jzwhite, do you mind posting an underside picture of how the conduit is supported? I may steal your idea for a free standing wood working bench I have.

I saw these snap on tool boxes at the Indy 500
the next year and had to have them
3 lengths of conduit pull out from under the bench top. Large sheets of plywood, drywall, etc. can overlap. Set the circular saw so it does not cut into the conduit. the 2x4's support the work piec so it stays at the same level and does not fall after cut. Like having a saw horses off the side. Put casters on everything, that way you can move around the shop or outside so the saw dust etc. doesn't make a mess inside.

I'm liking the salvaged workbench!

We just moved a few weeks ago, so I'm still getting settled in my new attached 2-car garage. It's not much, but I think it turned out pretty well. So, here's my $30, 3-hour workbench. It's 6' x 2' and solid as hell. I designed it to use only 1 sheet of plywood and (5) 8' 2x4's.
I climbed up and stood on it after I was done and it didn't so much as creak. I used pocket holes for everything b/c I got a Kreg jig with all my birthday Lowe's gift certs. You can't see a single fastener in the whole assembly.

Well thank you very much! Its going to get a repaint and a clean up very soon. I like this work bench because of the 2 heavy duty sliding trays on the right side. Im going to make tool holders for them.
