I did that to mine right after I saw Frank's. Awesome! I like my chucks tight, and I use the "Tighten three times, once in each hole" Method. It works great, but THEN you need to loosen it... No more hurting my hand or needing a box end wrench as a cheater,,,

Finally got to work on my DP last night. Broke down nicely, even the column came out of the base easily! Don't have a lathe so I rigged this up to my drill to clean the base.

2" PVC jammed into the base well, then I used my heat gun to soften the PVC and clamped it to a hole saw bit. Laid the column on some casters and voila!

Other pics show the column half cleaned and then finished. Got to polish up a few other parts as well.

Next up is trying get the spindle pulley bearings off and cleaned. Going to try Franks contraption to pull them off!

Lookin' good!

I added this floor model to my shop today. I took a picture of it sitting next to my modern Craftsman dp. I never liked how unstable my modern dp was and comparing the two, I'm amazed at the difference.

I brought the motor into work and sweet talked an electrician into putting a new pigtail on it.

I pulled out the middle pulley to take pictures of some details. Any way to tell if this is original?

Take a look at the first post and scroll through all the links until you find the one for the middle pulley. That one is definitely home-made... not sure how well it works? Looks like some thought was put into it. Highly suggest looking through those links as they have great info.

Nice dp by they way, should clean up nice.

dp#43

dp#43 is a 113.213780. I think I have it sold before I left the estate sale to another guy there.

6/6/2018

The refurb of dp#43 is complete.

6/12/2018

I sold dp#43 today, but not to whom I expected.

Thats the way to do it! what do you have hiding behind the dp?

I keep saying this but I need to go to some estate sales.

It’s an 1980s Craftsman (Emerson) radial arm saw.

Estate sales are where it’s at, if they price them right.

I picked up a 1910-1920 Samson Vise today for $30 at an estate sale. 4” Jaws. Samson was the vise brand for Sears before Craftsman came in. Most likely made by Rock Island.

Sorry got of topic but I’m proud of that find.

Re: The Classic Craftsman 100/150 Drill Press

I see so many of those saws for sale, anywhere from $50 to $300. Which ones are worth looking at?.

I have an 1989 one like the one pictured and it has been fantastic. They did a recall on them a few years ago where you had 2 choices: cut the motor off and send it to them for $100 or they send you a retrofit kit.

Kit had a new guard with better pawls and riving knife and cane with a new table top. I was able to get the kit.

The older ones are probably more rigid.

The ultimate radial arm saw to me though is the Dewalt ones from the 1950s, when it was owned by AMF.

This sale has tonnage! I was there last week and spent just $5.

I went back today for the drill press and found a bunch of other stuff. The dp motor and cover were already loaded in the car before I thought to take a picture.

Also picked up the Craftsman flexible shaft, three dial indicators and other bits and pieces. One Starrett DI is sticky the other is siezed, so not sure about them. The Federal DI is nice!

They're going to be back next Saturday and I may have to go back a third time.

I don't believe the retro-kits are available any longer, but I think the recall is still going from 2000. I told them about the recall website for them to check. That pic of the dp and ras is at the sale.

Yes, those old solid cast iron arm DeWalts from that era were good, indeed. As soon as B&D bought DeWalt from AMF, they started cheapening the saws in various was, some changes more egregious than others. However, there was one model saw, the 7790, the B&D didn't muck about. It was sold as a contractors saw and retained the solid top iron arm and the great reliability of alignment for which the old DeWalts have always been known. The 7790 (790 is the same saw) was made until 1989 and it's design was virtually unchanged for 30 years. (Sorry for continuing off-topic, but I just finished putting one of these back into service and have been enjoying it.)

I can second the quality of the old DeWalts. I have three. two 8" and one IIR is 12. It's probably the contractor's version mentioned. One 8 needs rewired, the other has a windings problem after many years of good use. The big one needs a new starter cap as I used to have to hand start the spin to crank it up. I didn't want to damage it so I "retired" it til I get that cap... I need to find the size it uses as I don't think they are marked.

Post the question over at the DeWalt Radial Saw Forum, someone there will tell you. Give the model number and the motor frame number.

My guess is that either the whole thing tipped over at some point or the damage was done when the guy was doing the mods for the third pulley. I'll never know.

I have not found anything else damaged. if I can find parts for a reasonable price, then I'll replace them.

My goal is to get the motor working - replace the power cord and the capacitor. I'm also thinking about repainting the motor.

I repainted the DP the original hammered gold, but painted the motor the hammered bronze.

JZ is using imgur and it doesn't usually display a photo unless the "s" is removed from "https".

Does this work?:

I thought I had a picture of my chuck key. Guess I don't. Sears was a ghost town when I went over to buy a screwdriver. The only thing close was beer bottle opener. Fastened it to one of the retractable key ring things janitors keep all the keys on. Works for me. Hanging on right side in this pic. Bear

I picked this up at the ReStore for $56. Then a week later I got the Sabre saw attachment for $5.
I did get a Model 100 recently(posted above), but I've got some irons in the fire right now. Hopefully I can get some pics posted soon after cleaning it up.

Thanks. It might be my job that causes it, but the more look at it, the more I see that is worn or chipped off.

Well I’m used to buying “well loved” machines. If there is still factory paint it’s “mint” to me. Usually most of the items I buy are painted with this orange crusty substance. I forget the name, but it starts with an “r”.

Can't believe you found that at restore.
Anything at mine is completely rusted out.
I did a search yesterday and there are quite a few for sale in various price ranges and models. One like yours was listed at $300.

There's one just like (or was listed)it listed for $50 on CL, but it's 3 hours away on the sunrise side of the state.
Check out my ReStore thread for the other things I've picked up.

Finally finished the restore of my grandfather’s drill press. I was lucky...it was in great shape so really just needed a clean up. Didn’t have to replace bearings or do any motor work. I’m sure that would have given me troubles! Thanks to All, especially Frank, for all the advice. No way I could have done this without all these posts! Can’t wait for the next project...he also left an old planer and table saw!

Looks Great!

Ditto!

That one is amazing!... excellent paint and table top! The trim panel is one of the nicest I've seen.

The feed stop collar is upside-down, but that's nbd. The quill is down an inch or so, is the spring adjusted yet?

Regardless, it's a beautiful tribute to your grandfather!

I sold dp#42 yesterday with the belt cover from dp#41. It's a very nice machine and went to an excellent home! Thanks Jim!

The refurb of dp#43 is progressing... the base, column and table to go. I had planned to part it out, but I think I had it sold before I left the estate sale where I bought it.

Thanks Frank - I did the spring adjustment. I'll check when I get home - I think I just locked it there when I used it. I was wondering about the stop lock - that's how it was when I picked it up. I'll flip that around too. Thanks again for all the advice.

What do you guys use to clean the old dirty paint? I was quite shocked to see the difference when I took that aluminum cover off.

Has anyone had issues with the pin alignment? Do I just need to bang it in there? It just doesn't seem to align properly.
