That worked pretty good, now what else can we spend Ed's money on? :lol_hitti

Ed, I think you'll really like those in the shop, and should speed up the fab process dramatically by cutting out all that welding..

shrinker on one side, stretcher on the other. You can cheap out and only buy one housing with both dies, but then the first time you shrink too much and need to stretch, you'll wear out the jaws changing back and forth. Two setups like that are the ticket.

The foot attachment is real sweet Ed! I've often wanted to make some for my shrinker stretcher set. Your gonna love it.
Oh yea, by the way, you ****!:)
I plan to make a foot operated stand for my S/S set and have probably saved about 25 photos of ones that are commercially available or that people have made. I think I have TOO MANY ideas ... I just need to pick one and get on with it. I really don't like operating them by hand!

I'm guessing that you're getting it at Princess Auto where they have them on sale right now (can't remember the amount). Make sure you don't get the display model! I asked about one a few years ago and the display model was the only one they had left (I ended up getting heads only - no stand - via a private sale). I asked the sales clerk if I could get it for half price and he was shocked. When I told him that half of the people that walked through the front door had probably pumped it 3 or 4 each times he laughed and nodded his head.

You guys are hilarious!! I'm sure you could talk me into buying MANY tools!!

Yes - Princess Auto. $250.00 on sale. I'll put it together and test it out, but won't have a project for it until I finish the bodywork and get the Cougar to the paint shop. Then I have a 40 Ford Sedan coming in, but it's mostly finishing work - wiring, drive train, gaps, interior, - Oh, I have to make a custom console, so maybe I'll use it then, but the big test will be our 240Z: floors, quarters, inners, rockers.....

Stay tuned!

Have you ever considered a small block Ford for the 240Z? A 302 with a 5 spd out of a Mustang would make that car fly and be easier to get parts for. Something to think about.

Its a pretty common swap for 240z's. Just about everything has been swapped into them, mine an Autech SR20DE. Check out hybridz.org e-tek is also a member there :D

Ed- great work on the Cougar so far! Nice to see you stimulating the economy buying all those new tools. And quite changing your avatar dammit. I forget to read the new posts! Keep up the good work!

I have the same unit. It works well ... and the price was right! I put 4" lockable casters on mine which brought it to a nice height and obviously made it easier to move around. Did you fill yours with sand? I don't think it makes it work or sound any better but it does feel a bit more "substantial".

I have several small block Ford engines. A quick trip to any auto wreck will get you one, also.

Great videos. I "liked" and "subscribed".

Good video E-Tek.

You need to make you a torch stand. A base, a couple of pieces of tubing or rebar, and a couple of Vee's at the top to cradle the torch. It comes in way handier than trying to get it to set on the stool or something.

Yes what is it with the now constantly changing Avatar ? I'd be worried the heels would scratch the paint.

Someone made the same heels comment before and Mrs E-tek said: "Tell them not to worry, I'm no amateur!"

I actually mention in the video how at my Dad's shop they had nice holders. All the way through - and every time I use the torch - I think about it too!

Thanks T, your comment made Colton's day ! Of course they were all first tries and single takes - so they should get better over time!

While out for a family cruise Friday, we heard a clunk then felt the car pull right. Got home and removed the wheels and drums and found this:

Ironic too, since a week ago I took a peak under the drums and decided not to bother with the brakes!! They are all new now.

Back to the Cougar, we're on the final stretch of bodywork! A skim coat of Z-grip lightweight filler was applied to the repair areas and sanded out. I generally start with 40G on the orbital, just to knock down any spatula marks and blend the edges, then get on the long board sander to bring it close. Lastly I'll block it out by hand and do the contours with various shapes wrapped with sandpaper.

These are now the only spots with any filler - and it's less than 1/16" instead of 1/2" as was there before. 95% of the old brass was also removed and re-welded with steel, which will reduce any flex which can cause issues down the road.

After more finish work on the inners (here you can see my assortment of blocks and files), I also skim-coated in there. The goal of course is so that no-one will be able to tell there were repairs done.

Lastly, I went once around the car with the orbital. I did an initial sand on all the inners up front, then I'll finish sand it all and prime it. After the body work is close on the quarters, I'll re-attach the doors and fenders, then do the final work, including fitment and gaps before it goes to the body shop for paint. Getting there!

Ed,
Kudos on the interior panel finish work. Amazing how many people have almost perfect rear quarter repairs from the outside only to look in the trunk and see the poor workmanship. You do great work and even make a good video star! X2 on the torch stand I can see your ladder trick coming back to cause all sorts of trouble..

E-Tek, just got back on the forum after a week of travel; it's got to feel good to see this project getting close to completion. I'm also glad to see Colton's first first video effort coming out of 'Dad's Shop'! Nice job Colton!

Mom and Dad now need to (gently) push Colton in the direction of 'Film School' preparation. This video is #1 on his 'Video Portfolio' which is usually reviewed by the Admissions Board Artistic Evaluation committee. Never too early to start preparing for his college education! lol

After seeing the replies urging you to make a real torch stand, here's an idea for something a little 'different'; kind of a family project that might be fun. Do a little Internet sleuthing to find a DIY mold-making process. Get the boys to slip on a long latex glove and make a cast of their forearms. Make the male casts using their female molds with plaster, plastic, expanding foam over wire, poured aluminum, or whatever. When your done, you will forever have something unique in your shop AND you will always have the boys there to 'lend Dad a HAND'! :lol_hitti
