Nines: you've been a great enabler, but you need to teach us how to sell one when we are not using it. We don't like selling our new friends. :lol_hitti
drivesit - I support that statement.

But, now you've got me thinking that base 'would look very cool under BIG BLUE'!

Of course, I'll need a Bishamon Mobi-lift table. Now you know I don't have any room; so, I guess I'll need to move bigger digs.

I can't teach you guys to sell, I can only suggest uses for more! Like, one for ferrous, one for non-ferrous, one for coarse and fine steel wire wheels, one for coarse and fine brass wheels, one for buffing wheels, one set up for sharpening drills, tools etc and one for sharpening tungsten. Then you just need one in the corner for that guy that stops by wanting to borrow your grinder. There are more reasons but you gotta walk before you can run. :)

Not using one... HA! WTF does that mean :lol_hitti

Gunsmoke Grinder Update:

A neighbor took me to a Norton motorcycle gathering this afternoon and one of the guys there repairs machine shop equipment. I asked him about my situation and he told me that if it was electrical smoke, I'd know it because it would be very acrid and make my teeth hurt to smell it. I described the smoke as mild and a bit like stirred up ashes and he told me that it was probably oil. If it was him, he'd let it run and burn off oil.

I also had my neighbor come over and take a look and he pointed out that it wasn't that much smoke and it didn't smell too bad.

So I think I'm going to let it run for more than 30 seconds and see what happens. Wish me luck!

JCMT I agree, once you let the smoke out of an electric motor, resistor, ... it is an odor you'll remember the rest of your life.

I could always tell when there was a new guy in our group, they often tried to apply resistance to a 12v actuator, etc ..., through a low current decade box.

The smoke would fill every corner of the shop.

If you've ever shorted an un-protected circuit to a car's ground, the wire will glow red-hot and burn the insulation in very short order.

Oh, BTW - best of luck.

Nines: yes but i have 20 grinders so 40 wheels and you only named off 9 wheels and i don't have that many friends i want to loan my tools to. So since you are one of the best enablers on the thread can you name off a few more wheels because my grinders are like family? :lol_hitti

TM: did you get that stand yet for Blue?? BTW i really like your cartoon and old movie posts. cheers

JCM: Second the wishing you luck and all makes perfect sense to me.

I give up. I ran it for a minute at first and it seemed that the smoke was diminishing. I then ran it for ove a minute and just when I thought the smoke was gone, it started smoking again and kept getting thicker. Next, I took it apart and the stator was pretty warm, no burned oil residue on the stator. After putting it back together, it almost immediately started to smoke and the smoke kept getting thicker. I don't have the nerve to just let it go and run. Even if it does stop smoking, I'll never really have any confidence in it. So I'm going to part it out.

Since I want to have an 8" grinder in this style, I'm going to hang on to the parts until I find a replacement, in case I need any of the parts. If people are interested in any parts, let me know and I'll keep a list. Once I know what I can sell, I'll contact everyone.

Future grinder question:
My thought for Old Smokey was to have it be a buffer, with my 1/2hp 7" as a grinder. Should I seriously look for a 3/4hp or would a 1/2hp work well as a buffer/wire wheel?

RustnGrease: TM started a thread where he has a lot of links to parts on the first few posts. the link might be in his signature on his posts or i'm sure he'll pop in at some time in the next hour, day or week if you can't find it. some of the guys have been making some of their parts you are asking about so they might see your post too and give some help.

good luck

I checked ereplacementparts for that model [http://www.ereplacementparts.com/craftsman-39719581-grinder-parts-c-158286_159871_203375.html], and found a listing for 397.19581.

You may be able to find other models that shares p/n's with your grinder, by selecting the part and checking which other models are compatible. http://www.ereplacementparts.com/black-cover-p-973653.html

BB: thanks for the list and happy to see it. now my question is where is the best one stop shopping place for all those wheels or should i buy a few of one kind at one place and some of a different kind at another because some are specialty wheels?

of the 20 bench grinders i own (and i might own more or less and just threw out a #) and i also own many hand grinders 4.5 and 7.5 inch so i'll need the various wheels for those too because i really have grown to hate changing wheels or disks in the middle of a job.

i'm thinking of building a nice steel table with several trailer hitch attachments on it so i can put a grinder or vise on a plate and attach it and plug it in when i need it and when i don't it sits on a shelf so i don't have all the valuable floor space i own covered in stands and grinders.

i see there isn't a deburring wheel on your list which i'm definitely putting on one of my bench grinders, but i really thank you for the list. Amazon has 5 for $180 or one for about $60 so anybody looking to buy one might get a few guys together to do so or tell me the cheapest and best way to ship some to your homes and i'll buy them and ship for cost ($35 approx. plus shipping).

Nines: Yes i have a problem, but hopefully a solution is on the horizon and i'll post pictures or start a thread so others don't have to lay awake at night trying to figure this out. we all can't have 40 x 120 garages like a few of my clients and some GJ members do and even those guys need storage space and machine solutions.

All: anybody want to add a wheel or two to BB's great list please do and also add where we can buy one or more. i'm more for quality than quantity, but if quantity will get me and others better quality for the cheaper price then i'm all for that.

TM: Thats exactly it, Thanks i was out to wisconsin the beginning of october and didnt even think to look for grinders while i was there. I think shipping would be a killer. Thank you though!

Edit: After double checking my grinder it's definitely a 397.19580 1/3hp

Edit:x2 Also after looking at the 81 parts, the ones i need are obsolete and aren't the proper ones for mine anyway. Just my luck.

Rustn - I happened to be checking WI, I am planning a trip to visit family in the Twin Cities in December and looked for metro areas on the 'way'. I don't think there are a lot of Block grinders in that area normally, but I could be wrong, so don't feel like you missed out.

I sent you an IM, let me know.

I did see a lot of 'discontinued' parts, but there's a slight chance you can find another model that is compatible. That's hoping their charts may be wrong in your favor, incomplete if you get my meaning. :)

Well, another 1/2 day I should've been out in the garage/shop but didn't make it there.

Just before turning off the Sunday morning car/truck shows, logging off the intranet, and heading out to there, I checked CL 1 last time. {I have people depending on me to find them grinders. :D}

Guess what jumped up at me.

I thought it must be a picture the seller downloaded, but at any rate, I was on my way and brought it home with in 3/4 of an hour. I paid the asking price.

I asked my usual question before I left the seller's front entryway - Do you have anything else for sale?

Yes, was the reply; step around to the garage.

I'll be back with what else I got for the extra $110 I left with him; after I get the pics off the camera. ;)

$15!?!?!? Very nice! I would like to see the Sears/Craftsman sales stats from the 50's, 60's and 70's. I bet the Detroit area was a hot region. There seems to be an endless supply of this stuff there. :)

Edit: By the way, big day for my Brownies. First time in first place in November since 1994. That warrants an avatar change. :)

Let's hear it for the Brownies! :rocker:
1 of my favorite teams back in the 60's, when I lived in Syracuse.

I couldn't believe my luck on the stand. And it's as nice as the pictures. It looks new. I asked if it had been painted, but the seller didn't know - it came from his uncle.

OK, I'm back.

He continued on to say he had another grinder. I asked: "Another grinder stand?"

Yes and a grinder, came his reply. :headscrat Could I be so lucky they'd be CM, Block even?

Yes!

TM,
So, let's see. The trick is to publicly denounce buying anymore block grinders and then they fall into your lap? Is that your secret? :bounce:

TM: nice to see you still remember how to make a great deal on a block. 2 original stands too. nice trip.

i'm guessing the big heavy stand owner won't sell the stand without the rewired block that you don't want?

McB: i'm not sure i ever knew what your last Avitar was and thanks for telling me this one is your favorite football team. I can't say i remember a lot of the Brown football players in the past or now, but i'm guessing they were pretty darn good when Jim Brown was their running back in the early 60's when we all watched them. at least those of us that were alive then.

I don't remember the '60s teams either, but I do know that in the early '70s, an uncle of mine asked my dad if I was Browns or a Steelers fan. My family is all from Western PA and Northern WV - Steelers country. I remember answering "I'm a Browns fan." and he responded to my dad "Well, at least he is rooting for a winner." If only he knew what was to come. None of my relatives hit it big in the stock market either. One person guessed my old Avatar. It was the cam sprocket on an Audi 1.8T engine. If the Browns are the Browns that I'm used to, it could make a quick return. :D

drivesit - I really didn't do much in the way of negotiating, since his prices were hard to beat. He wanted $120, and agreed to $110.

You're killing me on the re-wired Block and stand!

McB: I thought Ernie Davis played with the Browns, but he was benched because of his health, and never played or saw a 2nd season with them. Imagine Davis and Brown on the same NFL team.
