Bench Grinder

Friends,

Any recommendation on a good bench grinder? I've been needing one for a while and am debating on getting a new one or trying to find a good used one.

Mostly will be used for light duty stuff like sharpening mower blades and such. I imagine I'll get the stone on one side and brush on the other unless there's a new/improved school of thought on this.

Thanks,

Joe

No worries - I searched before posting and the latest threads were 2016 and 2014. I was hoping for more current info but I'll do some more digging.

From what I've seen thus far, the vintage Craftsman ones are pretty good.

What is your use case? Craftsman block grinders are good for home use. For heavy duty industrial use, baldor (new or used) or other vintage US made grinders.

A little over a year ago I was in the same boat. I wanted to add a grinder and maybe a buffer to my garage. When I looked at all the readily available options like Dewalt, Ryobi, Sunex, HF and others in that sort of price range, I wasn't sure what to get.

I'd just gotten into collecting and restoring old vises thanks to GJ and it wasn't long before I realized how much of a following the old Craftsman block grinders have here as well.

I picked up my first one as an add on purchase from a lady I initially contacted about buying an Athol vise she had listed for sale. She was in CA and I live in AZ but we were eventually able to arrange to meet and I was able to buy the vise for $75 and a Craftsman 1/3HP grinder on an original stand for another $75.cfa902623edb175aea7dab1cb2805ac6.jpgThe grinder was missing the guards, tool rests and eye shields and I planned on watching eBay for replacements but as luck would have it, she found a box in the garage with all the missing parts and shipped them to me. She wouldn't let me pay her any more money even for the shipping! After receiving the parts I went to work on cleaning the grinder up and doing a sort of mini restoration. It was really in good shape and didn't need much and it was instantly evident that buying an old grinder was the right move for me.4bb17d8c5bf47a3e16dfbca1b4e7c23d.jpgI have no desire to get into collecting grinders like I do vises but I have added a 1/2HP Craftsman Commercial grinder and a small Baldor I picked up for $40 that I've set up as a buffer. Having the second grinder certainly comes in handy instead of changing stones/wire wheels all the time and the little Baldor is remarkable as a buffer, even with those 8" pads!e845050f66a8f376b46570c232a8f8ef.jpgdce0dc3085a79f0fa715fff250112dc8.jpgBoth of my CM came on original stands and I was also able to pick up another stand for the Baldor. I'm really looking forward to getting my garage set up and getting these bolted down when we buy a house later this year.b9a21a97e98d5993ad4626c95f30ed3d.jpg4425b430e9c4011c6e608f43a00e886e.jpgWhether you decide to buy a new or vintage grinder, I hope my story helps and didn't bore too much!

You are doing it wrong. There are 20 pages of threads when you search "bench grinder" using the advanced search function.

tool_scrounge - light duty / homeowner (non - commercial / industrial)

1982fxr - thanks, I'll check them out

chrisnazzy - very cool! I wish you were a bit closer as I'd make an offer to take one of those off your hands.

jonshonda - thanks, I did do a specific "bench grinder" search with quotes but I'll try the advanced option to see what turns up.

No need to do anything special, just type bench grinder in advanced search, and you should be golden.

mikegt4 - much appreciated & thanks for the great thread links!

evintho - thanks for posting, I've been eyeing this one but don't know much about old grinders. I think for $45 I might just give it a try.

Indexmill - good info, thanks

1982fxr - thanks for the info, I'll try to verify

Definitely Wissota. Looks like it will need some TLC, so I would offer less $$ in case the bearings need replacement.

yup that is a wissota and looks like it may be an early e-7. i would be leary of the hose clamps holding it together. the base and motor housing should be bolted together and there should be no holes for them to go through the base.

exmaxima1 & sk farmer - thanks for confirming. I think the bearing and refinishing might be a bit more work than I'd care to get into. We're getting ready to build our homestead and while I don't mind a bit of hard work I can't commit to a grinder refinishing project right now.

I did call and text the fellow who advertised it but haven't heard back.

sk farmer - wow, great job!

Any thoughts on this one (USA made Black and Decker):

For a used one, budget is $225 or less. I was considering this one:
https://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/tls/d/garland-baldor-673e-grinder-buffer-usa/6803775320.html

But it was made in June 1979 (according to Baldor). I can't see paying that much for a 40 year old grinder. Am I off in thinking this way?

Don't let the age scare you but that price is too high for a 6" 1/3 HP machine IMO.

The Black & Decker you linked falls in the better than no grinder category. I guess you could get it as a stop gap to buy you some time to find a good machine at a good price.

exmaxima1 Thanks for confirming, agreed. I'm pretty close to just getting a Delta for $99 since I need one pretty soon but have been holding out to see if I can find a good US made one.

Here's what I've boiled it down to.

Can pick up now:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/DELTA-Delta-6-in-Bench-Grinder/50150070

Can order: ** Corrected info: Baldor shut down 1 plant but still makes grinders. **
https://www.mile-x.com/baldor-612r/bal612r

I wish the Baldor had a light but I could just get a goose neck shop light and bolt it to my bench.

Quick question: Should I worry about whether to buy "exhaust" or "non-exhaust" types? **

I do not plan on hooking up a hose or exhaust system but don't know if there's an advantage or disadvantage of either system or if it just doesn't matter if a person is not using an exhaust system.

** Got my answer from a vendor: exhaust and non-exhaust is not really a factor if you don't plan on using that feature.

The amperage on that Delta grinder is only 2.5 amps, so it is a very weak grinder. I would think it would quickly bog down if you sharpen mower blades with it. Not worth it.

exmaxima1 - good to know, guess I'll order the Baldor if I don't find something used soon.

The baldor you linked isnt much better. I would wait to find something bigger. I have a small grinder and it is more frustrating than useful. Besides, as noted above, an angle grinder and a vise is probably easier and faster for mower blades

I think Baldor is just discontinuing their smaller benchtop grinders. The most recent catalog from a few months ago makes no mention of 6" grinders, but still lists 7" and up.

What do you guys think of Dayton grinders?

Found one of cl 3/4hp 8” wheels

I need one and plan on putting a multi tool on it. But can’t decide if I should get it or just pay up for the jet combo....

Friends,

I corrected an earlier post in this thread. I heard from a (one) retailer that Baldor stopped making grinders but this morning I called Baldor in Grand Prairie, TX and confirmed that they still make grinders. I didn't dig very deep to see if any specific modes were discontinued.

My apologies for the bad info.

For mower blades, use a 4.5" rt angle grinder and an 80 grit flap wheel.

I have an old HF 8" bench grinder that's ~3 amps; it's not powerful enough - so go much higher on amps.

If you search and read the threads the answers are almost all "vintage USA" as that's the crowd here. Same on vises. There have been threads on new grinders so there is info here if you want to go new
