Minor project of adding a shelf to the yard shed to take advantage of the gained space with the mower change

20221016_141308.jpg

20221016_141848.jpg

I will end up adding an aluminum angle on the front to minimize deflection and a shelf bracket support underneath as well as its a 64" span across the front and want to maintain as much height as I can so no 2x4 underneath. Once the snowblower comes off the top shelf and moves into the garage, the generator will move out here as well

Today's theme was apparently shelving as with the sawhorses and the tracksaw out I started cutting up one of the desktops for some shelving...kids waking up got in the way of finishing but hopefully can finish the cutting tonight after the Chiefs beat the Bills :)

In signs of true adulthood....an exciting Friday night here involved eating out with both kids for the first time in a long time then after getting them put to bed moving furniture and pulling out the carpet cleaner as we prepare to dedicate a space to the kids as a play area instead of all the toys strewn about the living room. now they'll be strewn about an area 2x as large....progress right?

I want to do this, too. Waiting until my boy gets a little older, but hoping to do a dedicated play area as part of a basement remodel. Only trouble is I don't really the room for it now that I use our basement bedroom as my work from home office. I'm also instituting a "one in one out" toy policy with my daughter. The amount of kid stuff we've accumulated in the past 4 yrs is suffocating.

Lots of good stuff to comment on. The drill press is awesome! And nice score on the cubicle plywood. That looks like really nice stuff. Speaking of kid playrooms... maybe it would make a nice surface for a play table that can take some abuse?

I like the 3d printing station, too. I'd like to do something like that in our laundry room. It's on my office desk right now and it's another thing that attracts junk around it.

The drone looks fun!

I feel this...nearly got in a fight with the father in law as he was over last weekend and mocked us a bit for how many toys the kids have and asked when we would stop buying them. I was impressed with my wife that she didn't launch into him but fairly politely reminded him that the vast majority of those toys were from HIM and their ridiculous Christmas activities we've been trying to scale back for years....still don't think he understood

Pretty happy with the drill press so far...some more work to get everything mounted again then need to figure out where it lives but looking forward to getting it in usage and the Walker-Turner on the market! And a kids playroom table is on the list for uses for that plywood, we've got a roughly 36" square one right now in their play area the 4 year old uses a lot....for now it's big enough but soon may need one bigger for both to sit at. Until then I'm trying to figure out where I'm gonna squirrel away the material so it's out of the way!

I like the 3d printing station, too. I'd like to do something like that in our laundry room. It's on my office desk right now and it's another thing that attracts junk around it.
I'm very fortunate we have more space than we really need and am working both to get better at utilizing it and throwing out stuff we don't need anymore....not sure which of those is harder to accomplish. Seems like for every bag of stuff that goes out another comes in!

The drone looks fun!

I'd never played with one till my brother brought this one up....we are very adept at spending each other's money. Though he just shared some of the images he's taken with his upgraded one....and dang. He's also a hobby photographer at times so has a much better eye for composition but some impressive shots

He's in the process of getting this one printed and then will make a frame for it, lost some of the resolution/quality thanks to a Google Photo's upload, download then reupload here but you get the sense

In other events...thanks to @Bakafish, ordered the handful of capacitors on the stove control board from Mouser Electronics. First time ordering from them, incredibly easy to use filters and search function, ordered at 5:30 pm and it's supposed to be here 2 days later for just over 20 bucks. Limited experience but so far sure seems like the electronic component of McMaster-Carr. Even if it doesn't work to fix things, definitely going to be using them again in the future! Thanks for the recommendation and feedback sir!

Minor printing update

I had posted earlier about the bed level on the printer and the surface of it not being perfectly planar(flat). As I was in the process of moving it I wasn't going to fix it until that was done...well now that it's got a new home I completed the "Nylock" mod for a Prusa printer which is stupid cheap(requires (8) 3mm nylock nuts and patience) and pretty happy with it:

Details of the modification: https://www.reddit.com/r/prusa3d/comments/bp440f
As a refresher, here is how the bed was prior to this:

mesh.jpg

Now the printer probes the height of the bed before each print and makes a "mesh" to then adjust the Z height as it moves around, but if you've got (2) printed surfaces that need to mate that can cause gaps and issues so when possible...flat and planar is better. Same concept as "surfacing" the bed of a CNC or mill.

After the nylock mod and a bit of adjusting the height variance now looks like this:

mesh1.jpg

So variance in height went from .63mm to .08mm and the first layers look very nice. I've got a couple larger parts with mating surfaces coming that should be a better test of it but very happy with it. I may chase to see how little I can get that variance....but the built in tool to tell you how many degrees to adjust the various screws doesn't have much wiggle room left:

angle adjustment.jpg

It's pretty difficult to turn these little screws that small of an angle....but I may try one night just to see if I can :)

I need to do that mod to mine. I also need to re-grease the bearings, but man it's hard to work on a machine that is just so reliable and plain works. It's too easy to just tell myself to keep putting it off so long as it's still working haha. I've got a Revo Six hotend kit coming for my Prusa, so I suppose then will be as good of a time as any to knock it all out.

Thanks for stopping by...love seeing what you're doing with your black beauties! And yes...Mouser is now in the bookmarks bar right next to McMaster Carr for me!

love the space very fuctional.... and yet again more evidence I need a 3d printer!!!!

Thanks sir! On a bit of "get more of it working" kick right now....been in kinda an "accumulation" phase and now need to spend more effort on ease of use and making it all do what it's supposed to...be easier if I'd stop being such a tightwad and buy working stuff rather than projects...

And yes...3D printer definitely should be considered! I've made comments in the not too distant past(couple pages back I think) about recommendations on printers....they're super handy and I love being able to feel "productive" and get more accomplished with limited shop time when it can print parts overnight or while I'm at work and I can quickly assemble something.

Details on the lights starts on the post below...I had intentions of getting more lights up this fall...haven't gotten there yet....though I own most all the materials I need. There is still time though for Christmas lights...not sure will get time to get more up before Halloween. @jbrentd went down the path as well and has some details of his setup in his thread...he got done faster then I did! Biggest issue you may have is Pi availability, i bought the prebuilt units from Dr Zz's:

I haven't been following his content much this year as it's up and running, but I'm assuming it's about impossible to get Pi's right now for those prices so you'll either need to build up your own or find a controller from someone else.

The "if it ain't broke" excuse delayed me doing it for a long time so no worries! I also need to grease it and probably should've done it while the bed was off but didn't. If you've got Octoprint running on it it's very easy to do....if you don't it takes a bit more time to send manual G codes to the printer to do the z probing and get the results, but still about the cheapest mod to actually improve quality that's out there

Be careful...it's a deep, dark hole. LOL Dr Zzs site and YouTube channel is where I started. The dig-uno is what I am using and it seems to be working well. If you can find one, it's a cheap entry point to see how you like it and how far you want to go.

HA! thats @jbrentd im aware of how bad it can be....... I bit the bullet years ago on HUE products.

That said last year or so I did a real deep dive into PiDash setups was going to build one of those, and it lead down a huge rabbit hole of all the things i could build if I had ...... a 3d printer and some basic coding skills....

also damn near convinced myself to build a lighting system for the garage similar to what was in batman the dark Knight's back up bat cave with the all the light up tiles in a drop down ceiling. actually saw a video on that one of how to do it. oh the dreams......

thanks you and @loganb for the details! and for the compliments! just gotta get that 2nd gen into shape

I say, this cliffhanger is uncalled for good sir!

Well I'd love to say that the cliffhanger was the result of a flair for the overly dramatic....but as is often the case the simplest answer wins and we were tired and went to bed lol.

It did cycle 1 out of 1 time last night to 425 then again this morning to 350 and back at what seemed like an appropriate time frame(pre surgery might have taken almost an hour to get to 350 and wouldnt get to 425). I was a bit concerned upon initial bootup as it actually had more error faults but a clearing of codes then hard reset of the stove itself(seems weird to say I did a hard reset of a stove???)and it behaved as hoped.

Haven't made anything yet, but right now I'd say cautiously optimistic it may be fixed!

I understand the near conflict over kid toys. My mother in law thinks she has to bring a gift every time she visits (she only lives an hour away, so very regularly). Also, not just one, but one for each of our three kids. SO much stuff! I tell people to just give them cash if they feel compelled to give them a gift.

Nice.
Sapele?

Great eye(no surprise).

I have a good friend and coworker who has an affliction, that is well known and admitted but remains untreated. It's contagious as many on here have it to varying degrees...but it's collecting things that "maybe" useful down the road lol.

He's a woodbutcher and lumber snob and thanks to our mutual employer's usage of various wood species we often have the ability to buy excess material from runs for far less than it's firewood value. This has benefited him well as he made over 3,000 finished sq ft of sapele flooring for his last house and he had a lot of material left over....and he's added to the collection as great deals came along. The price paid for all that material is small...very small...he's of Dutch heritage and the stereotypes are true and he's not even sad about this material leaving because he knows what he paid for it lol.

Well it's now time for him to relocate for work which means massive purge as he's moving to HQ, the land of many pallets of hardwood lumber for not many dollar bills...so makes more sense to dispose of most inventory then move it.

I had taken the day off work as it was the daughters bday so we hit the zoo as a family then upon nap time starting I went down to visit him as he's only an hour away..how handy. We had been chatting about this impending purge and he offered me anything I wanted as most things I didn't take would find either a fire or landfill...so for the price of gas and labor I had whatever I wanted

So I can home with a bed load of sapele in exchange for 6 of the desktops I bought and a loose promise to haul more stuff out after this and strict instructions to not bring any trades for future trips.

20221027_211506.jpg

20221027_211502.jpg

All 6/4, most of it is 2-5/8 wide by 48 to 84" long, the shorter stuff in front is 3-5/8 wide all under 24" long, I think anything in that pile under 12" gets put in a firewood tote for the neighborhood driveway gatherings.

The best(or worst) part is this is probably only 20% of the sapele he has, and there is more maple, Douglas fir and oak...although he wants to keep most of the oak. And 1000s of feet of mixed profile pine interior trim/casing....enough material for millions of driveway fires. It's maybe for the best I don't have more space than I do...I hear this collecting affliction is contagious. A neighbor across the street who has a Sawstop is probably going down with me on Saturday for another load, if I keep him loaded up with lumber I can count on access to the saw as needed :). I'd love to take a trailer....but I don't have any place to put it

So new next project up is lumber racks on this wall...debating on vertical vs horizontal storage but think it's going to be horizontal. as I need to stay in wife's decent ish graces and that is her claimed parking stall so encroachment isn't appreciated. I may do some vertical on that left hand side by the garage door after reorganizing some of what's there right now

WoW! That deserves a you ****! For awesomeness of course. :ROFLMAO:

I would do the exact same thing. Get every piece I could and stash it everywhere. My children can have a giant bonfire when I pass on it if they don't want it.

I’m jealous of your wood, that’s an impressive score.

Seriously though, I need to build about 40 storm windows and I don’t even want to think about what it’s going to cost me.

I somehow missed the level, square, fence storage - nicely done.

I have 'scrap' materials stored all over the place - 5 gallon buckets, piles under benches, stacks in the shed. It is the bane of my space challenged world. I'll be following closely to see how you solve for X.

You cheated. We were expecting a full wood timber rack made only from timber and not glue joints allowed! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: .

Bret

Darn right I did!

Costed out doing 4x4 with counterbores at an angle and black pipe stuck in, however the lower cost and much faster execution of above won out. "Heavy Duty" shelf standards from Menards along with brackets, I used the exact same setup in my Iowa house so I knew what I was getting into

30 minutes at lunch hour got this from a pile on the ground to on the wall

I figured we could add a little comedy to Logan’s thread. Nothing more dad joke than talking about a man’s wood.

Inlaws are with us for a week or two

Mother in law walked thru the garage after we did trunk or treat at daycare tonight and said "that's some beautiful wood you got"...

It's a good thing my wife wasn't feeling well otherwise I would have had a much harder not making a "your daughter...." joke

Busy day here

Strengthened relationships with a neighbor whose just a great guy as we headed down to get another load of lumber. Doesn't hurt that the neighbor has a Sawstop and is scheduled to get his new 4' x 4' cnc on Monday :)

We loaded this one a bit better and did it so we could shut the tailgate and left the long stuff for last. Lot more shorter pieces here, also mixed in 4/4 oak, some 6/4 oak and maple and some 4/4 cherry in addition to some glued up oak blanks

20221029_121136.jpg

20221029_145123.jpg

Got the 2nd rack up...need more storage but I got a lot of it off the ground

20221029_200733.jpg

20221029_200342.jpg

Going to need to move around more stuff in this rack to get more lumber in

What's left...well plus what's left in the truck but everything there is under 36" long

While chatting with the lumber donors wife yesterday before we started loading, found there is a promised set of adirondack chairs in sapele she would love to get built but building their house took priority. Being in the middle of a move and trying to get their house project listed it's probably going to be a bit before those can be done....but I happened to have the plans for the Lee Valley folding ones as I also know something about intending to build things and not getting there yet...

20221029_214934.jpg

So out came the plans and trying to figure out the most efficient way to build them with what was just acquired. There are 3 middle school age kids....so 5 chairs it is

On a related note...if anyone is in the market for an 80% done house in small town USA(southwest Iowa about 1 hour outside of Omaha and 25 minutes east of I-29) that is literally built inside of a former peaking power generation station and has roughly 4k sq ft of space available for finishing as commercial office, meeting hosting, event space or just your shop let me know! 5 bed(could be 6) believe 5.5 bath, at least 4k sq ft in the living area, everything but the exterior walls and floor new in last several years. Think old warehouse vibe...big steel beams, partly open to the ceiling, concrete floor, tall windows(new) with a residence built inside the existing structure. Needs finishing touches...some drywall and trim, final hookups of some lights, Master bath is roughed in but not done, not many interior doors installed yet etc. Fully livable and they've lived in it the last 4 years while working on it, but they're going to get it on the market while they keep working on it to see of anyone is interested in finishing it to their own desires. Listing should be up later this week so if interested let me know

Inlaws being with us helped me immensely this weekend as it let me spend more garage time with the help on the kids.

Flat surface disease in full swing so work on the floor it is.

20221030_154517.jpg

Got some fun angles here but track saw makes this far easier

20221030_154857.jpg

Had to find a few hopefully short term spots to get some extra that wouldn't fit elsewhere away

20221030_171416.jpg

But all put away-ish and the wife's ride can sleep back in it for 1 night as tomorrow it goes to body shop to start repairs from being rear ended in early August

I would do the exact same thing. Get every piece I could and stash it everywhere. My children can have a giant bonfire when I pass on it if they don't want it.

It all got squirreled away pretty well....wife sticks her head out into the garage, looks around and just shakes it and goes back inside

That's some prime window scantling material if you get the urge to build yourself some wooden sash.. lol

Ironically this was all originally intended to be window material but it got a reprieve and sentenced to a new and yet undetermined fate.

Seriously though, I need to build about 40 storm windows and I don’t even want to think about what it’s going to cost me.

Any plans to leave the mitten and head west on I-80? I might know a guy

I somehow missed the level, square, fence storage - nicely done.

Thanks! It's normally hidden by the wife's ride but works pretty well. Some of the brackets are sapele from my last stockpile before I disposed of it prepping for this last move, others have moved to 3d printed designs

I have 'scrap' materials stored all over the place - 5 gallon buckets, piles under benches, stacks in the shed. It is the bane of my space challenged world. I'll be following closely to see how you solve for X.

Nothing mind blowing I'm afraid in this solution so far but the main things I was trying to keep in mind while doing this was:
-Shorter/lighter stuff up high, longer/heavier down low. I've accepted that much of this will have to be accessed via ladder
-Try and sort species/size/length to keep similar stock together
-Think hard about disposing of stuff less than 12" long
-Consider the 1st "S" in 5S again....and again as I grab stuff....it's "Sort" aka throw **** out that's not needed anymore so some of the stuff on the red rack that was there is now in the trash...some others moved to different location

But... but... think of all the stuff you could make with the small bits! Keep them. KEEP IT ALL!

Am I helping?

I think the "official" phrase for what I'm doing with some of the smaller bits is "community building"....aka driveway fires

I'd say you have the virus already

I'd ask for a 2nd opinion....but I think this is the 2nd as the wife just keeps shaking her head in disbelief and asking "what are you gonna make with all this???" to which I say "I don't know" and we then repeat back to more shaking of head

WOW!

Bret

Thanks!

Well in positive news Halloween was successful. Kids had fun, neighborhood had fun and weather was beautiful.

A saved search pinged on a potential garage fridge after trick or treating and I couldn't have gotten it much closer as it was all of a 5 minute drive...

20221101_211402.jpg

Temp display has a few burned out sections but it cools and doesn't have a freezer which was my primary desires. It looks far nicer than I was wanting/expecting/deserve but for 75 bucks I'm not gonna argue.

Now to stock it with more than the leftovers from the birthday party

In less fun news, in addition to candy being brought home, wife brought home covid...yay...so that's tossed our routine and week into the proverbial blender but fortunately she's not feeling much more than a mild cold at this point so she worked most of the day from the bedroom...if it continues like that we shall be very blessed.

Nice score on the fridge, and stocked with Mich Ultra, I'll be there in 30 😂

Sorry to hear about the wire. Hope it stays mild and she gets over it quickly without giving it to any of the kiddos.
