Played with the alarm system on the bench for a while today. This is going to be a really nice system! This is the touchscreen HMI.

I've been sorting out the alarm system layout and programming. Lots of conduit to run. I'm not satisfied with the flimsy DSC enclosure. I found a very nice cabinet on eBay.

The seller has a lot of them. If this one is as good as it looks I'll get two more. One for the additional alarm stuff and another for network hardware.

The damned "make an offer" feature on eBay got me tonight. I lowballed two different auctions for electrical enclosures. Good thing I keep a small inventory of this sort of stuff around for shop projects. I can't complain I got two of the black and one grey-for $40/ea shipped.

Lots of little stuff getting sorted out. The Siemens alarm panels arrived. They are much thicker steel than the ****** DSC offering. Picked up a 75/25 Argon/CO2 cylinder for the MIG welder and ordered a 15' torch.

The compressor controls are finished. The hand switch turns on the compressor and the receptacle powering the tank drain solenoid. Both are supervised by the lighting contactor. The starter switches the motor circuit, only when the lights are on.

Just found this thread today, great stuff. I've been working on turning an old building into a shop for the last year. Lot's of challenges with a job like that, you are doing great.

Thanks!

Ordered a Pioneer (highseer.com) 24k btu/hr mini split heat pump. Will be here next Thursday. It's going in the "new" side of the shop. Really excited to see how it does.

Lots of little stuff coming in from Amazon, eBay and Alarm System Store.

First bits of the mini split showed up today. $31 for both, shipped. Amazon Prime really is a great deal! I'm excited to get this system installed!

Yep, love Amazon prime. Old buildings can be a challenge but it looks like yours has good bones so always worth it IMO. It looks like the main part of the building has a pitched roof that might be easy to put steel on. Is there also a section of flat roof?

The old building is flat with 3' rise over 30'. New building is 8.5" over 30'. Plan is steel roof. Sheathe entire building walls, house wrap and steel. 2x4 walls inside of the block walls for insulation.

I bought this Powermatic 14" wood cutting bandsaw from a guy that got it out of a high school wood shop 3.5 years ago. I've wanted it on a mobile base since I brought it home. I have been happy with the heavy duty Shop Fox bases on my 20" bandsaw and 20" planer. I got the next size down for this guy. I bolt a piece of 3/4 plywood to the base and the machine to the base. They work well.

The panel the alarm manufacturer provided is flimsy ****. I wanted something better. I found two new fire alarm enclosures on eBay for a good price. Cut a piece if 1/8" aluminum sheet to fit. Just drilled and tapped a bunch of 6-32 holes for the pcb standoffs. This is much better than what I started with. Main panel done, expansion panel up next. Then the real fun of running a ton of wire... In conduit.

This guy came just in time for my birthday. First of two or three mini split systems for the shop- depending on how well the heat and cool the building.

It's taking me a while to get my head around how I want to build out the shop. At this point I'm doing the work myself and paying as I go. The mini splits will be my main source of heat with some resistive heaters I already have as backup when the heat pumps can't keep up. I feel good about that part of things and have sorted out where I'm going to mount the first two mini split systems.

First one is going on the back wall of bay 1. I know long term I want to build 2x4 walls inside the block walls for insulation. I bought forty 12', twenty 10' 2x4's to get me started and some R-13 batting to get started with.

The wall is going here:

Took off work early today and drive 200 miles round trip to drag this guy home- Powermatic Model 60 8" jointer. Needs a little cleanup and it will be put to use. Been looking for one for quite a while. Got a good deal, too! Great start to a 5.5 day weekend!

First section of wall is up. I used a 1-1/8" router bit to cut slots in the wall side for existing 1/2" EMT. I also routed slots for 1/2 & 3/4 EMT on the front side. This will be plenty to accommodate future receptacles, etc. I used Red Head concrete anchors into the floor, wall and adjacent wall. It isn't going anywhere. The goal is insulation, the conduit run and finished interior walls over the existing block. This section is getting roughed in first so I can get the mini-split system installed. Hopefully this weekend.

I missed this one and just enjoyed a read through the entire thread. Thanks. Are you working as you go or taking time off to finish the shop?

Wall is framed in. I'm really happy with the way this is coming together. Sorted out shortening the existing conduit drops and getting them flush with the new wall surface. The two existing drops will have quad 20A receptacles.

Got the sliding table set up on my unisaw. Liking how this guy works..

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1441510170.729019.jpg

Had a problem with the receptacles on the wall I built. Turns out the neutral wasn't made up. At some point a long time ago someone connected these outlets neutral to the EMT. Glad I found it. This ate up a bunch of time. Started putting up the insulation.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1441510296.939972.jpg

A good buddy of mine was once a HVAC tech. He's coming over tomorrow to help me get one of these installed in that wall. Once the lines are ran, I'll get the insulation up. Going to mount the indoor unit to 3/4" plywood. The rest of the wall will be drywall with a large row of pegboard. Thinking I'll back the pegboard with thinner plywood so there's something between the insulation and pegboard.

Getting there. Glad I had some guidance. Simple job. Going to borrow a tubing bender and get the lineset done after work this week. Hoping to get the electrical done today/tomorrow.

Any reason not to drywall the whole wall then bump the pegboard out from it? Love the Incra setup!

Only that drywall crushes when I tighten the attachment strips for the pegboard. So, I was thinking I'd use plywood..

I like Incra's stuff. More on the horizon once the mini splits are up and running. Next up is a Clearvue cyclone dust collector.

First mini-split installation is wrapping up. Need to get the wall penetration trimmed and sealed up. Then continue the interior wall. It works!!

Best pricing on PVC pipe and fittings I found was H.D. Fowler Co.. I set up an account and they delivered for a small charge. Let me know if I can answer any questions.

I bought a bunch of fittings a couple years ago along with Clearvue's 6" blast gates and 6-4" transition boxes. I think I got the 6" hose from Wynn Environmental. Going to need more 6" pipe though. I'll look into getting a cash account with HD Fowler over in Spokane. Thanks for the tip!

Dat: i've been looking for a Burr King for several years since i found a friend one so he could make knives. I have yet to see a used one for sale anywhere. nice find.

the shop looks like it's coming along slowly but with very high quality. keep up the great work and any more pictures you can post of the shop's interior or exterior would be great.

Drives- I've had my eye out for years. I lucked out on this one. It will clean up to near new condition..

The first photo is my attempt at drawing the building in SketchUp. I call the areas of the shop bays, as shown in the photo. Originally I wanted to remove the wall between bays 3 and 4. Turns out that wall is supporting the roof, so it stays. Bay 4 will be divided up into three rooms - 16x10 finishing with ventilation, 16x9 dirty room for grinders, sand blast cabinet and MIG welder, and the remaining 16x9 nearest bay 5 will have machine tools and metal working machines.

Bay 3 is where the woodworking room will go. I play to build wall directly under the overhead beam between 2 and 3 to divide off the wood shop room. The orange air compressor in the rear right of the photo will be relocated. Plan is to build a room for the Cleavue in that spot. It will be outside of and adjacent to the wood room. All of the shelving on the right of the photos will be moved and the room dedicated to woodworking. I do a lot of router work and will have a few router stations. Thinking I'll build a long miter station along the wall where the shelving currently resides.

So, the bay is 16' wide and 28' long. I put the bandsaws, Unisaw, jointer and planer in places I think they would work well. I will probably roll the jointer and planer into position when I'm milling lumber and toward the wall the rest of the time. I have two Festool MFT's with vacuums and boom arms that I use often. They will be on the opposite side of the room from the bandsaws. While I mostly do upholstery related woodworking, I have a lot of shop projects and aspirations to make some furniture in the future.

I know I have a good bit of room to work with. I welcome any thoughts or feedback on the layout or anything else for that matter.

Thanks!

Wonderful looking work space. What kind of upholstering are you doing? Automotive/marine or building your own furniture? Or both?

I just went back and read the whole thread from the beginning and answered my own question. Some days I put the coma in Tacoma.

I prefer traditional hot rods and customs for upholstery projects. I do some higher end car audio work in new(er) cars. I have done some marine stuff. I avoid furniture unless it's my own.

Thanks for the kind words!

I mean no offense but why do most Upholster's seem to be flakes? I have had a set of seats at three shops and both are various states over the course of 2.5 years.

Very strange. I'm trying to get some Recaro's redone, it's painful. The guy that has em now is almost done after 4 months.
