If you take a fine miniature center punch you can many time catch the outer edge and drive the rim counter clockwise and they will back out enough to then grab with pliers and finish the job. That is what I did with my delta dp220.

Here are some pictures of the labels on it. I'm going to try to pull them off with the tricks here.

Actually, I was able to get all 3 off pretty easily, the North American Aviation one is brok the drive screws off of though. I'm debating leaving it off or drilling new holes to put it back on

So I've got the entire press disassembled, the cast iron parts (minus the head because I don't want to damage the labels) are in an electrolysis bath. After replacing the start capacitor, I found that the motor that came with it needed bearings and other work. I just picked up a 1.5hp dayton 56 frame for $60 to replace it.
From what I see in the Delta catalog, the largest recommended motor had a 1/2 hp Rating. 1.5hp will potential damage your drill press should a drill bit grab, etc. - especially with the low speed extea pulley option.

Sorry but I don't see a scenario where a stuck drill bit can damage the DP. Drill bits can get stuck all the time and when that happens they usually slip in the chuck or cause the belt to slip in the pulley.

The Delta catalog probably listed 1/2 HP as the largest they offered. Anything higher is just overkill for that model DP.

However with a large motor and large bits it's extra important to secure your work.

I was kindof under this same impression, also taking into account that the bits will typically be the "weak link". Im planning on buying a nice x y clamp/table for it once I'm all finished with the resto.

With modern horsepower inflation in place, is 1-1/2 hp really more than a vintage 1/2 hp? I mean, my shop vac claims 6hp.

Sorry, I have damaged an Atlas drill press with the factory slow speed add-on pulley with a 1/2hp motor stuck drilling steel with a the drill press at its lowest speed. It damaged the spindle pulley to spindle interface. I was rather annoyed and I would have not expected that either.

There is a lot of that inflation going around.😁

In this case, the motor current does look in the ballpark of what I would expect for a 1.5hp motor

It's a bit light. The original 1/2hp drew 7.8 @ 115, so the draw is a little less than double. I'd assume the new motor makes around 3/4 to 1 hp

1 HP = 745 watts. It looks like the Dayton motor really is 1.5 HP.

The old Delta motor looks to be close to 1 HP at 7.8 running amps. They probably spec'd them way more conservatively back then.

It was our good friends at Sears that brought us modern/exaggerated HP ratings intended to defraud the consumer.

Went ahead and built the hillbilly lathe today and polished the column. Turned out pretty good, there's some minor tooling marks and dings that won't come out but it looks more than good enough for a tool to be used

Also, not sure if anyone here needs one, but someone near me has 3 of the pulley guards for sale.
