A Friday public holiday for a football game played on a Saturday..........................never mind...................

Today, I took the opportunity to step back in times.......................

Sorry, I couldn't resist! :D

I have always said that the Mustang is a blank canvas for enthusiasts to make their own. But the greater beauty of the Mustang is the massive aftermarket sector that caters to those who want to customize their Mustang and create something unique. For me, I love the simplicity of the GT in its standard form, letting the lines and form factor speak for themselves. That said, I have tinkered with a few things to create that OEM+ look. For the most part, I stayed OEM by using Ford Performance parts, in other cases I used OEM-looking parts.

Some of those parts will remain, mainly because I have no use for them on the new car. The oil separator won't fit the S650, likewise the coolant tank cover and AEM filter. The dead pedal is a one-time application. The Borla exhaust will stay, even though I still have the original.............which I have no idea what to do with, scrap metal?

IMG-1600.jpg

IMG_5038.jpg

IMG_5056.jpg

IMG_5069.jpg

n.jpg

However, there are two things that I wanted to remove from the car prior to trade, the wheels and blue coil covers.

The coil covers are from Ford Performance and are simply to fit and remove. These won't fit later S550 or S650 engines because of the DI hardware Ford uses, so I will likely put them on the XR8. I know blue clashes against red, but I actually liked it.

gt50103.jpg

gt50105.jpg

I kept the grey originals, so back to stock they go.................

IMG-1428.jpg

The Ford Performance HP wheels cost me a fortune to import, only for them to appear via the aftermarket vendors a few months later. These are based on the wheel design Ford offered with the US-only PP2 package. Available in four widths, I went with the same spec Ford used on the R-Spec, 9.5-inch fronts with 255/40/R19 tyres, and 10.0-inch rears with 275/40/R19. The Michelin PS4S tyres I insisted on transformed the car.

IMG-9418.jpg

IMG-9426.jpg

IMG-9712.jpg

The key benefit with these wheels was how much easier they were to clean! I later also added black lugs to better blend into the wheel, a very simple change that transformed the look of the car.

IMG_5076.jpg

IMG_5093.jpg

Before -

IMG_5078.jpg

After -

IMG_5096.jpg

I'm not sure what I will do with the HP wheels, I'm toying with putting them on the S650 but I'm sort of over black wheels. I may end up selling them separately. In any case, they cost me too much to just trade them in at the dealer. I kept the PP1 wheels, so back on they went.

Retrieved from storage -

IMG-9921.jpg

IMG-9919.jpg

The PP1 wheels were wiped of dust with ONR, it was then out with the tools and the jack. The fronts were extremely difficult to remove from the hub, taking way longer than anticipated.

IMG-1429.jpg

IMG-1434.jpg

IMG-1436.jpg

Shout out to these Koken lug sockets, very nicely made and they look cool as well. The plastic outer sheath is also removable with replacements available if needed in the future. I'll point out that I didn't use the impact to break these lugs, I was only using it to zip them off quickly after using a breaker bar.

IMG-1441.jpg

The black lugs I will use on the S650, the old jacket-style chrome units go back on the car, torqued to the 150 ft-lbs / 203 Nm. I've said this a few times, but if you are looking for a good torque wrench, these Wera units are the bomb!

IMG-1443.jpg

The final step, some Armour Detail Supply Tire+ to freshen up the OE fit Pirelli's................

IMG-1456.jpg

IMG-1451.jpg

Despite sitting undriven, I gave HP wheels a quick clean and scrubbed the tyres with Carpro ReTyre. It was then into storage until I decide what to do with them.

IMG-1448.jpg

I have to say, it felt somewhat sad to put the old PP1 wheels and chrome lugs back on, almost like it isn't my car anymore. The HP wheels gave the car a boost in aggression and separated it from the rest of the Mustang GT's on the road.

I have had more than two years to say goodby to this car. When I first placed the deposit for a S650 back in September 2022, I wasn't ready to part ways with the car. But two years later, I think I have reached a point where I am content letting it go. I had a list of things to do before saying goodby to this car, which is now nearly completed. Just one task remains..............................

When I put the new wheels on the car and re-used the chrome lugs, all I got was people telling me to get some black ones. At the time, it didn't really bother me. In the end, knowing those two-piece lugs that Ford use have a tendency to swell and prevent removal, I bit the bullet and bought a set of solid black lugs. Within seconds of them going on, I was shocked at how much of a difference they made.

Did a little shopping today..........................

IMG-1471.jpg

While some of those I already had in the cabinet, some are additions that will be used for review purposes.

It would be at least 22 years since I used the blue ArmorAll Car Wash. Now, ArmorAll offer a range of soaps these days, but the classic blue Car Wash is the common and is always stocked in supermarkets and automotive stores. For under $9.00 for a 1000ml bottle, I thought it was worth a trip down memory lane.

IMG-1474.jpg

Removing the cap for a quick whiff, I was instantly transported back to my teenage years. On weekend summer evenings, I would be out in my thongs, bucket and sponge in hand washing my parents cars in the driveway. I had no idea what I was doing, or that it would lead to an extremely expensive and all-consuming hobby in adulthood.

From the product description -

Your car’s delicate finish is too important to trust to household products like dish soaps, which may contain harsh surfactants that can strip your vehicle’s wax protection.

And yes, I was using dish soap prior to using this product. 🤦

Also interesting to see that for foam cannons, ArmorAll recommend using 200ml of soap to 800ml of water in the cannister. So, it will be interesting to see what sort of foam it produces. For context, I can get shaving cream foam from 80ml of Carpro Reset or 100ml of NV Snow.

But that scent! It's not a scent I can describe, or one that I would say is transcendent like Reset or GSF either. But the blue ArmorAll Car Wash so vividly recognizable to me, a scent that transports me back to my teenage years washing cars.

We have seen an explosion of choice when it comes to detailing products over the last 20+ years, not to mention the advancements made in chemistry technology. But here we are in 2024, and this ArmorAll Car Wash is remarkably unchanged from the stuff I was using all those years ago. The scent, the bottle design, the price, even the label is basically the same!

Far out. Some products from the past.
At the moment I’m using Adam’s Car shampoo. When that runs out I will be trying something different. Don’t know what yet will go back on your posts and have a look.

I really like the Adam's soaps, especially Mega Foam. I just wish they weren't as expensive in this country, $179.99 for a gallon of Mega Foam is outrageous. I also find the local Adam's website is lacking in consistency. At the moment, you can get the 473ml bottle of the blue Car Shampoo, but no gallon size. They have also deleted a number of other products (inc the lovely Slick and Slide), or price them out of contention (the brilliant rubber cleaner).

For soap recommendations, I have a few..................................

Shine Supply Shift - this brand is supplied by B&B Blending, which is owned by Adam's. So, I suspect this is mostly likely the same as the blue Car Shampoo, colored green and coconut scented. Great soap, smells amazing, foams well, super slick.

IMG-5621.jpg

NV Snow - not only is this soap super slick, super foamy, and cleans extremely well, it's supremely good value too. Subtle but pleasant fragrance. The runnier consistency also makes it easier to dispense than the thick Adam's and Shine Supply.

IMG-4557.jpg

Carpro Reset - don't let the name fool you, this is not the strip wash many people think it is. Measuring pH neutral, Reset is probably the best soap money can buy. Arguably the slickest out there, foams well, cleans well, smells amazing. It's higher price offset by the more concentrated formulation. I've found it to foam down to 80ml in the foam cannon, where you would be doing 100 to 150ml of other soaps.

IMG-4551.jpg

The following are soaps I love using, but are not cost effective -

- Koch Chemie GSF
- DIY Detail Incredible Suds
- Opti-coat M-Wash
- Ethos Foam Party (another B&B blended soap, probably Adam's Mega Foam)

The following I would avoid -

- P&S Pearl (doesn't foam, so-so slickness, overall a ho-hum product)
- Stjarnagloss Sno (nice scent, bad at everything else)
- Koch Chemie AS (doesn't foam, boring scent)
- Mirch anything (terrible products)
- 3D Pink (too thick to pour, doesn't foam, very average product)

Would love to hear what you go with.

Thanks mate. I don’t know but you have given me some time to look at some products thanks. Hopefully there will be some sales on soon and then I will buy.
I don’t use a foam guns even though I have them. Just can’t be bothered getting the pressure washer out.
I watch Matt put a pressure washer up in his new house and thought that might be alright for me for now.

I like the Comet, it's a very neat, all-in-one wall mount solution. Sadly, its not available in Australia though.

The closest (quality) alternative would be one of the Big Boi packages.

Ok thanks. I do like the look of that.
The only thing with the Big Boi Pro machines is you will likely need a 15-amp circuit, similar situation with the Kranzle KHD-10.

The AR680 also comes in a similar setup -

The other thing you could do would be to make up a detailing cart with a pressure washer and hose reel mounted to it. All you do is wheel it out, plug it in. The AR680, Kranzle KHD-7 or K-1050, or the Active 2.0 would be ideal.

pwc102.jpg

pwc103.jpg

pwc107.jpg

pwc105.jpg

Or, go for the 911 GT3 of pressure washers. When I did my wall mount setup, I decided to keep my K1152, such a brilliant machine.

And yeah, I know, expensive. But if it's something you love doing, spending money on quality makes the process more enjoyable. Buy once, cry once. Or, buy twice and cry twice...................................ah well, I had fun, that's the main thing.

Interested to see what you think of the Meguiars and AutoGlym as those are what I have been using lately.
My only experience with an Autoglym soap was way back in 2008, it put me off their soaps for more than 16-years. The below is lifted from a thread I posted elsewhere -

Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner – The single worst soap I have ever used, and one of the worst detailing products I have had the displeasure of spending money on. No suds, no lubrication, no cleaning ability. This stuff is utter garbage, run don’t walk from this pathetic product.

Lubrication – 2/10
Cleaning Ability 1/10
Scent – Can’t remember LOL
PH Level – 7.5
Consistency - Thin
Overall Rating – 1/10

For my return, I grabbed the Autoglym Foaming Car Wash to see how things have progressed. On first acquaintance, it smells delightful, a cherry scent not unlike Gtechniq G-Wash. Interested to see how this soap performs.

As for the Meguiar's, in addition to the Gold Class and Hyper Wash pictured earlier, I have two others I had to order as they weren't available at the local store. All of them I have used in the past and wasn't unhappy with them, just that newer and higher performing soaps have surfaced since these Megs products hit the market. I guess they see no need to change things if people still buy the product.

Sanity detailing today............................

The XR8 was up first. Tyres cleaned with Wise Guy, wheels and body washed with Carpro Reset. After drying, I went over the tyres with Tarminator to give them a reset, then dressed with ADS Tire+.

But its the Amplify I want to focus on. Not sure why, but I have struggled with streaking on this car for a quite a while now, especially on the hood. And that covers a wide range of products including polymer spray sealants, ceramic spray detailer/sealants, simple quick detailers, even a rinse-less wash.

In recent times, I've had nothing but good things to say about ADS Amplify, especially in relation to its ability to wipe on and flash away to a streak-free finish. Using it on the XR8 was going to be its biggest challenge though. So, you can imagine how pleased I am knowing that Amplify passed this test and delivered a streak free finish on the XR8 for first time in ages. So, I used it on the paint, glass, door jambs, engine bay, wheels and exhaust tips.

IMG-1483.jpg

IMG-1487.jpg

Moving onto the Ranger, I began the testing and reassessing of a batch of box-store soaps.

IMG-1471.jpg

The first to try however is a soap I've always wondered about but never took the plunge.....................

IMG-1491.jpg

(Sorry for the US readers, as far as I know, this is not a brand offered outside of Australia/New Zealand. They are sold through large automotive chain stores, think of them like Adam's or Autoglym, not the absolute best, but a rung or two above Turtle Wax, Mothers ect. Their main claim to fame is the smutty product names such as Wet Dreams, Three-Way, Happy Ending, The Little Chubby, The Little-Stiffy, Blue Ball Big Daddy and Far-Cough.)

In the past, I guess I discounted Bowden's Nanolicious because of the conditioning agents used in the formula. Personally, I prefer a soap that is used purely for lubrication and cleaning purposes, leaving the "conditioning" or gloss enhancement to the drying aid step. However, Bowdens insist that Nanolicious is safe for ceramic coatings, so I was keen to see how that would pan out.

After it was mentioned in my soap thread, I was expecting Nanolicious to be a low foaming product. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it did..................

IMG-1495.jpg

IMG-1497.jpg

IMG-1500.jpg

That looks like some pretty decent foam to me. Under the wash pad, Nanolicious is decently slick, cleans well and rinses freely. Keep in mind I was using this after the transcendent Carpro Reset, but overall, Nanolicious didn't disappoint. The scent? It's pleasant but forgettable. I would love to infiltrate the likes of Bowden's and Meguiars to freshen up their scent pallets, I guess they stick with subtle scents to offend no-one, but please no-one in the process.

Next up, I'm actually looking forward to taking a trip down memory lane by re-trying the very first car wash soap I ever used...........................

Clivia Miniata doing their thing......................

IMG-1460.jpg

IMG-1462.jpg

The cultural information regarding Clivia suggests that these plants can be grown in full sun. However, in areas where I live, the summer sun would be too harsh, and without the cover provided by a tree or patio, they will burn with exposure to frost. A lot of people will have these potted so they can be moved to suit the weather conditions. They are otherwise best planted under established trees to provide the necessary cover during the cold months. Even so, you can see some burnt foliage after a frosty winter just gone.

The other thing to note with Clivia is their toxicity to animals. If ingested, the bulb in particular, Clivia is toxic to both cats and dogs, potentially causing symptoms such as vomiting, low blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmia.

This website has a good listing of plants known to be toxic to animals -

https://bloominghaus.com/news/poiso... Lily – toxic to cats, toxic part of the plant).

More soap testing today, the Jaguar and Wildtrak the test subjects.

First up, a quick wash of the Jaguar, the soap chosen here being Autoglym Foaming Car Wash.

IMG-1503.jpg

After a quick sniff of this soap, I was reminded of the cherry scented Gtechniq G-Wash. However, where G-Wash is a thoroughly competent soap, this stuff is so thoroughly disappointing! These shots taken literally seconds after application...................

IMG-1506.jpg

IMG-1504.jpg

I'm sorry, but if you are going to label a product as a "foaming car wash", it ****** well better do just that! I was as generous with my dose rate as I normally am, as in more is better, I even added more after using it to clean the wheels to no improvement. I think its obvious in those images that is soapy water and not "foam". Sure, its decently slick but I just can't get past it not foaming despite its claim. This soap joins a line of thoroughly average to downright horrible Autoglym products that I have used.

Unlike US and AUS tastes, the UK market seems fixated on having separate soaps for pre-washing and bucket washing. I could understand that if the products actually did what they intended to do, but apart from the likes of Bilt Hamber, I have yet to see a true benefit to this approach.

Looking at the Autoglym website, they actually offer five different soaps with far too much product overlap. Polar Blast is supposed to be their pre-wash option, but being pH neutral, I don't see how this stuff would do squat! They then have a Polar Wash, which bizarrely is NOT pH neutral. I don't get! And I suspect their typical customer base doesn't either, which in turn means they just keep buying this stuff.

https://www.autoglym.com.au/products/bodywork/clean

Considering Foaming Car Wash doesn't actually foam, I don't see why it exists alongside the also truly awful Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner, or the Polar Blast/Wash duo. I don't think I will even use this to clean the bins, it will go straight in there, bottle and all. Autoglym would be best off starting from scratch and putting their resources into making two great soaps rather than five thoroughly average ones; an alkaline pre-wash soap that foams, and a pH neutral wash soap that ALSO foams.

Next up, ArmorAll Car Wash for a quick exterior wash on the Wildtrak.

This was the very first car soap I used, way back in the early 2000's washing my parent's cars in the driveway. So much has changed since then, but this stuff is remarkable for being exactly same as it was when I was a teenager with no clue what I was doing. Same colour, same bottle, almost the same label, same scent, pretty much the same price too.

IMG-1511.jpg

IMG-1513.jpg

As you can see, this stuff actually foams, it also hangs on throughout the wash rather than breaking down, which may or may not be seen as a positive. Rinsing afterwards seemed pretty good too. However, ArmorAll suggests a very rich dose rate on this soap, so the lack of concentration means you use waaaaay more per vehicle. It also has very little lubrication.

And so, this is where your money goes when buying a mid to high end soap, a more concentrated formulation and a superior user experience. For the $7.00 I paid for this stuff, I guess complaining about those two aspects is redundant. However, it has provided me a valuable insight into the difference between a $7.00 soap and a $45.00 soap of the same quantity.

Have you tried out any interior products for odor control? My truck sits for weeks at a time and can have a musty interior smell. I've tried a few products, but they seem to be overpowering air fresheners. I am really looking for a more neutral odor eliminator.

Thanks!

Thank you for confirming my thoughts on the AutoGlym, I mostly used a foam cannon on a garden hose, so thought that may have been the issue, but it seems the soap just isn't worth anything.

My latest article went live earlier this week, a range overview of the Armour Detail Supply maintenance line.

IMG-0760.jpg

From the moment I tried their wheel coating late last year, the Armour Detail Supply brand captured my attention. As I discovered more about the brand, I knew these were products I wanted to try. When Detailing Shed announced they would be the Australian distributor for ADS, I was excited to get my hands on the entire lineup. The coatings launched first earlier this year, followed a few months later by the maintenance line.

Going off the comments I had been reading about ADS in the US, I knew I wanted to try every product they make. During a detailing therapy session, I remember lining them all up, then started grabbing one after the other as I worked around the car. I'm at the point now where I can tell within 30 seconds if a product is good or not. Each ADS product instantly impressed!

What impressed me most of all was how consistently great the entire lineup is. For any given brand, they will have one or two truly great products with the rest being average at best. ASD on the other hand sit at the top tiers for each segment they play in.

Still, a few key products rise to the top. Pilot is my absolute favorite interior cleaner/detailer, Amplify I can't get enough of..............I have already re-ordered both! I love Tire+, it seems to have just the right amount of enhancement without sickly gloss. And Hero rinse-less wash is delightful to use, Ceramic Spray Sealant the easiest of it's type to apply.

Full Disclosure -

While I have authored the above article, the "DS User Notes" are my own, I bought all of those products with my own money. I get no financial credit if you do go on the buy some of these products from Detailing Shed, but you will be supporting a passionate Australian company.

For transparency, you can also buy ADS products from AutoBuff in Melbourne. From my interactions, they are likewise a great company to deal with.

I was looking for a solution to the cart my Simpson pressure washer came with, as I'm 6'2" and try to use/build things closer to an ideal working height for me (aka I'm too lazy to be bending down/over working on stuff all the time). I modified a Harbor Freight utility cart to work as a pressure washing cart. I still have to accessorize it with brush and bottle holders, but for now it works great.

D.F.B have you seen Blahst adds going around. Apparently they are Australian made or assembled here in Australia.

Yeah, I've seen their adds pop up on social media. Blahst is an Australian owned and operated business, the products also designed in Australia, but the machines would be made in China.

"...............Designed in Australia and proudly 100% Australian-owned.............."

I really like the integrated all-in-one design of the pressure washer, the 18m hose perfectly sized and the inclusion of changeable non-proprietary fittings is pleasing.

Some figures off their website -

- Max pressure 1950 PSI,
- Rated pressure 1750 PSI

- Rated flow 6L/min
- Max flow 8L/min

The "rated" flow is a bit lean, the "max" flow would probably be without a nozzle attached. A similarly priced Karcher will be doing 7 to 8.3 L/min, but obviously without the integration and quick connect fittings offered by the Blahst. You could dial up the flow and reduce the pressure down to about 1200 - 1500 psi by opening up the nozzle orifices.

I would easily take the Blahst over the similar concept Giraffe stuff. Those things are overpriced and very lean for flow, only 4.9 L/min. The concept is good, but the execution and customer support is lacking, I've read multiple complaints over Australian customers placing and paying for orders and have been left waiting months without reply, the only way they got a response was by calling them out on social media. The only ones happy with the Giraffe are social media influencers who were sent a free unit to "review", then have the cheek to state that they are giving their "honest, unbiased opinion". Sure they are.

I know I might have some bias, but this video shows why your money is better spent elsewhere.

Two additional box-store soap contenders........................

IMG-1521.jpg

I nearly took out my nostrils giving the Soft Wash a quick whiff, that cherry scent is STRONG!

The NXT? Well, that takes me back to the late 2000's and my FG XR6. Before taking delivery of it in June 2008, I went on a car care binge by "upgrading" to Autoglym, in particular Super Resin Polish (a mild polish with a LOT of fillers), Extra Gloss Protection (a liquid sealant used on top of SRP), and Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner. The SRP and EGP stayed with me for a while, but the shampoo was exceptionally terrible.

Enter Meguiar's then new NXT 2.0 lineup. Three products made up the NXT 2.0 line, a synthetic liquid sealant called Tech Wax 2.0, a paste wax also called Tech Wax 2.0, and a shampoo. Meguiar's went all out on these products, the purple colouring linked them together, as did the grape scent and special cardboard packaging. Even the foam applicators were purple.

I ended up using the NXT 2.0 Tech Wax paste on the XR6 for many years. From what I can tell, that stuff was also full of fillers and had a mild abrasive in it. It's main claim to fame was the "stunning wet-look shine". Looking back, I seem to remember Tech Wax 2.0 paste required plenty of effort to apply, plenty of effort to buff off. In the end, I replaced it with the delightful Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant. Since then, the liquid Tech Wax and shampoo remain on sale, but the paste wax is long gone.

In terms of the soap, this was looong before my foray into foam cannons. As such, I always appreciated the ultra-sudsy formula which hung around throughout the duration of the wash. Claims of it "refreshing paint protection" and "synthetic lubricating oils" suggests a soap full of conditioning agents and fillers. The grape scent takes me back, just like the ArmorAll Car Wash from last week. I'm also keen to see how this soap fares against the benchmark soaps on the market.

Thinking this through, I do wonder where NXT Car Wash sits with other Meguiars soaps. Meguiar's offer soaps in consumer friendly and professional user formats. So, which of the consumer soaps listed here matches up with the Detailer pro range, as in Soft Wash, NXT and Gold Class vs Hyper Wash, Shampoo+ and Citrus Blast Wash & Wax?

More big-box store soap testing with two additional contenders arriving yesterday. The irony here being that I had to order these two as the local Repco doesn't stock them.

IMG-1518.jpg

The purple NXT is a soap from my past, used on my XR6 for many years. The pink Soft Wash Gel I have only had a brief encounter with, from memory my sister was using for short while. Meguiar's offer a huge range of soaps with far too much product overlap. It also appears that certain soaps are region specific, NXT and Soft Wash Gel don't appear to be sold in the USA for example.

Soft Wash Gel is Meguiar's entry level soap in Australia and is often on sale. Strangely, Repco have it at $21.00 for 473ml, yet Meguiar's (terrible) official website has it listed at $19.99 RRP. And if you Google search it, you will find a range of prices including $11.99, $13.95 and $15.99. In other words, don't pay full retail on it.

The first thing you notice is the strong cherry scent and the ultra-thick gel-like consistency. That thick consistency is common to every Meguiar's soap I have ever used, but then, their soaps have been left unchanged for decades. Soft Wash Gel is pH neutral and contains "conditioners with optical brighteners to enhance the brilliance and gloss of your paint finish."

IMG-1524.jpg

I'm fairly sure Meguiar's never intended for Soft Wash Gel to be used in a foam cannon, but that didn't stop me from seeing how it performed. The gloopy consistency does make it harder to mix in the foam cannon cannister, but then it's not alone in that regard, Adam's blue soap is the same.

Foam quality is not its strong suit, not that I'm surprised by that. While the foam is on the thin side, its considerably better than the Autoglym junk I tried last week. However, Soft Wash Gel is an excellent bucket soap, it produces plenty of suds that hold on throughout the wash. Under the wash mitt, its nowhere near as slick as my current benchmark, Carpro Reset. Cleaning ability is fair (yes, the Ranger was dirty this week, I promise), the rinse off easy enough.

Like the ArmorAll soap from last week, Soft Wash Gel serves a purpose but is not for the detailing enthusiast. For the price, I would actually give the ArmorAll the win as its way better value for money being more than half the price for a larger 1000ml bottle.

For me, the biggest problem with Soft Wash Gel is that a 500ml bottle of Carpro Reset is only $5.00 more expensive when comparing RRP's. Reset is easier to pour, is considerably slicker, produces lovely thick foam, and is more concentrated so the extra $5.00 cancels itself out.

Up next, I'll be reacquainting myself with NXT and Gold Class.

The past week has been terrible, situations I never, ever want to experience again. You know, I think we all know about our own foibles and character quirks, but it's never pleasant to have them aggressively thrown in your face in front of your peers. I strongly believe a person's natural character traits are virtually impossible to change, they can be suppressed but there is always a default mode. It's foolish to expect or demand that someone changes their natural traits for someone else's benefit, it becomes exhausting for all involved trying to swim against the tide. I have some decisions to make during the next three months.

You're appreciated here if that helps at all

Just signed up for the Advanced Paint Correction class at Waxit on the 28th of November.

This is something I've wanted to do for a while now, so with some spare time coming up, it was now or never. I've been polishing self-taught for more than a decade, so I sidestepped the entry level Random Orbit Clinic with the idea of taking my skills to the next level. Classes are run in groups of five and are taught by the legendary Sandro from Car Craft Auto Detailing, he has the best detailing Youtube channel in Australia. I've never had any formal training when it comes to detailing, it's all been self-taught, so I'm both nervous and exited.

Well...............................

IMG-1544.jpg

The last car I had serviced by the local Ford dealer was a deal breaker. I put a collective of 6 cars through there, including the Jaguar as they are also a JLR dealer. The screw up with the battery was one thing, but the stuff I found in the weeks afterwards were the final straw. If it wasn't for the fact I was selling the Mustang, I would have been devastated.

So, if a "factory trained technician" can screw up a basic oil change, then I can't be any worse at the job. I have no problem paying the premium price for a dealer to look after my cars if that is actually what happens. But to have cars handed back to me in worse condition than they were when I dropped them off, that's a redundant practice. Frankly, I don't know why I tolerated it for so long. I know I'm picky, but it's not unreasonable to expect a job to be done properly.

From now on, I'll supply the parts and consumables and either do it my ****** self, or I have a contact for a mobile mechanic if something is beyond my abilities. Above is $240 in parts spent online and not through their parts department, delivered in less than 48 hours.

I'm feeling a mixture of smugness, satisfaction and apprehension over this.

Just think of all the tools to do your own maintenance you'll be able to buy with all the money you save doing your own maintenance. Garage math!
Just think how nice it would be to have a lift you could use for maintenance and detailing ;)

Two years in the making.......................3 months leave started at 5.01pm this afternoon. I was waiting for the car to arrive before going on leave, but after what happened last week, I’ve actually pulled the pin on it. Even if the car doesn’t arrive next week, I’ll have at least unwound and calmed down a little.

The last two weeks have been murder, and in the last week I've been plagued by constant headaches caused by an out of spec spine..............and most likely the stress. I should be elated but I'm so ****** exhausted and my head is still thumping that it's going to take a while to unwind.

I'd have done a lift by now if I had the ceiling height in my garage.

This morning, I sold off my Stihl KM56 RC-E Combi powerhead, along with the line trimmer, hedge trimmer and edger attachments.

esd.jpg

I've had this for many years, bought mainly for the extended reach ability of the hedge trimmer attachment. The edger only got used once as I picked up an Atom Edger for cheap shortly after. The line trimmer was used for a while as my main trimmer, my first foray into straight-shaft trimming.

The main problem with this machine was the weight, even with the basic line trimmer attachment. In hedge trimmer mode, it took a lot of upper body strength to balance.............while standing stretched out on a ladder.........not nice! The line trimmer was poorly balanced, that metal sheath with the locking screw lever put too much weight in the middle of the shaft, so it never felt natural and again caused a lot of upper body strain. This is not unique to Stihl, all multi-tool units are like this.

km56101.jpg

I stopped using this machine when I bought a Husqvarna 522L, THE BEST lawn maintenance trimmer on the market, powerful enough but extremely light and with an anti-vibration handle. Prior to the 522L, I was getting pins and needles in my hands during and after using a line trimmer, but that stopped after getting the Husqvarna. I was also less fatigued in my shoulders after a day on the tools.

IMG_2177.jpg

Hedge trimmers were also giving me the pins and needles, including my old Stihl HS 45 (which will be up for sale soon too, just have to refresh the fuel system) and the above-mentioned pole hedger. This stopped after going battery powered.

I kept the KM56 RC-E mainly as a backup line trimmer, but other than the occasional run on my own lawns, or lending it to my father, it was just sitting taking up space. While I sold it off cheap, I'm happy to have purged a rarely used tool. And..............I have some spare cash to buy something else...................

I'm also planning to sell off the above-mentioned Stihl HS 45 hedge trimmer, it has sat unused since I got a battery powered HSA 56 in November 2018. Couldn't be happier about that because petrol powered hedge trimmers ****!

I'm also going to sell off my Bushranger 53AH6IMSP mower.

While I'll be sad to let it go, I haven't used it since getting the Victa Commercial. I'll miss the efficiency and smoothness of the Honda GXV-160, the 3-speed gearbox made it more versatile, and it was built like a tank! But it was a beast to manhandle, and the narrow discharge chute was its main limiting factor. While it was fine in most cases, on thick summer growth Kikuyu, it really struggled in terms of chute blockages. At the time though, it was the best available to me.
