Lugz- what does the military community value a spinner like that ?
I'm not sure. They're not unicorn rare. But they are a little harder to find than just uncommon. And most of the Carter kits that show up don't include them because they've long ago been pilfered, as I said, and as Brian's story illustrates. So, pricing out loud, probably not a $50 type item, but not $15, either. I don't think I would let mine go for less than $35 unless I knew the buyer personally.

Aaarhh... I found one of those Carter spinners in a junk shop in Sacramento about 10 years ago, but although it looked handy, I thought it was priced high at $5. And so I passed.

ETA I am always amazed at people trying to sell a toolbox, full of tools, for several grand. Trying to get people to cough up that kind of cash for what is going to be a mixed lot of good and bad is difficult enough, but for some reason they never seem to want to negotiate or piece it out, which would net them that amount. There is a MAC box that has been on eBay for several years like that. 4K he wants. Well, maybe he will get lucky and find someone.

They’re cool but not exactly rare. I’d agree, harder to find. Far from common like a Craftsman 1/4 spinner handle, but not uncommon in the online world.

A quick look at past ebay sales is all over the board. From $7 + shipping with 3 sockets and $35 shipped with 4 sockets, to the tool alone $12+ shipping, 22 shipped and 12 + shipping.

Whatever someone will pay.

In my opinion, Craftsman crank spinner ratchets aren’t rare. I’ve never found one in the wild YET, but typically there are a few available for sale on Ebay every single day of the year. That is not rare.

Last week I drove out to a tool-rich estate sale with a large, dilapidated, multi-bay wooden shed complete with early/mid-century metal lathe and milling machine. I had my sights on two Baldor long-arm buffers and a Wilton bullet vise. Even though I was at the tail end of the first group, the Baldors were sold by the time I entered the shed. Luckily for me, the Wilton had been shunted off to the back of one of the work benches and I had to ask two different estate agents where it was located. Much of the shop had at least a decade of grit and dust covering it—as did the Wilton—and the vice blended into the brown background. After ensuring it was sound, I bought it for $90.

With the feeding frenzy in full swing, I found a POS Craftsman tool box with about a 50/50 ratio of interesting tools to ****. Not wanting to take the time to dig through the **** for the nuggets, I decided the $12 sticker price was fair for the entire contents. I applied the same reasoning to a cheap $4 green plastic tool box with about 30-40 wrenches—DOEs, DBEs and Combos of various makers—hauled it off to the hold table and dove back into the fray.

When I emerged with my final trophies, a ½” rail of mixed sockets—$8, a Wright Tools partial socket set—$5 and a New Britain S-35 Ratchet—$4, I found that one of the agents had priced out my $4 box of wrenches at $120! What do you mean the box is $4 and the wrenches are $3 each—sputter, sputter!! I decided at that point I had better go through the box to see what I really wanted! I’m glad I did because well over half of the wrenches were from off shore. I kept the 13 CM -v- metrics, the Plomb pebble, and the three Williams Superrenches. After some negotiations, we settled on $22.

Highlights from the $12 tool box include:

Plomb ½” Swivel Socket with one down arrow and one up arrow

Proto Challenger 1670 Breaker Bar

Proto Professional 706-SL 6” Adjustable

Champion DeArment 420 Channel locks

Two Stanley Wood Chisels

CM 6pt Metric Socket Set with carrier –v-

CM Torx Socket Set -G-

CM 3/8 Flex Head Ratchet and Flex Handle

RIMAC 116 pry bar

OR Nice get on the Wilton for $90. Suckage worthy IMO. It cleaned up real nice. What size are the jaws?

Thanks! I posted that info on the vise thread but failed to do so here.
Pertinent info and flip side shots transcribed from the vise thread:

After clean up it appears to have 80-85% original paint so I will keep it that way. This is my first bullet--not counting a Cadet--and I'm having trouble determining what model it is. S2 is forged into the dynamic but I cannot find any reference to that as a model number. It has 3.5 inch jaws, opens 6 inches and weighs 40 pounds.

More great stuff, guys. I never knew carb-specific tool kits existed.

Nice Wilton bullet, too.

There's irony in the story I'm about share, that relates to this.

A co-worker approached me a few weeks ago, inquiring if I was interested in his father-in-law's old tool box full of vintage tools. Along with the tools, the FIL had taken the time to write out an estimate of all the tools based on the highest prices he could find on eBay. Unfortunately, we couldn't make a deal at his estimated price of more than $1000. But I did notice something unusual, that I hadn't come across before. It was a steel Carter 3/8" drive spinner and assorted Carter screwdriver sockets. I took photos just for kicks.

Perhaps I should go back and work out a deal?

The Proto LA 9989 tool chest is mint, btw.

Brian
Very cool to at least see it. There is a few stores that sell tools that I go to just window shop.
I have not yet been fortunate enough to run into a partial kit in the wild, but I have found the highly coveted all-steel spinner (T-109-51), which is almost always missing from the kits. :)
Very nice. I found 2 of them a week apart and haven't seen any since in the 10 years on the hunt. One was unmarked and the other was similar to yours.

Looking for a Round Beam Plomb 1068 Double Box End Wrench

Those eBay prices are much better than The Carburetor Shop, http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Carter_tools.htm where they want $50 for the spinner and $40 each for the screwdriver sockets!
Is there one on eBay now? That's the difference between waiting for one and wanting one now. And despite its seemingly overwhelming presence, some guys still just don't like dealing with eBay. But, a good conversation (Pricing is one of the things we talk least about on GJ...), and ground truth for targeted hand selling (meaning, somewhere online like G503.com, or an MVPA swap meet, etc) is probably somewhere in between $12 and $50. Or $35, like I said!

Lugz, there was when you asked the question. Cost $10 BIN plus the ride. Should be here next week.

These last two weekends were pretty busy & I haven't had time to sort & clean.
Here are 3 highlights.
I stopped at a garage sale that was mostly Longaberger baskets & yard tools.
An old fella was sitting behind the table in front of an old Mac box. I asked him if he had any mechanics tools He would consider selling. He said no, but he had a vise of his late brothers he would sell for $40.00
So I am not a vise guy, but for 40 bucks this Columbian seemed a no brainer.

Second story;
Stopped at a yard sale with 2 old ladies. Everything was dirty & overpriced.
(for instance a small electric ceramic heater was priced $20.00
"Waste of time", I thought.
Looked in 2 small tubs that were marked 50 cents.
Saw a red Williams roll. Held it up to the lady. Is this 50 cents? Yes it is.....
It had a missing wrench. Looked in the next tub.. there was the missing wrench for another 50 cents.
I have spent a half hour cleaning these up & oiling them, but not a bad deal for an old rollup Williams set of wrenches.

Story #3
Stopped at a house w/2 Chinese ladys selling mostly kids clothes.
I could barely understand them.
Saw some tools inside, & saw sockets & ratchets in a pile, mostly newer Craftsman.
How much for these"
"My husband say hundred dollar....."
I almost walked, then noticed the 1/4 Snap-on ratchet & extension,
"I will give you 20 dollars just for these two little ones" I say.
She thought I was foolish.
I was more than happy with a 1998 TM830

Nice garage sale experiences. 3 good deals. You **** pricing for the Vise. Can't go wrong with a USA swivel ductile vise! Sounds like you could have bought the snapon pair for $10 :)

Electro Voice speakers, apparently designed by Klipsch from a local auction $100 for the pair. Any audiophiles here? Probably the best deal of the day

Parker 5" with swivel jaw fixed base $75

Ridgid Pipe Cutter 0 to 2", probably my fourth, I didn't want to buy it but when I said it was a nice pipe cutter to the guy at the yard sale, he responded "a dollar" I couldn't help myself. Damn junk gene. There's lots more, I am way behind but I can barely keep my eyes open

A visit to another Habitat yielded some neat finds. I haven’t been there in months, and it turned out to be my lucky day. They were offering a whopping 40% off tools.

PMan you ****...

The EV's are unlikely to be Klipsh. Two separate companies. EV made great stuff!

That ships wheel had a line wound around it several times then each end went to the tiller via at least 4 pulleys to keep it to the sides of the boat. Winding the wheel moved the tiller and steered the boat.

Thanks Outlaw! I keep reading the EV's are a Klipsch design. Corner speakers

Welcome to OCTOBER! This used to be the eighth month of the year, before the Republic of Rome began worshipping Julius C, and later Augustus C.
September (yeah, it used to be lucky #7) WAS lucky for a lot of our threadsters, which will make my monthly tally grander than most so far this year.
So consider this post (for Seven...oh, wait: I’m still working on it, and a decent pun) reserved for the run-down.

And Here It Is:
1st place with a DOZEN “*****” jrg
2nd place (tied) with eight each bmwrd0 & b.well
3rd place with seven Outlawmws
4th place (tied) with six each pelletman & BlueBomber
5th place (tied) with five each r_olson_06 & Rory Bellows
6th place (tied) with four each freudianfloyd, Cruzan80 & 3jakes

I want to restate that my methodology and accounting are far from infallible. I have no doubt errors and ellisions creep in. September was particularly fraught with multiple *****, group *****, nondirected and (possibly) misdirected *****.
So to conclude, the following members received at least one ****, and not more than three, landing them all in
7th place by my reckoning:

Pelletman--You really did find a gold mine--and you **** for it!!

There apparently was some kind of relationship between Klipsch & EV, but as Outlaw stated, they're two separate companies. Klipsch is made in Hope, Arkansas.

Part 1

Back to my honey hole to pick up some more junk today

Kennedy Box $20

Socket sets $10 each

Dayton belt grinder $20

Wrenches I'd say free, what are they?

Little green toolbox with some radio controlled plane engines $20

Honey Hole it is, no doubt. For me the box, socket sets and grinder are the big U **** items!

pelletman You surely **** on those socket sets for $10 each! That 3/4" Craftsman set might be the same one I have. I think I'm missing a socket or two so I'd be interested to know what sockets are in that set if/when you have the time.

wrenchguy (REALLY - is that an error?)
Since you're being quotidian, and I don't use the term you're counting as a laudatory, you're in error by at least one (1)! But I don't care if Mike (wrenchguy) has 1 or a 101 "*****", if you plan on following precedence and putting POY up for a vote at the end of the year in a poll among some top pickers that you nominate (apparently strictly quantitatively?), I am casting my ballot now (early mail in!) for wrenchguy! Because if someone comes along and finds something cooler than that antique hardware store carousel between now and NYE, I am just giving up! :)

I had a "Gun to my head" sort of flea market haul (Lugz 2020_42) this morning...

...because I'd have a hard time picking my favorite item between the WWII BG-169 radio bag (even though it has a Signal Corps designator, and they were used to hold the SCR-538 radio in the White Scout Car, it has a Navy contract number, so I think this one was shipboard, probably in the bridge), the near-complete Hinsdale TL No.20 set, the Shelton ratcheting bit set, complete, with paperwork, and the Schollhorn sapper tool - even with a gun to my head.

Some of the others - the Bonney N.A.F. DOE wrench, the little Coes monkey wrench with an interesting marking on the flip side, and the Blackhawk putty knife - ain't too shabby in my own book, either. The slip-joints are J.P. Danielson, but thin-nose, which I have never personally seen in the wild before, and I think that Williams spark plug wrench (combo offset) might be one that wrenchguy needs for his Giant Wrench Board, maybe.

I hear you, Lugz.
...ARE we experiecing mission drift? Is it (partly, at least) my fault?...
My monthly summary is intended for entertainment purposes only, etc. It’s not even a highlights reel, really. More like a “let’s...make...Some...NOISE!” contest.
As was pointed out last month, the POY is not determined by ****-count, though that is, doubtless, one influence.

Hey, all: just a reminder that in our illustrious thread host's opening post, suction designations are only one factor to be considered.

"As inaugurated by Private Lugnutz and confirmed by BlueBomber, there will be a PICKER-OF-THE-YEAR trophy awarded at the end of the year. I will nominate 10 candidates with 20 or more posts on this thread who, in my estimation, exemplify the high standards of economy, quality, esprit-de-corps, perspicacity…(AKA “best year of finds”). GJers will then vote to choose the winner."

Also, remember this is all in good fun...:bounce:

Members should review the thread and form their own opinion of the year’s coolest picks (not necessarily the coolest single object), most numerous picks, most helpful commentaries, most entertaining stories...as will - gulp - I. (Definitely something I will use a desktop for - 99.9% of my GJ doings are done on my phone.)
When the nominees list is posted, I hope it will seem reasonable - neither arbitrary nor predetermined.
And if it does generate controversy, well, that’s entertaining too, isn’t it? In any case, you all have my word, at the end of December, there will be a peaceful transfer of Host.

Not at all! All in good fun! I was just doing a little campaigning for Mike. And I'm glad you picked on the allusion and ran with it...

Alot of oratory and hiflewlutin language i don't understand going on here.:lol_hitti
I don't i deserve any "low pressures". Low pressures in my opinion relate to price. I didn't state price paid.
I believe one sometimes has to go balls out. Lifeis short and i seen 1 b4, kinda knew alittle
about them.
thanks for 7th place mention.
