no it doesn't. Honestly, I've never thought of naming it. I always tell the wife, I'm going out to the garage but there's no real name. I tell people it's for me to keep my sanity.

Glad to have finally caught up on this!
Looking really good!
I realise this might be a bit of work and in an uncomfortable environment but is there any way to run some power up to that large vent in the roof and install a fan that would 'pull' the heat out of the building?
A friend of mine did this when refurbing his house in Columbus, Ohio & it was highly effective.

I've considered some powered venting on the garage. I wasn't thinking of those vent, just letting natural convection take place. I had thought of doing it on the east side of the garage through the gable vent. My thoughts were using some type of solar power venting. Northern tool had some at one time I was checking out.

It seems like it's been slow going the last couple of days, different things going on and the such.
I have the standing seam roof tore off the back, all the decking replaced and tar paper down.
I need to replace some of the short vertical wall, it'll give me a place to nail the flashing for the roof into.

In the last pic, you can see the cracking in the chimney. Every block is like that with atleast 2 cracks. I wanted to replace it last year but it didn't happen, moneywise, time wise and weather wise.
For a little filler, I snapped a few pics of the garage shed. The picture with the shingles will give you some idea how big (little) it is.
This is looking up at the kneewall that supports the rafters. I'll have a little bit of storage up there.

Well today I did something that has to be completed before winter....
I even had the wife helping today. I appreciated it so much, I fixed dinner. . .

She came out and helped load the broken pieces in the truck, climbed and moved them to the front of the bed. I think there will be a little extra in her paycheck.
I wish I would have had a picture of the top half coming down. I broke out part of the first block above the roof line then climbed on the roof. I checked to see how much it moved and after a few rocks and a big push over it went. I believe it was just sitting there as easy as it went over.
As I went down farther, I saw how bad it was getting. I knew it needed replaced but I didn't think it was this bad.

Just before the wife and daughter got back home from picking up the pizza, I had it completely down. After supper, I cleaned up a bit, scrubbed the base and dug around it. The first course was partially below grade.
Loaded up and ready to be hauled off. There's also 15 five gallon buckets full of small pieces for the 2nd trip.

Not too much to add. Yesterday, I hauled off the broken up chimney, 2 trips, the load pictured aboved and another load, 15 buckets full of small broken pieces.
I added some bracing around where the chimney was. One of the rafters, had been shortened when it was put in and they added no support for the roof decking that was on each side of the chimney.
I climbed up above and screwed the old gable vent back on over the hole to help keep out bugs, wasps and bats (maybe). It was slighly warm up there. I also had to add a strip of OSB at the end of the wall.
Later on after it cleared off, it looked like it was going to rain, I went back out to work. I added some blocking under the eave and nailed some soffit up.
No pics for today but I went to get some sand and picked up 10 chimney block, 5 flue liners and a thimble to get started for the weekend. I grabbed some regular mortar mix when I needed some Type S. Now I have to make a trip to get that before I can start (in the a.m.)and some pieces/parts to work on my step-dad's trailer wiring.

Just read thru your thread, been at it a while I see.
the before and after of the garage and house are spactacular (lots of hard work and dedication)
you firemen are all alike work like hell on your days off and rest up at work
(I tried to become one myself but didn't make the cut)

Thanks, some guys have known to "come to work to rest". Anytime I have thought about relaxing like that on a Saturday or Sunday, we end up being busy as heck.

I spent more time working on the trailer than I wanted Saturday and then I called it a day early, took the trailer back and went up to the car show up town. They've been having it for several years and usually it's a good time to catch up with friends.
I wanted to get some done today but the Sun came out (like normal) with hardly a cloud in the sky. I felt I needed some shade and if the weather report holds out for tommorrow, a tarp to cover the block work.
This is what I came up with, a tarp, a couple of 2x4s, straps and some blocks. It might look silly but I bet it was 10° cooler in the shade.
I tried to lay everything out and get started. I will not claim to be a mason in any sense. I merely do what I think is appropriate, what will work and make it last.
The first block is down and progress came to a halt. It totally slipped my mind that I needed a diamond blade to cut the liner. I tried to use a regular masonry blade but it didn't work so good in the grinder. A trip to the True Value in the morning will hopefully yield what I need. I was going to go when I needed it but it was 10 minutes till closing time.
I put rebar in the corners, filled them full of concrete after the mortar had some time to set up. I also filled the center of the chimney block 4". This will create an offset in joints between the chimney block and the liner. If I didn't put the offset in, every third block, the joints between block and liner would match up. Right or wrong, I don't know but it makes sense to me and that's how it's getting laid up.
I didn't take a pic with the holes filled as I already had the tarp down and didn't feel like moving it for a picture.

Just curious, since the vent from inside is over 4' high, do you need to run the liner all the way down to grade?

I'm not really sure if it is required but I'm doing it any way. If it isn't required, I'm not sure what it would sit on once I needed it above. On the same token, I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

It's raining outside today and I'm glad I hung that tarp yesterday. I'm goiong to try to do some inside work today, maybe clean. I thought I'd add something else incase anybody is wondering or before it's asked, what the chimney materials cost.

Since it was raining outside, not alot but slow,steady, off and on I didn't work outside. I decided to work inside a little. I did some sweeping and rearranging. When I bought the rest of my siding, I piled it right on the floor, in the way if I had to work on a vehicle, like change the wife's oil. I bought an open box and had another. I tried to fill them up and stretch wrapped the rest. It was loose since I bought it and I wrapped it in 12 pieces, which is one square of siding. It all got stacked along with the erst of the siding pieces.
I then moved to an area I had worked on previously and emptied this corner out.
I piled everything up elsewhere. . . . .what a freaking mess.
It's supposed to rain again tommorrow so I figured it'd be a good time to do something I have been putting off. I'm fixing my angled ceiling, one of my screw ups that I did years ago. I pulled the foil faced foam insulation down and then the fiberglass batting. . . .then it was showertime.

Not much to report today. The wife and I got up, went to town, ate breakfast, she tanned (****** cooker) while I walked to the bank. We went to get our hair cut and followed that with a trip to the grocery store.
I laid up to block and the first chimney liner. I took it slow, all three pieces had to be cut and I kept trying to make sure I wasn't going to waste any of them. Once it each one was set, I filled it with concrete to make a nice solid base. I'll still need to fill some in, in between the liner and the block where it opens ups for the clean out.
This is how I left it for the night. I know it looks somewhat strange but there's blocking being used as forms while the concrete dries.

Got paged in at 0230 for a ruptured fuel tank at a factory, back home and to sleep about 0345. Right back up at 0630 for the start of a new day.

Then they went back up after they were leveled off and match to the rest of the ceiling. This included removing some romex and moving some speaker and TV cable.
I tried to have an eventful day but I got sidetracked watching Kokosing paving the road out front and talking to the ODOT guys.
I tore down all the ceiling joists in order to raise them up. Once they were down, I removed and replaced the 2x6 that they are nailed into.
Then they went back up after they were leveled off and match to the rest of the ceiling. This included removing some romex and moving some speaker and TV cable.

The gap on the left required filling with some 1/4" OSB. I used quarter inch when I did that wall since I was merely covering a wall that was already sheeted. I was wondering what I was going to use since I didn't have anything that small but I remembered some stuff I had pulled out of the attic above. It was 1/4" OSB that I had screwed down to the rafters to ease "joist walking" on my knees. When I walked over the the pile, I realized these were the ends that I had originally cut off in the first place.
Gaps filled and part of the electric rewired back in.
Out back, I laid up three more chimney block and filled most of the holes. I also touched around the cleanout hole and filled around the first liner. The rest of the liner will get sand around it.
Tomorrow will include a trip for more chimney block and liner, breaking out the old thimble and replacing it. A three hour side job of some lawn mowing.

In case some of you might think that my garage is never dirty or used, I decided to post up these pics. My garage in it's current state.
All that siding I moved the other day was sitting next to the car.

Nice progress on the chimney and non-sloping ceiling. If you used to use it for storage above, all the stuff probably just slid to the right side. Looks better now.

There's nothing stored in this attic, just acess to above, like wiring. I wanted to get some progress done on the chimney yesterday but I got side tracked watching out front.

If there is no storage and it were mine, I might raise the ceiling height a 12-18". When working on projects that need to be turned or flipped, more ceiling height is always nice.
Now stop looking out the window... although it is a once-in-a-long-while distraction.

I started the day by caulking the seems of the OSB I put up the other day, no pics. Then I started back on the chimney. I had to remove the metal siding from behind the woodburner, including the black pipe from the stove itself. That was enjoyable, taking something down that I thought I would never be taking down.
Then I proceeded to knock out a section of the old wall and thimble, that took longer than I thought it would. I think it took longer to knock that out than taking the chimney down itself.

There used to be a window where they placed the chimney.
I started the day by caulking the seems of the OSB I put up the other day, no pics. Then I started back on the chimney. I cut one of the liners where it would meet the thimble. I checked the fit and found it needed a little more trimming. Then it happened, the liner cracked. ****, it was junk and I set it off to the side. I grabbed another and cut it to fit. Once that was good, I marked a chimney block for clearance around the thimble. After it was cut and mortared in place, I was ready for the liner. Then it hit, I needed something to help center the liner and keep it plumb.
This is what I came up with, some different sized wood wedges. These will help hold the liner in place while I fill around it.
Liner in, wedges holding it, filled in around it then I laid in the thimble. I filled in what I could and left it set for the night.
From the inside, you see a piece of OSB that is holding the mortar in place since it is thick. I didn't want it fall out once I walked away.
I cut one of the liners where it would meet the thimble. I checked the fit and found it needed a little more trimming. Then it happened, the liner cracked. ****, it was junk and I set it off to the side. I grabbed another and cut it to fit. Once that was good, I marked a chimney block for clearance around the thimble. After it was cut and mortared in place, I was ready for the liner. Then it hit, I needed something to help center the liner and keep it plumb.
This is what I came up with, some different sized wood wedges. These will help hold the liner in place while I fill around it.
Liner in, wedges holding it, filled in around it then I laid in the thimble. I filled in what I could and left it set for the night.
From the inside, you see a piece of OSB that is holding the mortar in place since it is thick. I didn't want it fall out once I walked away.

Right or wrong I really don't know but it seems to follow common sense in my book.
Love this transformation! Just read your entire post and am very impressed with the quality of your work and in the time it has taken you. You've gotta have some background in construction based on your work. I don't remember any mention of permits or inspections, are they not required in your area? As a retired copper, I can smile when I ask this. Do you know what Policemen and Firemen have in common? They both wanted to be Firemen.
