Inside was even cleaner than the outside. Lamp socket looks original, but no way to turn it off without unplugging so I'll have to find an alternative socket with a switch.

Erty,

Here is a picture of my 257.191401 split-phase where the light was switched on an off with the grinder.

And my 397.19670 cap-start with a switched lamp socket before I replaced the broken switch:

If you follow the wires, yours looks more like my 397.19670. What do you think?

That will work and is good if you want to control the lamp separate from the grinder.

Or, move the lamp wire to the other side of the power switch, using an adapter to connect it.

Looks the same as your first picture minus the yellow wire in mine. I'll have to pull the top cover to see where it goes. Thanks for the pics.

The Yellow wire, IIRC, goes into the winding assembly. Yes, I found the wiring diagram.

Here's a wiring diagram. It may apply to other Block models, also.

you sir are the the man! 3rd one listed on you diagram (397.19581) is what I have. I guess it's safe to just move that lamp wire to the other side of the switch.

Stopped at a local consignment shop and I couldn't walk away from this 1/2hp Cap-Start block---with the pink wheel and sanding disc attachment, it looked too damn fine. I know I have too many grinders and need to sell them off, but this is my favorite of the breed. Clean and runs very smooth.

Cool sanding attachment. Any idea who it was made by?

Nice lineup, they all look brand new! Have you ever turned them on??
Seriously, did you restore those, or is that the condition you got them in?
Restored all three and here are some before pictures.

DOC: you are not a block hoarder. you are the probably the best block restorer in the world and to keep that status you need to keep finding blocks.

what you do with an abused block is incredible and they are worth saving as we all know.

keep up the search

BTW how's that light red maybe Pinkish Parker doing in the E tank? :bounce:

EX: of all the guys that probably didn't need a block with a sander, but it looks like a great buy and working tool so maybe you'll find room for it.

Fireman: very nice pictures of your blocks and Vette storage and garage.:thumbup:

Erty: congrats on your block find and if others haven't mentioned it your block's relatives seem to want to move in to so make some room.

I'm just a sucker, I suppose, for the 1/2hp cap-starts. The best one I ever had went to McBrownie---it just felt "powerful"---but this one is close. Just got my first Wissota grinder (branded Milwaukee), and those are pretty nice but doesn't have the torque of a block cap-start or the smoothness of a vintage Baldor. Time to thin the herd....

Ex,

I agree with that one feeling solid. It is really smooth and the only thing I did to it was repaint the center tin. I still have it and it will get a belt sander attachment eventually.

I bought this one on a heavy duty stand I wanted for a vise along with an old Delta scroll saw on a stand. Just sent it to Minnesota.

Picked up this incredibly clean round top 1/3 today. And for all the vise aficionados a very clean Morgan Chicago 150. Spent a little more than I was hoping for but this one is nice! 1966 date

JR: two nice quality items and i probably like that vise more, but the round top with the metal framed shields is my favorite version of the blocks.

Waltrip: if i remember correctly you have a 3/4 block otherwise i'd have to question you sending the 1/2 hp commercial block down the road. or is it to your dad or brother?

That Morgan is no joke, my back is hating me right now. I just love a good Morgan and couldn't pass it up. Jaws are like new and the slide is hammer free.

I didn't have a round top before, but its not like I needed another 1/3 HP. Doesn't have the accessories, but the knock outs are still 100% in tact, so its like it never had them. Otherwise I may have passed, or given it more time for maybe a little better price.

I have a 3/4 and 1/2 commercial blocks on original stands.

I've sold three 1/2 commercial blocks in the past 6 months. One was to my brother and two went up North.

I really like buying them and returning them to like new condition. Just don't want to wake up one morning with 20 in my shop.

That is a superb looking machine and my birth year, interested in selling? My 1/2-HP and 1/4hp round tops need a 1/3rd hp brother. .lol

Wow, Jrobb! That is one clean block grinder.

My one and only block grinder is the same model number and looks just like it, except for the missing eye shield, other eye shield cracked, dirt, grime, surface rust, grooved tool rests, etc.

Well, I guess mine does not look anything like yours.

Great Find!
