Give it time, you've only been here a few months. This place will cause you to go out and buy more tools, a bigger tool box and want a bigger garage. It happens to us all.

Yeah, no doubt. I've already upgraded a few things since joining this site. It kind of goes against my normal personality, I'm the type of guy to use the same old tool or fishing rod or whatever until it can't be used anymore. However I find myself wanting some nicer ratchets after browsing these threads haha.

Three threads have been merged into one thread now.

No posts have been deleted in doing so except my own that I used to mark the threads for merging.

I see that now, sorry.
Just had my knee replaced with titanium parts less than two weeks ago and could blame the meds.
Not allowed to do work or move weight use power tools or drive I have been checking those things off since I got home.

I am up to 3 questions for the doctor?

What size hammer did you use to pound the parts.

Did you pre drill the hole before you put in parts?

What grit or cutting tool did you use to size bone to fit part.

At work I have,
3x 1/2, craftsman standard and snap on ratchets, 24" and 15"
3x 3/8 ratchets, snap on stubby, snap on fl80, and a standard craftsman
2x 1/4, a duralast flex head and a craftsman

At home I have,
1x 1/2 ratchet, HF standard,
1x 3/8, duralast standard
1x 1/4 craftsman standard

At work I mostly use power tools but My snap on 3/8 stubby is my favorite.

At home my duralast gets used the most, very good ratchet.

See, my count is not even 14 years worth at your rate! And I've been buying them... well; for a LONG time! (Possibly longer than you have been alive...)

Quick mental count says 9.

4 - 1/4". 3 of them are Craftsman and came as part of a set. One SO I found on the road.

4 - 3/8". 3 Craftsman, two in the garage, one in the basement, because I hate moving tools between shop areas. One Sidewinder, which is not a great ratchet, but is handy as an angle drive T handle.

1 - 1/2" Craftsman.

Non pro, weekend wrencher. Definitely not a collector. I like tools, but I buy them to use, not to look at.

Every one of those brands you mentioned should be able to be exchanged at the store... If it's a USA craftsman you can probably find a rebuild kit on eBay.

I didnt know about rebuild kits. Much appreciate that tid bit of info. Several of my craftsman ratchets are hand me downs from my late father so no way would I want to turn them in and exchange them for new ones.

Thanks again!

I have several ratchets from different makers (craftsman, master craft, Pittsburgh , kobalt ect... )but I just wished they would halfway work. I have worn them down and they slip a lot- very frustrating.

I need new ones :(

Also, the often only need a cleaning and an appropriate lube (Fine tooth gears don't like heavier greases, the old 24 tooth ratchets were fine with..)

Yeah, like Outlaw said, you might want to open them up and take a look inside. Often they are just gunked up and need to be cleaned & re-lubed. The teeth / pawl do get worn if used a ton and that's what the rebuild kits are for. Out of my 30+ ratchets I've had maybe 3 that needed actual rebuilds... And those were from estate sales where the guys were mechanics that used them daily I'm sure.

If you have a Sears Hometown or Sears Hardware (the smaller independently owned stores), you can try talking to the owner and see if they still have any rebuild kits in the back. Many of them kept them instead of tossing them out as per Sears directive.

Your bright & shiny chrome ratchets are being dulled by those old, un-finished ratchets. Please send all Plomb ratchets to me for proper disposal.

Brian
I have several 1/2" drive Plomb ratchets and decided to powdercoat one during the last rebuild. It came out pretty good. It's pretty hard to get a good picture of it with the shine.

God knows where you all find the space to store that many ratchets, i have 10 max;

4 @ 1/2"
3 @ 3/8"
3 @ 1/4"

And some of them haven't been used in years.

Here is my work box with my ratchets, I actually counted 18 with the 3/4" drive that isn't pictured. I also have to two wrenches that I don't count.

There is 11 stuffed into this drawer, I know someone's OCD is going to hit dangerous levels...I'm almost there but I need a bigger box.

Only six in the socket drawer, just my most used in here, although my go to 1/4 is a TL72 that is in the other drawer. I really like the 1/4" SK in certain situations.

Rebuild kits are often available for free at Sears, especially if you run into an older person in the hardware department. If they're busy - and even if they're not - I offer to rebuild the ratchet myself. They're usually VERY happy to have you volunteer!

Between 8 and 9 hundred is my best guesstimate.

Lots of dupes. Still too many I don't have, even common ones.
You have to do a couple group photos. I bet you can't they them all in 1 picture.
