If you were Amish, the whole community would have finished this in a day. You're doing great for a one man crew in this heat.

Keep taking pictures and posting them.

Made a little progress this weekend, but not much. Had a nice storm come through Saturday early and dumped about 3" on us. We needed it. Wife and I got out early to dry off and restack the lumber. Unfortunately, the storm knocked out power at work long enough to shut down our data center, so we spent about 4 hours at work trying to get things running again. By the time that was done, the day was shot and we just had dinner and went to a movie (The Help - recommended). Where Saturday was kinda leisure time, Sunday was more work. My wife and I wranged the door beam into place. I stacked the 2x12s to try and work the twist against each piece. I used construction glue and deck screws for the initial fastenting, we stood on the opposite ends, etc and got most of the twist out. We hung one end in the pocket and semi-secured it, then got the other end up. Took some pushing, shoving and banging to get the wall pockets closed. Then it took her pulling on an 8' 2x lever to straighten the other end while I shot screws and nails into the ends, but we got it done. Took about 2 hours.

I got most of the work room wall done before rain ran me off the job. Just as well since external data services at work had cratered again so I had to go in. The new stove and microwave we ordered were in, so we need to go to Sears anyhow.

Proud papa LOL. I know the numbers, but when you stand in the space it makes it real. Measuring either side of that post is the same size space as my old shop. Killer deal.

Room with a view.

After about 4 hours at work, we picked up the appliances, had dinner with the kids, did the grocery shopping and got home about 8:30. Unloaded the stuff and went to work on it. No docs for unmounting the old GE microwave (GEs web site only had the use and care manual), but I figured it out after a bit. Nothing like bear hugging a 70 lb microwave with 10 years of greasy side panels on it. Tasty. After all kinds of hoo-ha mounting the bracket for the new microwave, having to tap out and thread one of the main unit mounting screws to make it work - after mounting the unit twice wondering why only one screw would thread in - and making the vent hole in the upper cabinet bigger, we got the thing mounted up and running. The stove was easier, except that once leveled I figured out the anti-tip bracket template was off so the unit came in and out of the hole several times before that got zeroed it. Time to bed - 1 AM. Old stuff works good and will go to the Habitat store for recycling.

Our anniversery is Tuesday and I told her for #31, you get wood. But it looks like Wednesday now before I can get the joist and rafter material.

Nice Night shot.

Man, that door beam makes me tired just looking at it. Congrats on getting it up with just the two of you!

I picked up the 2x6x14 rafter pieces and 19 2x12x24' joists. $1000 gone that quick. I may be able to start putting up some joists tonight. I figure the 2x12x24s weigh about 90~95 lbs each. That'll make ya tired.

Nothing much to report today - got 10 of the 19 joists up. I planted about 5 myself then the neighbor came over and helped with the rest. Them's big bastards. I can pick them up, but the more green ones are really heavy. I built some jigs so I can stand the joists up, then run a deck screw in each end to hold them in place while I nail the base. After about 3, I layed down some strong back material to help keep them spaced and keep them from flipping over.

Hacking the rafters is turning out to be a chore. I cut the joists at 24' and they run a little short on the west end. So I cut the first pair of test rafters for a 12' span - and they are too long at the heel. WTF. Figured it a couple of times, ran some calcs online. Figures look right but they run wide by about 1/4" per side. Heel cuts lay right, so I'll just have to mess with it. I may leave that - it's let the Hardi slide up in the notch. I have plenty of H1 Simpson Hurricane ties for the rafter tails, so they won't be going anywhere. Got the ridge started and level. It was hotter than blazes, had to give it up about 2:30.

Thanks everyone for the great comments! Man, those joists will wear you out. We are beat up now. My wife spent the morning helping me hoof the big board up. There is one joist so wet it's oozing a little sap. Got the rest of them up today by around 2:30. It was hotter today than yesterday. I lasered the floor and it was 130F, no wonder I went through 6 bottles of Gatoraid. I tweaked the ridge and cut some more rafters and they fit OK,so I'll just go a pair at a time. There will be weidness, especially since a straight board is the exception. We're pretty close on 24" OC in most places ha-ha. I'm cutting the tails as I go, but I'll bet I come back and run a string line across them. I used 14' 2x6s and the dimension with the tail is 13' 10 9/16". Now that's cutting it close LOL. I thought a 5 pitch would be weird, but the tables show 13" per foot of rafter length.

Can't wait to move in.
Framing22.jpg

Lesson learned - build the non bearing partition after the joists are up. You can't really tell, but there is a bit of a rise in the floor here that required skimming the middle of the top plate for about 12' between zero and about 1" with the circular saw. Got the fit pretty decent for a hack job.

LOL. I have a nice 500w light and it'll pull in bugs from the next county. I just don't get much chance to work in the evening, and less time this week because we have a race this weekend, school starts and we're picking up the kids maybe 2-3 days. I may not even get rafters cut this week. Dry-in by September is starting to look kinda weak.

I see something here I dont't like. It looks like the electrical is coming up between the man door and the OH door. Nice corner for the panel but a ***** when starting to pull wire. As your finishing up think about building a chase or something to help get the wires out of there and to the places you want them to terminate. I did the corner panel just like that on the first shop and cussed it every time I had to pull a new circuit out of it. My new shop has the panel in the center dividing wall and so much easier to work with. All else is looking good. I hope your time line gets better and your in soon.

Good advice. I'm with you on that already LOL. I put it on that wall because of the gable end and proximity to the house. Trying to keep the main power run as short as possible. There will be a removable OSB panel on the wall and a little 20" square attic panel above the power panel just for running wires. I had my last box too close to a framing member and off towards a corner - I ain't doing that again. Nothing like trying to punch a 1" hole through two plates, laying on rafters with your head stuck in about 18" of clearance. When I put that old one in, I "thought of all the circuits" - NOT.

You probably know this, but you keep talking about all the Gatorade you've consumed. You should be hitting the water at least 50% of the time.

Well Chris looks like you had a fun weekend anyways . Do you wear a fire suit when running the car if so I know that makes the heat twice as bad had a couple of guys from my truck club that just went to Bonnyville to run their truck and that was one thing they pointed out was having to sit in the staging lanes fully suited up was rough .

I'm slow enough right now (broke the big motor) that I don't have to wear my fire jacket or pants. But I had to wear gloves because everything inside the car was too hot to touch. Even when covered with towels between rounds.

Hey Chris,

Looking good man. You should post your 2nd garages at night picture over here as well. I love the way you back lit that just enough to pick up the framing and rafters but still let that glorious Texas night sky shine on.

Hopefully you'll get some cooler weather to work in over the next little while.

When it time to go racing..the world stops.. until the final round !..
In my case - round 4 LOL. 8.26 on the brakes against a 8.29 dial. After a 8.29 and 8.305. Pick up 4 at 106F air temp? WTF. Go figure. I ran dead on with a 3 (.003 off dial) in Dialing for Dollars and lost that to a guy that went only .0001 off dial. It was that kinda day. :lol_hitti

LOL - bracket racer lingo. People reading, going "what in tha hell are they talking about". I won the first with a .012 to his .2xx, lost #2 by .012 at the stripe, bought back, won #3 by .008 at the stripe with him dead on with an 8, then ran stupid far under and out. Last year Summit winner, 3rd time Mod champ - this year #9 in points, wife #5. Still having fun every race. We have a double season ender on 9/10 & 11, then the Bracket Finals in October.

Got to put in a couple of hours work tonight. Set the ridge on both ends. We'll cut and set the last 212 3/4" tomorrow. Then I can start raftering the rest. Wife came up on the scary platform to help. I'd like to deck but weather and time iffy. I should be able to get the decking next week, might just have to cover it up. I like the idea of the Permafelt but I'll have to call around to see if I can find 50' of it. The HD stuff is 250' and I figure I need 294'.

EDIT - #30 felt is only $20 for a roll, I can finish the cap with that. Looks like the guys doing the roof next door are using self stick underlay, way more $.

We're supposed to have temps in the 90s on the weekend and 80s next week. Sure, sure...

That Jenni in the car? Excellent - stay on it. 8 rounds here would lock it up. We'd have a hard time getting enough cars for 8 rounds of anything. Mod was our biggest class Sunday at 27 cars and with 2 rounds of buybacks we only made 7 rounds. I can't race with my sun glasses on - knocks .02/.03 off my lights. Be sure and post or send a pic of you guys with the trophy (and hopefully a check LOL). My Deb was killing them and was tied for #1 for a bit, but we only have 6 races this year with one drop. She had a "bad" race and only won 2 rounds, then had to drop this last weekend because of other commitments.

We're IHRA, so our Mod class is like your Mo-Power Sportsman (like NHRA Sportsman as I recall). We only run Top (electronics), Mod, Jrs, Motocycle.

Got a back bone now. Not much of a test, but I went to the middle and draped my 205lbs over the ridge and it didn't move LOL. Just 3" deck screws holding things in there now, will have to go back with the nailer to finish tacking everything in.

Yes thats Jenni in the car.. most likey will take 9 rounds to win it ? she got a 82 point lead ..at 10 points a round so might be 9 rounds ahead..but you get 3 extra points for runner up and 5 for a win..so we need to go 3-4 rounds to be sure ? ..ok back to the garage it is looking good ! sure hope it cool down some for you.. That heat would be real hard for me to work in !

Bones! Another bite out of the elephant. Got all the rafters up and the H2.5 wall/joist ties in today. Can't type much - I'm reminded of the amount of damage a 20oz framing hammer can do to your fingers. I'm down to 7 good ones right now. Boxing the eves is next, but I have to take back - if possible - about 5 2x6s as they are completely unusable. Nasty Grade 2 lumber. I had to cut 1/2" of "crown" out of three rafters to finish. EDIT - there's about 7 lbs of 3" exterior grade screws in that roof framing. Three in each rafter at the ridge, two in the plate and 3-6 more tying the rafters to the joist ends.

Good job. Now that it's cooling off, you should be able to move faster - as soon as you heal up.
