Coolabah, I think I have all the additional tooling purchased now that I didn't have before needed to complete the gate.

- Spraygun
- Respirator and filters (non 2 pack paint)
- Small air belt sander

No decent break in the weather this weekend for any welding and we had a few things on anyway. So we wait another week. Have rain forecast until Thursday and hopefully some sun by the weekend. I need a full weekend to finish it up before we get to the painting prep phase. Anyway will see how we go.

I did potter about for a short while getting some measurements ready for a couple more overhead cabinets to the side of the panel door, I'll post pics of that when I get a bit further along.

Have spent a few evenings racking my brain to get the spindle assembly off the cold cut saw and tonight I finally had a win after coming into the garage after the kids were off in the land of nod.

I've posted a bit more rebuild thread here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=333630 but basically I've been trying for ages to get this spindle assembly out without breaking anything with some guidelines from another member who had done the same rebuild.

View media item 87456
A scrap of ply and a tyre lever and gently lever from behind the bearing and slowly turning the spindle around eventually got it out!

View media item 87457
And then I could hold it in my hand as originally expected.

View media item 87458
Then I could remove the screws holding in the motor assembly.

View media item 87461
Really could have used this saw to cut a heap of steel a couple of weeks ago :pimpflash

At least I can try to get it finished up now.

And I didn't get any of that grease on my pyjamas :bounce:

Cheers GB.

My son and I setup the base off my small roll chest cabinet as a bench area for him and somewhere to store his tools.

I cut a top from an old section 1/2" ply scrap and gave it 3 quick coats of water based polyurethane. We then added a 3" DAWN vise that I have had in the "to-restore" pile.

He has outgrown the Bosch bench but is not quite ready to part with it.

Time for some real tools for the young bloke GB, that is great to see.:thumbup:

Thanks 1/2 Cup, he is competent with a drill and impact driver and has been for some time. Tool use has helped him develop some fine motor skills for sure and he is very creative given some scraps of wood, a few screws or nails and he even raided from my stash some old castors the other weekend and made a dolly.

Was actually funny today he came and asked to use my drill, I had to reply and suggest he uses his own that he recently got from his grandfather :) Off to his cabinet he went.

Thanks Grizz, he loves being outside or playing/digging/building things and all that. Will serve him well as he gets older. He is only allowed to work with tools etc with me being around to keep-an-eye though. If I'm out his toy Bosch set has to suffice.

All, still on and off storms and rain here, so not worth setting up for welding to continue on the gate as I can't quickly pack up from that if it starts to rain.

Still plenty to get on with though. Between the above mentioned coats of polyurethane, I ripped down some old particle board sections (it's the third recycle for some of it) and started on some more quick and dirty cabinets. Only shallow at 9" deep (so as to not interfere with the panel door) but they will be good for vehicle liquids, and hopefully some detailing supplies.

Had to muck around notching in around bolt holes etc on the garage door brackets which is not ideal with particle board as it chips out, but I'll cover it with some thin 3mm MDF laminated board or something later.

So by the time I did that I only got the 400mm wide one up tonight. I have made the 600mm wide one for down the far end and got it notched ready to snug up and in the bracet at that end but need to locate a stud and make a bit of noise, so too late now it's 2300 and everyone is asleep.

Need to pickup a couple of lengths of board to make the long one in the middle. I'll have 2100mm (6'11") of cabinet run when finished. So more **** can get put away. :lol_hitti

Well this turned out to be more fiddly than anticipated, but finally got it sorted over the last couple of nights. Trimmed out around the door hanger bracket and got the middle section mounted tonight.

Those are great cabinets GB. Sometimes the shallow cabinets and drawers are better use for specific sized items.

Great job GB.

Thanks Aaron

What he said ^

Thanks Kirk

Bret

Thanks Bret, agreed looking forward to your new mitre saw bench build.

Looks good. I was thinking more room for tools but I see you have it set up for car cleaning tools. [emoji106]

Not sure yet shorty, I just grabbed the stuff nearby on the ground or other horizontal surface areas and put it up there. Still lots of reshuffling to go yet.

Absolutely love it Rod. I almost miss having a little one around.

Thanks Dan, long time no hear. I like your new shed build.

Thanks for stopping by.

Bit toasty here today as we head closer to summer. Not quite 100F but not far off (36.3C/97.34F). Insulation in the garage door is working well, 10C difference out to in.

Some more work on the gate today. Was a great cool morning for welding

Finished welding up all the vertical rails then started on the insert in the top.

Shiny metal. Looks great after removing all the mill scale. The rings we made a few weeks ago from some 115mm OD pipe that my dad had, cut a notch out of it and a bit of love with an oxy torch to bring it in at 98mm OD.

Pretty fiddly trying to keep flat bar in place while getting a tack but got there in the end with some welding magnets and a G-Clamp.

View media item 87919
Picked up a small air belt sander the other week for getting into the inside corners to tidy up before paint. Needed to clean these corners for the flat bar to tuck into. The Ryobi tool itself is great, the belts that come with it are ****. The belts I brought at the same time are also ****. So will need to find some decent ones.

View media item 87920
So the gate itself is pretty much done apart from a clean up lap which will take a few hours.

Next is to fabricate up the hanging posts.

That is definitely worth the effort, you will see that gate for years, at some point you will think, did I really make that?

GB, the ring and rays look like a sunrise -- nice touch. I keep buying 3/8" x 13" belts for the air sander and so far none have been very impressive. The 1/2" x 18" belts for the electric sander seem to have a better selection, with higher price.

Gate looks awesome, nice work!

Thanks hewey

The gate looks good GB, that belt sander looks pretty handy too. [emoji106]

Thanks BB, belt sander worked well on the few sections I tried it on. Belts were **** - see below ordered some today.

Cheers Strouty, I quite enjoy the metal work projects. I plan to update the fence along the kerb at the front of the house as it's showing it's age with the same setup pretty much.

That is a very cool gate. What color is it going to be?

Bret

Thanks Bret, the color is a Colorbond color called "monument", it's a matt black/charcoal color. It will match the downpipes/gutters and the rest of the balustrade railing on the house.

https://colorbond.com/colour/monument

Good job on the gate!

Thanks Jon

Very well done gate GB. The decorative bits added were worth the effort and finish it off nicely.

Thanks RM, the gate design is replicated almost exactly from the damaged aluminium one. Just made it slightly larger as you do.

Very nice job on gate. Let us know what you find on the small sand belts.

Thanks Shorty. I ordered from evil bay this afternoon some 3M Cubitron II belts in 60 and 80 grit. They are expensive but I was reading over on Roberts MP&C Shop Projects thread the other week some discussion about them (see pages 140/141). Will let you know how they go.

GB top job on the gate.

Thanks 1/2 Cup.

Gate looks great.

Cheers Aaron

Great work on the gate!

Thanks Andy

Ah never saw it that way Bob yes it does look like a sunrise. I've just ordered some 3M cubitron belts to try and hopefully they are the ducks nuts for the price. Not sure if they will turn up before the weekend though.

This is very impressive "corner". You have great skills  I'm going to read through your thread later today, at work.

Thanks for dropping in Mikkeli, there is a bit of everything going on in my thread. I need to go back and finish off all the little projects I've mentioned along the way and haven't gotten to yet. :lol_hitti

All thanks for the comments, I'm totally chuffed.

Rod, I did the same thing after reading Robert's post. Bought a few Cubitron 1/2" x 18" belts and they are much better than the others, lasting longer and cutting faster. I wish they were available in finer grits. I'll have to use up the smaller crappy ones before I order the Cubitrons. Even the expensive belts separate at the glue joint after a few years. They aren't a good thing to stockpile (hoard?).

I've used Gorilla Glue to reattach the belt glue joints, it works, somewhat. You can't load much pressure on the workpiece, go easy & it stays glued longer. I use a c-clamp and a couple 2x4 wood scraps to clamp the glue joint, and a piece of tinfoil on both sides of the belt, so the belt and the 2x4's don't 'become-one.' I leave it for 24 hrs.

GB: great job on your gate and best of luck putting in the posts to mount it on.

I've never seen a little belt sander like that. looks like a COOL TOOL to own. I like Ryobi 18v tools now that their batteries are decent and Ryobi's 18v chain saw is one to put on you list if you have any tree trimming to do. if the chain is sharp it can cut almost any size tree or limb.

cheers

Bob, I'm hoping Cubitrons are not another rabbit hole like many things become. At least they are a consideration when replacing stock if they are good enough. Hope to have them arrive this week and test them out.

Good tip driftpin, I've kept aside the one that split at the joint to try re-gluing. I had thrown it into the shop trash already before you commented.

Awesome work!

Thanks CJ, thanks for stopping by and welcome to the forum.

OK. It has already been said by so many but that gate is impressive.

Cheers HOTFR8, quite enjoy the fabrication work. It's just hard to put a weekend into that with a young family, really need to nip a day or two out of the office to work on these things.

Thanks drives, ryobi do make some good stuff although I am a Makita man when it comes to battery tooling. I do have some tree trimming to do, the 20" bar on my saw might be a bit big for that. Guy I work with loves that ryobi battery stuff though.

All thanks for stopping by.

Managed to get the posts fabricated today and to the point of setting hinges ready to weld up. Packed up mid afternoon once the sun came around, too hot to be in a leather welding jacket and gloves at that point.

Pretty much ready to test fit now. Posts will go in and be shimmed level and have some structural grout applied at the bottom which will also keep the steel foot up off the concrete.

Then clean up and painting play.

Probably another couple of weeks a this rate. Need more Saturdays.

GB: yep the posts, welds and hinges look great from my chair!!

Thanks Drives

Very nice! Look forward to your post of the finished gate and fence.

Thanks shorty, I'm looking forward to posting the finished gate too! (fence will be a later project)

Postman delivered these today, look to be made well. Likely to be the weekend before I get to have a play with them to see how they go. Hope they are ok, expensive small boxes lol.
