Well here's some of what I've picked up via fleabay and the local marts (and here) over the past month or so.

jul12rat.jpg

Top to bottom 1/2 drive - Indestro Super, Allen, Bonney, NBM, Mac, None Better

jul38rat.jpg

Top to bottom 3/8 & 1/4 drive - Blue Point, Craftsman, Allen, Husky, Snap-On, Armstrong, no name

That brings the ratchet count to 217 so far.

tapndie.jpg

Metric Tap & Die set, USA made (Magna?), missing some taps, but for $15 I'm not gonna complain...

Very neat!!!!

It went for a lot, more than I wanted to spend, but towards the end I decided I was going to have it no matter what, but my max bid wasn't far from what it went for. There is a 28 catalog on now, and I have that one. I got my 28 for $50 on a Buy It Now, a week later another went for $660! The 29 is quite a bit rarer than the 28. Catalogs aren't selling well right now, but it seems a few people really wanted this one.
This was the auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270253486176&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=017

I will be scanning the entire catalog over the next few days, and will make a thread with every scanned page.

Sweet! Can't wait to see it! With those kind of prices, I would be tempted to scan it and then sell it to get more money to buy, more stuff!!!!

KLars1, you got yourself one hell of a deal on that set!

Some of my recent purchases:

3d3a_1.jpg

Stubby driver with long shank, according to the description the guy had this put together for GM distributor caps. I'll be using it for VW Golf MK IV airbag release.

61b8_1.jpg

Some 1/4" Snap-on extensions and flexible-end carb adjuster. Don't work on carbs often, but this is for tight spots and hose clamps. i think this lot went for $31 too!

2318_1.jpg
]

Snap-on 12" hard handle 3/8" drive breaker bar. This is going to get a ratchet flex head soon, i already have another like this, and i have a bent flex head 3/8" ratchet with an orange hard handle too. My second 1/2" breaker bar is also getting a flex ratchet head.

I do like my Snap-on orange hard handles..

I also just got a nice mint condition '79 GF720, pics soon.

Holy Cow, I had no idea those catalogs fetched so much bread.

Exchange rate works well in my favour. It is a bit of an obsession. (ok, a full-blown obsession) but while i'm young, free and earning i want to make the most of it!

I don't know know many guys my age with a set of tools/box like mine, especially ones that've paid for it all themselves. I've been working full-time for a year and have paid for everything except two socket sets myself. Makes me smile when i look at my box and all my tools, and i get that satisfaction of knowing my hard work paid for it all. :)

It keeps me smiling as my collection grows. :)

Amen to that. Not owing (or owing much) for your collection is the way to go. Much of the SO stuff that comes through place of work is by guys that bit off more than they could chew.

I have an account with my Snap-on man. When i left my last shop i called him to tell him where i'd be working, asked if i could meet him somewhere to pay him etc..

I've tried to pay him, but he didn't call me back, didn't answer my calls and doesn't come to the shop i'm at now. (literally down and across the street from the old shop, maybe 200 yards.) so he hasn't got the money. I've tried chasing him, i'm not going to keep chasing him to pay him. If he wants the money, he can come get it. If not, i'll keep it.

We had a matco guy stop by a shop I worked at and asked if we wanted him to come by weekly. I was like sure lets see what ya got. He gave us $500.00 credit and I grabbed about $400.00+ worth of stuff and a catalog. We told him to stop buy on friday afternoons after we got paid, never saw him again.

I know what you mean. When I was wrenching at a car dealership, I had my tools and box paid for. Pretty much had everything I needed for doing just about every basic repair to the cars I was working on. Now, that I have changed to heavy equipment I am not in that nice cozy debt free boat. Bigger box now, bigger tools, bigger debt. One more year of school and I will take care of that right quick. I hate having that hanging over my head.

It seems like the mechanics conundrum; you can't make money without tools but many times you have to go into debt to get them and off the truck, they are expensive! Damned if you do; damned if you don't! I feel bad for these techs that are making less and less money; they're buying power (and standard of living) seems to be lower then in the past!

That's why i'm doing it while i have the money to. I pay rent, which is 40% of what i make from work, and have for food and everything, which doesn't always leave that much for tools. But i know that once i move i'll have truck payments and insurance as well as rent and living expenses.

Making money costs money, you have to pay for tools to make a living in the auto industry. It ***** in that way, but when you get a nice private job and the money goes right in your pocket, that's pretty good.

Anyway, onto the latest purchase:

Snap-on 13mm nut driver. The sets now only go up to 12mm for some reason. Might track down a 14mm too..

I'd say the socket is probably snap on, but the square extension/T-bar is most likely not.

I would agree with that, It appears to be to large for spark plugs but Im just going off what the listing said until It gets here. It does look like a SO impact socket with some sort of cheap T handle.:headscrat

Here are a few things I picked up, new snap on 1/4 extensions, wobble ends, and I am still waiting for the 1/4 plomb to be in this week. I got the 30 tooth kits from snap on and rebuilt all of the hi-lok ratchets, they work great. A guy gave me the snap on plates for free, but I like the older one's like on my box and side box...

Mind you Moose I'm biased, but these things really fit well in your hand and are easy to maneuver in tight spaces.

They were the "cats ***" must have air tool in the late 70's and 80's but for some reason went out of favor. I've used this type since I first saw one on a MAC truck in 1972 and have preferred the model ever since.

They were made in Japan and were sold under the SUN, Rockwell, Rockford, Blue Point, CP, Rodac and Florida Pneumatic brands. Florida Pneumatic still carries it in their catalog.

New ones show up on e-bay quite regularly for under $20.00 -- I've seen many good used models go for less than $5.00

Geez... that is a cool tool. Why did they ever go out of favor? Anyone know?

Please, call me Moose. :)

I do buy from eBay UK, fairly often. I just find some great deals from the US, and the exchange rate makes them even sweeter. I get most of them past customs without duty too. Some stuff just isn't found often on eBay UK.

eBay UK, Hows eBUK sound???:lol_hitti

Thanks Moose, I might just try that myself. I'd forgotten about that luvvly exchange rate :) and I have enough friends in the US to do your trick with your friend from Georgia. :)
