Re: Garage Refurb

When the subject of garage/shop security has come up before in different threads, I mentioned that I put a piece of steel behind the door trim. I took a piece of 10ga steel about 10 1/2" long and 2 1/2 inches wide, located the holes and lagged it in place.

The two screws are 2" long and go into the prehung door frame. They merely held the steel in place while I drilled and lagged the others. The lags themselves are 2 1/2" long and go into the wall framing.

Once the plate was in place, I covered it with a 1x4 pine board I used as trim. I had to locate the lag heads and countersink a few holes for them.

Re: Garage Refurb

Once the holes were done, I could hang the trim, trying to make sure it was all plumb and level.

A closer look show the steel is barely visible and I doubt it will be noticed once I add some paint to the trim.

Granted, this doesn't make the place theif proof as if somebody wants something bad enough, they will get it. This is just more of a deter that makes the lowlife work harder and make more noise.

Re: Garage Refurb

Nice work. When I enclosed our carport, I put a piece of 1" OD pipe through the 3 studs with a plate welded to the backside at the mandoor. It terminates just inside the latchplate and I used a 1-1/2" long deadbolt. Probably overkill, but as you said...

It all helps - if it slows them down enough, they'll reconsider and move on down the road.

It also might waken the homeowner too. ;)

Sunday morning I went to Menard's to order the rest of the steel for the ceiling. 4 hours after ordering it, the order was staged at their steel plant and about 3 pm today, it arrived at Menard's for me to pick up. Considering the order was placed on Sunday, I thought a 52 hour turn around on a steel order was pretty good. :D

Re: Garage Refurb

I didn't get as much done today as I would have liked to, which is usual. I put three more sheets up and had to trim out one around one light fixture.

I made a trip to town to grab a few things like lag screws and bolts. Then it was tiome to fab up some more garage door brackets. I cut some 3" wide steel (1/8" wall) about 6 inches long. I ground off the mill scale and drilled them for the lags.

Re: Garage Refurb

After cutting some 1" sq tubing to length and cleaning the oil off of it, I clamped them together to weld.

While my welds are far from some of the guys on here, I guess they will work.

3 O/H door brackets and 2 shelf brackets done and ready for paint. I've already hung one door bracket inthe first row of metal.

As my typical luck has it, I ran out of paint and need to grab another can of Rustoleum 2X tomorrow.

I would be a happy camper if all my welds looked that good Eric
I've never* had a weld fail, but they often don't look pretty.

*When I say never, I mean "in adult life" - there was that epic fail when I lengthened the handle bars on my bicycle when I was 15

Re: Garage Refurb

Just a slight update. These longer shelf supports, I had to cut the plate off to use them. I failed to take into accouont how close the roof would be and I couldn't slide them in from above. After I got the hole drilled, I had to stick the sq tube up from the bottom and bolt through the tube.

I did pull back some of the insulation and start modifying an area to replace teh current O/H brackets.

3 out of 4 garage door brackets have been mounted along with a few more sheets of siding.

This is how I'm mounting the brackets in the attic.

Re: Garage Refurb

Eric your ceiling is looking fantastic, great work on the welds as well.

Regards

Thanks. I did have an issue when I welded them as I had to run out about 5-6 feet of wire. I'm not sure if it was a bad spot in the wire or if I need a new liner coming out of the welder.

I lie the ceiling, are you just overlapping the panels? Is it a pain to locate and cut out for the boxes and other things?

Yes,a short over lap of the panels.

Cutting out things hasn't been bad. If I had some surface mounted lights it would have been easier. :)

Re: Garage Refurb

I didn't do a whole lot today but I did run to HD for a new hammer drill and stopped by Menard's for another box of screws. It's been quite humid here lately and working just underneath the ceiling makes it quite warm too.

I pulled out the access cover to the attic. It got two coats of Kilz primer and will get some paint tomorrow.

I had to think about how I was going to do the frame work as it supports the cover, pictured above. Since I originally used 1x4 and they are only 3/4" thick, they are thinner than the metal and j-channel I made up.

I solved the issue with removing them and replacing them with 2x4s. I just recycled what I pulled down from the shelf and garage door brackets.

I started to wrap them with coil stock and realized that I had no white trim nails. I probably could get away with using some tan ones that I have as they should be seen. It's something that will eat at me as I know they don't match. . . lil bit OCD ? They are also aluminum and I prefer to use SS trim nails, the alum ones bend too damn easily. Did you notice I went to two of the big box store and could have bought some but I didn't know I needed them. . . . poor planning on my part. I believe the local hardware store has some.

Re: Garage Refurb

Nutts, have you considered using foam insulation on the door? Every time you open that, it is tossing fiberglass everywhere. It is making me itch just thinking about it. I had ten bags of fiberglass I removed last weekend and I had to wash my shirt twice! I do where a full face mask respirator, that fiberglass makes my nose run and eyes water.

I've used foam on the ones out in my garage. Since there is literally no storage in this attic other than extra siding for the house and garage, it won't get accessed often.

Re: Garage Refurb

Got the access hole wrapped and J-channel put up around it.

Took some measurements and cut the next piece of metal that goes around the access hole.

****! Well I screwed that piece up by laying out and cutting the notch on the wrong side. $25 out the window.
Ok this is better.

Re: Garage Refurb

Can you use that piece for the other side? This made me start looking for local barns that are falling down so maybe I can get the roof tin. Thanks for the idea.

If it didn't have the notch cut inthe other end to fit around the light fixture (for the I-Drive opener) I could have.

Re: Garage Refurb

When did you realize your mistake? After you cut it or after you carried back to the other garage and lined it up to install. I know what you said when you discovered the error.

When I walked to the side opposite of the notch to pick it up and carry it to the drywall lift. As soon as I reached for it, I knew it was a screw up.

As a side note, all the metal is up, I finished it last night. I added a brace between the middle garage door brackets.

Then about an hour with my garage door. It's acting up now as it doesn't want to go down or not down all the way. I'll spend part of today trying to figure it out.

Re: Garage Refurb

Not sure if you've already covered it, but why the metal instead of drywall on the ceiling? If its cheaper, maybe i'll do that inside my metal garage... Was going to insulate and drywall, but I like the metal idea better..

Re: Garage Refurb

I hate to finish drywall and since the garage is not heated, it can crack in the joints with the four seasons. Currently, my neighbor is refinishing his garage ceiling as it has cracked over the years. Now this is up, other than a few little details, it's done.

If you have an attahced garage, you might want to consider what the local codes call for.

Re: Garage Refurb

Access cover installed.

Added a cross brace between the brackets. Hopefully, it'll help stiffen up any issues there might be.

Should be the last of the black trim paint.

Ceiling done, walls done, trim done. I believe the only thing left to do is paint around the over head doors.

Eric: i meant to check in on your thread long ago and just didn't have time to read it all. so onight i just read about the last 10 pages and decided to post something and hope this hasn't already been asked.

i do like the metal ceiling you are putting in your garage and i couldn't see why you decided to go that route instead of sheet rock or OSB. do tell?

also is it just screwed or did i hear you might have welded some of the seams?

what is the cost difference between the metal (roofing material BTW?) and sheet rock?

have a great weekend

Your ceiling turned out great and I like the way you made your access covers

I have a metal ceiling too and it has 4 access openings. The size of each is similar to yours. In the summer I take the covers off for ventilation. I cover the holes with a fluorescent light grid to give them a finished look. I just sit them on the attic floor.

Cost difference between the drywall and metal, I couldn't really answer as I didn't price the drywall. The house garage is 24x32 if you want to try to figure a difference per sq/ft. The metal wall was 8 pcs @ 12', 8 pcs @ 10'6" and 8 pcs @ 10' I did go through one 5lb box of 1.5" screws and I bent my own j-channel, I bought a box of coil stock to do that. I bought all my stuff at Menard's and had some where around $500 in the ceiling. . . . approximately. All in all, price will depend on material cost for your local area but I believe you could figure it out doing some simple online shopping and math. I believe the cost for me was $1.95/linear ft.

I didn't want drywall, I hate to finish it and didn't want it to crack either. As far as I'm concerned, the metal is one and done.

The metal is just screwed up, nothing else, other than caulking around the brackets I mounted.

That is an interesting idea. I might have to try that this summer if/when it gets really hot out.

Impressive build! New around these parts, I've made it through pg. 70... will continue to wade through. Really dig the 4 eye, deep into a complete nut & bolt on a "fobra" build myself.
