Ok then my idea wont work if you are trying to side everything to match the house . How about using PVC boards as firring strips and skip the T111 under the siding.

PVC boards ? You lost me there.

Right now, my plan is firring strips vertical, including a top/bottom 24" o.c. and styrofoam between them. Then sheet over it with 7/16" OSB, it'll give a nice flat surface and some rigidity to framing in the back corner.

Eric they actually make some dimensional lumber out of PVC today . This leads to no rot no bugs eating it no water damage . I know they make 1X4's which would work for your firing strips .

Heck I'm not in the south I'm on the border of Hoosierville and an hour and aq half east of Cinci . I will admit to having lived in Green springs ( upper Sandusky ) for a while to much winter for me . Do you have a Homie desperate or Lowered expectations less than 50 miles away . ( No I'm not kidding the closest burger king to Green Springs was about 50 miles away in Findley or Freemont . )


EDIT Oh hell we were almost neighbors .

I will admit to having lived in Green springs ( upper Sandusky ) for a while to much winter for me . Do you have a Homie desperate or Lowered expectations less than 50 miles away . Green springs is about an hour northwest of you . We didnt live there long . Grew up in Fla moved up there with some freinds to get away from Fla . Didnt last long as Ice storms in May and Floridiots dont mix well .

I'm seeing a lot of people use 4' X 8' or 4' X 12' 3/8" Hardi Panels and putting them over the original sheathing then doing 1"-11/2" battens every 12" for a board and batten look.
The great thing about the battens is they hide the nails on the hardi panels if you nail 12" O.C.. It's a really great look and I have even seen it done on $1M + homes.

Pretty new here as well, but read the entire thread over the past few days as I had time. Really impressive what you've done with the place. Just the past week or so that I've been digging through the site has given me so many ideas of things to do to my garage. To bad that I really want to sell our house when I return from this deployment. I'll have to keep the ideas locked away for my next house.

I'm on page 13...working my way to get current. Very interesting all the different things you've done, Eric. I may have missed it somewhere along the way, but was wondering why you didn't epoxy the new floor you had poured?

Part of it was a cash problem or a lack of.

The biggest problem I had was the worry of it not curing/problems (like some others have had) and being a waste of money to taking it up and recoating.

I also thought of what welding might do to it or a cutting torch (don't have the latter yet). The thought of spending that money to have ruined by hot things falling on it.

Then there was the idea of painting in my garage and getting over spray on the floor. Spend money on epoxy coating only to have to covered with paint overspray.


I tried to figure the pros/cons and thought it would be better just not to coat it and put the money elsewhere into the garage.

My garage has been a work in progress for many years. It barely had any insulation in it when we bought this place. I've slowly slugged away working on it if I wasn't working on the house. This place is my haven from the house and the 3 females. I tried to do what I could, when I could (time/ money wise)

One thing I found that worked for me was a winter project. For the last 6-7 years, I would do one "major" project every winter. Last winter, it was a little bigger than most counting the new floor. Aside from that, it was basically some new paint and dropping the ceiling with new lights.

The winter before it was new floor in the wood shop side of the garage.
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52789 Prior to that winter, it was the bathroom which is not completely finished but it has a sink and working toilet, enough for the time being.

My mind constantly wanders and I get new ideas all the time. I try to figure out if something would work, how it would help the lay out and why change it. If it seems like a go, I try it and sometimes it's better on paper and goes back to the previous.

I worked a little bit Sunday and again today, beautiful out today. I could enjoy more weather like this.

I think I left off here. I made a trip to HD Sunday morning to pick up a few things. I planned to have more progress done that afternoon but it didn't happen.

I tap conned some firring strips to the wall, which eventually will be done the entire length of the wall.

Then I stuffed some 3/4 foam between the firring strips.

I followed it up with a sheet of 7/16" OSB, nailed on the corner piece, the starter strip and some j-channel. I made some progress on the front side and finished it up today. I had to wrap the fascia to add more J-channel.

If you get frustrated/tired/bored with the ongoing work, go back to page 1, relax with a cold beverage, and savor the feeling of accomplishment you so richly deserve!

An 8"x10" glossy photograph(s) should be made and hung in a place of prominence so you can see it every day as you go out to do battle with the old place and make it your own. Well done, and keep up the great work and documentation here on GJ.

Thank you for the kind words. There are times that I do go back and look at the pictures in my thread. Sometimes it amazes me what I have done and how far I have gotten. I also take into accoount, that everything I have done has been paid with OT and nothing is owed anywhere. For every hour I work on the garage, there's probably an equal hour spent earning an OT dollar to put towards the garage.


Now that I think about it, I think the time ratio is something like;

30% working on the garage
30% working OT to pay for the garage project
30% surfing GJ
10% sleeping/eating

The fence, ah the fence, hmmm the fence. The wife loves it, me, well . . . .well . . . it'll probably stay, the wife likes it. Oncwe I side the rest of the wall, the fence will have to get moved out a few inches or maybe replaced by a couple of new sections.

I've told the wife, when I get an enclosed car trailer, I'd like to put pavers down between the garages and keep it there. WE'll just have to see what the future holds.

You can always do a gate right there that resembles the rest of the fence. You'll get your parking spot and the wife stays happy. Believe me when I say I know how important it is to keep the wife happy.

The "flower bed" is merely three Hosta plants. She really doesn't want to lose them, which I told her we could move them. The thought also crossed my mind of a swinging fence/flower bed.

I'm not sure if it would work though . . .

Thanks but I got no skills, I'm just a hack with a hammer.

The shelves and dividers are fixed. The bins can come out so I can carry them from one place to another if need be.

No I didn't use any. I guess there's varying thoughts on using the stuff. I chose not to use any, right or wrong, that's what I did.
