Here's that toy soldier from yesterday. There's a saying in here somewhere. 'Old soldiers never die, they just...lose the top of their helmet, some paint, and half a rifle barrel, and end up in my knick-knack display case infirmary.' :) Or something like that.

Today's small haul (Lugz 2020_56) from the flea.

The multi-tool is not branded.

By now everyone who collects wartime GMTK tools will recognize the "-D-I-" sockets. One of them is a not-so-easy to find 25/32". (One of these days I gotta put some partial sets together from my orphan stash and move them...)

I don't know what the tool with the jaws, spring, and long handle is. Made by K-D. No registered TM mark, and PAT PEND, so older like I like 'em. But I honestly can't figure it out. Spreader or lifter or clamp or something. Missing a nut of some kind I think.

The longer DOE is a Jaguar wrench. The shorter one is not branded, but marked "HI-TENSILE" (a wartime Armstrong tell) and has Across-the-Flats "WHIT." sizing.

Eagle pocket clip circuit tester. My second. I love the art deco styling.

The tool with the jaws is used to grasp a inside of a bake caliper piston to remove it, it's complete,I have one in my box although newer.

Is it antique or modern?
Modern. I watched the bird dive from a low perch on a squirrel outside the back gate at Ft Monmouth about ten or so years ago and promptly get pummeled by an oxy-acetylene tank trunk coming the other way. I went back for it, took it to the side of the road and knelt there with it as it died. Put it in the trunk and called the Raptor Center. I know the guy. I've taken them red tails and all kinds of owls, some of them alive, some not, for study/research purposes. (I hit a saw-whet owl once at 4AM and, while I don't well up too often in life, that one got me. They are rare, cool, tiny owls and I was more or less just exasperated that modern life puts us in those unfortunate moments. I'm no softie or vegan etc and I hunt but there's a difference if you know what I mean. He or she was just doing her thing not expecting a mass of metal at 45mph.) He didn't need it, but he reported it, so I wouldn't get fined or arrested for harvesting the parts. Not that a guy like me is who they're really after. I used one for an award I made for a long time friend and colleague when he retired. We are both 'Old Crows' (Army EW) and you see lots of little wood-mounted awards with plaques adorned with a foot and talons in that community. I kept this one. Had to put them in a bucket of sand in open position to stay like this. They are normally closed and will trigger when the pads hit the prey.

Right now it's not moving, and the threaded pin in the dynamic jaw and the spring seem to be illogically counter-posed for movement, to me), but hold your horses, and when I post it on the K-D thread, if I haven't figured it out myself by then, explain it over there.

Sad story about the birds. I don’t like to see animals suffer and get hurt. I am glad at least some good was able to come out of it

Farm sale in New Jersey a couple weeks ago. Greenerd No. 1 arbor press, Eagle 66 oiler, some nice wire rope angle grinder wheels USA, a sheet metal straightener, hammer, and a brush. $20 for all.

I picked up my first Wilton 2" baby bullet a few months back. Last week I was able to snag a Wilton PowrArm Junior off the big auction site for what I thought was a very reasonable price. Same ebay seller had one go an hour earlier for over $250 before shipping. I got this one for about 20% of that before shipping. Both were advertised as stuck. I took a chance that it was indeed fixable. It arrived today. Despite the horrible black paint job it is in great shape looking at it from the outside. I've already posted a thread seeking help on breaking it down to "restore".

It goes inside of the bore of the caliper piston and expands outward, twist and pull, obviously won't work for most modern calipers, mine0efa651f1c4539e61c62b3cd95496275.jpg
Can’t read the #’s in other pic I took, I can get it tomorrow.
No luck finding the “K-D” thread.

Yes, I figured it out. That threaded pin was throwing me off. As soon as I pried it open, it was obvious.

Did you use the Index in the Sticky? It's in the Index.

I'd have to find the sticky first, maybe I'm dumb or tired or a combo, LOL.

So this year has been dry and slow for a lot of reasons. Yesterday, a neighbor asked if I could look at a couple of things at her Moms house. Turns out it was a couple of simple adjustments so I told them no charge, you are my neighbors. Mom asked if I needed any tools. If you do, help yourself to what is in the back room, we need to clean it out. I picked a few things and she said "is that all you want"? Back I went. Real pleased to have brought home the following...They offered to pay me as well and I said the tools were all I needed, so I guess that is a barter.

I'd say it wasn't barter. It was karma! Good on you paying it forward JABgj!

We are in the General Discussion board. The Vintage Tool Discussion board is below the Fabrication board. The Sticky I am referring to is at the top of the Vintage Tool Discussion board. Click on the Sticky and scroll down to the Index, a list of threads by topic in alphabetical order.

Sorry about that. That's where I primarily hang out here on GJ. I always forget the Garage Sale thread is up here in the General Discussion board. I get to it in my subscriptions. It's the only thread I regularly read or contribute to up here in the land of modern tools, endless Snap-on vs. HF fights, anti-tool polisher rants, and 'I've forgotten more than you know about cars' ******* contests.:)

There is a youtube video on someone taking apart a PowerArm 343. Starts around the 2min15 second area and probably only last less than 10 minutes. His ended up having a missing set screw on side, but yours probably will be there.

Here is link:

Hope this helps.

Thanks. Yes. They are marked 'M. KLEIN CHICAGO' in an inset on the inside grip. I posted more photos of them and that marking on the 'Long C' thread the same day I found them. On the vintage board.

My routine MO is to post a photo of my entire flea haul here, with a cursory inventory and description, then I clean them, and do research if necessary, and then I post more photos and a more elaborate description with detailed pertinent information on threads dedicated to the item by topic, either by type (e.g., 'Show your DOE wrenches') or by OEM (e.g., 'Show your Plomb tools') on the vintage board. So, Garage Sale thread as introductory clearinghouse, so to speak. Unless there is no specific thread. Or it's a jerry can. (Snerk.) Then I might post more here.

Speaking of jerries... Yes, it is possible. I will have to take a better look at the features. Because I don't want no stinkin' Krauts in my display case! KIDDING. It's actually funny you should say that, because I just spotted a complete set of Austro-German Alpine Troops in the original cardboard box yesterday. Guy wanted $65, which was too steep for me. Besides the price, it would be treacherous to allow a whole squad of healthy fully-armed enemy troops in my infirmary. :)

Yes, that is a J.P. Danielson BET'R GRIP adjustable wrench in this bucket, but sometimes you just gotta say NO.

In the same category of showing my restraint was this faux-wood finish toolbox. I was surprised it had a nice script Herbrand on the handle. I can't even imagine what one would put in here. It is made of tin and plastic. Toy tools? Or was there really a time (60's?) when they sold these meant for actual tools?

Finally, a quick funny story. This is the way things go around here sometimes. I saw this box on Thursday. Homemade I think, but I kinda liked the look.

'How much?' I ask the vendor. 'Oh, sorry, that's sold,' he replied. 'Dang,' I said. 'How much did you sell it for if you don't mind me asking?' '$15' he said.

On Friday I saw it again at a different flea market being sold by a well-known antiques guy in these parts. 'How much?' I asked. 'It's yours for $40,' he said. I guess that's the mark-up for putting it in your van, driving it across the state, and pulling it out of your van the next day!

I hear you, Lugz! I bought mine for $5 for the contents. I'm surprised it has held up. Mine didn't have the plastic strap handle to ID it--that much had already failed and been replaced with a galvanized gate handle!

Thanks Mike. Yeah, I saw that video. It was helpful. I broke mine down last night and soaked a couple of the slightly rusty parts in evaporust. Already cleaned them up today. Having trouble getting the cap screw unscrewed from the steel ball. And need to remove the hideous black paint from the aluminum parts.

This morning I had a little extra time, so broke one of my rules and went to the first day of an estate sale. There was only one thing I was interested in but though I arrived 45 minutes before opening, I was 30th in line. It took half an hour after the first people went in before I could, and to my great surprise the object of my desire was still there!
I collared one of the sale operators and pointed out, "Since you didn't get your asking price for that vise in the first five minutes, you ain't gonna." He agreed that was likely true, so I hit him with an offer of just a bit over half the asking. And, obviously...
My biggest vise yet! 4 1/2" and 56 lbs. The swivel jaw is mostly free - it moves with a tap of a rawhide mallet. The original pin is missing, and the shoulder bolt has bodged threads so it's scrap. I can turn a replica pin easily enough, but does anyone know the angle of the taper? I can't think of a good way to measure it.
4247 is hand-stamped on the static jaw right behind where the pivoting jaw ends. Could this be a date stamp? 42nd week of 1947? Maybe April 2, 1947?

...and thanks, just thanks a heap for getting me hooked on vises!!

Haha.

It’s from the line of cheap import junk and generic ratchets. Socket boxes also came with the woody paneling.
I have one! I don't even remember what was in it, but I bought it with the contents. I think it may have been you who identified as Herbie now that I think about. It's not as flimsy as the bigger brother. See pic. Too funny.

Never say No!
I have too many things going in the scrap bin lately because I thought I could save them, Roy. If I needed one, maybe different. But I have a few JPD 12-inchers already.

We were "curbside shopping" locally on a Saturday and saw a orange plastic artists cabinet at the curb. We circled back for it later and it was gone.

The next day we go to Columbus and that very same orange artists cabinet is for sale in a booth. I asked the guy where he got it from and he said he bought it from a picker he gets stuff from that morning.

Cheers

That is retail in a nutshell. Getting the stuff to market for the right buyer is everything.

Haha.

I have one! I don't even remember what was in it, but I bought it with the contents. I think it may have been you who identified as Herbie now that I think about. It's not as flimsy as the bigger brother. See pic. Too funny.

I have too many things going in the scrap bin lately because I thought I could save them, Roy. If I needed one, maybe different. But I have a few JPD 12-inchers already.
No worries and I agree. Can't take on too much or nothing gets done.

While this is probably my favorite thread on here, I haven't bought anything or had much time to post in awhile but did that change today. I picked up this 11 year old Grizzly band saw, two new blades, mobile base, and the riser ket to extend its capacity for $150. Machine will need new tires, but other than its great. Machine has been used very little, I mean it looks like maybe an hour or two on it. He said the base didn't have work, but once I got it home I found the casters and wheels where bolted up diagnal to one another so one wheel was going against the others. A few bolts later and she roles around great. 20201121_144600.jpg

Funny, Jim. I saw the chest at Columbus on Thursday, and then Collingwood on Friday. I like the seller, a flooring guy for his day job, and a terrific acoustic guitar player, so I didn't sour the air by revealing that I knew what he paid for it.

True that. And his price is right - for someone who doesn't know he paid $15! :)

Even at that price, it’s not a bad deal. Today junk costs more than that and isn’t as cool!

Very slow weekend for sales with tools. We started in Concord, CA with two sales and struck out. There was a tool sale listed in Brentwood, CA and we got there an hour before it closed and picked up a few interesting items. My wife searched through the screwdrivers and picked out some unique items including my second Winchester screwdriver and my first speeder one. The speeder looks Xcelite but I couldn’t find any markings.

Oh, the price is definitely decent. In other circumstances, I could probably get him down to $30. The point is the principle. I was 10 minutes too late. Now that I know what he paid, I don't want to pay more.
