I’m an occasional attempting tig welder. Respect to the true welders out there. I was having a hard time seeing through my bi-focals in my old Miller Digital Elite hood. The Optrel Crystal 2.0 hood is nothing short of amazing. I think I’ll get some time in the hood today.

The helmet hook painted and in use. Really clever idea.

I’m sure you guys are tired of photos of my air system. Spray booth pressure gauge came today. Really happy with the results and that it’s done.

What kind of silly question is that?!?!?! You do realize the audience you're dealing with, right?

Great progress and keep 'em coming.

I'm having one of those days.. you guys rock!!

UPS man brought some goodies today at lunch.. I've been wanting a nice angle grinder for those times the lower end Dewalts I have don't cut the mustard. There was a GJ thread about them that convinced me to give the Metabo's a try.

And.. the radiator for the '54. Cold Case sells import goods. I couldn't find a reasonably priced alternative. AFCO was over $1k. I'll give this one a go and see how it works out. Out of the box it looks like a really nice piece. I bought it with the fan and shroud.

Be sure to give a review of that Metabo after a few uses. I'd like to know how it compares to the Dewalt unit, please.

I bought a few different grinders, trying to find one that I liked. I settled on the Makita SJSII and another Milwaukee 6117-33D. I sent the Metabo back. I quickly realized a really wanted variable speed over any other features. The Metabo was a very nice tool, but not what I was wanting. I did however find something by Metabo that I wanted.. and I found one on Amazon Warehouse Deals for about 40% off the very spendy price tag.. Metabo's burnisher. Can't wait to get it. Amazon's description of the condition: "Condition: Used - Acceptable - Large cosmetic imperfection(s) on top, front or sides of item. Item will come repackaged." I hope this is talking about the metal tool box it comes in because I won't care if that's what's damaged :)

I really like the hanger idea.

I do, too! I had the plastic version and it is alright. When I saw the steel, I ordered one for the MIG that gets dragged around the shop a lot more.

Sorted out the abrasives..

Fun with the laser tonight. I’ve wanted to sort out making these tabbed boxes for a while. A little over the top. And quite relaxing project.

Sorting out tolerances.

The Benchmark stuff comes in packages of 10, 25 or 50 depending on the item. Consensus seems to be they are good bang for the buck.

I feel like I knew this was next.. The reasoning is I bought a few assortments a couple years ago and the grit is only written on the back of one of each grit. I had been planning on labeling the Schaller bins, until this idea came along. It’s nice to enjoy making stuff like this on a weekend. No adhesive in this one. Only snapped together.

I’m willing to cut them out for people. Could ship flat pack.. Assembly is super satisfying. What configuration do you want [emoji23]

Any is any. I’d say limits are material size, and what a guy wants to ship. I think we have the same Vidmar stuff so I can use that for reference. It’s digital fab ;)

Got it, I’ll measure when I get home. Just wanted to understand the constraints so I didn’t assume.

UPS man left this guy on the porch. It was difficult to choose which one I wanted. I think I’ll be quite happy with it.

My dewalt is about had it. Where did you buy from?

Edit: there’s a mess to browse on Amazon. Interesting variety. Many have variable speed control and non-locking switches. What the hell good is a grinder with non-locking switches?! [emoji16]

My dewalt is about had it. Where did you buy from?

I started off a couple weeks ago wanting a really nice, variable speed. Everything I read said Metabo. I went looking on GJ and I decided to get a Metabo. I was wanting a rat tail. I own a few older, well worn Dewalt 4.5" grinders that rattle your brains and ears when you run them and one Milwaukee variable speed I bought a couple years ago to dedicate to concrete work on my floor. I bought and returned 3 different grinders, two of which were high end Metabo before I settled on the one in the picture (Metabo WEPBA 17-150 Quick RT DS). It has all of their latest tech, but is not variable speed. I intend to use it the most for cutting and heavier grinding. It will be great in that role. I bought it from CPO on ebay.

In my research I also found a Makita SJS II variable speed (GA5042C) that I decided to keep for when I want to slow the wheel down. I also highly recommend it. Home Depot and Amazon have the same price on this grinder.

I tend to buy tools that I will enjoy using and will last me a long time. I have had some of the Dewalts for over a decade and I bought them used. I hope this is somehow helpful!

Edit: out of the mess of grinders I own, one is a paddle. I like the slide switch.

I ended up going to Makita, Metabo, Dewalt and Milwaukee's catalogs and searching for specific part numbers to find models that interest me. They aren't the most popular or most well stocked. I am happy with what I chose.

Amazon warehouse deal for the win!! It appears to be slightly used once. Almost 40% off. All in great shape save for a scratch or two. This is going to be a really nice addition to the fabrication process.

The first Metabo burnishing machine was defective. Amazon sold me a new one for the same price. Didn’t expect that. It arrived today. This is an incredible tool for working on flat surfaces like machine tables, welding table, etc.

Drill press table before. I had used a scotchbrite pad on a drill.

IMG_7757.jpg

After, working through the burnisher’s three grits included in the kit - 80, 180 and 280. The best part is how the scratch marks all go one direction. They offer higher grits and polishing wheels as well.

IMG_7758.jpg

This was a splurge for my birthday that will be nice to have in the shop.

Thank you. It’s going to do a wonderful job on my welding tables and all of my machinery tables. Really excited about the finish it leaves.

Dan and Justin - dr_clyde did it to me with the burnisher. After using it for 20 minutes I'm here to say it is a very nice addition to the shop and fab process in general. Especially on these tool and welding tables.

SD: long time no visit and I need to catch up in all your doings. hope all is ok in your world and from the looks of it so far after reading a little it seems to still be full speed ahead and "SLEEP WHEN YOU'RE DEAD".

I've never heard of a burnisher, but I have a 7.5 inch grinder with a huge flap disk on it that i'm going to see if it might give me similar success.

have a great weekend!!
