Half cm would be easy to repair, problem is something that should be smooth is grainy and something that should be flat is wavy. And the most fucked up thing is how the granite got from beautiful to ****.

My original comment was about letting OCD run wild - people have a tendency to hyper focus at the time.

Those kind of problems, especially in your house, would send me into uncharted areas of __________!!! I had to put a blank there because I could see myself going off in several directions.

I toured a $4.5-$5M house that was similar in size to mine. It was nearly perfect. I was looking at all the drywall details that I am not happy with at my place.. theirs is perfect.

It is almost nearly 10 times more than I spent. In order to get things so flawless, they built the loaded structure separate from the cosmetic and used metal studs for cosmetic walls. The drywall and trim/finish guys alone probably cost half what my entire house did.

It was hard for me to just say "**** it" and get the house done, but I am glad I did. The flaws that are too much for me to handle.. I am fixing one by one, while enjoying the house.

I am a true perfectionist and when things don't go the way I expect them to go I get stressed/burned/pissed breakdown style.

A lot of things are not done correctly and I wanted them to be flawless.

Result:
Disappointment

Result of the Result:
Halted the house, counted to exactly 1'345,000 and took deep breaths for 15 days.

15 Days later:
I called a couple of friends that had friends that had cousins that had friends that built houses. 2 guys came as a favor and I asked for advice on the finishing. Both were very helpful and gave me proper advice.

Advice in their words:
A house can't be flawless and when you actually live there you won't care about the flaws.

Advice as I understood:
Stop caring about details and just finish already.

This build has been such a learning life process. From dealing with horrible people (neighbor) to dealing with horrible people (builders) to dealing with horrible people (another builders)

Also the fact that Work consumes me at full right now contributed to the lack of control over the house and how I expected things to be done.

I'm gathering momentum, re planning what is yet to be done to be done in certain order and quality. Many cool ideas like floating walls were ditched because I was rushed into finishing*, now I'm going to take 5 minutes instead of 5 seconds to take decisions.

*Rushed into finishing Like it would have mattered anyway. 12 months planned . I'm sure I will hit the 24 mark.

The bathroom rendering was probably my absolute favorite, I really liked the gravel next to the tub, was a nice addition and brings elements of outside, inside.

another thing I had an issue with regarding timeline was the rate at which I was burning cash due to construction loan interest... once I started factoring that in, I really wanted to kill people that were late/no shows/low quality work. If "time value of money" was not an issue, I might have gone slower..

I had a similar issue with Social Security taxes. I was paying while no one was working or working for another people. Oh the Joy.

Just found the thread swimming in page 17, since I'm such an attention ***** when I use my internet mask I will bump the thread with some "progress" pictures.

- The original design had a tree in the corner of the house, which was now impossible because of the much lower dirt level. What was the answer to that problem? A heavily over sized tree pot.

It will be covered with decking and some stone. Looks good in my imagination.


- The doors, they have been a PITA, wood was not dry enough so they pulled, and some of them are still pulling after a second assembly. But they are worth it. The taller ones are 280lb and required a lot more thought than anticipated.

- Windows are coming in slowly, tint was a bit too much but I appreciate the privacy. The lower ones have an extra layer of security film and make the glass look grainy but I will live with that.

- And lastly, the garage door. 1 piece of guillotine action ready to slam any car roof the day a cable snaps

Update:

Went to the house yesterday to manually water the green wall ( my temporal electricity contract is over ) . took some better pictures.

- The killer stone is going to be removed from the shower area, not because I want to but because I have to. No sealer could penetrate enough and I really don't want to deal with humidity on the exterior of the house. Marble is on the way.

What to do with the extra stone? kuchupaw! I intended to leave this bare concrete but

You gotta admit the continuous roof is amazing, too bad the average person won't notice it or even care

They will be flush with their outer walls

Managed this with a very hard to photograph extra lip on the doors and some clever spacing.

This is the spacing left for the lip to close flush

and this is the lip, invisible to the picture but the front of the door sticks about 10mm over the frame of it.

and finally, last shot of the garage with the second vehicle ever to be "inside"

Still a LONG way to go but I can see progress now, helps a lot on the motivation side.

Love the lack of jambs. make sure you put cardboard on the doors and corner protectors. They will get screwed up by contractors!

I didn't said anything to my wife and asked if she noted anything different on the doors. The answer was, -really heavy?

No one knows what happened, I think the kids did it because after some CSI magnification of the affected area I assume one took the bottle and spun on his own axis pressing it, making those circles. At least they didn't do a pee contest. I don't think the floor is damaged any more than what its already done by the people working on the house

I love the continuous ceiling. It definitely makes you push the envelope in order to get the ceiling exactly square and level. While opening the door you'll notice every tiny imperfection in the ceiling.

Again a job well done!! I love to see it finished but I'm sure you are even more anxious then I am.

Exactly, ceilings are going to be fixed in some spots where its just evident they are not even 80% flat. Plaster is nice but as I have learned it can't be 100% perfect because of the way it is applied. I understand that now and getting everything as 99% as possible.

Again a job well done!! I love to see it finished but I'm sure you are even more anxious then I am.

I was anxious but that was the main thing killing me, now I'm very calm and philosophical about finishing

Your details are fantastic and as you have found difficult to achieve. I've been involved in some projects that had similar levels of detail and precision and found it difficult to find trades that worked to that level - you're patience in getting there is outstanding.
We did a residence once that, among other things, had a rule: no cut tiles. And it had a two car garage with all walls tiled in 4" Sq. ceramic that was part of an existing structure that was around 70 years old. Just another challenge.

it was - and the grout lines were spec'd of course. This was a small part of a $20M renovation. Crazy precision throughout.
