The clues are the reinforced hanging hole which Proto LA and early Proto Mfd wrenches didn’t have. Later Mfd and newer had reinforced hanging holes.
Thanks. The only post-'50 JPD's I have are a 4-inch Proto LA, a 6-inch P&C, and the 6- and 8-inch Fleets in my PENENS box, and they don't have reinforced hanging holes. I didn't know they went back to them later! Those whacky Pendletons!
Does the hole for the screw go all the way through the wrench?
Yes.

Honestly, this wrench is virtually identical to most of the youngest wrenches in my JPD collection, including a PLVMBALOY dated Jan '47. The only differences are the thumbwheel through-hole at the top, the thumbwheel being captively pinned instead of removable with a screw at the bottom, and the hanging hole not being broached. The mechanism, jaws, shape and profile are identical.

If there were 1950's Stanley catalogs available on IA/ITCL, I would have bet on this being from '57, not '67.

The thru hole on non-click stop wrenches began in 1958. If you look at later catalogs that sell rebuild kits, there are screw in versions for pre-58, and pressed in for 1958. Clik-stops all had the hole starting in forgings dated at least as early as 8/57. This is ‘67 at the earliest. I still don’t know when the thru-hole was replaced by a blind hole, but I’ve never seen one on a wrench with a length marked in millimeters.

Excellent details. Thanks, Etchase. I don't typically collect that late (the Handyman branding got me), but I'm going to bookmark your post. To clarify, I wasn't postulating that it could be a '57 so much as how the resemblance could trip one up - especially the return to a reinforced hanging hole - without the other details, as a remark on the endurance of the major features, dimensions, and profile of the basic wrench.

Sometimes Danielson would ship pliers with no handle embellishments at all. Doesn't look like there is a date stamp on this, at least that I can find. I’ve seen prettier Fulton’s. Anyone know when these were made?

A few that are in the adjustable wrench drawer;

From the same town, I think this may be the predecessor of the above, a little bigger wrench;

I think this may be the predecessor of the above,
J.P. Danielson did not spring from William Hjorth. They were formed around the same time (1903). Karl Peterson patented a plier-like nut and bolt wrench (dubbed "The Lightning") that both Hjorth and J.P. Danielson (and others) made, probably under license, otherwise I don't know of any relationship. Peterson was partners with J.P. Danielson, then bought him out and formed Crescent (in 1907). Soon after, J.P. Danielson formed another company under his name, so that by 1913, Crescent, J.P. Danielson, and Wm. Hjorth were all making crescent-type adjustable wrenches in Jamestown, N.Y. It was the Greenfield, Mass. of tap and die or the Newark, NJ of shears etc etc in that respect in hand tools history. Hjorth eventually died out, J.P.D. got bought by the Plomb Tool Company, and Crescent made it to the second wave of conglomeration before succumbing to the age of heterogeneity.

All of them were Swedish by heritage and, as an added bonus of trivia, Hjorth is the same name inside the BAHCO acronym (B.A. Hjorth Company) of Sweden, who also made adjustables.

J.P. Danielson did not spring from William Hjorth.

In my Oxford English dictionary, the word "predecessor" does not imply "spring from", it merely means "came before". I am pretty sure the example made by Hjorth is older than the Danielson example that is in the same drawer in the garage. But thanks for all the info anyway............

Here are some 8” pliers found at yesterday’s estate sale. I haven’t been able to find any date codes but sometimes they are hard to spot. They look GMTK correct to me.IMG_1787.jpegIMG_1788.jpeg

Most of the JPD information I find deals with the flat wrenches and pliers, not much on pipe wrenches. Found this one at a yard sale, marked “14”, very good condition except for the chipped end of the moving jaw. Any idea of its age? Paid $3.

I got this spanner at a car boot sale on Sunday. It shows no signs of use. Date code is J.8.5. and I assume that it came to the UK in WW2.

I don't think that I have ever seen another Danielson Controlled Steel tool here in the UK.

Here are a group of 6 slip joint pliers marked Fulton, but all made by J.P. Danielson. The top three all are marked with the 312.1 identifier as a supplier to Sears. The bottom three are marked with Fulton inside a box. Starting at the top and working down: #1 has plain handles but also a A20 date code. #2 has a grip consisting of a small diamond pattern with a group of lines at each end. No date code. #3 is same as #2 but has a narrow jaw. #4 has Fulton in a box, no 312.1 but has the same grip as #2 and also has a narrow jaw a little shorter than #3. #5 has Fulton in a box, same grip as #2, has two different date codes one on each handle, N3 and K7. #6 is the same as #5 except date code of 10 A 3

Plucked this 4-incher out of a box at the flea this morning. This is one tool I don't mind having several. Only the second wartime (1943), the others are prewar. I guess I'll stop when there's no more room on the Fleet rack hook for them. :)
