It's still slow these days, but i have been making some progress. I just made a jumper cable from the Compakomatic welder 110V outlet on the front to the feeder, and verified it worked, so now i don't need 2 power cables to run it. I also turned it all the way up and verified i wired the gauges correctly. The 10HP RPC actually JUMPS off the floor when i hit the trigger. I guess i need to get the 50HP working !

The other thing i got done besides some cleaning, was some work on the Detroit. I pulled the strangler off it and freed it up. I love love love how simple that thing is. I need to put it back together and paint it. I will pull the governor off and clean it up, then probably pull the injectors out and verify they are good. I think i will be pulling all the old controls off, since i want to move to PLC control on the safeties and shutoff so i can do auto start. Thinking of using a cummins grid heater on the blower inlet for low temp heating.

Still need to get more shelving up and the north wall. I'm procrastinating for some reason. Not sure why. Summer is going fast. Too fast. My brother and family were visiting for a while. I think he liked the shop progress. He thinks i've got too many projects though. I tend to agree.

More later.

Sounds like you have been still keeping up with things. Summer is a hard time to get shop related things done, it is either too hot or you are too busy. I found out my diesel powered winch has seized up since last Thanksgiving. I put the marvel mystery oil to it, keep your fingers crossed for me.

Will do Strouty! You're right, summer is tough to work on the shop, what with keeping up with honeydo projects and mowing and such. I'll keep plugging at it and update more later.

I invited dad up today, the local theater was showing American Graffiti on the big screen, so i took 3 generations to see it and introduce the kids to cruising culture. They liked it.

Now i'm going out to work on things again.

I'm back working on the shop, i pulled all the remaining pallet rack beams out of the weeds and have started to clean them up for paint. I need to get the last of the beams up and load the shelves to get the ceiling steel up. I have to get that up at minimum this winter so i can put up some insulation.

On a bright note, i now have a supplier of waste oil to feed the heater. Since i have that in place, i'd really like to get heat turned on this winter. That will significantly increase my capabilities. 6 months off a year due to cold is not productive...

Did you post details about the waste oil heater already? If not, curious to hear more about it.

Thanks

Sorry about the lack of updates. I havent been doing anything lately. My wife was admitted to the hospital 2 weeks ago and i have been burning the candle on both ends to visit her, take care of kids, house, and animals. All her work has become mine. Ill get back to it when it becomes possible.

Glad to see you getting back to the shop, the getaway place. Some times life gives a swift kick in the pants and lets us know what is really important.

Good to see your progress. A massive garage sale, a dozen or so trips to the recycling center and a few dumpsters worth of cleaning and you should have your situation much more sane. I wish you luck. And no, it is not a sin to get rid of things my friend. Peace

I know what you mean about getting rid of stuff, in 94 my twin boys got a 54 f-100 along with a box of spares that we used. Their was an extra gauge cluster that I saved and in a purging fit it went in a load of junk and got hauled off, well Saturday while
having breakfast with my friends one of them asked where he could find a speedo for a 54 he just got, didn't have the nerve to tell him.

Spareparts,
That name is very fitting for the story you just told, made me laugh. I've been there before when someone is looking for something very obscure and I just happen to have one. Like a couple weeks ago someone was looking for the torsion bars off of a 3/4 ton GM truck, he was thrilled I actually had an extra set and was willing to pay accordingly. :)

Well after 6 weeks of nearly no progress, we have gotten back to work. All beams are painted. Shelves are cut and installed. Now to work on filling them up. I will do that today and work on clearing the mezzanine.

Going through the pile of stuff on the mezzanine, lots to get rid of. Cummins parts, ford truck parts, etc.

Nice 66. Black is tough to pull off. Tentative plans for the convertible are restomod, family cruiser. 5.0 EFI/or variant, AOD, luxurious as i can make it top down/summer cruiser. Car was a texas car, found in a field, rotten top. It has bad floors. Everything else seems to be solid, haven't been far enough into the body to check cowl. All there, intact glass, etc. Some issues with the top mechanism, so i got a spare. MANUAL top, with AC, radio delete i think. Super weird combo. Converting to power top. I *MAY* get to it in my lifetime. I bought it sight unseen, based on price and location and options. It was less than a 1000.

My other one is also a rare one. 289/c4/factory ac/radio delete 500 coupe. Only 8000 ever made. Restored in 88-ish, turned from gramma car into firebreather. WAS about 500hp, have since de-tuned to to be more sane on the street. It was just too much before.

Hey, I was reviewing your early build pics and forgot you had Fairlanes. I was back in the states in May and pulled mine out of storage and did some work on it -- new radiator, 2.5" exhaust, redline tires (BFG Radial TA's) on some reproduction Magnum 500's, etc.

Still needs to be finished, but at least it's running and driving now.

Need to install the dash trim; have some that I had re-chromed.

Need some stock looking plug wires, different valve covers, etc, but otherwise pretty much done under the hood. Decal on the air cleaner says 390, but it's actually a pump gas 428 with a mild-ish solid roller, eddy heads, ported streetmaster, etc. Close to 500 hp.

Once I get the red GT rocker stripe installed, I think it will look 100% better.

Any progress on your two Fairlanes?

Scott

Wow, great looking 66. I have done nothing with the fairlanes in 10 years. Just too little time and space.

I pulled down the storage rack on the mezz today and cleaned the floor. First step is hang steel and lights then move more around and organize. A hot sweaty, buggy dark gloomy job. No lights.

It's been slow going the last few weeks, but i think we're about to break it loose a bit. HOpefully to get some stuff done in the shop before the snow flies.

The honeydo list had some work on the upstairs bath, basically a remodel including moving plumbing/electrical and drywall/paint.

In addition, i have some much needed maintenance to get done on my A4.

And finally, some time off for a wedding in Bay City and a visit to my brother in Texas.

I hope to be done and ready to start on the shop again by around Halloween.

Took a break this week and went to pickup a quest welder. It will replace my dialarc 250. Its a miller 330 a/bp. A fab shop in elkhart indiana had it on craigslist. I was the only caller. I threw an offer, he threw a counteroffer which i accepted. Picked it up last friday on a beautiful drive with the wife and dog.

It had sat in a corner for 30 years. They were an all mig shop. The manager didnt know why they even had it. It is basically unused.
Came with a giant cart and tig cooler along with a set of tig leads and two 18 series torch heads. For the princely sum of 300 dollars.

I got home and managed to get it out of the truck and under the leanto before rain hit. Then i started to work on figuring how to get 850 lbs of copper through the man door of the shop. The loader frame is too wide to fit through the door. I wanted to build a three pt boom pole but didnt have the right materials on hand. My next opportunity to visit the steel yard was black friday. Nobody was open. Then i decided to use the 3pt post hole digger boom. With some tack welds i was able to build this:

And finally lifted it into the doorway on blocking where the cherry picker took over.

And its inside to test out and get setup. Plan to replace the tig lines with new superflex and build a better cart. Anybody want the old welder?
