What siding design we are going with. I love it, especially that the wood wraps around to the other side. and the contrast between wood and metal. I believe we are doing a rainscreen set up for the wood siding, not exactly sure how they mount the corrugated metal.

electrical plan. A few things still need to be added to this.

All windows are in. Finishing the roof is next I think, then finishing making it fully enclosed.

Here's a little update. I've been out of town for the last month with work, so I haven't had any updates in a while.

Metal roof is done, a lot of electrical has been put in as well as some lights. The water heater is ready to be installed. The metal siding is waiting to be installed. All windows are in. We are waiting for the doors to arrive. Insulation in ceiling and walls will be done soon.

Here's one picture.

I'll update again soon with more detailed information.

Hey Curt,

I'm very impressed with your photography. Can you help us out and post what type of camera, etc you use? I know it has more to do with your skill and knowledge of your equipmet... but I'd love to know what you use to get that quality.

Thanks!

did you use sketch up for the floor plan too?

Like others have said, fabulous design. Simple lines really let the proportions and design shine through.

on the front page of the site, very nice! i like the design of the shop. my wife likes the contemporary style of the building, and i agree. she is more accepting of the shop idea if it looks like that. so many shops in the backyard just look like warehouses, killing the look of the yard. nicely done, looking forward to seeing it finished.

I'm a VW guy too. Just sold my 68k mile '66 fasty due to needing the room for the build. Looking forward to watching your project progress. Especially curious to see your ideas on lift placement, workbench and storage ideas. Keep up the good work!

Garage looks awesome so far. A quick question I had is if you have any idea why there are 2 layers of tyvek? The sheeting is in a tyvek sandwich. Rainscreen is definitely the way to go for that region.

Curt-

I'm subscribed, too! And not too far away either - I'm in Seattle, near 125th & 12 Ave NW - with the same kind and size trees...

Great looking project!

I use a Nikon D80.
Lenses:
Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6
Nikkor 18-200mm VR

and for the lighting, I use a Canon 380ex speedlite. Hand held, but it also syncs with my camera, kind of funny since it's a canon.

I've had the D80 for for around 4 years, i'm thinking of upgrading to a d90 pretty soon here. I use photoshop CS to edit some of the shots, but most of the ones I post in this thread are straight from the camera, no editing.

Good! I love my VWs, glad there are quite a bit of vw people on here. The squarebacks will be the first big projects in the shop. I'm very excited to work on them in there.

Yes, sketch up was used. :)

Yeah, my dad and I wanted a shop that looked classy and it is turning out very nice. It is costing more than just a warehouse lookalike, but it is worth it.

:( That was a beauty. But you'll be able to find another when you are done with your build. The cool thing about type 3's are that they are rare, but also easy to find if you know where to look. I will keep this thread updated with what we do, thanks for the interest!
Pic of the squarebacks. the white one is the new project to work on when the shop is finished.

I noticed that, but don't know why they did that. Rainscreen is the way to go, I'll have to ask the builders what the plan is for that region.

Awesome looking build. One question, though. How tall are the back walls compared to the front walls? Looks like a lift might not get very tall with a longer vehicle (say you take an interest in a mid 60's impala, for instance). Any concerns there?

Absolutely beautiful design. Reminds me of mine, a little. I did the corrugated siding on part of mine, too.

Love the siding idea will look very nice. I had thought about old barn siding with galv siding, but wondering if you had a different source for your wood. Anyway I will look forward to seein' this thing completed.

I'm pretty sure the back walls are 9' high, and the taller wall is 15'
No concerns for us, we don't foresee owning a larger car like that. Even if we did get something larger, we could still go up a few feet with it and it would be a luxury compared to not having a lift at all if that makes any sense.

Thank you, do you have a link to yours?

Old barn siding would look slick. I always like seeing old wood get reused on new buildings. I don't know where our builders got our wood, but we are using Ipe.

VERY nice garage, .... VERY VERY nice photography !!!

Well done !!
Thank you very much sir!

Just found this thread via the 'Best of 2010' thread.A well deserved mention.
Nice job Curt!

This is great, if my place hadn't come with a shop this would be the direction I'd go. architecturally.
You could always refinish the exterior of the shop to something similar to what we are doing. I love the MGB GT in your avatar, is it yours? Great colors.

yes, 2x12's. They are at least 24' in length, add a bit more because of the sloped roof. I never measured the exact length before they were put up.
And they are spaced 16" apart.

Wow Curt. That's a beautiful project you've got going. I saw it on the front page, can't believe I missed it back in Sept.

We've been working on a very similar garage. Shed roof, 2x12 rafters, quirky siding...

I've got a full thread going here:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73263

Hasn't been updated in a while (hard to make progress with the snow and cold) but projects like this make me want to get back to it...

I have a standard lowish-pitch metal pole building. It's not offensive but it's unremarkable. And I've blown my building budget for the year inside, and I'm not done yet.

The GT is mine, last winter's project. Got an offer which is borderline "hm" territory and the money would help patch that blown budget, so it might go away soon. Not sure. I have plenty of old British stuff to keep me occupied.

Not a lot of progress in the last week. A guy has been coming out every day and working on the plumbing for the floor. The water heater is installed. Other random things like the fan housing for the fan in the bathroom is installed, and wiring to a motion sensor flood light out front.
The wiring has been approved for now, and we only have one final inspection when the building is finished. I should have a bigger update soon...

Thanks man! The funny thing is, I have read through your whole thread multiple times. I love what you have done with it, and one of the reasons we went with the siding we did was from looking at your siding.
I hope you continue with the build whenever you can, it is going to turn out great.

In the long run, that might be the smart way to go. You could always buy another one down the road, the cool thing about those cars are they are rare, but still available for decent prices.

great looking space love the dubs i own a vw custom shop in nh

What is the name of your shop? There are some cool cars coming out of the northeast.
