funny you should say that because I was thinking of painting them (on a cheap set) like HF does. I have yet to walk into a HF store and one of their biggest ones is only a few miles from my house but a few of the guys I know have their color coded socket sets which seems to work for them.

tape would be a better option for some good tools though. thanks for the suggestion

Q: How do you leave a crescent wrench?
A: I left mine a note: Dear Crescent, it's time we parted ways. We were never a good fit. I'm leaving you for an asian girl. A Harbor Freight Pittsburgh Pro, to be more exact. I know you'll miss me, but you'll learn to "adjust" without me.

A tool for the most part that is taken for granite, use it on a nut,or bolt, use it as a Mexican hammer, pry **** with it,stick the hole on rod or pipe or ? and bend it,its under appreciated.

You forgot to mention an adjustable spanner's main use of rounding off nuts and bolt heads. :D Much as I try to avoid using them in general, a good quality adjustable is pretty much a should have tool. When you're in a pinch, they're serve a purpose, and they're pretty decent when used properly. I'll never love the things, but I'll always keep at least one to hand. It's amusing to note how many seem to use them as some form of bending tool too. :D

Izzat what the Aussies, Kiwi's, Indian's and Canadian's speak? I hand't noticed much resemblance to "the queens English" Hmmm even in GB. Cockney? Irish English? :dunno:

:D I never said it was spoken well. :D

I am usually in a hurry so I just estimate the wrench length, take the square root of it and divide by Pi to figure out the gap. :headscrat

Needless to say I hardly ever use one.

The real name of this thread should have been, "Which color pill do you take for your OCD?"

That being said, I have touches of OCD, but I have never worried about this. To each his own.

U take it for steel? how quaint, just funnin, cant figure how to spell grantit properly, even with spell check it just looks wrong, hmmm and forgive me Aussies any English experts here that can spell it correctly?:headscrat spanner in the USA has an open end with a flexible joint,u just talkn dirty now.Crescent is a generic term in the homeland, even Yankees use it.no offense there bandit, cold in east south Tenn? u had me interested in moving there after u talkn up the place, and man i love the taxes,250 a year on 245k house, close to pigeon forge, damn, skippy
North East corner about an hour north of Pigeon Forge. Or as they say it here, upper east Tennessee. Yeah property taxes in NH were 5k a year. Nicer place here on an acre of land, brand new 30x40 garage, $385 a year. Hard to beat. I call them Crescent wrenches too. And Chanellocks no mater who made them are still channelocks where I come from... Let's not even get started on the habit of calling ALL bathroom tissue Kleenex regardless of brand... It's those pesky Brits.. They just got some need to be "proper".. LoL  Weather here is what it is. 70 yesterday with a chance of snow tomorrow...

I usually spin an adjustable wrench back into a middle position after each use so it is close to the right size for whatever comes next. I am different from many that have posted in this thread though, as I don't really have OCD at all. I do however prefer it to be called CDO, so the acronym's letters are in alphabetical order.

How do you leave a Crescent wrench? Well, there must be fifty ways.
You just slip out the back, Jack. Make a new plan, Stan. You don't need to be coy, Roy, just listen to me. Or you just hop on the bus, Gus. You don't need to discuss much, just drop off the key, Lee, and get yourself free.

For all you guys that close the jaws, think about this....when the metal expands and contracts with temperature changes it will throw off the calibration.

Jeez some people's kids!

I with Airdale if you don't leave room for expansion the calibration will escape. LOL

I generally try to leave them on the bench top or on the floor or nearest wherever I think it might be least convenient to find it the next time I need it.

That way, I have to go through all my tools every time I need just one. If you are OCD, then this is probably the most efficient way to work - it allows you to touch all of your tools frequently.

I put mine in a small box with a radioactive isotope, there is no way of telling where the jaws are...

Nah, just leave them where they last were used

I've started setting mine to commonly used metric measurements. Then, I write the size on the side. :D

After you are done with an adjustable wrench, where do you leave the jaws?

I always put the jaws to where the rack is flush with the edge of the wrench.
HA!!! I do the same thing! Don't know why, just seems right. We got a part-time vo-tech kid at work and I'd give him hell for closing them and now he does it too. He accepts my ocd.

Hey I was having fun reading this thread and laughing about all the OCD's, that is until I decided to check my own.

I've got several that hang on hooks in the workshop, and several that I keep in tool drawers. All of the ones hanging in the workshop are left open at whatever size they were last used at, but all of the ones placed in drawers are closed right up. Haha, and I never even realized that I did that, it must be subconscious or something. And weird that I only do it if it's going in a drawer. :headscrat

Not in the civilised world, calling a shifter a crescent is like calling a Subaru a sa bah rooo, it immediately identifies you as being "not from here" and most likely of below average intelligence.

Every kiwi I have ever heard say it says it like that, even kiwis on youtube. Of course Ive struck a few dud kiwis(more than a few) I'm in Australia, isn't this where you send all your cocksuckers?

Yeah mate, maybe you can substitute it with any derogatory term, others we might use are: ******, ********, *****. Not really someone who you would associate with voluntarily, someone you tolerate under sufferance.

No OCD here, calling a shifter a crescent identifies you as kiwi in my country and kiwi is a disease akin to aids or cancer, something needing to be eliminated.

Wow, that's a hell of an attitude problem you've got there. I'm glad all Australians aren't this bigoted :wtf:

Crescent is a tool brand not a type of tool, what you are talking about is an adjustable shifting spanner.

Sorry bud. Its a crescent wrench no matter what brand. I suppose you call them tissues (not Kleenex) too. If I ever hear someone say, hey will you grab me the adjustable shifting spanner, I'd want to slap em in the face.....

This is a very bad case of OCD
I have over 100 pair of pliers, pump pliers and adjustable wrenches. I have never given it a thought. I wipe them off if the are dirty and put them back in the drawer. Not once have I though about re-adjusting the jaws. It does not matter.
WOW You all have way to much time on your hands. LOL

I generally don't use a Cresent wrench or adjustable wrench. I have had them slip to many times causing busted knuckles. I have a complete set from 4" to (I think it is a 14") 14" hanging on my wall, all are chrome, and from many different companies. I also have sets of combination wrenches on the same wall, so I just get the right wrench I need.

The jaws are all closed. If I do use one, which is not very often, I always close mine and hang it back up.

So, you call it a shifter, not an adjustable spanner wrench?

In my country, anyone who calls a crescent wrench a "shifter" is generally identified as a limp wristed, loud mouthed old Betty. ;)

I only use a couple sizes of wrench routinely, so I welded a few crescent wrenches at the setting I need them. There is no question of opened or closed, they are always set to what I need. They are crescent brand btw.

I left all of mine the exact opening as SAE wrenches. I think I'm covered from 3/8" to 1".
Now I need to buy more for the metric sizes.
