I've read everything in the news everyone else has about Pitbull attacks and yet, every single person I've ever known who has had one has said they're sweethearts, theirs has never bitten anyone and many of them want to be a lap dog.

My belief is there are no bad dogs but way too damn many bad owners. I suppose that just like in humans there must be the occasional dog-Jeffrey Dahmer or dog-Ted Bundy, but for the most part dog's personalities reflect how they've been raised, socialized (or not), and the time taken to interact with them.

Very glad you guys; and a lot of others, have love bug pitbulls. Give them a belly rub or a scratch behind the ears for me.

I saw the same look on my sons face when I made him stand with the Budweiser Donkey at a Nascar race.

This is Major he's a 5yr old Blue Nose Pit. Very friendly and mild temperament, aka very lazy.

The first picture is Pierce.... he is the official shop dog as my friends house is attached to the shop.... he is always in the shop, or close by. He has a soft bed outside the service bays and when it is cold out we will put his bed on the lift in the middle bay and raise it up so it gets the sun thru the door.

People come by just to visit him.... he is a bit of a celebrity in town as he is frequently seen in the back of a 66 Mustang ragtop, he is also smarter than most of the people I deal with.... he is very smart.

The other two are my current charges, they accompany me to work most days, where they will follow Pierce down to the river for a swim or out into the woods to see what poor woodland creature they can terrorize.

Look like full black Labs to me...It's funny how many different faces a Labrador has at any given second. They can go from looking like a hound dog to a Lab to somethingelse in the blink of the eye. The boxy, ears up and inquisitive is my favorite face.

Here's the 'throw it or give it back face.'

A long, long time since I started this thread in 2009. Sooner, my avatar blonde Lab has been gone almost 5 years now. I think of him - my lifetime best friend - every day.

Joey, the little phoo-phoo miniature poodle is my buddy now. He's super devoted. Goes with me everywhere except the grocery store. Gets a ton of attention riding in the basket at Home Depot. I never ever thought I'd be the stereotypical "old guy with little dog"! But at least I haven't (yet) put a basket on my bike to carry him like my dad did with his little dogs. I'll have a big dog again but in NO hurry. I hope Joey lasts another 10 years, but of course he won't. He's already 12.

Dan, I have owned several labs over the years. I always admired your avatar pic. He looks like he had that typical large head and heavy boned body that I desired in a lab. I hunted my dogs. How big was your old boy? Paul

Not my dog but wanted to share out of respect.

I'm sure many here at GJ have watched Andrew Camarata on Youtube. If you have, you know he's a dog person and has a few garage dogs as they're in nearly every video. If you have watched recently, you've known that Levi was getting old.

Andrew posted this video yesterday as a memorial to Levi. . . . probably one of the best shop dogs to ever grace a work area.

Dan, our mini poodle, Gigi, was 19 when she walked off into the sunset.
From your lips to God's ears.

I know little dogs live longer than bigger dogs so that's in his favor. We live in an area with coyotes so I have to go out with him every time he pees. He's such a devoted little guy. I tell him we have a deal, he looks out for me and I look out for him. It's almost like he understands. Gives my hand a little lick and looks at me.

Thanks for the kind words. Sooner weighed in about 102-103 at the end of his life. I thought he was probably overweight but vet said not much. Said he was one of the largest pure Labs he'd ever seen and that he'd have shown well except he was just too big for the standard. Vet said he probably should have weighed in the low 90's in his prime - which he did til he turned about 10 years old. I lost him at 11-1/2 and it still kills me. Rest in Paradise, my boy, til I can join you I hope.

Dan, I know exactly how you feel about Sooner. My Scooter, (who I just followed your lead and made my avatar pic) has been gone 4 years now. I miss him every day. I have two great dogs now, who I love with all my heart, but Scoot was the one. I got him when I was in college, and except for class and work, he went everywhere with me. He was never on a leash, and never needed to be. he stuck close to me, and he got along with everyone and everything.

He was the runt of his litter, and had a lot of health problems, but I got to share 7 great years with him, before those problems got the upper hand. He would have been 13 in 3 weeks.

What we both wouldn't give to have those extra years with our fuzzy friends.

Dogs are nearly perfect in my eyes. I truly wish I were the man my dogs thinks I am.

Well, the old gal is approaching 13 years old, which is at the top of scale for the average life of a German Shepherd. Unfortunately her days are filled with rest. Her guarding days are pretty much over. The garage is quiet.

In the eleven years that we have been together, things started out interesting and eventually moved to a wonderful companion stage.

She came to me as a 17 month old rescue. Never had a rescue before and never a female. She was fine for the first two days and then developed into what the neighbors summarized my new dog as Cujo, which she was. It took a lot of time, effort and training to bring her around, but she turned into a dog that now enjoyed other dogs and people. Not one bite! It was a lot of work, but I trained her by voice and hand commands, both on and off leash. Amazing dog. Before the training, I had to figure out a deeper issue.

What I did not know when I got her was that she was very sick. She had EPI, which means that she was not producing enzymes to break down her food for absorption. In other word she was slowly starving to death and she was in pain everyday. It took over 9 months of trying and several specialists to get the diagnose right. In the meantime, she went from a healthy 60 lbs (small Shepherd) to 30 lbs. She looked like the poster dog in the abuse commercials. Once we started treatment, it reversed her symptoms and her health returned fairly quickly. The medicine fix for this condition is life long.

So now what is happening, well adding to her EPI, she has spinal disease, tumor on her liver and renal failure. She went through a several day kidney flush that did help, but I cannot do that to her again. Being basically trapped in a small cage for days with her spinal disease was very difficult on her.

So now it’s rest. Her daily walks are down to two and each one is somewhat short. Step climbing is difficult because one rear leg has minimal strength.

So her days are now for rest and for us to enjoy our remaining days with her. Her days of following me everywhere or her alerting me of strangers approaching are sadly gone, but as I type this post, I still have a furry friend at my feet.

So enjoy what you still have today, because tomorrow may be different.

This post is not to be sad but more of a wake up call to appreciate our four-legged buddies while we have them.

This is our 4 year old Chocolate Lab Desi (our cat is named Lucy), he is a really nice dog but he's the Derek Zoolander of dogs. He's really, really good looking but he's not the sharpest crayon in the box but then neither am I. He's my buddy but at heart he's a Momma's boy and follows my wife everywhere.

Our previous lab, a Fox Red named Molly was super smart and was with us for 16 1/2 years. She was active and with it right up to the end. I miss her every day. They say if you are lucky you get one truly great dog in a lifetime and she was mine.

I've got 3 that like to hang with me. But I'll feature hank. He's been a loyal companion for 18 years. I think he is corgis mixed with golden retriever. But, he sure is funky looking. One day, I was in the garage, and I heard something eating the dog food. It was hank, as a puppy. Someone just dumped him. From that day on weve had some good times. These days, he mostly chills. He is blind and def, but still has a lot of *****, especially around dinner time!20200519_164737.jpg

It’s shame that happens but at least he found a long term bed and breakfast at your home.
At first, I tried to find his owner. We posted fliers, called vets, etc.. no one ever came forward. At the time, I had 4 other dogs. I really didn't want 5 dogs. Hell, I didnt want 3 dogs!! But I'm glad we kept him. He doesn't have many years left. I dont think we will ever be prepared for the loss. He is family.

I have had three golden retrievers. They are family and part of the pack. IMO one of the best breeds out there. Two of them were rescues from the local shelters and the first was picked from a box of puppies in the back of a truck. In January no less.
