Most of the columns are black and I never noticed because I guess they don't show up well in pictures.

Here are the lift columns, as installed. I thought the black paint on the columns tended to make the lifts stand out too much, so I have the section above the base in red now, as with the arms. I didn’t want too many colors in the garage. I hope they look all right. That’s my 8-year old garage buddy, Xena.

I have a drain in the middle of my garage and the floor drains to it all around... wondering if this light slope would give me a headache trying to shim the two posts?

How much can these posts be shimmed? :-\

Oh and M. petee_c, I see you are from Canada, where did you get your Maxjax from and for how much?

Thanks, all. I hope you like the garage. It is very bare. Petee, I am not in the midst of a major repair, so it looks clean. The fact that it is very bare makes it easy to keep idy, or at least look tidy. The white floor helps.

JCSlocum, the read tool cabinets at the back wall are heavy-duty Proto, acquired one at a time over many years.

Mat, I don't have the manual with me (but you can access it on the net), but I recall MaxJax says not to exceed a certain number of shims. Maxjax comes with several shims of two thicknesses.

The floor is white epoxy. The paint was from a local manufacturer (I am in Manila), so my experience with it may not have much applcation elsewhere. But let me look for the discussion on it, and I will post the link.

Lifting newish 911s

I planned to try the lift on my 2004 Porsche 996 first, since it is a relatively new car with provision for lifting on 2-post lifts. The 120" spacing I used seems all right for the car; however, I couldn't position the pads of the MaxJax so that I could avoid fouling the plastic body panels around the rear lift points.

My Porsche has small lift points, each with a key-hole slot in the center. I think it shares this with most newish Porsches. However, on my car (a GT3), the plastic rocker covers wrap underneath and make it difficult to place the MaxJax's large square pads without trapping the plastic bits. If the MaxJax's pads were circular, they would be perfect.

Incidentally, I have one jack pad, shown below, left over from my old 993. This is specifically for Porsche and has a key that fits into the slot mentioned above. If I got 3 more, that might be the solution. However, I would have to place the Porsche items directly on the MaxJax's metal arms. I wonder if that would be safe.

Unable to lift the Porsche, I tried the MaxJax with an older car. The 120” spacing worked well, too, and the car went up easily, as shown above. The MaxJax should be great for servicing this car, as a rear wheel and an inner fender panel have to be removed to access the oil filter. What a treat.

Shouldnt you move the dino a little bit forward ? In order to balance the weigth ? The theory says that the arms of the lift where most of the weigth is should be a little shorter than the others... In this case the rear arms. I read that somewhere.
I find this Dino a real dream. My favorite body style. A 206 or a 246 ? Like it more than the GTS.

Dino on MaxJax

I worried about that, too, Jose. The good thing is that there is an active 206/246 forum, some of whose members have had experience with 2-post lifts. One sent the photo below of his frame in the course of restoration, showing the lift points. The rear lift points are farther forward than I would wish, so I share your concern. However, the collective experience seems to say the points are safe.

I prefer the GT to the GTS, too, Jose. This is a 1972 246, purchased some time ago when they were not too expensive.

Brentocool, an electric cable goes to the portable pump, and two hydraulic hoses connect the pump to the posts.

yeah, i need more room, i guess i am a country open-space kind of guy trapped in a small plot suburb and it is frustrating. that photo is from 3 years ago, it is much more crowded now.

But, if you want go clean up to recover some space you have to throw things away. That's very difficult.

yeah, that photo was taken two years ago, mine is actually a lot worse now. An old machinist lived across the street and died years ago, the wife sold the house with all his **** still in the basement. I bought most of it from the new owner, including a nice Clausing lathe from 1951. That is in pieces now in my basement, but all the rest of his tooling and other stuff is in my garage now. i only have a path now to walk in, but i couldn't stand to see all that stuff go to the scrap yard.

To round up my report on my install, I decided to keep the pump unit portable as it would be too difficult to route permanently installed hydraulic lines. I was bothered by the hand-cart appearance, however, and so chopped off the long handles and installed a spare chrome bar from one of the tool cabinets. It looks a bit neater, I think.

Yea, I'm really wanting one these lifts, and it would be good if there was another group buy or special price for the Garage Journal members. I have finally gotten money enough to try and buy one of these, let's hope they help us out.
