Thanks shorty

I have been having computer trouble lately with uploading pics to PB making it a PIA to update my build

Anyway with the 2 frames built its time for primer and paint. The top piece of angle was just tack in place so it was removed to make this part easier.

After paint it was time for feet took a cue from Steve O's build and ordered these non marring adjustable feet and tube inserts

We didn't really have a way to lift the boxes and set them in so we moved the base into position put the boxes in then welded the top angle iron on. Plus I ran up to HF and got another box

Shop is looking awesome. Love the floor and the toolbox benches. I am not a fan of Harbor Freight but I too just took advantage of the pricing on the HF44 and picked up 5 of them to build benches out of.

In my last shop I had a lot of things hanging on walls and I want to put many of those items in drawers in this shop. I had a lot of wasted space and these toolboxes seem like a good way to store things like pullers and such.

Keep up the good work. Looking forward to more pictures.

I have almost a whole stick of 2" steel left over so we got some scrap 2.5" and welded 1 on each side of the right frame so I can mount things like a vice, crank stand or what ever

The next big problem was what to se for a top. I had searched and searched and finding solid piece of wood 30"x 120" was not easy and when I did find something I liked the price was stupid. When we moved into the house and I did my attached garage I had an old sears work bench that needed a new top. I went up to HD and had them rip a 3/4" red oak plywood doubled it up and polyurethane it and it held up pretty good.

This time I bought 3 sheets had them ripped to 30" and 1 of the left overs 2 4" strips

Since the bench was welded together I used it to glue and screw (bottom side only) the top together

I let it stay for 24 hours then moved it back to the saw horse's where I sanded it rounded the corners some and urethane'd it

5 coats later and several days it was done

I put the back splash on then secured it to the bench with wood screws from underneath

I think it came out pretty good for not knowing what we were doing. Dang thing is heavy and I have not started to fill the drawers yet

Thanks Mike that's quite a compliment, Thank you. I debated on box #2 after having the first one I didn't find the drawers deep enough for what I wanted but said what the heck if I keep changing my plan I'll never get it done. I'm not using it for hand tools but more for other things like tap & die sets special engine build tools and measuring devises

Nice. Similar to what I will be using them for. My hand tools are in my large toolbox but I need something for odds & ends, mainly things I took off my pegboard from my old shop and things I had hanging on walls. I like them in drawers much more.

Keep the pics coming, looking great.

Great job on bench and top. Looks like it would make a great bar, er counter for the FCCFBB&BS event.

Gerard will probably be hitting you up to use the leftover stick to build him a frame for his 44s.

Nice job on the top. I know what you mean about the stupid expensive cost on solid wood tops. You have a class act shop coming together.

The tops came out great and can wait to see them in person. I'm kicking around ideas to do myself. There's a lot of options to choose from.

Thank you guy's, Its far from perfect but I just want it to look clean and organized. I am getting some stuff done just not in the time line I want some of that due to me.

I had to work a VW show a few weeks ago in Port Orange a friend/ customer had a VW engine stand used buy the dealers back in the day. A deal was made since he was coming up for the show

We also made a mount for "a" vice for the work bench. I am not planning on using this vise here very much. I want to mount it on a permanent stand but right now it has come in handy and the bench doesn't even know its there

My grand daughter was checking out the bench top and Schultz jump up on it I had my camera in my hand and got this. She was grabbing his paw to make him get down as she knows he's not allowed to do that.. but hey it was the shop not the kitchen counter
I was just glad I got the picture

Nice score on the VW engine mount base. I looked for one for quite a while before I finally just built one. I had it permanently mounted to my workbench in my old shop and also made additional inserts specifically for various items I worked on.

I had a GM, Ford and Dodge automatic trans. mounts that I used a lot as well as motorcycle and snowmobile engine adapters, all so they would slide into the adapter as it made working on things so much nicer to have the option to rotate around.

I haven't quite decided how I am going to mount them in my new shop but I definitely will have to come up with something as I used mine a lot.

Great job, keep the pics coming.

Thanks Mike, I didn't know you have played with old VW's before :dunno: I had been on the look out for a while but just shopping. I knew this person had one for sale some time ago and just happen to ask if he still had it and he did,
This one will only be used for VW engines and Trans. . did you use a stand for your banshee's? the 2 times we have done my sons was on a bench just like I use to do when I was 14 but I did it on top of my moms washer and dryer lol

I've built several VW engines and transmission for sand rails over the years. Both 2180's, and 2332's. I loved using the 84mm **** cranks with the Pauter 4340 rods. Then throwing a T3/T4 turbo on them. Only worked on 2 actual VW bugs though and one Manx bodied VW.

Also did some Rhino cased transaxles in both swing and IRS versions using mostly Weddle gears and internals.

As for the snowmobile, motorcycle and ATV engines, I had an adapter that would fasten to the bottom side of the engine case on snowmobile engines and Banshee engines where they were split horizontally and a different adapter that fit for most of the 2-storke motorcycle engines that split vertically. For larger sportbike engines I purchased a K&L engine stand many years ago that I have used and love it. It is nice with either the K&L or my homemade stand to have the ability to turn invert engines when necessary and to have them affixed to a bench for torqueing fasteners vs. having to muscle them around on the bench. Especially after you spend a lot of time painting and polishing them and trying not to scratch anything upon assembly.

well its been busy lately one of the things I had to do was buy the wife a new ride. Her 99 Tahoe was in need of more tan I wanted to put into it. The prices on Tahoe's is stupid trucks to for that matter :lol_hitti I talked her into a crew cab truck. It's a 2016 with only 13k on it not a loaded truck but it has enough to make her happy. Plus it will make a nice tow vessel for the race car

The work bench has helped me get some stuff done in the shop like getting my street bug back on the road. But I had a big problem and that was constant trips to the house garage to get stupid stuff. Well it 's time to decide on cabinets so that I have a place to put the stupid stuff. one thing I wanted was to be able to buy more of the same thing if I need more and I wanted metal. After doing some research I kept looking at newage and then a VW racing buddy was putting some in his new shop and really liked them. So the decision was made Newage it was. I only figured I could afford 1 or 2 at the prices I was finding and then while goggling I found them at Costco. 5 of the wall cabinets for $499 a bit more than I wanted to spend but what the heck it's only money :eyecrazy:

now there is a long story to these. I ordered them from their web site on Sunday night They shipping labels were created on Monday and when I check Wed there was on progress so I called Costco. they called the vendor then told me they had just shipped and I should see tracking in the next 12 hours. Thrusday and they were to be delivered on Friday from an Orlando location. hell I would have gone and picked the things up :dunno:

I only received 4 of the 5 the other one is coming I'm told. and here is something interesting each box shipping label says 20lbs. each box had the UPS heavy over 70lbs sticker and the box says this on the side

These really go up easy you screw brackets to the wall then hang the cabinets. Once they were all level and where they needed to be I put 4 1/4" tapcon's in. I put the first one up then had some help from my sons

Not a 2dr Tahoe by chance?
Nice new ride and I'm glad she thought about it being a tow vehicle.
The uppers look great in your garage. The 44's would look good a dark grey. I just happen to know someone that knows somebody that paints.

Cabinets look great and at $100 a piece can't complain one bit at that. That one more step closer to a GJ FC gathering. LOL

Thanks Mike if you look at these stay with the pro series , I was drawn to the cheaper ones but my friend said its not worth the savings

Thanks on the truck it really is her's I have to ask to use it

There was 2 things that surprised me about this truck #1 weighing in at 7500 lbs and here in Florida that makes it like a commercial tag. I had to have a talk with my insurance agent and we made it better.

And 2 for as big as it is it moves well. Not real fond of the fly by wire throttle peddle but well that's what you get these days

Main thing is wife is happy

Thanks for the information JC. Just out of curiosity, can you give me the actual dimensions of the cabinets? Height, length and depth of each section?

Thank you.

NewAge cabinets are modular. So the width of both the base and wall cabinets are 28". The wall cabinets are 22" high and 14" deep. The base cabinets are 22"deep and worktops are 24" deep. The tall locker cabinets are 24" deep by 36" wide and 80" tall.
Here's a link.

The missing cabinet showed up last week  now I just need to decide where to put it. :headscrat I planed to put it on the east wall by the drill press so I can store drill bits and the machining vice. I think I'm going to swap stuff around move the DP next to the bead blaster and the parts washer closer to the door. I'm open to suggestions

and speaking of missing cabinet since it was taking so long to resolve the issue I made a few phone calls to Costco. Well I came home from work Thursday to what do I find cabinet #6 but I only purchased 5.
I have sent them a couple of emails informing them of the error. So I'll wait a bit before I say free cabinet

Also I was in skycraft the other day and these strip LED lights were to much to resist
So I pimped the place up some :bounce:

Great picture of the bench with the lights.
For location of equipment I suggest the blast cab on back if it's deeper than 24".
For parts washer, I like it right next to a door so you can bring things in or out without dripping stuff all over floor.

p.s. I'll have Gerard look at things and give you the final layout (for June). LOL.

Thanks on the comment of the pic. the blast cabinet needs to stay where it is as I have the air regulator and filter all set up there. But I do like your thinking on the parts washer closer to the door. I always rinse stuff off with water after washing and do to the fact I'm on a well parts tend to sit in the washer till drained off real good.

Yeah we may have to have a small FCGJ meeting here soon

Place looking real good there. That Skycraft is a place I need to visit next time I have week off. There's also planet surplus on east coast I need to hit. There's just cool stuff in both places. Its not like a have room for anything but be really cool to browse and see if any small items I can use.
