I think this is a great build. Maybe I missed it, but is it insulated behind the troldtekt ceiling tiles?

Also did you put any sort of membrane underneath the tiles on the garage?

The workshop havent been insulated yet in the roof...

It will be with paperwool, and I have a friend with a machine that blow it in where its needed. I will just take one of the troldtekt ceiling plates down when its needed.

In the garage building i dindnt use a membrane. The garage will not get insulated, and steelplates need good ventilation because of change of tempeture on the plate. It can give problems with condensation.

Great job on all you've done! What year is your BMW?

Actually I dont know. I would belive its 1979 to 1982. It was one my father build 15 years ago. He have not been driven it that much due to lack of sparetime.

But in the 80's it was used for police motorcycle in Denmark.
The BMW 2-cylinder boxer was quite popular as a police bike. Don't know why, because I don't think it's that fast. Even though I have never been driven it. Dont have the motorbike license.

I'm really impressed with the progress you are making. You have not shown us any work being done in the house side. If you renovate that as well you can continue posting words and pictures. As long a your house is attached to your shop/garage it is part of your project.

Hello again.

Home again from Scotland. Cold cold scotland...

My girlfriend helped me the last couple of evenings, and she is way better to throw out things than me :)
I need SPACE!!!!

But first I had to fix the brakes on my father in laws car. After all, he have helped me a lot during the last years. :)

After that, I cleared the walls, and started painting. I bought the cheapest paint I could get, and even though I painted them 3 times, it needed a layer more :shocking:

I still need to finish the edges.

All the **** thrown back on the shelf. Still a big mess.

Winter is coming.... :) The tractor needs a good place to sleep next couple of months.

Just enough space.

The most needed tools will be put into this cabinet.
All the special auto tools will be placed on the wall in front of the Launch lift.
All the tools for rust protection will be placed on the wall in front of the old stenhoej Lift.
All normal tools in front of the workbench.

These shelfs have to be reinforced. This was done by Maria(GF). A bit more in order, but this have to be more organized.

Tonight work

I might get the next couple of weeks at home. So hopefully I will have some more time spend in the workshop.

1. My good friend Kim will be home within a week from work in Scotland, and then I hope he got time for Insulate the ceiling :drool:

2. I spoke with a guy who make roofing with asphalt. The workshop really need a new roofing. This building is over 40years old, so this is worn out. He will be here within end of December.

3. I just installed the pressure lines for the compressor between the garage and workshop. The compressor will be stored in the garage, because of I need the space :) A small sound barrier will be build around the compressor. I is quite a big one at 400Liters. 3 cylinders.

I forgot that I just recived the last materials to finish up the ceiling.

Over the garagedoor there is only space for 45mm(1,8inch) insulation.
I had the opportunity to get some "better" insulation then.
Normal Rockwool insulation have a lambda value at 37 mW/mK
I got some Rockwool flexi SUPER!!! Lambda value at 34 mW/mK

Just cost a hell lot more :)

Just some quick prices. Normal Rockwool insulation

150mm pr square meter : 50dkr (7,15USD) (6inch thick)
45mm pr square meter : 17dkr (2,4USD) (1,8 inch thick)
400mm pr square meter : 140dkr (20USD) (16inch thick)

In new houses we put 400mm into the outer walls.

Hello again.

Some small progress.
Did a "half" section more of the ceiling. The rest will be done within a couple of weeks. Because the roofing is about to be changed within 2-3 weeks.
The concrete roof is a bit wet at the moment, because the asphalt roofing is over 45year old. So its a bit worn :)
That section will be insulated with 45mm rockwool.

At the moment the temperature is about 0-1 degree outside (picture taken a few days ago) Inside the garage it is about 5C. (32F) Hope this will help with the insulation in the ceiling.

Next job is to sort out how to store all my nuts and bolts.
Got quite a few.

The problem is, when it is stored like this, it takes a lot of storage space.
My thoughts was, to put all the nuts and bolts away that I rarely use, and only have the most needed on shelfs. Another problem is, when I store it like it is being now, it get covered in dust over some years. I like my nuts clean :D

Any of you have some ideas how to solve this?

At the moment I got a couple of these
getimage.aspx

I would like some of these, but they are quite expensive. @@400USD each

Rene: always nice to pop in and see what you've done to your place. here's some cabinets i use for nuts and bolts. there are also some military cabinets you might be able to find on your side of the world that would work too. you can also put the nuts and bolts in their boxes in your open parts bin if you want to keep them clean and label the bin.

there are also more vintage metal cabinets on the thread i started in the vintage tool section if you want to stop in and take a look and maybe make a post to comment.

keep posting pictures as you have time and we are all watching you even though a lot of members and internet lookers don't post anything.

take care and hope you are ready for winter.

Hi Drivesitfar...

Having that in my workshop could be nice!

But whenever something is "vintage" it cost a lot.
I see a lot in here have a "gas station"/military/vintage/other theme. I like it!
But it cost a lot, and at the moment I wanna spend my money on something to get the best use of it. So it will be a practical garage to work in. And not a total clean workshop.
Im planning to do some rust protection (sticky oil protection underbody) And that makes a mess.

All these oil vapours gives a sticky layer all over the garage. Also on my nuts and bolts. When you apply a dust layer, you cannot just blow it away with compressed air :)

The cardboard cases for the bolts are in a bad shape, because of the high humidity in my last garage. These were also stored incorrect, so many of the boxes cannot close anymore.

I like your idea of having a cabinet system, so everything is in order. I think for next time, I will try to make some drawings about how to store this in a cabinet system like you have showed.

Thanks for your input.

Goodnight from Denmark.

Rene: you are welcome and hope you come across some of these old metal cabinets at an auction or sale. another option if your boxes are trashed is to maybe buy or make some small boxes to fit your open parts bin or plastic containers so you can use it until you find a better option. some members have found and used wood organizers, but you just need to be careful not to weld or grind around them.

good luck and keep up the great work on your garages and home.

OHHHH ****....:shocking:

You know the feeling when you have used maybe an hour on a update, and then click at the RED X in top left corner? Oh no...

Lets start all over again.

To avoid the wood getting soaked up with condens water, I applied a layer of asphalt. I dont know if it was necessary. Now its done :)

The wood from the first picture is mounted directly on the concrete deck. With 4 screws/meter (8mm plug, and 5mm screws)

Between these the rockwool insulation will be mounted. With a thickness on 45mm. Not much, but there isn't space for more. :(

Progress :)

???

Ohhh,, I just love this tool...

Im not a pro, but I think this went okay.

Finish for tonight.

More tools since last time :) Cant wait for start up using this garage.

Have fun all. :)

Rene: i put a new line in my signature that really applies to your work. Nicely done again. Those cabinets you saw at the auction look great but guessing they sold for too much or did you buy them?

Whats next?

Is all the ground work you did helping keep the water draining so no mud this winter?

Drivesitfar.
Well the prices ended fine, but the thing is, that there was about 9hours drive to get them, plus I have to pass the only way in Denmark we have road tax. (About 60USD)

Gasoline in Denmark is about (1,66USD/liter /// 6,33USD pr US gallon)

So these cabinets got quite expensive. But they would have been great in my workshop.

So at the moment im just looking for more or less the same, just within 1hour drive :)

Regarding the driveway. It is completely dry now. Even though we have a very wet December here in Denmark, the rainwater gets transported away from my property.
There have only been one example, where the driveway was under water, and I did get water into my basement. And that was because one of the pipelines further away was filled with sand and mud. That should be fixed now.

At the moment the plan is changing all the time, due to bad weather here in Denmark. My friend who have a insulator machine is booked for the rest of the year.
And the guys who are ment do to the roofing is delayed as well...

And one thing I have learned during my job in the Windturbine industry is, that the weather cannot be controlled. We just have to fit in :)

J.O.V and 1969. Thanks a lot guys... :)

Todays work in a bit....

Im now at this point, where I can't get further with the ceiling before the roofing is made. Not much to do about it.

But I managed to finish most of the ceiling yesterday.
Doing this on my own is not easy, and maybe it could have been done much faster if I had a helper. :)

Never or less, here is the result.

I made the framing out of the same 45x95mm wood. I had plenty of it due to bad calculations :dunno:

I have a clever dog. (Fifi) Fifi knows that the heat transfer in concrete is way more than rockwool insulation. :willy_nil (Race: Labrador Formula one)

Finish result. The clearance between the garage door springs and the ceiling is only about 1/4inch. And maybe that is too little when its time for Maintenance on it :) I hope not.

Another project today is to get rid of this pallet tank.
Inside there is about 300liters rust protection for underbody cars. Got this for a special price. :thumb:
When I opened the valve, I drained it for about 10liters of dark oily water. The next 5liter was a mic of thick heavy oil and water.

But not it should be pure coating for underbody rust protection :)
The next question is, will I ever use all this???

From the beginning I wanted to have some kind of burning light all the time. Just some LED 3watts ore something. Then there will always be light enough to navigate around the workshop without turning on the main lights.

When I started to do the frames for the ceiling, I made a list over all the electrical wiring I had to do. (This is hidden over the ceiling)

And off cause I forgot this idea with small LEDs around the shop.

I found these LED bars I got from my father in law. These are 9watts each, and gives plenty of light.
I test fitted it, to see if this was something that could work.
I will let it stay on for some days, and see if its something I will make as a permanent solution. (Sorry for the overblown picture)

Everything for this time.

Temperature is about 2-5degree C(35F-41Fahrenheit) during the day, and -2 to 3degree C.(2F-37F) during night.
I really want the garage to be insulated soon, and maybe have an Heat source as well. :)

Hello again GJ.

Just a small update here before Christmas :)

Since last update, I moved the Nissan into the workshop. I wanted to mount the 2-post lift(Stenhoej) into the floor. But first I wanted to see how much space I got around it.
My Nissan got quite a long front end, so if it fits with this one, it will fit with most of the cars im doing. I wanted to have a minimum of 1meter around it.

Next Maria(GF) ordered me to get rid of the textyl(underbody coat)
I had about 300kg, and I will never get used that much during my lifetime :)
So we agreed that I could keep as much as 200kg :bounce:
It was a very messy job. and because I didnt use the valve in the button of the tank is, that there was some water and misc in the oil. I only want the good stuff

The last two evenings I used on sorting out bolts and nuts. A lot of it is some useless sizes, and I really dont got the space for just keeping this. So I put the most needed in storage boxes, and now I just have to find a good way to store this. (Im working on it; Drivesitfar) :)

I think that was all for this time.
Now some pictures.

After moving the Nissan, I got some free space in the garage. So I can get rid of all the wood and insulation from the workshop.

My Nissan in place. Cant wait to get it started :)

About 1 meter space to getting around the car while it's on the lift.

Half of the engine is missing. Im about to upgrade it with Garrett 3076GT turbo + more. Goal is 500whp with NOS.

300kg of black gold. Nasty sticky stuff.

This was 2 days ago, and I still stink of oil.

In Denmark we use salt to melt the ice on roads during the winter. Salt+water+O2+Cheap cars is not good.

I hope in the future I can track everything I got in my garage. So if I dont have any M10 Nuts, I can order it right away. This was my workbench for several hours today :)

All the leftovers.

This is everything from M5 to M12

This is for the most used stuff... Fuses, bulbs, nuts, clips and so on.

The next couple of days I might be using on family. And if I got time, the garage REALLY needs a clean up :)

Have fun guys.

Happy new year everybody.

FINALLY.......

Today my good friend and work collegue came and insulated the ceiling with paper wool.

For a year ago he owned a insulation machine, but still have access to it. Lucky for me. :)

We insulated the ceiling with ISOCELL paper wool.
Near the walls we applied 120mm of insulation (5 inch)
Near the center of the ceiling it got a layer of 200-300mm (8-12inch)

After all... I think the result is great. The first section my bud Kim insulated for me, just to instruct me. Then it was time for me to get dirty. (And dusty)

Here is why I like paper wool:

Using paper wool you dont need to have a vapour barrier. But it is a good thing to have it anyway.

And have a look at these:

With insulations batts:

With paper wool:

Here is some pictures of todays work. :willy_nil

My work mate Kim

We only had to take down one ceiling plate to insulate one section.

My turn to insulate. This was the last section, so we just emptied the machine. So it got about 300mm (12inch)

Insulation material

Further more. Today I got a new garden tractor.
It have been stored in a old barn for the last 35-40years. Last time it was used was 25years ago.

It only needed new gasoline, then it was running nearly perfect.
I think it is very cute, and seems very solid.

Good evening from Denmark.

I like it :) How did the driveway end up?

Hi Andy.

I will say I'm very pleased with it. But it cost 3 times more than I expected. :)
But we could not live with the old driveway.

When buying a house you have some kind of number in your head. How much will this project cost?
I just learned you have to multiply with 1.5 as minimum :lol_hitti

Yes in deed :O Do you have a pic from here with it finished? :)

DSCN0014_zpsd2sj7fuk.jpg

I dont have any good pictures when the weather was good.

But I just took one today.
For the last 2 weeks Denmark have been covered in Snow. Down to -15 degree C
Thats why I haven't done any progress in the workshop :) The tempeture inside is just above 0 degree C.

As requested

Down from the road

From distance

When weather gets better, I will spend more time in the workshop.

Rene: AGREED that your new driveway looks and is amazing. Congrats on doing it right and digging out the swamp first.

The other garage in front of your house a neighbor's? How many square feet is your house? Then im guessing about 1000 square foot attached and another 800 square foot detached garages. How many acres. Dont envy the insulating or that black undercoating but all will help save you a ton.

Main house is 514squaremeters (5532squarefeet)
Workshop is 120m2 (1300squarefeet)
Car garage is 45m2 (490squarefeet)

But my workshop is about to get a bit smaller, because of we need an other heatsource in our house.
At the moment we got a heatpump running on earth pipes. (1200meters of pipes in the garden)
It makes up to 38C water, and thats not enough for heating during the winter.
Furthermore it uses electricity, and in Denmark there is a LOT of taxes on electricity. 1 kwh is about 2 danish krones (0.3USD)
The heatpump makes 3.3 kwh on each kwh electricity. Last year I used electricity for about 6000USD, and thats about to get higher, because we dont heat all the house at the moment

My girlfriend likes it warm inside the house, and for the last two weeks the weather in Denmark have been very cold. So it was only possible to heat up to 13-17degree C inside :)

I found a solution with a wood chip stove, and that should be enough for heating the household and the garage. That makes it a bit more pleasent to work during the winter :)

We have the same size of both workshop and car garage, what are the odds? :p

But your house is 314 m2 bigger than ours, hehe :)

Here in Sweden I think we pay about 0.80 SEK (0.8 of 1 swedish krona) per 1 kwh, didn't know it was such a big difference.

Skål :)

your place is looking great. any pics of the house interior? at 5532 sq. feet that is a mcmansion! the drive is very nice. did your neighbor help pay for part of it? also your electric rate is way expensive. we pay $.113 per kwh here. I can understand the 16" insulation reg. good luck with everything.

Hi all...

Very long time since last update.

So much have been going on.!
Our company just started up the Blade-inspection again. So his means a lot of working hours for me :)

My sparetime have been used inside the house. 1st. floor is now 90% done :) Took 3 month.

Ongoin projects at the moment:
Im getting married this september, and my to do list just build up every day. :)
The garden(the big one) is under construction aswell.
New heating source.

I only got a few new pictures since last update.
Have a look

How it is at the moment

New shelves, way more robust than the old once.

New tools: Nearly complete

The main building just got painted. This was highly needed. 8 years since last time. Love the result.

And finally, the rest of my driveway (around 800m3) needed to go some where, so I just distributed it all over my coming garden. This adds about 10-20cm of layer.
This sould be finish in about a month. Hopefully with new grass within 3months :)

Me: Going home in 2 days :)

Take care all...
I hope I can come with more updates within a month.

RENE: feel free to show updates of the remodeling going on inside your home because we all seem to need to do that maybe more than we do our garages. if you have time to take pictures and post them i (we) would all appreciate that.

your shop looks amazing and nice upgrades on the overloaded shelving you had before.

if you have time to take a few pictures from the tops of towers to post on your thread to give us an idea of how you spend your day that would be cool too. also so you can post a little more often because everything you've done so far is top notch.

congrats on setting the date and sounds like she's the ONE.

good luck

OOhhhhhhh.... Soooo long time since last update.

A lot has going on since last update. However, not so much time spend on the garage.

All in all, it seems like the miss at home, demands more time spend on the house, than the garage :)
And i cannot blame her, since im working long days and weekends in the company. Meaning not so much time for family.

Drivesitfar:
Regarding honeymoon, this was a bit delayed. Just came home from South Florida a week ago. (12days in US) Visiting a old collegue that have moved to Miami. He have a paint shop over there now.
Also visited orlando.

Regarding rest of questions: Images of rest of house coming later :)

Since last time I have been worked on

  • The garden - New lawn have been made, quite a difficult job, since they soil is very unstable.
  • New tools in workshop - Normally when I do cars for fiends, family and my self, if I need anything, I buy it. So after getting paid for a job, I haven't got that much money out of it, but then the tools are paid

  • 3 more bedrooms made - For upcoming children.
  • Electric work inside the house - My wife seems unhappy with only power in half of the house.
  • Terrace - Still ongoing. Maybe I post images of the build of this.
  • Undercoated between 5-7 cars with rust protection - this is just a mess!!! But easy money.
  • Garage heating system - Air/Air heat pump
  • Approx 12hr work on the 200sx (180sx) Need new coilovers, big brakes, turbo install(GT30), new manifold tig welded.

Enough smalltalk.

Images below. :)

Current project. This just takes SOoooo much time
Every small cobblestone is between 8 to 10cm and these have are just so freaking annoying to set. NEVER AGAIN.
I can still hear myself convince my wife about doing this our self. We can save 2000-3000USD on this by doing it our self:p
Build up by 20cm stabile gravel, and 20cm sand.
