gday half cup is there any threads on framing stud walls in australia ive got 430mm bats if that helps

Hello, latterbrian2003, No, there is none, let me clarify that not that I have seen anyway.

I can recommend this publication though.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Australi...-Edition-Allan-Staines-2014-NEW-/201222546883

Detailed illustrations and a great publication, most news agents would have it.

Just a couple of questions.
Is your stud wall load bearing?
Height?
Basically if you are using pine go for an F5 structural grade.
90 x 45 top and bottom plates.
90 x 35 studs @ 450 centres.
90 x 35 noggins.
Cross bracing with some 25 x 1 Pryda flat strapping.

Regards

Yep, as 1/2 Cup said, that is the basis for framing. I'd also recommend 90x45 for the ends of your frame, and around openings (windows and doors) which should be a double - this is mentioned in the manual that 1/2 linked to on ebay.

I'd also add to use MGP10 rated pine as there are less knots (supposedly) in that timber.

That manual (and others from the same publishers) is available from most Bunnings stores in the DIY section too for the same price.

Knowing the problem is half the battle. You can get this organized. An it's not as "ugly" as you think and you have a lot of useful materials and tools that just need organization.

That's not really bad or ugly at all. Ok we ALL collected some more stuff than needed but all you need is some clean up.

Your bench looks great and not too cluttered with plenty of peg hook room.
Those odd lengths of wood are always difficult to deal with.

I wish my ugly section of the shed only looked as bad as yours, you have a couple of cool little items hanging from the roof as well. Keep up the good work.

X 2

However, your shed doesn't have any ugliness either Lee, it's got sooooo much cool stuff in it.

Looks pretty organised to me! As long as you can still work in there I don't see the problem :)

Problem is I can't swing a cat.

We have no doubt that you will keep on improving all your areas! I am really looking forwar to seeing what you come up with for the woodworking shed!

Thanks guys:thumbup:

I have been working on the under bench draws over the weekend, started on the draw slide supports today in between the Armageddon (according to Mrs 1/2 Cup ) in the kitchen our dishwasher leaked water every where. I suppose I can't complain when you get 22 years out of a Kleenmaid unit and not having to put a spanner to it.

Have a good one..

I was just telling Nicola last night about how tidy your place was...... Now I see this !!!

If I showed her your Untidy spaces, she would never let me live it down.

Some of my surfaces are a mess, but I can usually tell you, or go into my garage and fetch stuff in the pitch dark without dismembering or impaling myself, so it is a weird kind of "organised"

I suspect you know pretty much where every piece of inventory is in your shed and around it.

Rian,

For the most part the shed is tidy and well organised, you are right I can put my hand on anything without spending an hour looking for it. My benches are clean and stuff gets put away as I finish a job. Floors are swept and vacuumed weekly.

The big issue I have is that I am just plain and simple running out of room, the Storage Solution and new Wood work storage should solve most of my issues.

Nothing I saw was ugly. We all need supplies of this and that and we have to keep them dry. Sometimes, and I may be one of the worst, we think a shop has to be neat straight and clean. (OK--I am one of the worst). Lets make a New Year Resolution to stop being so "neat freaky". I will go first with some "dirty mess" photos on my thread.
Your shop is super great 1/2 Cup and I would love having that much room and storage space!!

Best Regards
Herb

So you don't feel bad. Here's my garage as it sits now.

I have had this area with bed frames and stuff that needs to be put away.

...Problem is I can't swing a cat. ...

Cat swinging is a bit over-rated anyway.

When we replaced our dishwasher, I fought my inner hoarder and took it straight to the tip - a couple of days later I realized that it would have made an excellent parts washer (it worked, it just didn't switch off the heating element - you had to turn it off at the wall socket).

I am hearing you Mark, my eldest son uses his as a parts wash along with his dishes.:shocking:

My dad operated an appliance repair business for many years, so I will do a bit of investigation before I recycle it but Mrs 1/2 Cup is having to learn a new skill - hand washing dishes.

Guess who is learning how to dry them.:shocking:

Thanks nine and cup. Sorry if hijacked your thread.

Hijack, what hijack have I missed something. ;)

Whats a noggin?
How will new britches help solve your clutter issue? :lol_hitti:

A noggin is the name for a horizontal piece of timber or lumber as you guys say, that fits between two vertical timber studs in a wall frame.

My plan both short and long term for the clutter is to do the following:

. Sort and reorganise the timber storage ( long stuff ).
. Similarly with the short bits.
. The new under bench draws will free up some of the shelf space.
. Convert the existing garden shed into wood working equipment storage unit.
. Build new garden shed on the eastern side of the house where there is enough real estate and that is just a paved area at the moment..
. The Storage Solution that is being considered beside the carport will house all my bulky Model A Ford bits and a designated secure antique display rather than having them in the shed and taking up valuable work space in the shed.

That's the plan, little bit at a time.

Yep, way to go

It sure is, when you see some of the setups here I am developing a complex for neat but it will have to wait some as my roofing iron, guttering and sundries for the carport arrived today, delayed some what as the supplier close down for 3 weeks over Christmas and I was late to order prior to, anyway its here now.

So guess what the focus is for the next few weeks??? but its all part of the plan.:rocker:

Have a great weekend, as usual pics to follow:thumbup:

I was looking forward to starting on the roof of the Carport yesterday but it turned out a little breezy to be handling sheets of iron and insulation.

The roofing iron and guttering. The color is Manor Red that matches our outdoor living area extensions roof and generally blends nicely with the brick color.

View media item 47318
So the order for Saturday went something like this:

. Unload roofing iron, collectively those sheets are heavy.

. We had decided on replacing the dishwasher as Mrs 1/2 Cup has dish pan hands after a week so it was off to Harvey Norman to select a new Miele unit which is due in Wednesday.

. Our lawns have grown what seems a foot in the last week following the drenching we had over the last week or so. Lawns done and dusted.

. My eldest son dropped by so I took the opportunity filling the tandem trailer, that I brought the iron home with of off loading a heap of stuff that was destined for his place in any case. 12 ft Electrical conduits, a roll of cable for his sheds electrical supply, some railway timber sleepers, gone..

. With the rest of the day I resigned myself to making it a weld up day, finishing the under bench draw slide supports and the frame for my steel top utility table that will be similar to the timber top one I have.

View media item 47317
So all in all a pretty productive day.

P.S. Mrs 1/2 Cup was out with a tape measure yesterday:shocking: I get nervous.
She has taken over our family room as a craft room, all the cupboards emptied and filled with beading stuff. I must say she has done a great job as to walk in there now it looks like any family room but I can't find where she has put things???

Have a great weekend.

1/2 cup.... can you recommend a drill press? Keep looking around but not finding anything that is inspiring me to part with my $$$$

The drill press I have was a second hand one brought at a trash and treasure market years ago, its and old 5 speed Herless made in Taiwan in 1980 it has been great although I would like to update it.

I have been looking at old Waldon drill presses just because of the quality aspect, but they are expensive, even second hand. I am thinking some thing with a variable speed drive.

Keep an eye out at what Hare and Forbes have on special, there are lots of options out there, as for quality that's another matter.

Let me know what you come up with..
