I thought about making mounts also but was not sure I wanted to spend the time needed to get the finished product I would want. If you are a good carpenter with a router, you should be able to do it.

Just wanted to stop by and thank Platonic for the heads up on the visual interior tool. I used it to plan my lighting and it's turned out just perfect. Without this I would have guesstimated about 2/3rds of the lighting it recommended and not been happy.

Once again many thanks :)

Let there be light:

Lowest profile would be LED flat panel, either 1x4 or 2x4 or 2x2. With surface mount frames, maybe 2.5 inches. There may now be some direct mount with integrated side driver that are only about 1.0 inches thick. Typical LED strip lights might be 3.5 inches tall. Some detailers will use side lights, but those could be obnoxious when not needed. I would simply use more than the minimum number of lights. PS has some great standard layouts using 4 and 8 foot lights that will give you the idea if you want to search his layout thread.

shaggyant - How big is the hole that you're trying to cover in your sheetrock? Diva Light and Greentek are both made by James Industries. Exceeding 16400 Lumens at 16ft mounting height is not ideal unless you put them on dimmers. You'll far exceed the recommended 93fc @ workplane (depending on qty and layout - naturally).

Sorry it took so long Platonic. I have attached a photo of the dungeon I am working in. Upon closer inspection I found that removal of the existing lights won’t leave to horrible of a mess from the original mounting hardware. I just want the most light per dollar I can get since it is horribly under lit currently. There are three rows of t12HO two bulb fixtures that are spaced eight feet apart currently. I count 25 existing fixtures that need replacing.

Thankfully I found this thread, this is a 40x40x14. Two 12x12 doors, bathroom is in far left back corner, two post lift in the right bay. Peak runs left to right at 23ft tall. I plan on using a 7ft big *** fan in the center of the shop. Thanks for any help!1c49edce94178539ca658387cefe5970.jpg

Any suggested layouts on my design (below)? 40x60 pole barn with 2 14x60 enclosed lean-tos on either side. Lean-tos 14' and center structure is 16' ceiling. This thread is amazing! Was feeling totally lost.

FINALLY had time to install my led lights!

I used the software Platonic listed in this thread waaay back.

I spaced the lights exactly as the software suggested.

It looks great to me and there seems to be very even light throughout the shop.

Ceiling fans next then I will finally be done moving **** around to work on the ceiling.

Shop is a complete disaster right now.

Thanks Platonic for all the help you've given in this thread.

grabera7 at first I thought the kits were too expensive, but after checking I decided that with the wood, finishing, and time involved I bit the bullet and bought the flush mounted kits.

metaj - I am skeptical of it actually achieving the 109,000 hr L70 life rating with LEDs exposed to the environment. In clean laboratory test conditions - sure, but in real life the LED phosphor will get contaminated with no lens to protect them. Other than that, I see no instant red flags.

Those highbay lights will be very bright in metaj's 8' ceiling garage. Maybe it is what you need for car detailing?

8 feet!!! OMG NO! Must have a diffuser at that height. Plus 20,000 Lm is seriously wrong at 8ft mounting height. I assumed a 15'-20' install height.

Terrible lighting for detailing. You will see each individual LED point light source reflecting back at you. Real eye damage is possible here.

My garage is actually 25x24 with an 8 foot ceiling. I do detail cars, but I'd like a little extra light. I only want ceiling lights, no wall lights. I know I want LED for sure, and I'd like a a slimmer light. My ceiling is 8 foot and I don't want bulky lights because I'll lose head room.
Best value is the 4ft strip lights in post 1 of the best light fixture sticky. They are only 3" tall with bulbs. Install continuous rows end to end to increase fc at workplane and reduce shadows.

Thanks for the fixture, bulb, and layout suggestions PS! I got all of them up last week in a slightly modified layout (to account for furnace placement) and it is amazing!

Read a lot of the posts from the beginning and think I know what I need for lighting but wanted to post up my plan.

I have 40x60 metal bldg with white insulation walls and ceiling.18ft walls 3 12x14 doors on the 60ft side.

Shop will be used mostly for storage of boats cars and motorcycles, one bay will have 4post lift and will see more mechanic work but nothing more than hobby stuff on occasion.

Plan was to just put 4 of

.greenledzone.com/2-pack-29-250-lumens-4ft-led-linear-high-bay-225w-0-10v-dimming-5000k-ip54-ul-and-dlc-premium-replaces-8-lamp-f54t5/

Centered down the bays so a total of 12 fixtures.

After reading on her I am not sure of my plan. Am I on the right track? Or need more of less fixtures.

Thanks
Jared

It amazing how the lighting technology has progressed since the beginning of this thread! And prices have even dropped to be more affordable to light as we really need to! I have really enjoyed seeing all of the great conversations throughout the thread!!:shocking:

i have a pretty good idea (i think) of what i need to do i was just going to run it by the man himself first.

im working with a attached home garage and below are some pictures of what im thinking along with some basic dimensions for light placement that im thinking.

Garage is 18'8" wide and 29'0" long with 8'8" ceilings.

i have a work bench on the right side facing the garage entrance and this large shelf on the left side. both protrude 2' from the wall and the shelf actually goes to the ceiling pretty much. so that entire wall is almost not usable for light reflection.

i would like to use this for detailing cars and also some mechanic work maybe even engine rebuilding here in the near future. im pretty much a jack of all trades master of none so i do a little of everything i can.

im not sure i need the 2 green and 2 red ones in the middle but i thought at least the two green ones would help with engine bay work.

AZYx8uz.jpg

both strips running almost the length of the garage are two bulb 4 footers.. im not sure which ballast and bulbs to go with still despite going through both light stickies and i think im going to do the floor in something at some point along with painting the walls when i figure out what color/shade of white to paint them.

teDdS6q.jpg

so the questions.
1. is the layout for lights ok
2. what recommendation for fixture and bulb can you give
3. flat white is what i need to use? (will do some more digging myself since i feel so needy already)

I have started reading this thread and I have a relatively small garage and was wondering if the lithonia sb232 was still recommended for a garage with 8’ ceilings? I’m thinking of mounting 8 total, 4 above each bay. Garage size is 19’x21’x8’. Standard two car garage.

1. Your layout looks fine. I can't be 100% without modeling it (which I don't have time for at the moment). No need for the 2 center (red) fixtures.

2. Any of the bulbs on post 1 of the best light fixture sticky installed in a 2-lamp 4ft strip light housing.

3. Flat white ceiling, eggshell white walls for optimum reflectance.

The Lithonia sb232 is a fluorescent fixture. Standard 2-lamp 4ft LED strip light works well. Like this:

I really liked the maxlite fixture but was worried about it not having a cover since to ceiling was lower. I had planned to just bypass the ballast in the sb232. However if you think not having a guard around the bulbs would be fine I’d be more than happy to pay less for the maxlite housings [emoji16]. Those GLL bulbs were the ones I was planning to order.

I’ve tried to keep your original post and plans layout section in mind.

Scorch95 - If we were talking glass bulbs I'd opt for a wrap at your ceiling height, but the suggested LED retrofit bulbs have plastic lenses - so no safety issues.

Thanks! I missed that detail. Earlier in the thread someone was looking to install 8 lights in a double 4 domino layout bc of a center column and this would work in my garage bc of the opener and track. Do you think it would provide adequate light?

Looking for lighting layout help on my shop @Platonic Solid. Thank you in advance for the help!

Shed is 28 x 48 with a 15.5 ft ceiling with a mezz per the attached PDF dimensions. Floor to bottom of Mezz is about 7.5 ft.

Will be mostly used for mild fabrication, tig welding, detailing, and some auto restoration/ customizing. Would like to have in the 80 - 100fc range for lighting. (Existing lighting will be on a motion detector so only used for quick in and out's of the shop.

Would like to run either of the 2 lights copied below for most of the space and looking for recommendations for under mezz lighting for workbench/ fabrication area.

Please advise on what layout/ recommendations would be ideal.

Hello,

I've been reading through all of the posts about lighting and it is quite overwhelming! I would like some constructive criticism on my proposed lighting layout.

Specs on shop:
50' wide by 40' deep by 16 feet high
One 10 by 10 door and two 12 wide by 14 high doors
Wall built inside to make one ~32 x 40 bay and one ~18 x 40 bay

I think I have the layout correct in the big bay, but not sure about the smaller bay. Is 43.5" too close to the walls?

Big Bay
West to east the lights will be 4' from the west wall, 11' 7.5" apart, and 4' from the interior wall
North to south 4.5' from the north wall , 10' apart, and 4.5 ' from the south wall

Small Bay
West to east 43.5" from the interior wall, 10' apart, and 43.5" from the east wall
North to south 4.5' from the north wall, 10' apart, and 4.5' from the south wall

The attachment below shows layout

I plan to use the James High Bay 2 ft. 110w lights as suggested on the Garage Journal
The ceiling will be white tin and the walls will be drywall painted white.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Steve

I’m ready to install lights in my garage and would like a little help. My garage is split into a smaller room and larger area for car work. The smaller room is 28’x12’ with 8 foot ceilings and will have white metal installed on the walls and ceilings. I will be doing appliance repairs in this part of the garage. I’m thinking of some 4 ft 2 bulb LED fixtures but not sure of how many I should get.
The main part of my garage is 36’ x 32’ with 13’ ceilings and will have white metal on walls and ceiling. I will be working on cars or other mechanical projects. I dont plan on doing painting in it. I’m thinking the 4 ft 2bulb led lights or would i be better off with high bay lights like is recommended in this thread.
Then I need a few exterior lights (wall packs?). The front of the garage is 44’ across and i would like to light up an area about 50’ x 50’ just for parking so I shouldn’t need anything super bright. I’m not too concerned with lighting the other sides of the garage. Thanks for the help!

Platonic Solid, I am going to install 29 Honeywell LED lights in my 30X40X12 pole building. The inside is finished with white steel sides and ceiling. I will be using this as a workshop for my retirement days. I have Harley's and a host of other habits/hobbies that will be good for me as I need to fill my "spare time" with piddling in the Hawg House as my wife has named it.

I don't want to break the retirement bank, so I bought the Honeywell linkable LED multi-mode 5000 lumen fixtures from SAM's club for $30 each. I attached sketch of the layout with approximate dimensions. Please take a look and comment on the arrangement. Suggestions and advice from everyone is appreciated!
