(* The 2278 model does not appear in either the 1948 or 1959 Indestro catalogs, nor is it listed on either the 1948 or 1959 price list. The 1948 catalog shows a 2276 non-reversible model only. I believe it is reasonable to assume that this model was manufactured at some point between 1948 and 1959.)

Sorry about my neglecting this thread - time to get back up to speed with some more lovely examples of the venerable Duro Chrome / Indestro sealed pear-head in yet more of its fabulous variants:

Let's begin with what I believe to be a Duro Chrome 679D 1/2" square female drive reversible ratchet - with the equivalent of the 692D Duro Chrome drive adapter - or is that really a 3215 Indestro drive adapter? (patent number 1902878) (photos Ebay)

Note the "depressed" handle, and NO manufacturer's name or part number.
Duro Chrome? or Indestro? Private label model, perhaps?

Here's what's believed to be a model 677 Duro Chrome 1/2" square female drive non-reversible ratchet. (patent number 1902878) (photos Ebay)

As above, note the "depressed" handle, lack of manufacturer's name or model number.

* note as in the example above as well, the drive adapter more closely resembles the 3215 Indestro than the 692D Duro Chrome adapter as it appears in the 1935 Duro Chrome catalog.

This one appears to be a 677D Duro Chrome 1/2" square female drive non-reversible ratchet. As in both example above, it lacks any manufacturer's name or model number, but is stamped with the patent number. (patent number 1902878) (Photos Ebay)

( see also posts #36 and #64 in this thread )

1935 Duro Chrome catalog page 22 shows two different models of "Cub" adaptors:
4493 - 3/8" x 1/4" reducing adaptor
693D - 3/8" x 1/2" increasing adaptor

So depending upon WHICH drive adaptor is in the unit, that 4487 can be 1/4”, or 3/8”, or 1/2” drive.

your assistance or input leading to positive identification of a couple of the "depressed handle" models above (and just below) would be greatly appreciated. ;)

and yet another member of the family -

appears to be a model 3202 Indestro 1/2" square female drive non-reversible ratchet (with the 3215 knurled mushroom-head drive adapter.) (patent number 1902878) (photos Ebay)

note the flat handle with depressed center - a possible forerunner of the later "Select" series ratchets and breaker bars?

(* universal joint in third photo is not a Duro or Indestro product - it's a Walden Worcester. the ratchet somehow found its way into a Walden socket set. *)

Thank you and welcome to the site, bogies!
I still think that one just above (post #57 - the one you currently have listed on Ebay) is one of the more interesting specimens of this "family".
As I noted in the email, I'm thinking it's possibly a unit made for one of Indestro's many private label accounts.
Nothing even close to it at Alloy-Artifacts that I found. Maybe I wasn't looking in the right place? :headscrat

Thanks again.

Here are two model 2889 Indestro reversible ratchets, both stamped with part number (2889), patent number (1902878), but lacking any manufacturer's name.
One is a 1/4" square female drive.
One is a 3/8" square female drive.
Both are clearly marked "No. 2889"

I don't know anything about the old stuff but without the male to male adapter shown in a couple of the photos how could you use it or is it just for show? I have seen a lot of modern adapters but not that combination

From my childhood, the tool brands I remember seeing hanging behind the counters of local parts stores were Proto, S-K, Blackhawk (which my old man carried for a while before he switched to Challenger), and Husky.
I believe the "regional" thing was mentioned in another thread here somewhere. It seems some brands simply lacked any market penetration in some areas.

P&C was in Oregon. I see P&C sockets turn up quite often. I have one or two in the garage, my buddy has a few of them down at his shop just laying around on counters; orphans.

I have to wonder if it's possible some of those pictured above (and many others we've seen in other threads) lacking identifying marks were WWII vintage (or made in the immediate post-war era), when the extra step in stamping numbers, names, or patents might have been considered superfluous.
Wasn't Challenger Proto's lower price line?
Duro and Indestro were like conjoined twins. Separate entities, but not really...

And Yep as mentioned, they made a lot for other companies both marked and unmarked...

Back then the ratchet came with a short adapter (and you reversed the side it was in to reverse the directions) and Male-Male extensions.

I understand. My question was where do get an adapter today. I know exactly what is needed. If you buy one that doesn't come with an adapter or if you don't already have one, the ratchet is a nice paper weight or only good for removing certain drain plugs. How available is that adapter?

I just answered my own question. I found a 1/2" double male adapter on an Australian site for $11au. I also found pictures of flea market finds of double male extensions of various lengths. I guess they are out there.

I believe somebody asked that same question in the "Show us your Duro - Indestro" thread.
The drive adapters for the female drive ratchets (by themselves) are virtually non-existent, at least on Ebay.
Some ratchets listed on Ebay will have the adapter in place, but most of them that I see listed on there are missing the drive adapter.

They do, however, show up in photos of old socket sets (listed on Ebay) - in some cases there might be an extra, or the adapter will be in the set but not the ratchet.
The square drive adapters in some cases were square at both ends (like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-IND...258928?hash=item3acc7405f0:g:BJ8AAOSw9NdXsOfc ), or were a one-way affair with a knurled "mushroom" head (like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/266-INDESTR...514692?hash=item33c1b9d9c4:g:cngAAOSwB09YFlFX )
If you want part numbers for the other ones, download the 1935 Duro Chrome and the 1935 Indestro catalog at ToolArchives.com - although having the part number isn't going to make it easier to find one.

The female hex drive ratchets (kind of superfluous to this thread, actually) used two types of adapters: hex at both ends (like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Indestro-mu...ash=item2a722acb84:g:XcoAAOSw-CpX9YPI&vxp=mtr ), and hex on one end and slotted on the other (like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Ind...722283?hash=item3ad13089ab:g:e-sAAOSwnbZYGll3 or this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-11-...341040?hash=item1a1d46fc30:g:MUcAAOSwAvJW-aOu )(common on the early Indestro female hex-drive "sandwich" ratchets like those used in the 1454 set.)

It is very weird. (see post #60 in this thread)
Did Indestro run out of part numbers?
Or was it simply a design change (going from female to male drive) occurring some time between 1948 and 1959?
And then go up and check post #62 in this thread: two model 2889 ratchets, one is 1/4" female drive and one is 3/8" female drive, and neither appears to have been modified.

Maybe an early 1950's and an early 1960's catalog would help to answer some questions. In the meantime, I remain baffled. :dunno:

(* Work in progess. revised 11/06/16 23:25 PST *)

1935 Indestro catalog No. 1935A shows:

3202 1/2" square female drive non-reversible ratchet
(uses 3215 drive adapter)

(* RE: 3202: "The ratchet mechanism uses a relatively coarse 16-tooth gear, an indication of the early manufacture of this tool." Alloy-Artifacts.org )

2888 3/8" square female drive non-reversible "Cub" ratchet
(uses 3731 3/8" x 3/8" "Cub" 1" extension adapter) or
(uses 2732 3/8" x 3/8" "Cub" 4½" extension adapter) or
(uses 2733 3/8" x 1/4" reducing adapter) * or
(uses 3233 3/8" x 1/2" increasing adapter )

2888 1/4" square female drive non-reversible "Midget" ratchet
(uses 2831 1/4" x 1/4" "Midget" 3/4" extension adapter) or
(uses 2733 3/8" x 1/4" increasing adapter) *

(* note part numbers 2732 and 2733 became standard 3/8" extensions later.)

(* "The 1941 Indestro catalog offered pressed-flange ratchets in three versions, a model 3201R with reversible male/female drive, model 3202R with reversible female drive, and model 3202 with non-reversible female drive. These were part of the Super Quality Chrome Vanadium line and probably would have been marked "Super-Quality"." Alloy-Artifacts.org )

1948 Indestro catalog No. 16 shows:

3201 1/2" square male drive reversible ratchet

(* RE: 3201: "The ratchet mechanism has a 36-tooth gear..." Alloy-Artifacts.org )

3202R 1/2" square female drive reversible ratchet

(* RE: 3202R: "The ratchet mechanism uses an 18-tooth drive gear, slightly finer than the previous example but still relatively coarse." Alloy-Artifacts.org )

3202 1/2" square female drive non-reversible ratchet
(both 3202 and 3202R use 3215 ratchet adapter plug)

2788 3/8" square female drive "Cub" non-reversible ratchet
(uses 2731 3/8" x 3/8" "Cub" 1" extension adapter) or
(uses 2793 3/8" x 1/4" reducing adapter) or
(uses 3233 3/8" x 1/2" increasing adapter)

2789 3/8" square male drive "Cub" reversible ratchet

2888 1/4" square female drive "Midget" non-reversible ratchet

2889 1/4" square female drive "Midget' reversible ratchet
(both 2888 and 2889 use 2831 1/4" x 1/4" "Midget" 3/4" short adapter) or
(both 2888 and 2889 use 2793 1/4" x 3/8" increasing adapter) or

(* "Ratchet models 3201R and 3202R were still available in the 1956 Indestro catalog No. 20, and the model 3201R had assumed its present male-drive-only form. By the early 1960s the only remaining pressed-flange ratchet was the model 3202R." Alloy-Artifacts.org
(* I think the above note was supposed to say 3201, not 3201R. The model 3201 was a male-drive reversible model. )

1959 Indestro catalog No. 22 shows:

3202R 1/2" square female drive 36-tooth reversible ratchet
(uses 3215 1/2" ratchet adapter plug) or
(uses 3205 1/2" x 1/2" & 1¼ extension adapter)

By 1959 the the only iteration of the pressed-flange design ratchet was the 3202R 1/2" drive model.

The other 1/2", 3/8" and 1/4" drive ratchets were available only in the "open gear" type:
3239 1/2" square male drive "open gear" 30-tooth reversible ratchet (oval "flat" handle)

2739 3/8" square male drive "open gear" 30-tooth reversible ratchet (oval "flat" handle)
(* 2739 noted in Jan. 19, 1959 price list as "New item - available at a later date.")
(* note that model 2739 becomes a 3/8" square male drive RHFT flex-head bent-handle model in the 1982 catalog.)

2839 1/4" square male drive "open gear" 30-tooth reversible ratchet (oval "flat" handle)
(* 2839 noted in Jan. 19, 1959 price list as "New item - available at a later date.")

or in the later "RHFT" design most of us are familiar with:

3277 1/2" square male drive RHFT 52-tooth reversible ratchet (oval "flat' handle - four-point selector)

3275 1/2" square male drive RHFT 52-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle - four-point selector)

2777 3/8" square male drive RHFT 52-tooth reversible ratchet (oval "flat" handle - four-point selector)

2775 3/8" square male drive RHFT 52-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle - four-point selector)

2736 3/8" square male drive RHFT 52-tooth reversible flex-head ratchet (oval "flat" handle - four-point selector)

2875 1/4" square male drive RHFT (52-tooth) reversible ratchet (oval "flat" handle - four-point selector)

==

* not in any of my catalogs:

6470 1/2" square male drive "open gear" reversible ratchet (oval "flat" handle) * SELECT *

6270 3/8" square male drive "open gear" reversible ratchet (oval "flat" handle) * SELECT *

6070 1/4" square male drive "open gear" reversible ratchet (oval "flat" handle) * SELECT *

1972 Indestro catalog No. 55 shows:

3275 1/2" square male drive RHFT 52-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle - three-point selector)

3289 (same as 3275 but with 15½" handle)

3270 1/2" square male drive RHFT 52-tooth flex-head reversible ratchet (flat "oval" handle - three-point selector)

6472 1/2" square male drive pear-head 30-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle)

2775 3/8" square male drive RHFT 52-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle - three-point selector)

2736 3/8" square male drive RHFT 52-tooth flex-head reversible ratchet (knurled round handle - three-point selector)

6272 3/8" square male drive pear-head 24-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle)

2875 1/4" square male drive RHFT 52-tooth reversible ratchet (flat "oval" handle - three-point selector)

6072 1/4" square male drive pear head 24-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle)

1982 Indestro catalog No. 60 shows:

3275A 1/2" square male drive RHFT 60-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle - 6-point "star wheel" selector)

3289A (same as 3275A, but with 15½" handle)

3270A 1/2" square male drive RHFT 60-tooth flex-head reversible ratchet (knurled round handle - 6-point "star wheel" selector)

6472 1/2" square male drive pear-head 30-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle)

3280 1/2" square male drive "SLR 500" 30-tooth reversible Indestro-Roberts quick-release ratchet (knurled round handle)

2775A 3/8" square male drive RHFT 60-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle - 6-point "star wheel" selector)

2736A 3/8" square male drive RHFT 60-tooth flex-head reversible ratchet (knurled round handle - 6-point selector)

2739 3/8" square male drive RHFT 60-tooth reversible bent-handle flex-head ratchet (knurled round handle - 6-point "star wheel" selector)
(* note that model 2739 was formerly a 3/8" square male drive "open gear" 30-tooth reversible ratchet (oval "flat" handle) in the 1959 catalog.)

6272 3/8" square male drive pear-head 24-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle)

2780 3/8" square male drive "SLR 375" 24-tooth reversible Indestro-Roberts quick-release ratchet (knurled round handle)

2875A 1/4" square male drive RHFT 60-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle - 6-point "star wheel" selector)

6072 1/4" square male drive pear-head 24-tooth reversible ratchet (knurled round handle)

2880 1/4" square male drive "SLR 250" 24-tooth reversible Indestro-Roberts quick-release ratchet (knurled round handle)

Notes:

The list above is for Indestro only. Duro Chrome is not included.

The 1935 and 1948 catalogs do not show "tooth count".

Refrigeration ratchets and 3/4" drive ratchets are not included in the above list.

Unless otherwise noted, selectors on reversible models are lever-type.

Some models using the same part numbers may have been available in two different drive sizes. See notes in post #62 of this thread (above.)(?)

The quotes lifted from Alloy-Artifacts.org have been inserted where they seemed appropriate.

I have only the 1935, 1948, 1959, 1972, and 1982 catalogs. One can therefore make only a rough guess as to actual production dates on the above.
Only by having every catalog issued would one be able to ascertain with any certainty when any particular model was initially produced, and when its production run ceased.

It is reasonable to assume that the Duro Chrome / Indestro pressed-flange design ratchet (using patent number 1902878 see HERE: http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?id=10709 ) - in its many variants - had a production run of ±30 years.

Some more pics for your thread here. I have several of these Duro Metal made ratchets. Here is a pair of the small ones. The unmarked ratchet has a 3/8" female drive with no plug. But when I bought it from the flea, it had some type of push driver attached, made by Dill Manufacturing. Making it some kind of early ratcheting screwdriver. So, there were other uses for these types, I'm sure.

I believe the handle on the unbranded ratchet just went without a final forging process to give it the Duro and patent stamps. The drivers are virtually identical.
