It's getting close to the time when you have an adult beverage in your hand as you look at all that work you did and let it soak it in.

There are still two exterior walls that will need the same paint treatment. It will wait for the spring. You are so right though! I am really excited about how the shop will look driving up to it every day through the winter months!!

Looks great. Do you have any room or time to do a complete custom interior on a 66 Nova wagon 2 door???

Ha!! You know I do! I’m not sure who’s more excited to have your car in my shop!!

Looking great Steven. Keep up the fantastic work.[emoji106]

Thank you for your continued support! I love watching your projects. We share a lot of similar ideas on how we like to do things.

I sprayed the second coat of gray after work today. Current paint tally is 124 gallons interior and 46 gallons exterior with two walls remaining. It will be over 200 gallons when complete. I have prepped and sprayed every bit of that paint. It looks and feels incredible!

Thanks for checking out my shop build and cheering me on guys!!

This photo shows the before/after so well::

Thanks guys!!

Gray paint is dry and looks awesome. I got a good bit of overspray on the steel trim. Did a test patch and it comes off with acetone. I’ll get the rest off soon. I got a solid first coat of white on the trim and old entry door.

How it sits now.

SD: i just painted my house with 12 gallons of Sherman Williams paint and even with a 40% discount i practically had to take out a bank loan. GEESH 200 gallons!!

looking good and are you looking for some old vintage signs or some yard art to maybe dress up the place or still trying to just blend in? in any case you have sure improved the neighborhood's look and that's not including all the VERY COOL and QUALITY STUFF INSIDE.

cheers and good luck with the NOVA and yes lots of pics if you have any time.

You've made a huge improvement to the grounds and the building. Can't wait to see more projects from the inside too. The new paint really makes the exterior look good.

Outside and inside will be simple and understated with as close to zero clutter as possible.

Thank you! It is getting there. I’m eyeballing the weather. If it holds through the week, I may be able to get the last two walls sprayed.

Did some rearranging today. Donor car is in the shop to have the LT1/4L60e removed. I got a second coat of paint on the trim today.

I enjoy the before/after photos. It looks like I’m done with exterior painting for the year. I have the paint on hand for when the opportunity presents itself in the spring. Now, to get a punch list of little stuff taken care of and the shop ready for a full custom interior project!

Last night I moved the stuff I use for maintenance on my rigs (motorcycle lift, oil change stuff, etc), building my personal cars (huge jack stands and the like) and other stuff to the new place. It will be so nice to have that stuff out of the shop!

Next up is get the LT1/4L60e out of the Caprice and get it gone.

Well. I felt compelled to read your entire thread and have to say that although I feel I am a pretty motivated guy, I surely pale in comparison to your seemingly perpetual energy! Not only are you able to make the time to get the tasks done, you're able to log and document it. That's where I always ****. I get stuff done, then remember that I shoulda taken a picture or two. Keep up the good work and give us lots of pics of that sweet long roof, that looks to a fun project.

Got a few things done at the shop today. Working on getting things dialed in for when the Nova arrives. Moved a bunch of stuff to store at the new building.

Got the air hose reel up in the metal fab room.

Used my utility trailer and ramp to move a few things that I don’t want in the shop to the new building this morning..

afe5d168bf392f26c8f2c9f400631d70.jpg

And rented a forklift for a couple hours to move the old Cannedy Otto drill press and Bridgeport mill. At some point the Bridgeport will get completely rebuilt and put into service in the shop. It will be at the new building for the rebuild.

It’s so nice to get these guys out of the shop and not have to send them down the road. The ‘54 Chevy is parked in front of the machines. All stored away in a heated bay for the winter.

The Caprice donor car leaves tomorrow to have the engine and transmission pulled and the car scrapped. I had originally thought this setup would get rebuilt and put in the ‘54. I want a manual transmission in the ‘54, so this setup will go in a future shop truck build or something.

I have a few more things I’d like to move to store in the new building. The shop is really taking shape. I am so excited to get to doing some upholstery fabricating!

Caprice donor car left last night. First time I’ve had an empty (of cars) shop, ever!

f67ec81e6551c03bfe54e4a608eef132.jpg

Some cleanup and I’m on to getting a few things sorted out in the woodshop. This is starting to look like I’ve envisioned the past two and a half years!

SD: not only does your shop look great, but you've added some sweet machines and storage since you began a couple years ago. WELL DONE SIR!!

i bet your new place is filling up quickly with those projects and having a bed close by might be a good thing with all the hours you work your regular job and here too.

best of luck restoring that old drill press and in case you haven't seen the vintage drill press thread here's a link where a few other members have restored drill presses like yours.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116677&highlight=vintage+drill+press

i picked up a Canedy-Otto little bench top DP a few years ago and even though it doesn't get used much i still smile when i see it sitting on one of my benches.

best of luck with the Nova and i bet it will look great in your new space!!

Lots of stuff going on in the shop. My router table needed an adjustment so that I could finish work on the top. There was a crown on the rear support rail. Not sure how it happened. Especially only on the back. I used the Festool track saw to cut the reference line, then a huge, long pattern bit in a router to continue it down. Ended up with a 1.5” x 6” chunk left to handle with a chisel. Went well.

Top sitting like it should.

Dust collection boxes going together.

b2de3e0ec3f76e7d8ad24aa8883c26e8.jpg

These attach to the underside of the table. The router lift drops into this box. It has a dust collection port on the back that will exit the back wall of the table, into the dust collection header. The automation system will know which router is running and open it’s associated blast gate lining it up to the collector.

I started painting new entry doors. It didn’t go well. The tip for my 3M Accuspray gun was bad and it took a while to sort out. This resulted in an unintentional, undesirable speckle finish that I get to sand out.

ecd1664c9ffaa4d1fbc2e360b3660b4a.jpg

It was nice to spray the paint in the booth though.

I’ve known I need a leather skiving machine for a long time. It’s a specialty machine that thins the edge of the hide. It can also split up to about a 2” strip, but it’s main purpose is skiving. Well... the classic design is by a German company that is hard to find a good used one these days. The Chicom copies are mostly junk, so finding a good machine took some effort. I finally found a company that uses a current production Italian made head as the base of their unit. They add a DC gear reduction motor to separately drive the feed roll, resulting in a very controllable machine. I placed the order almost six months ago. It arrived today. It’s one of those things that when you need it, you NEED it. Happy to have it in the shop.

Getting a lot of loose ends taken care of right now. Woodshop will be up and running very soon.

Not being an upholstery guy, I'm not sure what "skiving" is. Does the machine put a "beveled" type of edge on the leather? Or more of a stepped "flange" on it?

It’s more of a flange if you will, depending on the depth of the cut.

My daily driver is an ‘07 F150 XL extended cab, long bed. The XL’s are fleet trucks for the most part. I bought this one 3.5 years ago with 150k miles on it. It has the accessories I consider mandatory on a modern rig- cruise, power windows/locks and that’s about it. I replaced the spark plugs right when I bought it without incident.

A while back it started acting up, missing and what not. It had a CEL for a long while from the EVAP Control solenoid circuit. A couple nights ago it was time to dig in. The first night it plain kicked my ***. Last night I got the solenoid circuit sorted out. The +12v wire had corroded inside the harness. This is what I cut out from a previous repair.

e841c7845763c9c7d11fe2268572ab50.jpg

It’s a 20ga wire and this is a common problem.

Next up was the passenger front O2 sensor. It arrived this morning. It was a royal pain to replace but I got it. Once I had a clear board on the scanner I drove it and started getting a miss on cylinder 3 pending. Replaced the coil and got the same on cylinder 6 on the test drive. Replaced that coil and it seems to be driving great!

It always feels good once it’s fixed!

Got the drive cycle tests to run on a trip to see the lady. Looks like all is well as far as codes go.

I’m pulling the instrument cluster today so I can send it out for repair. Then I’ll have all of the little things sorted out. For now.

I **think** I have the dust collection plumbing sorted out on the router table. Next step is to get the pneumatic cylinders mounted on the gates and get this thing assembled.

I've found the best design for an enclosed dust collection chamber is to install the collection pipe at the bottom and slope the chamber to it. Directs all the chips and dust to where you want it to go. Suction AND gravity.

I sent the instrument cluster out for repair on Monday and received it back Saturday. They fixed the issues. It works like it should. It’s hard to believe how much of a difference these little things make! I polished the lens prior to install.

Had an issue with the primary connection on one of the coils I replaced. Looks like I have it working now.

For the solenoid valves used with the pneumatic cylinders , did you go with a 2-way or 3-way (center closed)? Part # would be great. Thanks!

4-way valve. The valves, cylinders and some of the fittings came from Automation Direct. A few of the pneumatic bits came from a place called Fright Props, specifically the mufflers with integral valve.

Thanks. That was the last piece needed, I hope, for parts order to build a prototype with a single 4" and 6" gate.
Decided to try Automation Direct's Click PLC. Besides being cheaper than Direct Logic 06, the software for it is free. The Direct Logic software is $395.
