I have seen a few used on show cars at a few events now you mention how they work. I may have to look for a few to replace the Par38's that I have.

HOTFR8 The PAR 38 LED replacement is around $16
I am a big fan of the Cool White in favour of the warm white as is gives quite a crisp light and even use cool white throughout our place.

I trust this helps.

The more I think about it the more it sounds correct. I may visit L & H tomorrow for a look. They are just down the road from me.

One thing to keep in mind with the par38 replacement LEDs is that they start up dim and gradually get brighter - so they're not as effective for something like a motion-detector security light.

I have one in the flood light on our driveway (which we switch on at dusk and leave it on until we think to turn it off) which works very well.
I tried one in a security light in the in the back yard, but changed back to a normal incandescent par38 because we need instant lighting.

They're good in the right application - "horses for courses".

Edit:- That is what I found with the ones I've used (I think they were "Arlec" brand from the big green box) - they might not all be like that.

Mark the LEDs I picked up the other day start really well. That said a few years ago I purchased 6 PAR 38 replacements that had a CFL lamp in them and they do take a long while to get up to full brightness.

In my infinite wisdom I thought I would try 4 - 12 volt halogen - LED replacements from the same retail outlet as you. Two have failed and been replace under warranty but their output is disappointing and I am not a happy camper.

The Victorian Government now have a scheme going where they replace halogen down light lamps for free, given we have 22 of them which are mainly used for accent lighting, I will be taking their offer up but I am not sure what their quality is like. They are free so I am willing to give them a go.

Thanks for dropping by and adding you experiences in regard to LEDs.

BB, 1/2, I had heard they are not 100% for security lights and I was thinking more along the line for the display I have when showing one of the Hot Rods. Given they do not get hot it would be far better for a display light.

As for security I had the Police here at 2 am the other morning after some one tried the security door. They had been chasing this fellow all night and the old style flood light Par38 globe is much better for the security flood lights as I have been told today.

I also have one of these in the larger size that lights up one side of the house.

HOTFR8, The LEDs as an accent light is just ideal for a display.

As it happens I have a 400 watt unit like the ones above and it would light up 1/2 of Castlemaine but are a tad power hungry.

Not good hearing that some one has tried to enter your place. Do you normally have issues like that around your area?

As the security lights blow globes I have been replacing them with ones used from my car show display kit.Going LED with the display with LED Par38 replacements does make sense. As I said I have seen a few LED Par38 displays but never considered them until I read your topic yesterday.

I rarely turn on that big security light as it does use the power and as a security light it can often be on with a Roo or even something as small as a Bat. I have been told that light can be seen a couple of blocks away.

As for the Police being here the other night it is a rare thing and last time it was a young girl that created issues and that could have been drugs. The only time I usually see the Police is to dispatch an injured Roo. This time it sounds like it was a vagrant trying to find a place to crash. He had been an issue for the Police all night. I even went into the works and turned on the big street lights I have fitted on each end of the shed (they are on on time delays to off switches) before the Police arrived.

Having a short memory and long forgettery I needed an outside light timer that would turn lights on at or after dusk and turn them off later. I didn't want them on much past midnight so a simple photocell wouldn't work. I discovered astronomical digital timers that would do the job. I can't find any Australian models but did find US models from Honeywell and Intermatic. The Honeywell unit failed after a week and when I called to get the warranty honored, they told me I had to have a licensed electrician verify it was bad. Hmmm hire an electrician and wait for the replacement or buy an Intermatic unit for $25.

http://www.intermatic.com/en/products/consumertimers/in-wall_onoff_timers/7-day/st01k

Once installed, I set the switch for my latitude, ON delay (before or after sunset) and OFF time and someday replace the Lithium Ion battery that runs the IC chip. If you have low draw LED lights outside, you could have security lighting all night for pennies. I may not have done a proper Google search for the Australian version but it might be worth a look. OR, just remember to turn the lights off....

HOTFR8 the LEDs take the rough and tumble a little more and that has been a real pain for me even with QI lamps, you knock them while they are on and Bingo there goes another lamp. I dragged that 10 watt unit under the floor the other day and it got knocked over, bumped and it did not miss a beat, sure beats carrying a torch.

Bob, Intermatic make some real nice stuff and thanks for sharing. From what I can glean from the Nett some of their products are available out here.

The majority of our exterior lighting do have PIR sensors installed, we generally over ride them in any case with the exception of the carport lights which covers the front entry to our home very well. I have adjusted the sensitivity such that I do not get nuisance tripping yet the detection range is not compromised at all.

Looks like you have been very busy with the refurbishment on the house next door to you.
There has to be alot of satisfaction in knowing you are getting things fixed correctly.
Good job!

Back to work this week, it sure makes a change from what I have been doing over the last few weeks.

The break has done me good, even though the work load has piled up in my absence I have found that I have been able to approach it differently to what I would normally do and not let it get on top of me as it has done in the past.

I am down to the last 40 of the just short of 300 emails that came in over the three weeks whilst I was on leave. So for the next week or so it looks like my main focus will be on electrical design reviews for a number of new and upgraded pump stations we are project managing at the moment.

On the Western Wing front Mrs ½ Cup has been arranging the new window and floor coverings. The mate I was hoping to get a hand with some of the dry wall cornice/coving repairs can’t commit for another few weeks so it looks like I will tackle these myself over the next week end.

We will be also looking to start to relocate some of the stuff from the Shed Downunder to the West Wings Storage Annex A ( the shed ) which I am really looking forward to as this will free up things no end.

Thank you one and all for dropping by and have a good one.

Just popping in to see how "back to work" was treating you. Not bad..300 emails.

Too bad about the help you won't be getting with the drywall. I'm sure you'll prevail as usual. G'day 1/2 cup.

Queensland has nice mild winters 1/2cup...

...just sayin'. :dunno:

Mark It has been pretty chilly down this way of late, a bloke should take you up on that.

Dan I have deleted about 30%, filed another 30% as an FYI and the rest of the emails I will have to respond to.:eyecrazy:

I will have a crack at the drywall repairs this week end, one thing about this home it has certainly kept me of the streets and out of trouble over the last little while but I am enjoying the challenge.

Joys of returning from vacation, email.

Will the west wing serve as storage or the Model A garage?

Shorty Emails :willy_nil my work runs on emails sadly. Call me old school but I would much rather a face to face conversation any day.

I will most certainly be using the West Wings Storage Annex A for both storage and storing some of my Model A spares that are currently in the Shed Downunder:thumbup:

I can't wait to be honest will be such a breath of fresh air to have enough room in the shed to be able to swing cat.

( PS no cats will be harmed in measuring the space.)

Thanks for dropping by yet again and have a great day everyone.

1/2: as has been said by others that have watched you take on the new rental's electrical and basically all it's needs you've done an amazing job in a month. as I used to say going to work was actually easier than working around the house and chasing the kids, but it's all good.

i'm almost ready to share a few pictures of my 24 x 24 shop racking and my 20 x 20 storage unit if you might want to see them and maybe get a few ideas on storing and being able to work on a car or park a trailer in them.

keep up the great work and good luck with the drywall. as you probably know when doing drywall work it's easier to put on light coats than have to sand the heavy ones down after each one.

drives thank you so much.

Looking forward to seeing your set up and glean a few ideas for the shed..:thumbup:

Your tips in regard to the dry wall are duly noted, it is pretty cool here at the moment and the top coat does take a while to dry as I found out last week when I was finishing around the socket outlets. I have had the Gas ducted heating on when I have been working in the West Wing with the temperature set fairly high and that has helped no end.

Thank you again and have a great day..

Moving air dries mud better than anything.

Heat and dehumidifiers help too, but fans moving air is best.

1/2: I actually knew what you meant by GLEAN and happy to help if I can. not sure your Gumtree is full of commercial racking like our Craigslist is, but that's what I use in my spaces to get stuff up out of the way and off the floor. in my 20 x 20 storage unit I have 3 uprights along the back with shelving 7, 6, & 5.5 feet wide that take up that space.

of course with your skills and a little metal you can probably build something to customize your space since it's your own and you are not leasing it like I am.

in the front portions I put 3 9 foot wide racks that are about 4 foot deep sideways so I can pull a trailer or car under them. or when I don't have vehicles in there I just put up a few more racks. the nice thing about my storage is that my ceilings are 14 foot tall so my 12 foot racks can hold a ton of stuff above the 7 foot first shelf.

the nice thing about these commercial shelving racks is they don't need shelving at the bottom so I (we) can put cabinets, rolling tool boxes and machines and such under the first shelf that can be moved and accessed easily.

GOOD LUCK

That was what got me. :bounce:
Althought you are always gathering for some project. :)

HOTFR8, you are right. No matter what I am currently working on I am always on the lookout for stuff, you just never know when it may come in handy.

Yep, we used to have to "look It up in your Funk and Wagnalls".

Mark, now that’s a blast from the past we did have a set of Funk and Wagnalls in the book shelf at home when I was growing up.:D

Strouty, I agree, even today I still favour hard copy and we still have a phone book.

I can’t believe where the time has gone either. :headscrat

1/2 please don't tone it down, we Yanks have learn somewhere.

Shorty, no worries and I will maintain the status quo.

Drives, we are pretty fortunate here in Shepparton as there is a couple of places that sell new second hand commercial racking at ½ reasonable prices and quite often some do pop up on our local Gumtree. My eldest used to work at a place that sold racking and I can always swing a deal with them when the time comes.

Many years ago a mate of mines brother worked with one of our big banks in the Facilities Section and in conversation one day my mate said to me would you like some shelving for your shed, never letting an opportunity go by I jumped at the prospect. Apparently when they refurbished a Bank Branch everything got thrown to land fill including the shelving which by the way had never seen anything other than paper records stored on them. The months went by and I thought nothing more of it until one week end my mate pulled up at home with a trailer load of shelving and said “ it all yours “ . Wow that made my day.

Here is a link to their site:

Thank you one and all for dropping by, I had best get back to work.

Eight hours to go and the weekend is here.:3gears:

1/2, sorry but we still have a set of F and W here. I don't think anyone has looked at them in about 6 years since my daughter finished high school. She used them on a report into "how my parents studied".

The problem that I have with searching on the internet is that there are usually companies listed that are no longer in business as well as listing for some company that has nothing to do with what you want.

1/2 I have my little reference library with a lot of great books, some I had never heard of until I joined the GJ, but now when I need info I can usually find it fast.

Terrick I got a chuckle out of that one but actually their content for the most part would be still relevant today.:D

PS sadly you can't give them away at a garage sale now a days.

Talking about phone books. My new one recently went straight to the recycle bin.

Very poor delivery if you could call it a delivery at all.

That disgusting HOTFR8, I am guessing some one is now looking for a new job.

Did you eventually get a new one?

At work I do find many Web sites with out of date material that you rely on from time to time. With the electrical equipment we use the net and our reference material is only a starting point and I normally confirm with our suppliers that any specification data is current prior to purchasing it.

Thank you for dropping by yet again and have a good one.

Only four hours to go and I am out of here. The week end is upon us.

Plenty of complaints made about the so called delivery and it is sub contract.
Last time the Scout Group did it so no idea this time who they are and from all reports they lost the contract to deliver. As yet I have not received a new phone book and will have to wait and see if the Post Office has any.

If the job is worth doing then it is worth doing properly. Relates to many things these days on this forum as well. Even 1/2 does not do things in half.

Never do things by 1/2 and as my grandfather all ways said to me if you are going to do something do it well.

Many thanks for dropping by and have a great weekend.
