [emoji21]), Plomb, snap on, and thorsen. All pliers and wrenches were a $1 or less except the keen mutter pipe wrench for $3.50 and buffalo 6" adj. Was $5. Ratchets are proto and an NB style can't remember the stamping, Diamond adjustable, and a SK Knurled extension.

Garage sale part 2 (stop of the week):
Stopped at this rummage that the lady said she was doing sort of an estate sale. I seen this rusty union box laying on the garage floor. Opened it up and seen one of those casted file handles and asked how much for the box. She said $5 I said sold. The file handle is worth 3X that. I didn't too much as I figured it would be a good surprise when I got home. I was looking around and noticed a tarped off section and the their was a newer Milwaukee radio and she came over and said it wasnt for sale. I told her I was more interested in the little metal storage cabinet. She pulled open the drawers chaulked full of every misc small hardware you could think of. She said how about $2 I said sold.

Getting home tonight I finally carved out some time between our backsplash tiling project to do inventory and I was pleasently survived. Along with the file handle a pair of Ford pliers, 3 Dunlap ratcheting wrenches, 2 adjustables (1 wide jaw crescent other is marked but needs to be cleaned up, perfect handle screwdriver, a bunch of brace bits that look more for metal, and with chisels (one craftsman vanadium) and files.

Also have this GM thing. Not sure if it is a small dust cover or what. Anybody recognize the era and purpose? Should ask if it is a General Motor first without assuming.IMG_20200607_193636788.jpgIMG_20200607_194548799.jpegIMG_20200607_194945653.jpegIMG_20200607_194949148.jpegIMG_20200607_194954325.jpeg

I checked to see if the Tahoe flea market was open and found out that it is closed for good. Kinda sad for me. It had been going for 40 years.

Sorry to hear that for you Don. Seems like you usually had some pretty good hauls from there. :0(

First real sale I’ve been to in a while.

A SO two drawer tool box with flip down front cover, with a good assortment of taps, dies, drill bits and some measuring tools.

I think that SO box is a K21 MechaniKit. 8-3/4x21“?
Is it OD inside? Or is that a trick of the light?
I’m a little rusty on things SO, but I think an oval decal indicates 1930s; triangular decal indicates 1940s. I don’t see it where I expect it, centered above the top drawer.

I think your right on a K-21, Three bay thought so too. A little searching seems to confirm. It has heavy paint, so hard to see if anything is underneath it.

When you say OD inside, what do you mean?
Thanks

This has me a bit lost for the proper Mod # for mine, and we went though this years back when I got it. KR-21 was what I put on my inventory (which I use all the time for reference) at that time I date ranged it to 34-38? But mine is not red and never was, has the leather handle, so I guess its also a K-21. I can't get to it to verify anything else (Like slides)

Nine, looks like it will clean up fine, and new felt if needed should be easy.
IS it a billiards table, then? This is my first time seeing one naked, with no makeup, and upside-down? I couldn’t even convince myself it was made of wood. The legs, yes, but the top...it’s upside-down, right? No pockets, or is that what the built-up periphery inside the aprons is - tracks? I still can’t picture it, and no sense of scale.

LS--You need to treat yourself to a trip to Vegas, or at least watch some old James Bond movies!

Found this Coleman stove and lantern on the side of the road for trash day. I also found a lawnmower but the owner removed the wheels and cut the cables before removing the handle. Then just set the deck/motor out for trash without the gas cap on the tank. Can't figure out why they did it but the motor is a 2015 model so the block could be good for a swap on a bad motor mower in the future.

Ha ha. It’s true: I’ve had a lifelong aversion to casinos, Royale or otherwise. A residual strand of Calvinist DNA, LOL.

All the discussion of K- and KR- boxes got me motivated to take another whack at my pre-war K-23. I knew it was repainted red, but it looks like it was repainted gray before that? I was scrubbing the red off the oval decal with mineral spirits and paper towels with some success. When I hit gray, I figured there must not be any label left, just adhesive residue. But no - the gray started coming off, leaving a fair amount of gold!
Lucky me. I never expected to see so much decal intact.
Any advice about the the rest of the box? I am split about stripping to bare metal or just scuffing up what’s left of the red. I intend to spray it gray. The original idea with the mineral spirits was to swab the grease and grit out of the corners and seams.

Just got this toolbox off marketplace, with some various stuff inside. Guessing the box is military? Crinkle finish, metal handle on top, thin side handle on each side, outside faded but inside is deep forest green. Any ideas from our militaria guys?IMG_20200609_100947.jpegIMG_20200609_101005.jpgIMG_20200609_100955.jpgIMG_20200609_101025.jpg

That is without a shred of doubt an armorer's machinists' chest for small arms repair made by Art Steel Company (ASCO) in New York. I have one that is identical except for mine having a leather handle, which is wartime. The wartime FSN is 41-K-8425. Yours could be late war, because there is some evidence of chests going to metal handles before they went there full-blown postwar, but probably postwar. You can see mine in post #8545 in the main 'Vintage Toolboxes of GJ' thread. And if you scroll down to post #8554, I also posted the photo-documenting of a 1951 NOS ASCO box being removed from its straw lined slat wood crate. Identical to yours. EDIT: Page 428.

I ordered a few tools off of ebay. I felt it was a good deal from one seller who let me negotiate prices down. One part was 3/8" Craftsman -V- deep 7 socket set 1/2" - 7/8" good condition for $20. I see alot of talk about ebay being crazy prices, and I agree it is sometimes but I think there are deals to be had too.

Is $20 a good price for this set?

Well what arrived were not -V-. They are upside down G and G1. Different era, different manufacturer, not what I was looking for. I emailed the seller, he apologized for his error, refunded my socket money, and said keep the sockets. Not the -V- I was looking for but they are still USA made. Thank you :)

$20 would be a decent price, figure just over 2.50 a socket. The benefit to ebay is instant gratification, hit buy and get it right away, vs searching yardsales to either piece together a set or get lucky and find a box.

I have one too, and I IDd it based on Lugz' post a while back. Mine was repainted in stealth colors, so no one noticed it. Still working on creating a front cover for mine.

Thanks Cruzan. I find as long as it's USA made a good condition 3/8 Craftsman socket set ships 20-35 deep or standard, 7-10 pieces. Maybe most people don't care about the series as long as it's USA. Impacts however are more expensive. I ended up getting them for free, I am not complaining!

LS, I would keep working on it with the mineral spirits. It will take a while, but it will come out better than any other method. I have a Snap-on box that someone painted red and I know it is grey underneath, but seeing the label there puts it up on my list of projects. (That along with getting the paint off of the wood trim in my house...
