Do most cordless drill or driver sets come with the battery installed in the tool, like Dewalt/Milwaukee, etc? Haven't bought a cordless kit in a long time. There's no harm to the battery leaving it installed? I would think think it would cause drain over time.

Lithiums self-discharge anyways, albeit at a slow rate. Having it on the tool is probably is negligible, especially if the switch is before any internal circuitry. I guess you'd have to look at a schematic.

Both batteries, the one on the drill and the extra, showed just one LED when I pushed the battery level button. So I am charging them up now.

Edit: now that I think of it, there may be some circuitry even before the switch, since the LED stays on for some time after releasing the switch. Although this could be the function of a capacitor that holds a charge for a short period of time.

Anyways, I'm not worried about any of it.

My metabo came with the battery installed.

Thanks for posting the pics of the drills being received, guys. Glad to see that they are arriving quickly and in good order.

I had communicated earlier that we were out of stock. Just an update that we got more in today, still at this great price. So, get 'em while they last! Once we sell through what we have, the price will very likely be going back up.

I'm a little bummed. I reached out to woodstockva and he's got a deal with the devil, you know... Amazon. Ha! But, he does some top notch reviews from what I saw on his channel. You guys need to pressure him to support the littler guy.

Stay tuned for our upcoming deals. We have some good exclusives in the works for October.

Thanks again to all who ordered.

I had to remove a defective ground lug from my main panel today. It had to be cut off and with the main shut down I couldn't use my Dremel. Duh, no power. What to do? Hey, my just-arrived-this-morning Fein drill is supposed to spin at almost 4000 rpm! Turns out that yeah, that is fast enough to spin a Dremel cutoff disk. It worked great.

Kinda a shame about that plastic chuck, ordered one as a present for my dad. Otherwise I might pick up one for myself too.

Just got home and got to open 'er up! Thought I'd post a little review and slide show of it all for those of you still trying to decide or just wanting a peak even if you aren't planning to buy one.

First, the box:

Here's something that suprised me before I even opened it. The handles built into the case feel very strong, and it has handles on each side similar to a Jerry can so if you need to pass it to someone you can hold one handle and they can grab another before you let go. This would also let you carry two cases with one hand if you needed to bring a lot of Fein tools somewhere all at once.

XFSrIGS.jpg

The drill revealed. The foam insert has a place for everything included and actually has some room over by the handle for additional bits or other small tools to be carried with.

I've never seen a tool box with such a nice setup for storing the manual. It seems a bit ridiculous in fact to put that much attention to the manual.

My first impression was that this drill is a lot bigger than I would have thought. Someone earlier said that "This is NOT a compact drill" and they were definitely right. This is a big drill, from the body of the drill to the batteries and even the charger is very large.

WJ0AwQs.jpg

A closeup shot of the foam insert and drill. I thought it was nice that there was storage for both chucks so that you don't need to store it with one of the chucks mounted if you so desire. Some of my other tools with interchangeable pieces (Bosch 1617EVSPK) always require you to store the tool with some of the pieces mounted or even in some cases specific pieces mounted making it a pain when you go to put it away.

Now for the 360 degree spin:
kdNsxnb.jpg

RrksYpY.jpg

iaVNZ5Z.jpg

The drill may be brightly coloured but it does not feel cheap or plasticky at all. It's very heavy and you can tell it is a quality tool as soon as you pick it up.

c5tXF2O.jpg

A closeup of the chuck. I was worried about this part because I knew it was a removable plastic chuck and the other drills I had been looking at recently had metal chucks. This one feels good and solid despite being interchangeable. Once it locks onto the spindle it does not feel like a interchangeable piece.

pfjydek.jpg

A closeup of the "Gear Shifter". This is a fairly bizarre part of the drill. I find it very difficult to shift gears with one hand, and even with two it does require some finagling to get it to move. It also can stop in between positions and I'm not sure what the effect of that would be. It could be that it's a continuous clutch but I'm thinking it's more likely it would just behave as though it was in either of the positions it was in between.

Also a cool thing I noticed on this drill is it has "drill" settings on both ends of the clutch range. So if you scroll all the way down to 1 there is another "drill" position down there. I guess that would be pretty handy if you are drilling pilot holes and then sinking screws into very delicate material.

GoVvmrM.jpg

ToolNut was here! This sticker came affixed to the case. Given that, I was a little surprised there wasn't a loose sticker somewhere included for people who like to sticker their main tool chests with tool company stickers.

fl4wbbe.jpg

One final thing to show off is the clasps. They're nice and solid and lock in well. At least on mine you couldn't easily knock the case against something and have the latch pop open.

For the insane price of 169$, this set was quite a bit cheaper than my Bosch 18V Drill and Driver and feels much nicer. I'm really happy with this purchase and can't wait to work on a project with it. I too hope Shane will stick around and let us know when there are some more deals from ToolNut.

Oh, and one other thing. With the high speed it whines like no other drill I've ever used! It really gets going fast. I can't imagine how wild this thing would be with a speedbore bit. Would definitely need the handle attached for doing that.

Sorry, was away from the computer a bit this evening so I just saw your post. PM sent and I'm sure we can figure this out quickly for you.

@firworks, thanks for the photo montage. Who doesn't like some tool ****? Interesting about the Tool Nut sticker. That's usually included so you can use (or not use) as you see fit. I guess one of the warehouse guys got a little frisky. But I'll check on that.

Any chance there will be an impact for a similar deal?

Jeremy, I hit up our Fein guy to see if there were any other deals to be had. For right now, I think this is it. But I haven't given up yet. If anything I think we might be able to do something with a Fein multi-tool since that's their wheelhouse.

If you don't care about brand, we do offer a wide range of impacts from all of the major manufacturers that you can peruse on our site. If you need help or advice making a selection, feel free to shoot me an email.

We do offer very competitive pricing, free shipping on all orders over $40, no sales tax outside of NY/VA, easy returns, and hey we're tool guys so we know the stuff we're selling. We have a lot of guys working for us that have worked in the trades and have first-hand knowledge of the tools and their applications to help support our customers.

If there was a deal on a Fein Multi Tool I'd be way in on that. I've been wanting to buy one for some drywall repairs I need to do and based on Real Tool Reviews it seems like Fein's are very good. It'd be especially cool if there was an 18V one that used the same batteries as this drill I just got!

Has anyone heard whether Fein plans to release other chucks for this drill? Right angle and eccentric chucks, like Festool, would be useful.

Just in case I missed it, cause I skimmed thru all the pages here. This is NOT a hammer drill, correct?

Joe, Fein does not currently have a right angle or eccentric chuck like Festool. But Dewalt just came out with a killer right angle shaft that even works with impacts. We have it for just $30.

And, this drill does not have a hammer function.

Thanks Shane. I ordered the drill yesterday and look forward to ordering more from Tool Nut.

That right angle shaft looks interesting if torque is transferred efficiently.

Yes.. this is why I asked about the Fein impact as well. I would like to build out this system a little more.

I have a project-specific use in mind and I just ordered one of these.

I want to pair a good drill with a right-angle bracket to consistently bore 1" holes 6" deep in oak (up to a few hundred holes). I'm not sure what the right speed will be (Wood Owl Tri-Cut drill) but I figure one of the settings on this unit will work for me.

If all works it will get used by a bunch of men in a semi-outdoor warehouse setting punching dog holes in new (old style) joiners benches. Working a bit-n-brace in solid oak will wear a man down...

In any case, Shane, I really appreciate you being on here. I own 3 Boschs in 18v and I don't really NEED another 'caliber' of battery to keep track of but the combination of a good tool, a great price, and a good re-seller is hard to pass up.

Batteries are covered by Fein's 3 year warranty. So, you're good for at least that long. Presumably, like Festool, the battery prices will come done by then.

Festool's battery prices are now crazy low at $40-55. I could see Fein following suit. Festool and Fein collaborated on some recent projects. Fein helped Festool with the Vecturo multi-tool and Festool shared some drill tech with Fein.

Did everyone's drill come with 4ah batteries? The one shipped to me only came with 2ah packs.

@DR99, that shouldn't be the case. Please send me your contact information and we'll get it sorted out for you quickly. If you need to use the drill, please do so until we get you a replacement. Sorry for the mess up. Apparently Fein must have sent us the wrong item.

Mine came with 4ah batteries.

And yes the cardboard outer "box" says "Engineered in Germany" which is sometimes code for "but made somewhere else" however the label on the drill clearly says made in Germany.

Mine did not come with the bit-box, so kind of a bummer, but I got everything that was clearly stated I would receive, so that guy got a bonus. I'm not upset about that at all.

There is a sticker on the side of my case with a series of numbers, that I think strongly indicates, at least for my kit, that it was made in 2013. Again this doesn't bother me much but I wonder if Fein brought a lot of these to the US and they sat in their distribution warehouse unloved for a long time, and it was time to make room.

I think the price point on a quality made in Germany tool like this is probably pretty hard to swallow for consumers who can go to HF or Lowes and buy a 10-piece wonder kit (made in China) for $99 or whatever. Nevermind the superiority of this drill.

They are probably much more appreciated in Europe.

Good to know

That is comforting news

Same here but I still have my fingers crossed. ;)

As long as they honor their 3 year warranty I am fine

On the bottom of both my batteries is 2013-11 and a small sticker on the end of the case starts with 2014.01

That is fine with me. Fein has a 3 year warranty and I also have my AmEx extended warranty protection to fall back on if there are any problems
