3 lengths of conduit pull out from under the bench top. Large sheets of plywood, drywall, etc. can overlap. Set the circular saw so it does not cut into the conduit. the 2x4's support the work piec so it stays at the same level and does not fall after cut. Like having a saw horses off the side. Put casters on everything, that way you can move around the shop or outside so the saw dust etc. doesn't make a mess inside.

What is the cutout on the right side for?

place to sit to clean my guns. plan to make a stool out of the huge crankshaft you can see in the background of one of the pics. I have a friend that works for Don Schumacher and that is one of their old cranks from a top fuel car.

jzwhite, do you mind posting an underside picture of how the conduit is supported? I may steal your idea for a free standing wood working bench I have.

Jz, like that slide out. I may try that on one of mine. How did you fasten the conduit to the 2×4?

I'll get some underside pics in the next day or so. Glad you like it. About forget how the underside was put together. There are 2 sizes of conduit where a smaller size slips inside the one you see for guides. So check back I'll get some more info.

I like the idea with the conduit. I may just have to steal that one for later on.

The benches you show in the last picture.......are those lights in the front of the bench doors, or is it just the way the camera took the picture? The garage looks super though. Very nice indeed.

I'll play. Here is my current bench I built several years ago in my Moms garage. I see lots of good ideas in this thread I will be borrowing in the fall when the wife and I buy a house and I get my two car garage at last. I have some great ideas for the new sectional bench, but here is what I have been working on for the past several years
Guess I don't have any of just the bench, just accidental inclusions while taking pics of other projects taking place on it

for my new one I am envisioning a sectional workbench with sections dedicated to specific tasks. Imagining a 20' wall to work with, I would do 4',4',6',6' with dividers of peg board between each section. first 4' section would be dedicated to hand loading and gun work, second would be for electrical and wiring projects, solder station, etc. 6' would be general stuff and the last 6' would be the welding table

I was able to nab 7 30"x60" slabs from a salvage auction. They have holes in them from previous users but for $100 for the lot I took em and ran!

Here are a few of the work bench's Ive been picking up at auction over the last few months for the house Im buying. These are going into the 30x25' garage once I get the house.

My "Cool box", This started as a stand up food cooler that I got for free. All heavy duty stainless steel construction. I gave it a flap wheel make over.

This I just bought yesterday: Heavy Duty Fabrication Table; in Good Condition, table measures 24" W x 10' L x 33 1/2" H. Top plate measures .900 thick, Legs and Support sections are made of 3" x 3" square tubing x 1/4" wall, bottom of each leg has a 4" x 6" Plate 1" thick with adjustment screws for leveling, steel top has been Blanchard ground on the top and bottom
1zmmbfa.jpg

I also have a 5' long stainless steel bar table with ice container, sink and spill tray that will be a bar and kegerator storage, a catering truck aluminum bodied with stainless steel top prep/storage station, a big all steel rolling bench with stainless top that came from the Fisher body plant and a Jesse James Mac toolbox.

I plan on cleaning up and repainting all the bench's black and polishing up the stainless steel. I want wall to wall work bench's all roughly the same height. The bonus with auctions are I got everything pretty cheap and they will last a lifetime.

My workbench project started out because of this purchase and a need to have a place to put it.

While I was building the stand for the Craftsman Pro box I decided to add a couple of new workbenches, one 8' with wood top and one 12' with steel top. Here's the frame work on them.

I purchased the wood top on a trip to PDX visiting family, and had a local supplier form the steel top. Here's what I ended up with. Now I need to concentrate on the walls and floor.

We just moved a few weeks ago, so I'm still getting settled in my new attached 2-car garage. It's not much, but I think it turned out pretty well. So, here's my $30, 3-hour workbench. It's 6' x 2' and solid as hell. I designed it to use only 1 sheet of plywood and (5) 8' 2x4's.

I climbed up and stood on it after I was done and it didn't so much as creak. I used pocket holes for everything b/c I got a Kreg jig with all my birthday Lowe's gift certs. You can't see a single fastener in the whole assembly.

Well thank you very much! Its going to get a repaint and a clean up very soon. I like this work bench because of the 2 heavy duty sliding trays on the right side. Im going to make tool holders for them.

I have just done a bit of and upgrade to my two oldest benches.

Built this one over 20 years ago. (90" long 33" deep 45" high)
3"x 1 1/2"x 5/32" rhs legs and frame.
Top is 3/4" marine plywood with a sheet of 1/8" zinc annealled over the top.

Just fitted the 9 draws I have made for it.

DSC08240.jpg

This ones about 17 years old.(75"x 33"x 39")
The top is a door off a Chubb safe (1/4" plate). Picked it up at a scrap yard when I was looking for something else.Welded on some 2" rhs legs and a lower shelf. Has served me well.

Before

DSC08244.jpg

After
7 draws for this one and an extra shelf.

DSC08359.jpg

Still a bit to do yet, but their in and they work. Might even paint it this time.
