Well a lot has happened in 9 months!! A text from 67CarGuy the other day made me think I needed to check back in here. I got quite a bit done over the past 9 months, even though it feels like I still have a lot to do. I was just going through this thread with my kids and looking back at how little they were when this all started!! It is amazing how our perception of time changes, it feels like I just started building this, but then I look back at them and see how much they've grown and reality sets in quick!

Anyhow, I'll share some updates for anyone still following along!

After staining the barn it was just about Christmas time, so it was time to decorate. The kids also got a cool new toy to play with for Christmas! And I got a couple of shots of the barn stained during the day.xmas wreath .jpg

Glad I could help shake things loose for you! The place looks great with the stain. I need to make some more progress myself before I post any more photos, though... Too busy with all of the little "fix-it" projects that come with a new place (painting, landscaping, etc.).

What's happening inside? Any changes with the racecar, etc.?

That Dingo attachment looks like it just might work, thanks again. We'll probably still need something bigger with a bucket to spread some topsoil after we're done collecting rocks, though, so I'll let you know what we might need and when. I know September is going to fly by if I'm not careful.

I also decided it was time to bang out the loft in the barn. I stripped the plywood off the walls up there that were originally installed and prepped to do the walls in what I had left of ship lap. I called in a favor with my insulation guy and they came back and trimmed back the roof insulation that I had originally planned to fir out and frame around. This made it way easier to start finishing the upstairs and also gave me a bunch of head room back!

From there is was cutting and banging up boards. I went back and forth a bunch on carrying the wood on to the ceiling, but I didn't have enough ship lap to do the whole ceiling and a run back to Maine to get more wasn't really worth it. So i finished the walls with the pine and decided on drywall for the ceiling and stairway. loft wall lf.jpgloft wall rt.jpgloft walls.jpgloft wall done 3.jpgloft wall done.jpg

One thing that held me up for a bit was wanting to maintain access the the area in the trusses that would be closed off. It is a decent amount of space and I didn't want to lose it, so came up with a way to be able to get in there. It works great to store stuff and is easily reachable from the stairs.

I'll skip the boring plaster work and just show ya where I am at now. I am all painted and mostly cleaned up. I need to finish some trim work, and I need to put down some kind of flooring. I originally was thinking of just putting down the big rubber gym mats that come in like 4x6 sheets. I am going to have a small office up there and my music gear, so i thought it would help dampen some of the echo. They weigh about 80lbs a piece thou and I'd be adding about 900-1000lbs in flooring and don't know if I should have that kind of weight just in flooring....so of course my solution is to do nothing and just live with the plywood decking for now...

Oh well, it will get done at some point!

Upstairs is looking good. How thick are those rolls of flooring you are using? I was contemplating something similar for my storage room, but the weight was concerning to me when I was looking at using stall mats. Where did you source it from as well?

The matting is right around 3/8" and I got the rolls right from Home Depot. I was going to go with one of the online flooring suppliers, but by the time I added in the freight to get it here it was actually more expensive than going through HD. I did free ship to store and had them drop the pallet in my pick up truck. I was able to just barely lift the pallet out with my Kubota and drop it on the floor of the barn. I took them up the stairs one at a time on a two wheel dolly with the help of a buddy of mine, it was not at all easy to move them, but they were full 4'x50 rolls at about 380lbs each.

Typical stall mats are 3/4" and weigh substantially more. I believe a 4x6 sheet is about 95lbs, it is almost double the weight per sq ft of the matting I got.

I did something very similar in my garage attic man cave in terms of access behind the knee-walls. I put in a narrow floor so I can crawl and get access. I have 2 light shaft dormers and I put removable doors at the outer ends of these dormers(very narrow - only 16" wide). At the other side where there are not light shafts, I have a small closet opposite the top of the stairway. In this closet I also put a removable door for access. Your place looks great!

Is your heated floor your primary source of heat? Electric boiler/water heater? LOL, I put the floor pex in when it was built 17 years ago but have done nothing with it yet....I have a reznor propane heater and a mini-split heat pump so it's plenty warm!

I have the floor heat running, but only set to 55 to keep the place from freezing. It is run by a Hydrosmart electric boiler. I also have a double head mini split, 9kbtu upstairs and 12kbtu unit downstairs that I use to bump the temp up if I am going to be in there working. I do have the upstairs unit running since I moved my guitars up there to keep it closer to 60 upstairs. It was fairly cool last month and I was in there a lot working and my electric bill was $64 bucks.

The temps here in Mass are getting much colder this month, so we'll see what it does this coming month, but I am estimating it will be somewhere around 150ish, which I can live with. If i just leave the floor set to 55, the entire building, upstairs and down, will stay at 55 with the floor running maybe a couple hours a day when the temps are below 32.
