Platonic - Isn't this about the same fixture/bulb scenario I'm suggesting?

Hello, I have been looking through these threads for awhile now. I am looking for advice on LED lights for my shop that is fixing to be built. It is a red iron building 24 x 24 x 12 with a 2:12 pitch, 1- 16 x 10 garage door and it will be finished with a light grey metal skin on the bottom 8ft of the interior with the standard white backed insulation showing up to ceiling. I assume looking through the Best Light Fixture Ever thread that those fixtures are only good for up to 10ft ceilings. I saw the following light fixture recommended in a previous post and would like to know anyone's thoughts on it. http://www.ledlightingwholesaleinc.com/EHB2-13-p/ehb2-110.htm
How many of these lights would you recommend for a shop my size? This shop is going to be used as a hobby shop that will eventually have a Mill and Lathe for metal working and so I would like to have good lighting. Also I would like to here if there are any other light fixtures that would be a good option.
Thank you

Plantonic, Can you confirm that the below products are what I should be buying for my project based on recommendations you have made others? If so what kelvin bulbs are those? Thanks for your time.

Maxlite LSS2XT8USE4803 75303 2 Lamp T8 LED Tube Ready 4 ft Linear Utility Strip Light Fixture Pre-Wired [Min Qty: 10]
$15.96 ea. x 10 = $159.60 (Free shipping over $95)

Plantonic Solid, Thanks for all the information you have shared on this thread. I have done quite a bit of reading but I wanted to see what you thought about my project. I have a very simple small two car garage. It measures 21'x19'. There is a water heater closet in the front left of the garage that measures 28"x67". The overall ceiling height is 8'. I want to install hardwired LED lighting fixtures. Can you recommend placement and qty of lights? There are no windows or exterior doors other than the garage door.

In another of your post you recommend the following. Is this what you would recommend for this project? Thank so much for your help.

--22W LumeGen 4ft single end bypass tube

--Maxlite LSS2XT8USE4803 75303 2 Lamp T8 LED Tube Ready 4 ft Linear Utility Strip Light Fixture Pre-Wired

Ninefall - Lenses would be an aesthetic choice rather than a safety issue since we're no longer concerned with the potential glass breakage and mercury contamination of fluorescent bulbs.

Re: ihscomputers 40x60x14 Finished

Yes, similar fixture/bulb, much higher quantity. The ihscomputers 40x60x14 layout (link) has 46 2lamp fixtures (thus 92 bulbs).

Platonic - I'm in the situation where I don't have the funds to reach 100fc. My intention is to get 24-30 of 4' doubles in order to keep my lighting budget somewhat intact.

I didn't want to spend over $500, but alas will likely spill into the ~$700 area. Would you tend to direct me towards my current plan of (24-30) 4' double fixtures or (6-8) of the alphalites that you seem to prefer for higher ceilings?

Thank you again for your continued assistance.

24 x 24 x 12 with a 2:12 pitch

LivenLife - Yes, you selected the right fixture in the Visual tool.

I ran 2 options for you here:

Qty.6 of the 110W Alphalite - Dialux PDF Report LivenLife Alphalite (link)
or
Qty.20 of LumeGen fixtures (40 lamps) - Dialux PDF Report LivenLife LumeGen (link)

New guy on the block. Building a new house and down to the electrical plan. I'm specifically looking at the garage and storage room to the left. House is a 3 story and garage on the ground level. The rear bay will have my workbench towards the front and cabinets across the back wall. The storage room to the left, right now it's just for storage and perhaps in time I'll put my workshop towards the front of the house. No real planned use currently as that area is not heated and cooled. I'm currently planning to put my work bench at the front of the rear bay and between the two doors leading to the hallway.

I absolutely want LED fixtures and I'm thinking in general terms 48" fixtures.
When the day is done, I just want adequate lighting. There's a definite budget so I don't need to go overboard. Just good solid fixtures that are time proven and work. Just not sure how to properly lay them out. If y'all would be so kind, I need a layout recommendation and fixture recommendations. And, suppliers ?

Below are the drawings of the area and some 3D CAD of the areas as well.

Thanks

ThomasPI - No promisses from me, but will note that you're missing ceiling height. Do you have the actual cad files?

FYI - You originally posted in the correct forum - This is just a layout sticky. Suggest putting you previous thread back with above info.

Thanks PS, will do and the ceilings are 10'. The CAD file I have that created those images is from Chief Architect. I'll revert back to my previous posting and add the information.

Reestablished my original posting.

$338 total:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:. 4 runs with 10 tubes on each run. Plus still have 10 extra 4' LED tubes. (will turn them into wall / detailing lights). They come in pkg of 25 for $169. T8 led integrated LED tube. Each tube is 20 or 22 watts I have short term memory, lol. There 6k light, doesn't bother me for the price :)

Platonic Solid,
As many others have stated, thank you for providing this thread to help so many people. I have read through almost all of this thread and didn't find my exact situation, although many are close.

I just recently bought Qty=12 of the LED light fixtures linked below, but after reading this thread I am now second guessing myself. I have a 40x60x16, with a white steel ceiling (flat). Walls are not finished yet, but will also be finished in white steel eventually. One 16 wide x 14 tall garage door on the 40ft wall and one 9x7 in the middle of the 60ft wall. My shop will primarily be used for automotive type of work, detailing, and maybe restoration in the future so having good light is important to me, especially for working under a lift when I get one in the future. I'm the type of person that wants to do it right the first time and not regret cheaping out. Worst case, I know I can always install dimmers and tone it down if needed.

Anyway, long story short, I would be interested to have your expert opinion on the lighting layout and quantity of fixtures. Also, if you feel there are better options for led lights other than the ones I have chosen, I'm open to suggestions. I prefer the integrated led fixtures because with 16ft celilings, I do not want to have to change bulbs.

Thanks in advance for your time and I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

oldno3fan -Your link doesn't take me to any pictures, but I'm glad you're happy.

Edit: Below link does the same thing = takes me to the snapfish home page.
Note: better to edit existing posts than testing via multiple new posts.

I recently installed 9 of the Maxlite fixtures and 18 of the Lumegen LED tubes (4000K, 22W, 2640 Lumen) in my 24X13x10' shop in a modified layout based on the program recommendations and clear directions via Platonic Solid. I modified layout slightly to accommodate overhead track shadows and move the fixture over the open overhead door to shine through the glass panel.

WOW - cool, comfortable daylight and zero shadows. I had my wife come in and turn them on - she jumped at the brightness (I did not warn her). Overall a very affordable and gratifying process. Thanks to Platonic Solid for keeping up two threads with the latest info!

Hi Plantonic,

Based on your best light recommendation could you recommend a layout for my garage? My garage is 32'x60' with 12' flat ceiling.

I will be using your lighting recommendations: Maxlite LSS2XT8USE4803, 36W, 5328 Lumens, 148 Lumens/Watt

Thanks in advance for all the help!

First time poster. I'm having a 32'x36' detached shop built with all scissor trusses on a 5/12 rood pitch (probably 3/12 inside), 10 foot walls, peak at 17' and a 100 amp service from my house. Trusses will span the 32' side and run the 36' side. I'd like to surface mount 4 foot LED lights on the bottom side of the trusses. Wondering if anyone can suggest a fixture layout with proper spacing for this type of ceiling truss construction. Or if anyone has had any experience with mounting 4 foot led lights in buildings with a scissor truss construction. I'd rather not hang any of the lights on chains from the ceiling as I'd like to retain the open environment and ceiling height for a lift. Thanks for any information you can might be able to lend.

To much demand and not enough time. Layout requests without pictures and drawings are more likely to get overlooked. Having a CAD file and in their own thread is best. If you're looking for a layout you have other options than waiting for if-when-maybe I'll get around to helping with yours.

1. Try the the Visual Photometric Tool. See instructions here (link)

2. If you're buying lamps or lamps and housings from ProLighting (see page 1 of Best Light Fixture thread), they offer a Free layout service.

3. I've done a lot of layouts. Odds are I've done something similar to whatever size space you have. Might take some digging through this thread and others.

4. If you're up for a real challenge and really motivated you can download the same software I use here: Dialux Evo (link) It's free!

, I have my Lights installed and working..thanks to you Platonic Solid.
Only a small Glitch when I fired up the lights. I had 1, 4-6 inch section on 1 bulb not light up on start up but by the time I had gotten my camera out to take a PIC it had fixed itself. It has always come on each time after....I will be installing 2-OLD T12's that I have had as spares on the last bay of my garage. Just because I have them.
Side Note*
Good thing I had ordered a few extra bulbs seeing they are no longer listed..here is to hoping they return...but I do not think they will..

Great, to have the space..now to clean all the junk and organize so I actually have the room to do my projects. The Lighting was one of my biggest thing on my to do list for the garage.
I still have to wire up 1 more T12 and move the other down a few feet in that last bay.

Good point PS, I probably should have provided a little more detail in my original post. Sorry about that. Thanks in advance for your expertise and time here. Is invaluable to those of us whom are "lighting challenged". :) Yes, I'm looking at your recommended ProLighting fixture and bulbs, to be surface mounted on the bottom of the trusses. I don't have any specific plans right now for major equipment locations that would require a focused lighting area. Just looking to provide general light to entire building. (4) 3'x4' Windows, one high up on each Gable end and two on the long side with the man door (see drawing for reference). Doors- (1) 12'x8' and (1) 6'x8'. Hope that is a bit more descriptive. Plz let me know if you need more detail. And thanks again!

PS. Took several of your suggestions and gathered more data. Attached are a few exported pics, a drawing of my building and a fixture layout using DIALux evo, awesome tool by the way. I couldn't find a Luminaire File for the GLL Bulbs from ProLighting, so I tried to find something comparable using the catalog Dx offers. The layout was created using their "automatic arrangement" feature. Don't laugh at my building, its not as detailed and aesthetic as yours. :) The other file is a layout provided by a sales Manager at ProLighting utilizing the MaxLite LED tube ready fixture along w/ GLL's high lumen 18w LED tubes with an average candle reading of 65. Curious to know your thought and opinion of these layouts and if they vastly differ from what you would suggest. Thanks again for your time and thoughts.

devildog1205 - Well done! Great to see someone take the initiative. You can use IES files that you save to your PC in Dialux. Thus, you can download the file I used in the Visual Photometric Tool link or any other IES file for that matter. As far as detail is concerned, for GJ stuff I don't even put in windows. Detail takes time, which I don't have much of. I see Gary from Prolighting did your layout. After I spoke to him they added the Maxlite housing to their offering. Both layouts look good - actually, they both look the same. I'll have to model your space to see if I would make any changes.

PRO Lighting is working on a special 12% off housing and lamps package deal for GJ!!! Stay tuned. It's not a Maxlite housing, but they're sending me a sample so I can confirm it's worthy.

Thanks PS for reaching out to Gary. I'll wait to hear back from on the package ProLighting is letting you test out. Interested to see how it performs as compared to the GLL's. And I'm always partial to anything 12% off.
